    I think there's a difference between being mad that a girl doesn't like you and taking that out on her, and being mad that a girl uses you and you get mad and rant at her about it. Bianca was using Joseph Gordon Levitt's character. I don't think that's very "nice guy"esque, in the way I think you mean.

    • @SophiaPhannn
      @SophiaPhannn  3 роки тому +123

      I can see it both ways! I think the phrase that made me think it was a little "nice guy"-esque was when he said "I learned French for you". Because she was probably looking for a French tutor at the beginning and he took that chance to get close to her, and then he uses that as an excuse later on--like she didn't ask you to learn French for her lol. Other than that, yeah I understand being mad about being used, just something about that one line rubbed me the wrong way

    I agree with you on the ending critique concerning Julia Stiles character forgiving Heath Ledger rather quickly, but if we look at it as a sign of character development, it makes somewhat sense. Stiles character has softened somewhat due to not only her budding romance but through growing closer to her sister and dad. She may choose to forgive because she no longer views things as black and white anymore. She herself thought she was doing the right thing by preventing her younger sister from dating. Also I think a portion of her righteousness in the movie is a defense mechanism as she states in the peddle boat to Heath right before the paintball scene. Therefore she is being more vulnerable by forgiving and actually showing character development. She's not as afraid of getting hurt as she was in the beginning.

    • @kaylakhaos6739
      @kaylakhaos6739 7 місяців тому

      Yep it was about character development as well as adding depth to her character. She isn’t just a strong independent girl, she has layers like all human beings. There’s a reason to why she was the way she was. She was hurt before so she just put up defense mechanisms to not let people in. But once she softened, her relationships with her dad, sister, and him all changed. And I agree I think it’s why she chose to forgive him rather than just seeing things all in black and white. Black and white thinking isn’t good to begin with, it was well needed for her to grow as a character.

    Kat gave major "Not like other girls" girl vibes LOL. I mean, why the hate on prom? Ripping the posters that costed money and time to make and place. It's ok to not think like most people, but she tries too hard to show it, maybe thinking that she's superior bc of that. But again, everything is exaggerated in this movie so, not a big deal.

You can rip on her for it because it's hypocritical, or you can allow that she's lashing out at those... whatever, she's lashing out at the institutions that represent this expectation of her that is unfair to her, the stereotype (?) that she's expected to fit that is too small for her. And yeah, those who don't reject those institutions are getting hit in the crossfire (there's a better word/phrase, but I just can't think of it; I think you get my point though), and she's not right, but you forgive her because you see where she's coming from.

      The "not like other girls" mentality, though, exists when a woman puts down other women for the sake of male attention. Kat doesn't perform to appeal to men--she doesn't perform for anybody. That's the point of her character. I understand how the juxtaposition of Kat with Bianca, and even Kat with the girls in the other car at the beginning, can come off as similar to the "not like other girls" trope, but the basis of Kat's disapproval of "other girls" is their performativity. She's a baby feminist who wants permission to reject traditional femininity without realizing that some women can enjoy and choose to embrace their femininity.

    Same for my brothers in the 80's and 90's.
    You had the jocks and even they were segregated: football, basketball, etc. The artsy kids, the theatre kids, the popular (aka the rich) kids, the nerds/geeks (aka the smart kids), etc.
    I was put into the artsy and nerd categories because i am an artist and was always top of my class. And the lunch tables were absolutely segregated. Idk how school is now, but you didn't sit with others outside your clique. And if you did, people gave you dirty looks.

Or getting shoved/rammed into lockers, tripped, etc. And you were shunned if you even tried to sit at a table other than with your clique. Also, after Columbine, people treated the nerdy/quiet kids even worse because they wanted to beat us down so we wouldn't "go all Columbine" on the whole school. But of course that would only make things worse.

    2:01 Sooooo what table did YOU sit at in high school, hmmm?
    In Bianca's defense, she did want a certain level of normalcy, at least as far as high school rights of passage. But as the older sibling in my family, whose younger sister hit high school and immediately became one of the more pretty/smart/popular/approachable students, I can see why Kat and her father were more or less cohorts. The dad sees the horror of teenage delinquency cranked up to 11 every day at his job, while Kat was literally screwed by the first man she trusted with her body, only to have him try to screw her indirectly by screwing her younger sister. Granted, the father is projecting his fears onto his children (one of whom already did the one thing he told his kids NOT to do) and Kat is running interference based on a painful previous experience. Having said all that, Bianca is really unwilling to jeopardize her image in order to date. If seeing a boy is that important to her, as you pointed out, why doesn't she see him in private or simply sneak away? Well, as Chastity points out, she's got a bit of a 'princess' complex going on. She wants to have her cake and date it too...eat it, too, whatever. It doesn't excuse Kat's attempt to usurp her sister's freedom or Cameron/Patrick/Joey from concocting this scheme simply to get a Date out of Bianca, but Bianca's value system is very Bianca-centric. Also, as underhanded as these three guys are and as fractured as Kat's view of dating in general is, they all have some agency in moving the plot along. Whereas Bianca...well, she gets in a few good hits towards the end, sure, but that was AFTER learning of what happened to her sister, AFTER the plan was more less in play and AFTER Cameron filled her in on the plan and did his Hail-Mary nice-guy confession in the car. She didn't really search for any of those realizations, they were already in motion or presented TO her. Things just kind of HAPPEN to/for/around Bianca...maybe that's where the accusations of selfishness come from.
    Side note, yeah yeah Larisa Oleynik is hot and all, makes sense from an Rom-Com POV, but hotter than mid-20's Gabrielle Union? HELL no.
    No joke, I was entering High School when this film came out, but only learned about its existence a year later by way of the soundtrack. Cruel to Be Kind and I Want You to Want Me were favorites of mine for years. Regarding the lack of parental supervision everywhere else in the movie...the early 2000s were trying to kill off the late 90s, yes, but I grew up in a pretty affluent suburb and this portrayal isn't very far from the truth. Booze was way too easy to get, very few teachers batted an eye at seeing pamphlets/webpage announcements regarding upcoming parties and it was common for kids to throw together a 70-person, two-keg-rager with a days' notice. How? It was the North Shore; they had money, driver's licenses, time and absentee parents...a lethal combination. One of my most vivid memories of the 8th Grade (JUNIOR high) is of three cops tackling my buddy Bill on the dance-floor/basketball court, because he snuck a bottle of Maker's Mark into our third school dance and was passing it around by covertly pouring it into soda cans...they had to rewrite the student decorum and school policy rulebooks for that incident alone.
    Great film, great review! Haven't seen this in years and now I want to again.

      I didn't haha I ate in my teacher's room with my friends during lunch or on a nice day, we'd eat out in the hallways (I had an outdoor school)
      Ooh yeah that's very true! Bianca doesn't really do much. I honestly just really focus on Patrick and Kat more; Bianca and Cameron just hit one snag but they're basically together most of the movie. And man, if it weren't for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, I would've been more creeped out by the whole nice-guy rant. But I will say that a lot of teenage girls probably thought the same way that Bianca did. Thinking that their problems are bigger than they actually are. I mean, what teenager out there is totally unselfish? Haha
      And YES, I agree. I've always found Gabrielle Union to be soo gorgeous
      I had a clip where I questioned if teachers even cared about what students were doing outside of school, but I cut it out because I thought maybe they did. I guess I was wrong 😅 I lived in a pretty affluent area too, but nowadays parties and everything were a lot more secretive. All the drugs and drinking were all very under-the-radar. But then again, I was never part of the "cool" crowd, so I probably just didn't know about anything haha

Unless you go to great lengths to hide what you do socially from specific people who may view it on Snap or Instagram or Facebook, you give yourself away by posting your Hijinks. But in '98 and '99? Unless you were caught in the act, you had plausible deniability. Had two dates that ended with me dropping her a block from her house, then driving home and sneaking up the trellis into my room ;-).

    the biggest thing that makes me angry about the dad is that if he's a doctor shouldn't he know just teaching kids abstinence doesn't work. Instead of being all dramatic about proms and stuff he could've just made sure his kids knew how to use protection and were on the pill. Like Bianca could've had a secret boyfriend, ditched school, and gotten pregnant at any time lmao.

    I went to prom, but it was the least memorable dance to be honest. I took a friend that I never saw again in person due to living different lives. Prom is really what you make of it folks and is the most expensive dance you will go to in high school. If you're not a social person you don't need prom.
    Long comment short, it's only fun if you enjoy going.

    Foundation of relationship?
    That sounds like someone lying and not admitting they met their partner on Bumble or Tinder.
    The reason why you get together is not the reason why you stay together.
    Also, I think he would move for her. He mentioned he moved around a bit to take care for sick relatives. So he doesn't have qualms about picking up and starting new.

I’d like to think that i’d probably react the same way she did as an aquarius myself. I mean, who can resist the charms of someone like patrick lol

      @UTU49 3 роки тому +2

      It's not one of the plays that I am most familiar with (although years ago I did read it, and I saw a stage production), but I believe this movie used a lot of the story.
      I like this sub-genre of teen romcoms that are based on classical literature.
      She's the Man -- based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
      10 Things I Hate About You -- based on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew
      Clueless -- based on the novel, Emma, by Jane Austen
      Cruel Intentions -- based on Les Liaisons dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (although this one is definitely NOT a romcom)

    • @UTU49
      @UTU49 3 роки тому

      Also
      Warm Bodies -- based on Romeo and Juliet by WS
      This one is a zomromcom -- a zombie romantic comedy
      ETA -->
      (Actually, on 2nd thought, it would be a real stretch to call this an "adaptation" of R&J. WB merely borrows some characters, situations, and scenes -- more of an homage to R&J than an adaption. The overall plot is very different.)

    That actually IS a high school. It's Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington. It was built as a luxury hotel in Tacoma because Tacoma was the end of the transcontinental railroad. The old train station is now a courthouse. When the Great Depression hit the hotel went bankrupt. The State picked it up for very little money and renovated it into the school you see today. The scene in the school courtyard is actually over the huge swimming pool below ground. The scene where he was interviewing the various kids to see if they'd date Kat is shot on the stairway going down to the pool and those kids were students there in the school's drama department. The paint ball scene was filmed at Gasworks Park in Seattle. Interestingly enough, from that park one can easily see the floating house that was used for the film "Sleepless In Seattle". The park used to be the primary power generation point for all of Seattle. They left everything there, did a cleanup of the place and turned it into a park. Seattle used to have huge fireworks displays on the 4th of July and the entire park would be jam-packed with people to see the show. The prom scene was filmed at the Opera House for the ceiling and stairway scenes, and the gymnasium for the dancing scenes where there were hundreds of extras. The outtakes of this film during the credits are hilarious as well, especially the one where Heath actually kissed Julia in the car. While this film is over the top, it's a fantastic performance by Heath and Julia.

    this movie came out a few weeks after I turned 18 a lot of my friends then had a thing for andrew keegan (joey) I thought heath ledger was the heartthrob of this movie but tbh my celeb crush at the time was still joe mcintyre of the new kids & it stayed that way til I was about to turn 21 and started watching WWE (still called WWF til after my bday) & then it was Edge until in my mid-30s when it became comedian Sal Vulcano it's NEVER been a hollywood actor that was the celeb crush though edge (adam copeland who i met at a book signing) & sal have been in movies that's not their career
