    The reason technical pens should be held vertically when drawing is because for technical drawings you use stencils and rulers so the pen is always used perpendicular to the paper.
    So for "art" they rent really suited because of the way you have to hold it. And fountain pens aren't suited at all for technical drawings, so there is that

    • @hukes
      @hukes 5 років тому +4

      And because you optimize flow when you hold them vertically.

      I always hear people say this but I’ve never experienced this. I can hold my rotring isographs at much more of an angle than any fineliner pen that has a little wear. Sure, at first you can draw with a micron at extreme angles but once the tip begins to wear down, you basically have to hold it straight up. Technical pens are consistently able to be held at a slight, reasonably comfortable angle.

    Having an engineering background, I do prefer technical pens. I am using the Staedtler Pigment Liners Technical Drawing Pens. They are very durable and last me a long time. No more ink mess, reliable and predictable results and a joy to use. Felt tips can last a long time, if you don't abuse them too much, even on rough or heavily textured paper. Lightly touching the paper is all you need. Mine are mainly used on textured watercolor paper and so far have no signs of heavy use.

    fountain pens are fancy and are available from £1 to £2.2million and are very good for writing,
    technical pens are better for outlining drawings and are normally £2 to £30

    I am a newbie fountain pen collector and i have 11 fountain pens, i have only used a technical pen once, and it was a really long time ago when i was still a small kid, i was curious what was in my dad's pen/pencil case, and i saw a technical pen, i got a sheet of paper and drew a tree..

    This was a nice comparison video. I have heard others talk about technical pens; but, haven't really understood what exactly a technical pen was and how it was different from other stick pens. This was helpful.
    I have three fountain pens, some ink cartridges and three bottles of ink. The ink cartridges are for the Platinum Preppy. But, I'm saving the cartridges so that I can refill them. I have the DeAtramentis Archive ink in my Metropolitan. It has a medium nib, so the line is a bit broader than the what the other two pens make. None of my pens have flexible nibs. I have tried all of them to see if the nibs would flex even a little. The Preppy won't flex at all. The Metropolitan will flex a little; but, the nib already leaves a wide enough line. The TWSBI Eco has the Noodlers American Eel ink in it. Where I live, the Noodlers ink takes a bit longer to dry; but, not too long. Since I carry the pens with me everywhere, and they are all loaded with black ink, I figure I can just switch pens if I want a narrower or wider line.
    I don't have any technical pens. If I wanted one, I think I would have to order online.

    Good video. It mirrors my experience of 60 years of drawing. I currently use the Faber-Castel Pitt pens for my go to sketching and watercolor. I use the fine for everything. The medium is not as dependable. I also have multiple fountain pens, Mont Blanc to Lami. They are great but more of a commitment than I am willing to make as a casual artist. I am an architect and did used the Rotering pens for years. I spent way too many hours taking them apart to unclog them. Beautiful if you have the patience. However, I will never go back. Greetings from Sonoma County, California, USA.

      Yasmine S I do have collection of fountain pens that I do use regularly. I do like to use waterproof ink when I sketch because I often use watercolors. Noodlers makes some wonderful waterproof inks for fountain pens. The disposable Pitt felt tip pens have very rapid drying waterproof ink and are very convenient. I usually have one in my front trouser pocket. I would not carry a fountain pen like that. I like both types of pens. I am looking at an old set of Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph pens that are on my desk in the cylindrical case. Not sure if I need to keep them. I will get out a fountain pen and use it this afternoon. Cheers.

    Just a clarification, technical pens are a type of fountain pen, isographs/stylographs/rapidographs are a type of fountain pen with constant line-weight that they achieve by the use of an internal and an external cylinder, but they still carry the ink inside and in the case of reusable metal tip pens, the functioning itself is exactly the same as with regular fountain pens, a combination of gravitational pull and capilary action.
    A more propper tittle for the video would be nib pens vs isographs.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +8

      +Renatto Belerofonte I guess you are not wrong to say their nibs or tips are different. The ink flow system is the same. Not many people even know of the word Isograph though.

    I use a whole range of different pens for the type of drawing I do (product design) I usually start out with a light copic marker, then use a very thin black gel pen like a Hi-tec-C, then progressively thicker line weights sometimes my Lamy fountain pen or Rotring technical pens. Then once I add in all my values with copic markers I use a Pentel pocket brush pen for profile lines.

    I'm a landscape architect and I use rotring isograph and staedtler marsmatic 700 technical pens about half of the time. The other half is with fountain pens, 2 brass kaweco sport in EF and Fine, a kaweco original, muji aluminum, and 2 lamy safari in EF and Fine. For pencils I use rotring 800 in office and and Pentel Kerry/Alvin draftmatic on the go.
    I like them the same. Fountain pens cannot give that super accurate always the same width line that an isograph can give. But the technical pens can't give the character that rough sketching looks so great with. Your style of drawing is perfect for a fountain pen as it's not super accurate, it's more free and messy. That's not a bad thing as it has character and it's just a different look. I actually prefer fountain pens for lettering though and I like a 1 mm pilot G2 gel pen even better

I already cleaned every single one of them but they don't work anymore. It is like their nibs are still clogged up. The same thing happened also to one of my old Lamy fountain pens. My favorite drawing fountain pen is the Tachikawa School G. It can give very fine lines plus subtle line variation similar to a manga nib. Don't expect to get Copperplate levels of flex (I never flex nibs that much when drawing anyway. I use an ink-filled waterbrush, my favorite type of brush pen, to fill in any areas of black. It saves nibs from unnecessary wear). I refill the School G pen with Noodler's Eel Black, since I find it to be very black, very waterproof, and very cheap for a fountain pen ink. The pen is eyedropper convertible if the proprietary cartridge breaks. I still use dip pens at home. I find Speedball India Ink (in 32 fl oz bottles...I'm cheap) perfect for dip pens and brush pens. The ink is very black, very fadeproof, and very waterproof. It's not marker-proof, but I'm too cheap for Copic markers anyway, and the other brands just aren't as good. I keep some random fineliners by Sharpie that I literally picked up on the sidewalk for when I ever need... technical pen/fineliner stuff (technical pens are metal-tipped. Fineliners have plastic tips). I pry fineliners open and refill them with India Ink... Technical pens would be too much maintenance for me, since I rarely use technical-style pens.

    ~SKETCHCAT

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  7 років тому +3

      +Sketchcat Watercolor paints use pigments. Those are particular that will clog the pen when dry. If you look at how watercolour dries, especially in their concentrated form, such as dried tubes or pans, they become hard and that will clog the pen. In general, if something dries and leave dust particles, those should not be put in pens.

    I mean, this all looks so intriguing and I would love to use nibs for drawing. But then again I already got a real hard time finding a regular cartridge pen that suits my lefty Hand and I usually don't even use my calligraphy one for writing my native German or even English, only when I got the time to sit down and work on my Chinese vocabulary. I already am more on the slower side writing those, so it doesn't make that much of a difference if I habe to be a bit extra careful to make sure the nib doesn't scratch on the paper. I got the stupid feeling those nibs are not made for lefties like me at all, so I guess I'll have tostick with my Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Fineliners and Copic Multiliners for now 🙄

    I find the fountain pens to be more inspirational. I like how some come in metal so they feel more substantial. and the ink flows more freely. I've always used technical pens but fountain pens are winking at me now.

    can you use the same waterproof drawing ink for fountain pens as for technical pens? I am used to think that waterproof drawing ink is not suitable for fountain pens, and that is what prevents me from using them. I was looking for the rotring art pen which has a fountain pen form, is it suitable for the same ink as for the technical pens, or is the tip more easy to clog?

    So, "technical pen". What exactly are they? Are Sakura Pigma Microns technical pens, or is it just some language-barrier thing?

    Although the fountain pen with very flexible gold nib (as close to calligraphy writing) is the king of writing instruments, I also love technical pens for the line precision.
    Which technical pen brand and model aside from Staedler's non-ISO technical pens (can be used for drawing even if it's slanted) is great for drawing even if you angle the pen?

    Is the technical pen as same as the regular gel pen? Gel pen is waterproof as well.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  6 років тому +1

      Not all gel pens are waterproof. Technical pens usually use liquid pigmented inks. Gel pens can create blobs accidentally, start and end of strokes may be thicker.

    • @teohyc

      +David Farmer It's not necessary to press down the nib hard. As long as it has contact, ink will flow. Sometimes you press hard to get thicker strokes
