Wow, this is an awesome version of Movin' On and a great post . I am a big John Kay fan. One of the top voices in the history of rock up there with Morrison, Burden, Paul Rogers and a few choice others. This is even a better video with Kent Henry added. Kent is one of the bonafide great underrated guitarists in rock history. When you listen to Ride Captain Ride, you are hearing Kent do all the tasty clean licks and if you have ever heard the solo in Ain't No Rules in California (also Blues Image) you know this guy could play. Kent RIP.
Kent Henry was with Blues Image before joining Steppenwolf, he did the first guitar solo in Ride Captain Ride. Kent appeared on the For Ladies Only album by Steppenwolf. Hist stint in the band wasn't very long. Rumor has it he had a falling out with Jerry Edmonton, who was the drummer for the band.
Hey, thanks so much for posting this. I’ve been on a big Steppenwolf kick for months now, I can’t quite get over it. So many of their songs are spot on for the world we live in today. Just timeless music and John Kay’s voice just reverberates inside you in a way not too many can. I appreciate your sharing these jewels!❤
I remember seeing this back in 1972. One of our local TV stations aired the 'Rollin' on the River Series' (hosted by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition) right before prime time. I was only 10 but already a big Steppenwolf and John Kay fan, thanks to the influence of my big brother.
Lukas Fin Glan and organist Hugh OSullivan played in a Canadian band called Bush before this. 3 Dog night covered their songs. After this, Glan played with Lou Reed on Rock and Roll Animal and Sally Can't Dance.
Lukas Finn, Whitey also played on the "Welcome To My Nightmare" Alice Cooper album & film and toured with Alice for 8 years until 1981. He was also an in demand session drummer in L.A.,N.Y., & Toronto for years and played on at least a hundred or more albums.
But what is that surgical tube hanging out of his mouth? John liked to venture, other muscians were using the same gig in that time. PETER FRAMPTOM "DO you feel like I do?" And he opened for Steppinwolf in Boston doing the same gig in the 70's. Amazing.
The tube belongs to a device called Talk Box. It's connected to the guitar speaker and the singer can change the sound with his lips, then it's amplified by the singer's mike. Sort of an early version of the Vocoder
balanb312 No offense, but personally I'm not much of a Peter Frampton fan, even though he's obviously a great guitarist. But another guitar player that sometimes rigs up with that tube like John Kay did here is Joe Walsh.🎸
When it comes to talk boxes everyone thinks Peter Frampton invented it. Lots of people used them going way back. Probably the most hit tunes with talk box goes to Zapp band talking keyboard singing lead on everything ( Dance Floor, Do Wa Ditty, I Can Make You Dance , Computer Love )
I'll never understand how Kay wasn't a successful solo artist, he was great at it but never could escape being stereo typed as "Steppenwolf". But this is freaking great!
I think this is great now, but to be honest I can understand why people were tired of the electric blues by the early-mid seventies. I was too young then, but even hitting my twenties through the 80s I noticed that a lot of my favorite 60s bands had singers that went solo in the seventies or bands like Honey Pie (Small Faces in 60s) or Eric Bourdon (Animals in 60s) and were caught up doing a 'heavy kinda stodgy' blues. Didn't like Clapton either. Some went the jazz way too, also awful. This is light enough, almost Ry Coodery abut I could get tired of it too. No wonder disco and (briefly) garage punk made such an impact.
@@mebeasensei ~ That's Humble Pie, not honey pie, and only one member of Small Faces was in the band, Steve Marriott. The other three stayed together, and became simply Faces, joined by Ron wood and Rod Stewart.
@@mebeasensei Very good observation Tommy. I definitely agree. IMO, disco & rap are without question THE worst things to ever happen to the music industry.🎸
Bought the album that this song was on.....Steppenwolf died a slow death with me; I consider them one of the truly great bands America ever produced. Even bought a few of their 70's LP's with the entire original lineup except the super Mars Bonfire had left. (Replaced by Bobby Cochran)
Great cover of this song. John's Kay brings it. George Biodo playing bass. Kent Henry on Guitar. I think Whitey Glan on drums and Hugh Sullivan on Keyboards.
Both Kay and the Stones didn't pick up on Old Hank's great metaphor: "You switched your engine now I ain't got time for a triflin' woman on my main line ..."
AllBobsAllTheTime You are SO right!😂 I grew up on the Hank Snow version too, listening to that barroom honkytonk music on my Dad's radio. I love John Kay's version also, but when I play it on MY flattop, I'm Hank.😂🎸
Rik K Thanks Rik... I didn't realize that. I'm a leftover Steppenwolf fan from that era.... of course along with.... CCR, Beatles, Canned Heat, the Who, the Guess Who, Hendrix etc🎸
He toured to promote it as the "John Kay band", and when they hit Europe he opened up for Steppenwolf, he would do his solo stuff first with these guys here, change into the black leather and come back out with Steppenwolf which I'm sure was draining!
John Kay is one of the truly underrated greats!
And to think his voice got better with each passing decade. One of the very few to be even better at 70 than 30. Amazing.
John Kay is a rock n roll legend!
His voice does this tune a lot of justice

I was about 16 when he toured behind this record, saw him open for a little band named DEEP PURPLE on BOSTON COMMON. 'Machine Head' just out.
John Kay and the band are my favorite and Pentti Glan is such an amazing drummer!
I'm not familiar with Glan, but as a Finn also myself interested. Would you tell me more about the guy?
Lukas Fin Glan and organist Hugh OSullivan played in a Canadian band called Bush before this. 3 Dog night covered their songs. After this, Glan played with Lou Reed on Rock and Roll Animal and Sally Can't Dance.
@ Joel Garcia All right! Thank you for telling me. I can see it now. Glan was born in Helsinki, just about 90 km from my residence here.
Lukas Finn, Whitey also played on the "Welcome To My Nightmare" Alice Cooper album & film and toured with Alice for 8 years until 1981. He was also an in demand session drummer in L.A.,N.Y., & Toronto for years and played on at least a hundred or more albums.
yeah the drum piece in this song is just kick ass!
Sweet riff n' groove...just picked up Forgotten Songs & Unsung Heroes just the other day. This was an stellar closer (first-time listen).
That album is John's chef d'oeuvre. There's a certain melancholy and bluesyesque feel to the whole record, a masterpiece!
Wow! So great 2 see these vids from the past that many of us hadn't seen prior. John Kay sounds & looks so awesome here!
John at his best.
intense !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That guys voice is cool
Wow -- loved his treatment of this old Hank Snow tune. Thanks for posting.

I thought that was Mike Pinera

George Biondo on bass, crazy about his back up vocals!!
Interesting how he sounds like Rod Stewart!
Yeah he does! Especially his vocals on Steppenwolf 7.
George is a heck of a nice guy as well.
Biondo IS nice and a great talent

I'm a Trump supporter. But fear not!!!! Like you, I'm a huge fan of Steppenwolf & John Kay.😂👋🎸
@@levon1063 Jerry and Goldy were Canadian, John was German via Toronto, Mike and Rushton were from California. A mixed bag!

John Kay was playing a Gibson Byrdlandin that video. Toney Tillery Isaiah.
It was originally released
on Dunhill Records,1972.
great
Kay and the band fuckin kill it..
Great cover of this song. John's Kay brings it.
George Biodo playing bass. Kent Henry on Guitar. I think Whitey Glan on drums and Hugh Sullivan on Keyboards.
Penti Glan on drums.
Good knowledge.Great band.I had gatefold sleeve.

John Kay was 28 years old in the video.
Before Peter Frampton
& Joe Walsh.
Kent Henry always looked as if he wanted to be somewhere else.
I always noticed that about Charlie Watts while he played with The Rolling Stones.
Wasn't that lead singer in steppinwolf
Steppenwolf, yes.
Hugh a good drummer
Penti "Whitey" Glan on drums, Hugh O' Sullivan on keyboards, sadly both dead now.
Estuvieron en Puerto Rico en El Shannan Pun actually Funky Night Club haven anos
The Bag .Rare gimmick back then .
It's the prototype Talk Box, years before Joe Walsh or Peter Frampton thought to use one. John Kay first used it on "Hey Lawdy Mama" in 1969.

Hank snow song
Is that Kent Henry on guitar?
.. it is
Yes, Kent Henry
Indeed it is. What a bitch of a guitar player. Played the first solo in "Ride Captain Ride." That solo is absolutely perfect for that song.
Blues Image...I did not know that !
Am I right in saying John wanted to tour this album, but was dissuaded?
He toured to promote it as the "John Kay band", and when they hit Europe he opened up for Steppenwolf, he would do his solo stuff first with these guys here, change into the black leather and come back out with Steppenwolf which I'm sure was draining!

Nope, it ain't.
the stones have never done anything better than John Kay.

Kay aced it.🎸
No comparison. Kay's voice, Henry's guitar, Biondo's bass. The Stones can't compete with this.
