    Could anything be more beautiful than Norma Procter singing Return O God of Hosts? Meltingly beautiful. A true contralto voice singing with such sensitivity and longing.

      Tenortalker The late Kathleen Ferrier’s rendering of this aria is incomparable. To compare Procter to her is very high praise.

      @@jamescam04 Yes James, Kathleen Ferrier's recording with Sir Adrian Boult is deeply moving and was the version I heard first. This makes it even sadder that the aria is abridged - no B section - in that recording. Just as we never got a complete Messiah with Ferrier, which although promised never happened - such a shame. At least Norma and also Helen Watts got to record the whole 'Return' aria with chorus.

      Tenortalker Thank you for the reply 😀 IMO, Ferrier’s rendering of that aria is the gold standard - thanks in no small measure to Handel’s own marvellous genius.

      Would that be Sir Adrian Boult?

      It is lovely. Maureen Forrester also left an exquisite recording of this aria.

    Thank you so very much for uploading this wonderful performance! Richter understood Handel's music as too few understand it today, in my opinion. He always brought out the feelings, emotion, beauty and subtlety of Handel's music, which is sorely missing in most contemporary performances. The orchestra, soloists and choir perform beautifully as well!

    I Cannot Get Enough of " Awake The Trumpets Lofty Sound " !! Eventually the words of this Great Chorus were reworded into A Glorious Christian Chorus, as Handel Soon Realized that this Chorus was much to Sacred to be honoring a Pagan False God Like Dagon!! Thus in its Christian lncarnation This Grand Chorus Represents Zion at Her Most Glorious!!!!! Richter Captures A Sound That Handel Propheticly Wrote For, But Could Only Dream Of !!!...

      It is quite a striking scene. One's eye is drawn to the great depiction of Samson, as he is very handsome and physically attractive. Dalilah's charms are muted. Samson reigns supreme undoubtedly in mind and concept of this 19th century painter.

    Thank you ❤❤❤
    You changed the sequence:
    7. = 2-40: My faith and truth, O Samson, prove
    8. = 2-38: Your charms to ruin led the way
    --------------
    9. Correct title = Honour and arms scorn such a foe
    --------------
    You changed the sequence:
    11. = 3-64: With thunder arm’d, great God, arise!
    12. = 2-60: Fix'd in his everlasting seat
    --------------
    And you didn't mention Jerry Jennings as a singer:
    14. = 3-71: Great Dagon has subdu‘d our foe
    --------------
    Thank you ❤❤❤

      Alexander Young is so great! Beautiful voice but his handling of the text has such gravity . Every word is clear and pregnant with emotion. Quite overwhelming.
