- Starting a budget kitchen remodel, so I tore out a tile countertop,
and installed butcher block. Counter is from Ikea, and is really inexpensive. This is episode one of a budget kitchen remodel.
One of the best DIY instructional videos I have seen! Straight to the point, no yammering on with useless information and realistic to what the average home owner/contractor might actually find. Well done sir.
I thought this video was great, very informative and well presented. The only thing I would suggest is to treat and seal the butcher block before installation so that the bottom can also be treated and sealed, which will limit the block’s exposure to humidity from the bottom.
I was expecting all kinds of crap flying all over the place but that was the cleanest demo I've seen.

Watched this vid many times and when I finally installed Lowe’s Baltic Birch bb, all went smoothly thanks to you! [Only change was conditioning entire block b/f installing using Howard’s BB Oil first, then Conditioner. Thirsty wood took 6 coats of oil!] Kitchen looks amazing for $300! Wouldn't’ have attempted without your vid. Thanks again!

Thank you!!! I finished off most of the kitchen BUT was doing wall/electrical work around the countertop on one cabinet so I didn't fasten it down and... well.... the pandemic, etc.... I FINALLY finished the wall behind it... and could NOT remember how to attach the Ikea countertop to the cabinet. I knew it would be easy... It is Ikea... BUT I could not remember what I needed to do that... so instead of pulling out the drawers & crawling into the cabinet I thought quick look on UA-cam... AND Viola!! your vid!! TY!! Now all I gotta do is find the brackets...they are probably tucked away under it somewhere...knowing me. Like with like. Fingers crossed. TY!! If not... I will just call Ikea for replacements. By the way, I just use cheap drug store mineral oil on mine. The old formula (from my grandad) for new butcher block is 1 coat a day for 1 week, I coat a week for a month, one coat a month for a year & 1coat a year after that. Looks gorgeous & stands up to about anything.

Nice how to. You can use a stop collar on your bits to control hole depth, it's safer than using tape. I use the same oil/wax treatment on my butcher block. It's great stuff. Do an occasional water bead test to see when it's time to reapply.
That cement was a pain in the butt and you never gave up.

I ordered a butcher block from Home Depot and although the outside dimensions are perfect, I really wish it was thinner. It’s 1 1/2” thick and since I’m planning to use it as a fold down table, the weight is just more than I think the brackets can manage when folded down.

I think the only thing I would recommend is sealing the whole thing, not just the top surfaces. The more sealed you make it the less it will move.
Wonder how those counters have held up over 5 years.

I use same kind of butcher block for my work bench top because lumber prices is too high.

What was the model of the butcher block? I am looking at the IKEA butcher blocks now. Also are they solid wood? It seems like some are and some are 1/8" laminates.
It's called "Hammarp" - solid oak 1 and 1/8" thick.
Ikea also has less expensive butcher block that is not solid wood - The oak is holding up really well.
Hello romcomfan. Your comment just make me throw-up in my throat a little bit. Please do some research before you post your assumptions as the truth. Ikea's kitchen products are produced throughout the world, but not china! Besides, the butcherblock counters are made out of solid woods. Whether its birch, oak or walnut.Please don't clutter other people's beautiful videos, with your uneducated guesses.GREAT VIDEO RUSS!!!!

I was searching to do the exact reverse. IKEA butcher block not holding up to a 'working' kitchen. Too many flaws with more stains and splinters popping up :( It's made in China.
what product do you use to clean it that wont damage the surface?
Any mild kitchen cleaner like Lysol Kitchen works fine. Finish is very durable and does not damage easily.
What countertop is this one? whats the name to find it at ikea?
It is called "Hammarp" 74" X 11/8" thick - solid oak. This was the best butcher block deal I could find. Great value. It's holding up really well.
How much was this block from IKEA ?
about $120 - it was the best butcher block deal out there.
Could have used a few helpers and pulled up plywood, substrate, and tile all in one go without all of the chiseling.
Sure, it would work... BUT it would also damage the (probably MDF) cabinet below... better safe, than having to put in a new cabinet too..... Also, he was working alone.... that kinda weight is VERY difficult to move alone... especially without damaging walls & doorways on the way out... not to mention the floor when it gets dropped.

FYI, it’s not a solid product. That’s why it was the best deal you could find.
Wrong - This is solid oak - check out the specs on Ikea.com It has been over 3 years since the install, and it looks good as new. Ikea does make some butcher block counters that use a veneer over an MDF core, but they also offer a solid oak option. Best deal on butcher block out there.

That's not a "Butcher Block", that's just "Wood counter top". A real Butcher Block is made to chop meat and other things, that's why a Butcher Block comes with the grain up (stronger than plain slice) and not planks like yours. Are you gonna chop on top of you counter? I'm sure not, because you don't have a butcher block, you have a Wood counter top.
Bear in mind that the reason the counter top is so affordable, is that it is not solid butcher block, it is a 2 mm thick veneer or hardwood on top of regular cheap wood. So a major dent or damage will not be fixable by just sanding it down.
