This is sooooooo good. Edgy, grooving, dirty, trippy, kick ass, gritty, real rock and roll song! Still sounds so awesome all these years later. 99% of modern music in 2022 can not touch this. . . and water is still wet.
Steppenwolf is timeless. As relevant and hot today as it was in 1969. The Sookie Sookie was a dance, at least that is what Goldy McJohn told me. According to John Kay, Sookie Sookie was played heavily on black radio stations but they pulled it when they found out Steppenwolf was a white band. Goldy told it differently, he said it was banned from radio because they though John was singing 'suck me'.
Classic 60's video with minimalist production: black & white; an old World War II bomber as a prop; focus on the star, John Kay; quick cuts to the girl dancer and the band; lay in the kick ass sound track. The whole thing probably cost a hundred bucks to make (I'm kidding), but the end result was a great vid. And what about John Kay? Two words: ultimate cool.
I never got to see the original line-up but later on, the John Kay & Steppenwolf version came to my city and I caught that show. Still good as I remember. Now I have to listen to my Steppenwolf Live Album.
One of my all-time favorite tunes by one of the greatest bands ever and do any other Quaalude aficionados out there notice the Soper sign on the stage at the beginning of this video...?
jeffrey mcglone I saw Goverment Mule , Warren Haynes , playing that. Dont’t step.. one of the best guita sounds ever and I have heard a lot of them, I tell you
In an interview John Kay said this was their second single release (Feb 68) & began to gather steam for them as a "rising" hit played mostly on black R&B radio stations. Things went bust when it was learned they were white and the single sank. Their luck radically changed in May/June when they released "Born to be Wild" ...and the rest, as they say, is history!
Steppenwolf era todo lo que una banda de rock debia ser, sento las bases de la estetica rockera en el escenario y todos los que vinieron despues siguieron sus pasos
I’m gonna be 69 here on the 25th & hands down this was the best band of those days, his Mom saved him from the Nazis & is he Shades he wears is because he’s legally blind
Ahh, MEMories.. Named my first doggo after this. Good ol Sookie Sue(her momma's name was Sue). Mom never got it, lol. Good thing- they stole mah dog, hahaha... after I took a trip when my old man got killed by a drunk driver.. I came back to collect my dog, and mom said, "OHH, let her STAY!" They turned my dog into a watermelon with legs. Sorry, Sook... no more mountain climbing or chasing cows in fields we cut through, no more swims in the lake, dragging TREES back to the shore(Lab)... she sold out for the bacon. Dad put her down and never even told me... I was there when she was BORN & kept the litter from being put in a burlap sack and tossed in a river. She was my KID! Never forgave him for that. He let her be thrown into a DUMPSTER. Sorry, Sookie. I shoulda protected you from them.... cry everytime I hear this one.

I agree. I have an idea for an action comedy screenplay "Space Pirate Radio."
Man people just don't groove like this anymore. That guitar slide, the drum fills, the organ, the bass
Always loved those short, jagged guitar fills by Michael Monarch.

jeffrey mcglone I saw Goverment Mule , Warren Haynes , playing that. Dont’t step.. one of the best guita sounds ever and I have heard a lot of them, I tell you
"Born To Be Wild" was actually an homage to hot rodding... "I like smoke and lightning; heavy metal thunder..". But yes, became the anthem of bikers.
0:33 You just know that lady dancing on top of the airplane was fun as heck to party with..
great tone on the guitar...17 yr old lead guitar player...funky...Nobody played organ like that...Bass player was funky too...very riffy player
