The fact that Zendaya and Zac Efron did their own stunts is wild
She's actually not singing the Never Enough number. She's just lip singing. But she does a ridiculously good job at convincing you she is.
Actually I think she did sing, but even she agreed Loren sang it better.
The real singer actually performed the song on 'Britain's Got Talent' a few years ago.
She literally says it in the video
@@Mia_M shes didn't sing in the film that's the point
@@MJ-hz6gh I didn’t say she did sing in the film. I said she did sing as in like the audition, but they preferred Loren over her for vocals and she agreed.
Fun fact: The bartender featured in the Other Side number IS the choreographer. That's why it looks so good.
that is a fun fact!!!
Barnums real first performer was Joice Heth who he said was George Washington's nurse, and was 161 years old. After she passed, he sold tickets to her autopsy.
Wtf
The fact that Heth was an enslaved Black woman should not go unsaid; plus her being Washington's nurse was a hoax.
Can't say I'm surprised, given the actual history. He seemed like a pretty awful human.
Disregarding how poorly Jenny Lind was portrayed in this movie, the plot for the character didn’t even make sense. I’ve only seen this movie once but, I think they mentioned she’s a philanthropist with an interest in helping women. Yet they wrote her to fall in love with a married man and try to have an affair with him?? It doesn’t make sense.
You don't choose who you're attracted to.
@@maxlee8780 yes but that’s a married man that they chose for her character to fall in love with
And also you can choose to get rid of the feelings out of respect for the spouse
@@gabt.389 yea not alot of people do that 😂
@@gabt.389 I mean, you can’t really just get rid of feelings, but you can choose to not pursue the other person and try to get over them, though getting over someone can be hard
She had admirers who propositioned her, but she never reciprocated, so yeah, it's weird...It's historical fact that she more-or-less implied "You're like a brother to me" to let her most famous pursuer, Hans Christen Anderson, down gently. Some historians have fostered the legend that he channelled his heartbreak into the character of The Snow Queen, when he wrote that tale lol.
That being said, this movie isn't supposed to be taken seriously as an accurate depiction of the irl people. Much like Hamilton. Suspension of disbelief for the sake of a good Hollywood story and all that....
I like how Sophia can’t even pretend to give a shit in the thumbnail.
It was honestly the best face that captured my feelings about the movie LOOOOOOOOL
Agree with basically everything. The one thing I interpreted differently, when she's singing Never Enough the look of love on his face ... I always interpreted that as falling not for her but for the fact the him bringing her is giving him approval and recognition by that whole crowd. So I saw her as framed as falling for him while he's falling for being seen as more polished and being recognized as more than a cheat.
I agree entirely that we have like no plot depth. Even if they'd developed this well... I'd never forgive it for what they did to Jenny Lind's portrayal. She was an amazing woman who at a certain point put all her additional earnings to charities. She overcame so much. A movie about her life would have been incredible, but no they had to... This. This. Thanks.
PT Barnum disowned/disinherited his own daughters for not being "chaste" enough. 🙄😒
Oh yeah, when I was editing the video, I was like huh maybe he was thinking "this woman is gonna bring me fame and wealth", but I was already too blinded by the PT hate train 😂😂😂
@@SophiaPhannn Honestly, PT Barnum is one of the most hate worthy trains, so if you're gonna be blinded by one you chose well 😁
This movie is easier to like when you don't take it too seriously. I just enjoyed the spectacle of it with everyone else but never really got into it. The music is catchy, the costumes are colorful, the choreography slays, I just let it be fun
Same, I also didn't know it was based off real people.
@@cirah1616 nah I knew, I just turned that part of my brain off while watching it with my family. I do agree that they should've made it about a fictional character and not the real guy
I never understood why it matters that the real PT was a pos. That doesn't change anything about the movie.
😀
It just would have been better if it wasn't based off a really terrible irl person.
I just love how throughout this entire film Sophia looked so disinterested
Couldn't even be excited for this one 😭😭
Lolz
I could not stop chuckling everytime you said "vinagrette"
I was chuckling to myself too 😂
Don’t worry Sophia, Zac Efron has stated that he’s not embarrassed by the HSM movies 😂😂
Ugh yes love that, can't be embarrassed when he put on the performance of a lifetime in the "Bet On It" number 😂
@@SophiaPhannn I still have a crush on zac efron! What a hunk!
IRL, the Bearded Lady (I forget her name), wasn't delivered from poverty by Barnum. In fact, she was already hella famous by the time Barnum approached her, having performed for European royalty and highly sought after. If I remember right, he practically begged her to be in his show to give it notoriety.
The real reason Jenny Lind cut ties with him was his relentless marketing while on tour, not because of a relationship.
Y'a know what, valid. The story can get a little 'huh?' but I love the music and that they actually use the music to show events passing instead of just putting it there then ignore it.
I'm swedish and the part with Jenny Lind kinda bugs me. She came from being bastard born to recognized as a royal singer and was loved by all of european royalty.
It's also said that HC Andersen worshiped her and proposed marriage several times, but she always rejected his advances.
I completely understand, I love almost every song in it but the story hurt me to watch and I haven't watched it since. The music is always amazing tho.
If Josh Groban can make Opera accessible to the masses why couldn't Never Enough actually be an Opera number?
They could have totally had a song that was in his type of style. That would have been a cool way to modernize it.
Sophia I completely agree with you on this movie, especially the way they built up Lind with Never Enough only to have her be a manipulative temptress was so horrible and disappointing.
I, as well, couldn’t get over them making P. T. Barnum the protagonist in this film. Maybe I know too much of the history on him and his ventures, but he was an AWFUL, abusive person. I love Hugh Jackman 😍though!
Honestly for me, I enjoy anytime Hugh Jackman sings. It's often the little things like that that helps me enjoy a movie even if the plot is bad or I don't like the characters. I'm so used to seeing him as Wolverine so like with any other versatile actor/actress, it's a fun treat to see him in something so different. I also really like some of the songs. My favorites are The Greatest Show, A Million Dreams (including the reprise), Never Enough and From Now On.
OK, even if in this case, Hugh Jackman's character is kind of an asshole.
I also love Hugh Jackman 😭 he obviously loves to sing and perform, so it IS a little treat. That's why if I had to choose, I'd watch him in Les Mis over TGS ANY DAY even if I'm also kind of whatever about that movie LMFAO
@@SophiaPhannn Yeah I do kinda prefer Les Mis mostly because Anne Hathaway's I Dreamed a Dream is just one of the best performances I have ever seen! Also Jean Valjean is a more likable character to be fair.
I feel the best way to improve this story is not make PT barnum the protagonist.
Maybe have the same beginning to begin his villain origin story and than make the performers the true protagonists and give them more attention.
Than have the critic respond more to the performers and just criticize Barnum (which he did), but add a couple moments where he talks to the performers and see they themselves are the “celebration of humanity” not Barnum adding them as that.
Would make it more compelling.
I can't for the life of me figure out why they didn't have more "freaks" as main characters. I mean the whole message and point of the movie is to treat people equally despite differences! And yet those same people are relegated to barely background characters. There's only 2 or 3 that even have speaking roles! It's ridiculous.
If they had gone down the path of showing Barnum for what he truly was, we would have a far more interesting story about what the people he employed went through, and have a much less watered down retelling of true events.
@@nottoday3561 agreed.
In the drinking scence with Zac Efron they show, the bartender was giving p.t. water. He was trynna get Zac's character drunk to join
LOOOLSophia basically said "fuck PT" this whole reaction
YEAH FUCK PT LOOOL
I feel like this movie is beloved by kids and easy audiences because of the showmanship of it (haha greatest SHOWMAN), its a little bit like a circus movie, where, even though there is a plot, most people come to watch it just for the catchy songs and the breath defying stunts and tricks that it potrays (hence the really dramatic smoke in "a million dreams" and the curtain scene in "tightrope"). It's not trying to be very heavy on the plot, which many people pan it for, its really just made to whisk you into a world where anything could potentially be possible, even if it is in a world where, at times, things really were impossible. Idk that's just my take on it. I do like this movie but i only watch it when i need an escape rather than a plot heavy tearjerking musical.
Yeah I agree with that. That's why I think it's a good baby step towards liking movie musicals because it's visually appealing and you can just turn your brain off during it. But I personally can't not pay attention to the plot--or lack thereof 😭
@@SophiaPhannn completely fair
I totally get it. I honestly just loved the music and what the movie was trying to say. Also Hugh Jackman. I love him so much.
But in hindsight, it's hard to look away from the person PT was and who they were trying to make him out to be... and they didn't even do a good job of redeeming him.
Hugh Jackman* lol I hate myself
Omg I was reading comments without glasses and didn't even catch that you wrote "Huge Jackman" until now LMAO 😂
@elizabeth.mirandi when u said "huge jackman", it reminded me of when hugh, zac and zendaya were on james corden
And corden called hugh Jackman
"Huge" jackman!
@@cheneethompson5756 hahah omg yes!
@elizabeth.mirandi james Corden's so funny!
Lmao I love your alternate ending idea for this movie! I hate that they tried to make this person seem like he was a good person. The real guy was a p.o.s. And it’s gross they made it cute. But if he was just a totally fictional character, not P.T no one, just a random fake made up character, this movie would have more of a chance with me.
God, considering real life PT barnum mistreated and exploited ppl with deformities, and also kept a slave as his first “exhibit”, then sold tickets to her autopsy after death, i cant watch this movie without feeing disgusted by the movie treating him like a “visionary who wanted to make ppl happy” and “helped ppl be accepted”
Ugh
I first went into this movie with no knowledge of the plot, but knowing that P.T Barnum was an a-hole irl, and I was so shocked that they made him the main character and the "good guy"!
Jenny Lind was also involved with Hans Christian Andersen she rejected him and Hans wrote the snow queen based on that, The Snow Queen who is the antagonist of the tale is based on Lind
Omg I read about that and thought that was so funny to me LMFAO like he got that butthurt about being rejected that he went and wrote a story about her 😭
@@SophiaPhannn ice queen is still a vibe though so in the end he should have just taken his L quietly.
And Frozen is loosely based off The Snow Queen. So without Jenny rejecting Hans Christian Andersen, Frozen probably wouldn’t exist. Disney better thank Jenny Lind, I STG.
@@SophiaPhannn While most of that is true, she was not the inspiration for the Snow Queen herself but rather Gerda who is the protagonist of the story (documented by both swedish and danish scholars), so it was written out of "love"/"affection" not "hate"/"spite" 😊
When I first watched this movie, I was more into the soundtrack and the music, I agree with you on the plot that it made me step back and think it doesn’t feel right. That scene with Jenny Lind and Barnum reminds me of Hamilton with the Reynolds Pamphlet, that shock me to the core. The lesson portrayed with the circus performers was don’t let anyone tear you down and define who you are, you’re beautiful inside and out and gem, and the song This is me really spoke out to me and made me emotionally, we may be different but we’re unique. The Barnum part really surprised me, thank you for pointing that out Sophia. Also Happy birthday month💗
For the effect of the darkness around some of the scenes, it's called a vignette (vi-nyett), but I did get amused by the vinaigrette parts lmao
the story is meh (considering that the real Barnum was way worse iirc), but I love this film for the music, the costuming and the atmosphere. the whole aesthetic is so beautiful to me
and ofc the actors did their job. I mean Zendaya and the troupe ate.
also also I wouldn't say that he fell in love with Jenny per se. imo he saw that she was a great opportunity, not love interest but an object of interest (which still sounds bad but at least he didn't really cheat. right?👀)
When I whatched the first time I didn't understood at the beggining why Zendaya's character were a "freak", i though it was because of the colored hair 🥲 only after the scenes with zac effron's family that I gotted the theme. They could easilly add another kind of plot. And I hate that the only people who has "romantic" scenes are the "beautifull" people. The music is good and fun but soooo wrong how they choose to portrait everyone and it's themes😖.
My little sister was so in love with this movie and wanted me to watch it with her. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that I didn’t enjoy it when we finished it 🙃 some songs were good, but I really didn’t care for it 🤷🏻♀️
As someone who hasn't watched the movie, listening to you critique it made me think, "This sounds like something Disney would make," only to later realize that it's on Disney+.
unpopular opinion but i loved “Tightrope” it showed her loyalty and her blind love for Barnum and that she would literally follow him anywhere. it really makes the whole situation sadder how she just wanted to follow the path of a family and happiness and he wanted to take multiple. and she still forgave him. it’s so depressing tbh.
Going to see this movie in theatres and not knowing in was a musical and that it was about P.T Barnum was… an experience
Lol you know that sudden little shock sound in your videos when a movie part shocks you? And it's usually simultaneous with a quick zoom to your face? That's the sound that popped in my head when I read the thumbnail caption. 05:38 This sound!!! This is the sound that popped in my head.
LOOOOL I'm out here ruffling some feathers alright
@@SophiaPhannn hahaha girl do your thing!! That's what we're here for.
It doesn't matter that I find this movie PHENOMENAL and that it inspired me to tears.... I.... ****takes breath****.... I still love you.
Woooooooo! Never heard that before! But you gotta admit Sophia, the songs ultimately slap!❤🤍
Not me reading the title as "the greatest SNOWMAN" and being like "what kind of parody is this" lol
Your hair is giving me life😫💅
Hehe thank you 💙💙
THANK YOU!! When I first heard about it I refused to watch it due to PT Barnum and his circus' horrible issues. My mother and sister loved it though and forced me to watch it and I agree some of the music is good but I hated basically everything it stood for. So glad you made this video!!
Also! Fun fact - elephants should actually not be ridden. Not only are they not made to be ridden (unlike horses) and riding them can harm them, but the whole elephant-riding industry is rife with abuse.
I love the music and the performances, but I agree, the story is mostly ho hum and forgettable.
Watching this movie when it first came out and having no background knowledge about the characters and what it was based on, I felt like this movie could've done so much more but it was really forgettable to be honest.
i love this movie SO MUCH but i do feel like it’s one of those movies where the more ignorant you are, the more you enjoy it
Not you calling the vignette a vinaigrette 😂😂😂
I'm learning that people who are into live-performance musicals and plays tend to despise films that don't mimic elements of live performances, which can come off as pretentious, but it's the limiting aspect of traditionalism and preference. It's just sad because I think they don't take these films as they are, caught up in ascribing a set of characteristics and values of an art form (live plays and musicals) to another art form (film musicals and plays) and then they demean that other art form for not having those characteristics and values.
I've always been a musical snob in that way haha that being said, I do enjoy quite a few movie musicals! I really loved Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Wiz, Chicago, Hairspray, etc. just to make a few. I think it's just the newer ones (past 2010 maybe?) that I think are just lacking for me. But obviously it's all personal preference, I can understand why ppl would love TGS even if I do not
you look so grumpy in the thumbnail plz 😭
This movie does that to me 😭
this movie's plot is so weird. it's just characters wanting something and then immediately getting it. PT Barnum wants his girl, so he gets her. PT Barnum wants a circus, so he gets one. PT Barnum wants opera singer, now they're on tour. circus gets burned down? that's ok, we'll just will it to be built again! it doesn't really feel like there's ever tension, and it's shot like a CW drama. also the main problem with the songs is that they were written to be sold as a soundtrack, so they're super general and don't indicate any specific event or arc in the movie. you could apply them to anyone, which makes them profitable, but not good for a musical.
I was Zendaya baited
Me too 😭
SOOOOO glad I'm not alone on not loving this movie!!! I love some things like the songs. Hate other things like the CGI and predictable plot. Overall I think it's a "MEH" movie. First time I saw it, I kept thinking how it could be so much better.
I understand where you’re coming from completely. I think I personally like the movie for the music and the films aesthetic. As someone who actually loves the circus (not the history of how it came to be ofc) but the art of it all, I was so excited when they made a movie musical with the plot based off the circus, but I will say I wasn’t a huge fan of them using a historically bad person to do that. You’re right, if they were going the fictional route anyway they could’ve made this film about anyone or someone who didn’t exist l. Lol! Love your videos btw!! 💜💜✨
Also I'm almost certain zendaya did half of her trapeze stunts
23:50 this was crazy bc who was making FAN ART LMAOAOAOOOOO 😭
Always love & hate this :D and Happy Early Birthday!
I remember researching the actual people the characters were based off of after watching this movie for the first time. Was soooooo disappointed in the story after that. I have to agree that I liked a lot of the songs when the movie first came out but now I can only enjoy them in small doses
Sophie, calling the vignettes vinaigrette was so funny
I knew nothing about PT before going in and i loved it. I get that you can't put blinders on and watch but i can and i have a great time every time lol
I absolutely agree about what you said about the soundtrack being good on it's own just not with the movie. that's my relationship to the movie. hate the movie itself, but like listening to the soundtrack on it's own.
The greatest showman is one of my fave movies of all time 😭
I agree with you 100% about Barnum. and about Efron's and Zendaya's characters... I agree with you there too. Zac is attracted to/supposedly loves her? Okay, fine. I can kinda buy that. But before Rewrite the Stars there was almost or downright nothing that made me think he returns his feelings.
So ironically the reason you hate it is the reason I loved it. P.T. is a horrible man (in both irl and movie), it adds to the charm that not all movies have to have the perspective of the morally right. Yes, the took liberty to make some drastic changes, but in the long run, how many people looked into these characters irl and saw a lot of info they didn't know before?
Movies are just movies to me. If they are based off of real event/people then its our responsibility to now use this media to dive deeper into the real facts, ei, irl when a slave died, P.T. actually put her autopsy on display to get more money, he was also the one to create the fake mermaid using a real fish. Pocahantus was the same was, we learned a lot of real facts because the movie was so false in its making. I always find these more interesting because of this, It's a big motivator to learn more about smaller parts of history you didn't otherwise know even existed.
Once again, loved your reactions even if you hated the movie, its def a fresh perspective if anything else!
This is one of my very few guilty pleasure movies. I know the story isn’t well written nor historically accurate and the political message thus feel really hypocrite, but with its (we have to admit it) compelling musical numbers the movie managed to portray one aspect really well: The addictive and all destroying desire to entertain and to be seen which I could really relate to.
the tightrope song was quite unmemorable that when i saw people saying how underrated or unmemorable the song was, i decided to really listen to that song and became one of my personal fave songs. ballad + song of one of the characters that deserves the best was a plus
omg happy birthday!!✨
I'm a February baby too. I love how vibrant your hair is

sophia thank youuuu! i always felt like i was the only person that did not like this, a friend at the time loved it so much she wanted me to go to a sing a long version, whichwas, something. i was sat there with a cinema of people singing all the songs and clapping asdfg. i agree with so many of the things you said, the songs did not work for me with the exception of million dreams and rewrite the stars, the hugh jackman/zac effron song i agree i do enjoy the choreography and cinematography of it, but it isn't really memorable. overall i just really agree, i don't like the plot, i don't get attached to any characters (and i also don't like hamilton, I've only ever seen like a 30 second clip and it was enough for me to know it's not for me. agreeing with the zac zendeya characters romances, it felt like we didn't get enough interactions with the two of them, so we couldn't really get attached or root for them, and the issues such as rascism were not really like thread throughout for example as you said, just kinda of felt thrown in
I’m also so glad to know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the greatest showman and Hamilton, I thought I was the only one 😭
Ayye I'm early to a Sophia upload!
ITS VIN-YET
Also this was a good video I'm a big fan
I just saw the title and clicked so fast lol. I can write a thesis about everything wrong with this film but I don’t even know what your thoughts are gonna be, so let me actually watch the video lolll
I remember going to one circus when I was 4 (?) and I remember just a few things. 1) It was very dirty. Peanuts in the floor, it smelled like poo and everything was grimy (kind of like a fair) 2) I was quite entertained. It was the first live show of anything is ever seen. I don't remember the specific acts at all, but I remember the feeling of the performance and the crowd feeding into each other. 3) I wanted the elephant cup so badly and my parents actually got it for me. I cherished that cup for so long. Im going to check tonight if they still have it in storage.
I can imagine the circus to feel very magical when you're a little kid 😄
Complete opposite for me, I'm not a fan of musicals but love this one.
OMG IM SO GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO DIDNT UNDERSTAND ALL THE HYPE AROUND THIS MOVIE ‼️
I only watched it because of zendaya and Zac Efron, wasn't a fan of the songs sadly. I only liked million dreams and rewrite the stars
GIRL u called the vignette a vinagrette LOLOLOL ilyyy
Thank you for pointing out the Zendaya and Zac love story. I didn’t believe at all, even while they were singing rewrite the stars. They barely set it up and wanted us to care lmao
I love the Greatest Showman so much. I hate PT Barnum so much though. The problem is that he was an actual historic figure who was an asshole and used people with deformities for money. I love everyone in it expect Hugh’s character. + Happy birthday month my favorite commentary UA-camr! 🫶

I adore this movie. I'm not a purist by any means, so I don't know what the characters were supposed to be like, but I like the character relationships in this film. Zac, Zendaya and the lady with the beard had amazing performances, and the choreographies were spell binding.
Oh my God, I didnt know we have the same birthmonth. I am always happy watching you reacting and giving opinions about movies. Love u always and go gurl
@Sophia_Phan I tried searching you on tg but I cant seem to find u
Ooh addition to my previous post.
After hearing you mentioning Efron’s parents was not a bigger presence, I imagined if they were.
It is one thing starting a new job, but if his parents were starting to “disown him” after leaving his theater career, but still giving him a second chance, he risks losing them all together due to their racism.
He would be completely starting over without his parent’s influence and wealth which adds more stakes for him.
Also, him buying more land could mean that he spent his entire life’s savings at this point.
I adore this movie if only for the soundtrack. I adore the soundtrack
I liked the movie at first because I did not know the real life story of Barnum very well. My thought was, "yeah he is a dick, but he is a product of his era, and he is trying the best that he knows how." Then I did a deep dive on Barnum and was horrified to find out who he really was and what he was all about. I agree with you that the movie would have been much better with all fictional characters, and without giving Barnum the heroic makeover.
I liked this movie, but I love your real takes XD
I love this comentary i agree with your opinons!!! you're make me happy as well!!!
I just love the songs
I will never got sick of listening the Greatest Show song.I don't listen it every day but I still like it
This is the (anti this movie) negativity party I've always wanted. Feeling so SEEN
Granted I've only watched the movie once, but I didn't see Barnum as the hero, just the main character. Yes they gave him unnecessary redemption, but that's family movies for you. The whole thing just kind of comes across to me as something fun for the kids, and something to keep in mind for the adults. That thing being that your desires can lead you down a bad path if you don't pay attention.
I really feel like your dislike for P.T. colored your view of the movie.
As far as the racism obstacle, Zac Efron's character didn't lose his inheritance until he defended Zendaya's character from his parents. He was risking his money by associating with PT. It's like the difference between Russian roulette with one bullet and Russian roulette with all six shots.
And I really think their relationship developed just fine. We saw that weeks or months passed in between their initial meeting and when their hands touched.
In my defense, I didn't know who PT was when I first watched it in theaters, and I still didn't like it. It wasn't until I researched about him afterwards and had subsequent rewatches that really solidified my dislike for the movie!
@@SophiaPhannn okay fair. I forgot to say I like the movie. I thought that 90% of the songs were incredible. I really enjoyed the choreography.
And I thought the movie was trying to hint a darker explanation for what they're showing on screen. In particular the scene of PT kissing Jenny Lind. While we see her kissing him, the headline is Jenny quits. Suggesting that the kissed was not consensual on her part and that's the reason she's quitting. But of course Studios were too afraid to make that the actual story because the main character has to be Some kind of hero.
When you said he's falling in love with Jenny... he isn't, he's seeing $ signs because she CAN sing and will bring in the upper crusts money.
my enjoyment of hugh jackman’s work has been continuously tainted by the stuff he does in the musical theater industry. from the music man fiasco to jeremy jordan’s story about the pre-production of the greatest showman, etc. etc. i loved this movie when it came out but can’t stand to watch it anymore bc of him and the character of pt barnum :/
I also don’t care for this flick. I like some of the songs, some choreographies, but the movie itself just doesn’t do it for me. Also, my dad always looks up the history behind movies while watching them, so we were pretty annoyed during this.
The plot point of Zendaya being black would have been okay if it wasn't for the fact that THERE WERE RICH BLACK PEOPLE RIGHT THERE IN THE THEATER so why is Zendaya being black a problem?? I don't understand!!
I know most people can ignore the awful history behind movies like this but I can’t! I hate when movies glamorize and romanticize people like him. It leaves such a bitter taste in my mouth. I do think this movie has great actors, costumes, sets, and music. I can’t overlook the people and animals that have suffered because of that man in real life and then try to make him look like a hero.
I absolutely love tightrope
I actually only watched this movie once before finding an animatic of ladybug and catnoir from miraculous with the song rewrite the stars, and that song makes way more sense for those two characters in my opinion lol. I'm not a fan of miraculous anymore sadly but when ever I think of that song I think of them
I liked the music..... that's about it. I am disappointed they didn't hire real side show performers. I'm disappointed the albino characters weren't played by albino dancers. I'm disappointed they gave Tom Thumb's famous quote to PT Barnum even though the real Barnum was abusive as all heck to his performers. Barnum was a genuine conman for most of his career and that's ignored. I was very upset by the portrayal of Jenny Lind who worked with Barnum briefly but then stepped away because she couldn't stand the man. She was a massive philanthropist and advocate and spoke out against his abhorrent treatment of his performers numerous times. she would have NEVER attempted to get him into an affair and then risked his marriage out of spite. All I could imagine was, if there is an afterlife, how she must feel looking down at this movie and how she was shown.
Aside from that, the pacing of the story was choppy. Everything felt very strung together loosely in order to just get us from one musical number to the next without any depth or flow to it. I think they missed an opportunity to make a really interesting film about the performers and celebration of being a "freak" in the side show instead of the shame put on them and instead they focused it around hugh jackman, zendaya and zach efron who, while they performed great, are not people we don't see constantly represented already.
Idk. Again, I thought the music was great. I think the actors did great, the best with what they could do but overall, I get your distaste for this film. Understand it completely. The only thing I really loved about the film, apart from a couple songs, was introducing me to the work of Keala Settle who is a magnificently talented woman.
