Anne of Green Gables was my whole life when I was a little girl. I needed some beautiful, innocent escapism from the traumas I was experiencing at the time and it was perfect
Since your reading Anne of Green Gables I highly, highly recommend you read the next two books in the series, specifically the third book. It is my favorite and I feel like nobody ever reads beyond book one. I love the first book and it might be objectively better in some ways but the third book contains most of the slow burn romance and is set when she is in college and has some of my favorite characters and locations and I love it so, so much. And I know I'm not alone as I recently got my best friend to read the third book and she agrees it's her favorite as well.
I personally don't think four through seven are that great (still okay but not amazing) but the eight-book which you can read without having read the others is great as well. Its set around Anne's daughter Rilla and is mostly about WWI and is maybe the best WWI book I have ever read.
Yessss, I adore the third book too! My favourite Anne by far! And totally agree they're kinda meh (actually some of them worse than meh - I find some of the plot lines quite misogynistic, especially Anne's House of Dreams) But Rilla gets good again :)

Definitely! Anne of the Island is my favorite out of the series - I loved seeing Anne mature. But the eighth book about Rilla is a close second; it is similar in many ways to Jane Austen’s Emma :)

I am reading Wuthering Heights for the first time and I am absolutely love it, even though I agree that is does not scream summer time. It made me want to read more of the Bronte sisters.
you should try the tenant of wildfell hall its by anne bronte, and one of my all time favourites. not quite as dark as wuthering heights but very strong female main character (which is unfortunately hard to find in classics )

Anne of the Island (the third one in Anne of green gables) is my favorite, honestly one of the best most heartwarming books I have ever read.
Yes Anne of the Island is lovely! As she mentioned in the video, Anne can be kind of irritating in the first book, since she’s just a child and has strong character flaws. I loved how in Anne of the Island we get to see her grow and mature out of those flaws. That book has some really valuable things to say about human nature. :)

if you want to get to some hemmingway, "the old man and the sea" is only about 100 pages or 2.5 hrs of audiobook. its the intense summer in cuba, and the difficulties of a fisherman trying to catch a merlin. wonderful ocean and fish descriptions.
And loads of symbolism (which I can never get enough of) despite Hem's steadfast refusal to admit it. Oh, Hem!

Dante is a compulsory read here in Italy and it's reeeeeally difficult to understand at times. There are lots of references to medieval Italian history, mythology, religion, so I really hope your edition has got lots of good notes. If you need help with some parts of it feel free to ask, it's an adventure no one should face on their own!

For sci-fi romance, you should DEFINITELY read This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone! It's a novella, and it's probably the best thing I've read yet this year. And Amal El-Mohtar is Canadian, if that helps sell it!

I recommend looking into reviews from BIPOC readers of The Goldfinch. There are some harsh reviews on this book; thought you should know going into it.
My current goal and tbr is to read all of the books on my shelf that I own or series that I partially own, which consists of roughly 50 books (you have me very excited to read Phantom of the Opera), and I want to do it before summer ends. It's going to be a long, long struggle, but I leave for college at the end of August so nows the time! Thank you for inspiring me to read again!

I finally read through all of L.M. Montgomery’s chronicles of Anne Shirley between last August/September 2020 through to about February 2021 and loved each one and how you see Anne’s life grow and change and develop was just wonderful. One of my favourite series of novels (tied with Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women series for me) 😊 those stories are just so wholesome! 💜 I hope you enjoy the rest of Anne Shirley and her saga.
I read oliver twist.. When I was 11 year old.. And that was the first book which I read in my life.. Still love that book.. Will reread it someday!! 🥰💗

My advice on Dante: if you read Inferno, go ahead and read the whole Comedy. It's kind of weird to me that the Inferno gets so much attention when the whole point of the poem is journeying through and *from* hell ultimately to paradise.
Oliver Twist is such a great book, I would argue my favorite out of Dicken’s work, but A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities. are up there also. Anne Of Green Gables is so good.

i'd recommend the long way to a small angry planet by becky chambers if you're looking for a sci-fi with some romance. the romance is definitely not the main focus, as the book focuses more on the (more platonic) relationship between the crew on the Wayfarer. anyway, it is a really interesting take on the sci-fi genre where it mostly focuses on the characters, not the plot

I can highly recommend you The Luna Chronicles from Marissa Meyer! It's one of my favorite book series of all time 😇 I love the characters and it has a very interesting story! Each book entails a science fictional twist on a classic Fairy tale 🙈 Also in every book is a different love story, which is very cute ❤

On impulse, I bought Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix. Quite short, 200 pages so read it in a day. Very much Twilight Zone meets Flat pack furniture. All your favourite horror tropes and a few twists. A great holiday read, or when you are at one of those awful works seminars where your management tells you that you are their most important asset and still treats you like crap and pays minimum wage.
I definitely cannot wait for an updated bookshelf tour. So, so excited!!
If you’re looking for sci-fi and want a challenge after War and Peace, tackle the actual Dune series. I did all of them last year and, while they’re not my absolute favourites, they seem like they’d be up your alley in that they have a more philosophical bent.
I just got the entire Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon lot and the short stories. I'm almost finished with vol. 3 and I am just SO happy with it. I gasped when you mentioned it! 💖

Hahahaha!!!!! I stopped the video at 1:38 to tell you how hard I laughed at your construction noises reaction! Just classic. A few weeks ago, a relentless roofing crew, they were legion, reroofed our homes and I thought by the end of it, between the troops on the roof, with their exploding nail guns, shake-the-house-down stomping, and their near- continuous shouting, and the OBNOXIOUS black, diesel-engine MONSTER truck, rumbling, grumbling, vrooming, operated by the apparent bossman who NEVER shut it off--it absolutely dominated the neighborhood from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm every day, I was gonna lose my mind! Such fun. Fun fun. I feel you! Okay, back to the video.....

i read the goldfinch with the audiobook and i really liked the voices and the way it was performed. it made me feel so much more connected to a certain character! (hobie) i would def recommend!! i listened to mine on audible, but i think they have the same one on libby! happy reading 🤍
it took me awhile to realize that the howl's moving castle poster was actually pasted onto her wall and that it wasn't oddly edited in the video 🤣

I just finished reading a collection of Borges sonnets this morning and absolutely loved every single one. It's been extra special because, while my Spanish is pretty rusty these days, I was able to read and mostly understand it in its original written language. It's incredible how much meaning and beauty is lost in the translation process! It makes me want to study German so I can appreciate Rilke's work as it ought to be.
The Divine Comedy changed my life. I hope you find it as rich and meaningful as I did!
I just lovveee your videos. Can you please do a video on how you listen to audio books? Do you read as well as listen at the same time? Do you speed up the narration? How do you take notes or annotations with audio books? Do you use audible or borrow from library? So many questions 🤣
I know this question isn't for me but I hope my input helps :)
1) Yes, I read and listen with some of the books. Sometimes I use one method over the other and sometimes I like to engage different formats of reading which is always nice.
2) I speed up the narration to 1.75 for my audiobooks, it's easier and more efficient for me. You don't have to. If you are not used to audiobooks, stick with the normal speed. You can gradually work your way to a faster speed.
3) I take notes/annotations with audiobooks by listening intently. The way you would take annotations with physical books does not change. You are looking to analyze the story e.x. plot, characters, writing (may be harder at first, but it also works) stay the same as it would with a physical book. I have my Book Journal by me when I listen to audiobooks, this helps A LOT. The point is to listen and jot down notes on what you think about the story with evidence to back up your thoughts. If you do not have a book journal you can use your notes on your phone, word, or notion. Doing chores, going for a walk, sitting down and drawing (or coloring a coloring book) are other ways to really help you digest the story.
And I borrow from the library.

Night Film is an excellent thriller, I do love it! Try it! I think if you listen to the audiobook still follow up with the physical, because the multi media elements are cool and athmospheric.

I would really recommend Red Rising! I really enjoyed the first book, but the second one just blew me away and the third was also good. It's also a saga now, so there are 5 books out and the sixth is on its way.
Is the second book as Hunger Games- ish as the first? I only have 40 pages left of the first and I am pretty neutral about picking up the second book.
I've read Red Rising and genuinely loved it. It's quite grim and gritty in parts, but as an ancient Rome/Greece history lover I was THERE for its worldbuilding, and the characters were wonderful too. I need to the rest of the series though.

I highly recommend the Durling and Martinez translation of the Inferno/Commedia! I am an Italian major and medievalist and that translation is absolutely incredible. It's on Amazon and not too expensive.

Good luck with Dante's Inferno! I've read it once and it was disappointing for me, but I think some of that was the translation and, especially so, the translator's notes that irked me and bled in to the story. Otherwise might have liked the experience more. You have a different edition, I also have a different one I plan to eventually reread (might just do that alongside your read if you do a read-along), so hopefully we both come away with a better experience than I did reading it the first time. I'll be excited to see some of the other books as you review/talk about them since some of them sound intriguing.
Oof this is already long, but I wanted to share my reading done and planned for this month. So. I've finished 5 books--'Legend of Sleepy Hollow', 'There's a Hole in my Sidewalk' by Portia Nelson, 'Song of Achilles', 'Letters to a Young Poet,' and 'The Warden' by Anthony Trollope. I am currently working through 'Priory of the Orange Tree' and Stendhal's 'The Red and the Black' to read before the next listed book. Finally, I plan to read 'Bleak House' by Dickens since I need to have it read for the fall and it's thick and 'Fathers and Children' by Ivan Turgenev. I am also expecting to add a book or two if I get through the books and maintain the rate I've been reading. Sorry for the long message, again. Much luck to everyone and happy reading!

Hemingway writes really amazing characters that feel like people, and his prose just hits you like a ton of bricks - in a good way. It's incredibly descriptive, almost "imaginistic", but very easy to read.

Hi Emma I would like to recommend you The Dutch house by Ann Patchett. It is a dark fairy tale, set over the course of five decades about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. I really think you will enjoy that book.

Hi! So excited to hear about your June reading! Your TBR looks like a lot of fun. :) I studied the Divine Comedy for class a while ago and it was amazing - if possible, you should try to read the whole thing, rather than just the Inferno! :) It’s not meant to be separated from the other two parts of the comedy, so in a lot of ways reading just the Inferno and not Purgatorio and Paradiso is kinda like reading only the first few chapters of a book and not finishing it lol. But I get that the whole comedy is pretty long, so it might not be feasible to fit all the parts into your reading schedule. Anyway, have a great day and thanks for sharing your reading plans!
Hi Emmie! one of my friends showed me your channel and it got me back into reading. I haven't really read for my own personal enjoyment outside of school since middle school, so it's really exciting to get back into it (freshman year of university really burnt me out on reading especially). Last month I read If We Were Villains, The Cats of Roxville Station (old throwback to my childhood), and Norwegian Wood. This month I just finished The Bell Jar, and I needed something light-hearted after reading it, so I'm starting the Narnia series for the first time ever. If you or any other viewers have some book recommendations based on some of the titles I've listed, I'd really love that :) btw, can't wait to see the annotations video! I love annotating bc it's so satisfying to look at and pick through them after a while
If you liked The Bell Jar, you might like Madame Bovary. I know it seems like a stretch, but Emma Bovary struggles with mental health a lot throughout the book, and you also get to read romance!

Pinsky read at out library when I was finishing my undergrad. There's an open university course offered at Yale for the Divine Comedy. I've read it three or four times but it's still kind of difficult, and easy at the same time. The course is very good.

My brother recommended red rising to me, specifically the audio book. It was the first audio book that i ever listened to (i also bought the paperback because i can't focus on just audio) and it was amazing!!! I don't read that much sci-fi so i kept delaying my read but when i finally started reading it Owowow i got the second and third books halfway through the first because I was already sold. Amazing writing, world building, and characters.
You inspired me to get that exact edition of the Inferno, and it is SO GOOD and also really funny. Who knew Dante was a comedian

If ur into folk horror/modern gothic horror I would recommend The Hollow Places! Really weird and unsettling but soo good!
The only thing I've done reading wise this month is to slowly read the Decameron. It has been an absolute joy and a brilliant way to end my nights. I feel so unhurried and relaxed.
