Hi there from England UK I have a pomchi and her back legs are collapsing , we took her to the vet, her back legs at the ball joints ( I think ) she said to think of a car with the rod that connects to the wheels . She said it's both that are crumbling , we are told to crate her and no going upstairs or jumping up. She's on a leash indoors untill we get a crate . I and my wife are so upset I would rather lose my own life than live without my dog . I'm disabled and have no extra money if she needs surgery , she snores and stretches her neck a lot which makes me worry about her trachea. She's about 8 or 9.
@@rab-cnesbit4181 Hi from New Zealand, I can so feel your pain! My elderly dog is also going through a painful time with a torn cruciate ligament & like you I too cannot afford surgery. It's so unfair that we have to endure this extremely heart wrenching pain when we can't even help our beloved pets! If I was a vet, I would do surgeries for free for those who cannot afford it. I could not stand by & let someones precious pet suffer, or worse be put to sleep for something so little as a leg injury. My local small town vet is terrible, it is the only one available within 100km & they know it, by over charging for every little thing! They even make prices up! It's disgusting, unethical & greedy! They have traumatised me to a point of uncontrollable crying & panic attacks, especially 2yrs ago when they refused my beautiful girl anymore pain meds & gave me no choice than to put her to sleep!! I suffer from PTSD & so something as devastating as losing a pet sends me into having suicidal thoughts. I am 50yrs old & will not be getting anymore pets again, not when I can't afford to help them in their time of need. The pain is just too terrible! I wish the vets on here would answer our questions, especially when we are suffering like this & just need some advice. If you are going to manage a professional UA-cam channel, then at least answer the important questions related to your profession! Anyway I just wanted to let you know that there's someone out there feeling exactly like you right now & my heart goes out to you & your beloved pet. God bless & I hope things work out for you both. 🐶🙏💜 PS: I thought you should try this product for your dog's trachea & knees. There are different types for all sorts of problems, they are very effective & have many excellent reviews! I highly recommend this amazing product of Dr John Prudden. Will this work with a 52kg rottwieler. She apparenrly needs TLPO surgery which i was going to get a loan to do however seems high chance they can doother leg as well and i jist cannot get into ten grand debt when have medical bills for myself also. Happy to put mine aside for her to do one but if she ruptures second within small timeframe it will be impossible to do. Would u reccomend though for such a large 7yr old rotti that TLPO is best to reduce chance of it getting worse
Dear Dr. Jones, after owning 4 Rottweilers in 30 years, I had surgery performed on 3 cruciate ligaments. The laters surgery, new method, was really very difficult for my dog. When my fourth Rottweiler was diagnosed with the same condition, we had surgery scheduled, but because this dog is very difficult to treat, very hyperactive, we decided at the last minute to cancel. We thought we will try your sugested non surgical treatment. After 26 weeks of limited activity, slowly increasing the walks, today my dog walks as if she never had the rupture. We thank you so much for your advise. My dog is 86 lb and it still worked. Our vet told us without the surgery she will never get better, and she was really bad, her leg was just hanging behind her. We are so grateful.
Omg I am sooooo grateful to see and w te as this today My dog has been laying down for the past day and I am trying to research pain med. what to do and not to do! I hate to see him hurting
@@michellemailloux3592 I was so happy it worked. We had an advantage, we are retired and so we could give it our time and attention. We eliminated the stairs, build a ramp to enter the house and used harness we bought from Amazon for the peeing from the beginning.
Alena Ruta I was given the same scenario........ surgery with no alternative. I’m going to try the splint method along with some supplements and essential oils
My little chihuahua did her cruiate ligament about 5 years ago. We chose not to do surgery. I had to carry her around everywhere and no exercise at all for one year. She was on 24 hour pain relief the whole time. I put her on turmeric as well as green lip muscle. She was amazing and did not do the other leg. She’s now 15 and is still going strong. 💜
I’m going through the same thing. However, combined with that his arthritis and on gabapentin, methocarbamol, Galiprant and CBD oil he still whimpers constantly. We honestly can’t afford surgery or therapy. His other leg has started showing signs of problems as well. After reading this I have him in a cage and will try keeping him there for a week and see if that will help. Thanks for sharing your story.
Does cold laser therapy or prolotherapy help loose ligaments? My dog can't walk and was told by veterinarian the inflammation on his joints and knees affected him.
My dog is getting acupuncture and cold laser therapy. Two veterinarians have told us the inflammation damaged his joints and will not be able to walk. It is heart breaking. Will prolotherapy help? It happened so fast and he has walked his whole life.
I wrote a comment here before about using an ace bandaged on my dog's tear and didn't get a response. This happened to my dog this past winter. A complete tear. I was told by the vet that she will never heal without surgery and was being pressured to do so. I decided to research it and took the holistic approach (keeping her sedentary, preventing her from jumping, running, only slow sniff and pee walks, etc.). She is now 100% healed. Compare that to my sister's dog who had the same thing happen to him. He got the surgery and still limps and has difficulty walking. My dog acts like it never happened.
Three days ago, I lost my precious Bernie to a splenic hemangiosarcoma. This morning when I went our my my rescued border collie, he was running and began whimpering. I only got him a month ago. Immediately I picked her up, carried him home. I wrapped his leg from toes to hip with an ace bandage. Then gave him Meloxicam, collagen supplement and curcurmin supplement. How do you know if it's a sprain or an acl or other ligament tear? I honestly can't afford another expensive vet visit after all I have spent at the veterinarian just 3 days ago.
@@talesfromtheleashexpatdogl1426 I took my dog to the vet. The one good thing she gave me to help with the pain was Deramaxx. My dog had to take 50ml. twice a day. The only thing is that it made her feel better when she wasn't fully healed, so I had to make sure she didn't run and jump again until she was fully healed. I do hope your dog feels better and that you got him to the vet to at least diagnose the problem properly.
I have an older larger dog who is working as my my service animal has a physically disabled person and I would really like to thank you for your medical advice videos they have all been great help my dog and my brother's dog have been getting in better shape thank you.
Reading some of these questions/comments a few people do not really pay attention to the video. To all, best of luck. I too am not trusting of everything I see and hear,. it is the world we live in today, all $$$ based. However, when you do find a trustworthy person, or a product that is working for you, if you are like me you stick with it. That is why our household is dependent on holistic measures; plant based remedies and like Dr. Jones said; in many videos; few or no side effects .... With this awful injury he has done this surg.! So, he has seen the problem from both sides. This is good enough for us. Keep going, Dr. Jones.
My Rottiweiler has his rupture, we decided against the surgery so we restricted him from running and jumping for 8 weeks, he only go outside just for a short walk to wee. Hes all better now and happily running around every now and then like he never had his injury it was amazing to see and we are so glad we didn't go ahead with the surgery. The vet bill wasn't the issue its just how they do the surgery procedure that we didn't like. hope this help anyone.
My vet instructed the same for my girl. Just curious swooping through anything else I can do. She loves running and herding so this is torture for her now. She's stuck inside away from all the other dogs just in case she tries to play with them.
Thank you so much Dr Jones, you gave the best, sound & visual advise I found for healing my healthy 14 year old, springer spaniel, collie/husky cross dog’s BCL naturally.. I ordered an orthodog brace to support her leg, restricted her movement for 12 weeks, reduced her food only a bit as she was not moving much. She was happy to just lollop around! The Metacam my vet prescribed for pain & inflammation upset her so I gave her cbd oil & added turmeric to her food instead which seemed to work well. I massaged her leg muscles gently daily so she wouldnt seize up! I started out with a 5min walk after a month! Following months l increased her walking time very slowly. After 6 months she recovered amazingly well & happily running again.. I still put the harness on her to go walking for support but she no longer wears it in the house. Her other leg seem to be ok for now. I am so grateful to you 👏🏻👏🏻🎉
Thank you so much for this information, my pit bull is going in the morning to be sedated to check both back hind legs, shes's so active very active, but she hurt one knee and babied it and then hurt the other knee, now both knees are hurting her but of course shes favoring one which is the worse, so I didnt know about this brace, I feel more educated about this now, so tomorrow when I go in I know what to ask, we have such a busy summer planned and we always take her with us so this is very important, thank you so much for this information, you are a God send for all of us and our girl Sadie! Thank you again, kindly, sharon
Hey Dr. Jones we did all of this with no braces. My wife and I scheduled our days off so one of us was always home with our olde English Jersey. We did take her to our vet and it was a torn ACL. We restricted her to one floor no stairs no jumping for 8 weeks and no walks just bathroom breaks. Took her back for a check -up. I was told start walking her for 1 week no more than a block every second day. After that if all is good 1 block every day. If all is good walk all you want no run time for 1 month. Now restrict the run time for 6 months and she will be fine. Well Doc she seems better than new. Thank you. Oh and I do now feed sardines once a week and green tea always. You are a Legend in Alberta we Love you.
Wow THANK YOU! you have 747,526 views as of this moment! That says a lot about the benefits you provide to dog lovers. My sweet Bernese blew out her ACL in Canada and surgery is often upward of up to $5,000-10,000 dollars. The relief I feel watching your video is huge as this is currently my only option. Will keep you posted!
Hello ... sorry to hear about your puppy. We did get her a brace that was customized. Here in Canada it was $700. We also have her getting ozone therapy as well as laser therapy. She’s a Bernese Mountain dog and her favourite thing to do is jump and run so it’s hard to keep her steady but she seems to be feeling much better. My friend has a husky was a sled dog and she had the same brace..... With the use of the brace within a few months she was walking well again and running within a year. They did not get surgery. I’m hoping to post a video and a good ending story in a few months but so far so good. The most difficult thing is keeping a big healthy active loving dog quiet. Hope that you have success too.
Oh just an add-on, we found a company that made a brace that went on both legs and was balanced across the hips. Apparently this is a good way to keep the other hip and ligament from also running into trouble.
@@donna-leezmenak8040hello, do you by chance have the name of the company that sells the brace you’re talking about? My boy is going thru a cruciate rupture/tear on his right leg and his left leg is already weak. I’ve chosen not to go the surgery route because he is 11yrs old and has arthritis in his hips.
I just got the orthodog cruciate care brace for my #155 Dutch Shepherd-9 years old. It seems to be really helping him get up and about. I feel hopeful. I had asked the vet who diagnosed him with torn acl-if there was some kind of brace or splint. She said she never found any that work and only mentioned a $3,500 + surgery & anti-inflammatories. She said he would have to lose weight to even have surgery. He's not really fat but is a BIG guy. My granddaughter works in rescue & said she knows people have euthanized their dogs because of the injury & cost of surgery! I appreciate you recommending this & have been watching your videos/newsletter. Thank you!
Hi Doctor Jones and Thanks so much for looking out for our pets. I also appreciate that you never make anyone feel bad if they cannot afford high cost surgeries. I just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on the Chiropractic technique called VOM for cruciate tears? I had a really inexpensive yet highly effective knee surgery done in the 90's called the Over and Under repair. Nobody does this anymore yet it worked beautifully on my 90lb girl. Do you know why nobody does it now? My Beardie is 50 lbs and is a very fit agility dog yet just blew out his knee in class. My vet says it's a complete tear but I don't want to put him through surgery at 10 years old. Can conservative management repair this and what supplements do you suggest? Thanks and sorry the post is so long.
Dr. Jones, you are a Godsend to pet owners. My Standard Poodle just tore his CCL today. He's 13 years old and acts like a goofy teenager. He is always always on a leash because of blindness and arthritis. I'm confidant with your recommendations of using the Ortho brace. I'm a bit calmer now with a plan to get one ordered asap. Like many pet owners I am a senior on limited income and never financially prepared for pet emergencies, sobering but true. I've had ,3 other Standards who passed around the age of 8 yrs old so this guy has been a blessing to have him so many years longer, but I know his days are numbered and I want to give him the best quality of life I can . Bles you for helping us, knowing myself that there are lots of Vets out there who prey on the almighty dollar more than a reasonable healthcare alternative for our precious companions.
God bless you. My 10-Year old fur baby decided to act like a “goofy teenager” today and tore her CCL. I’m literally on my 7th hour after the accident, watching over her after coming back from the emergency vet. I was so worried until I read over the handouts and thank God for Dr. Jones and other similar vet videos that help us pet owners deal with ACL situations. Bless up! ♥️♥️♥️
Hi Dr. Jones, I enjoyed watching your video. I recently took my 47lb bassett hound to the vet as about a week ago she was holding her left hind leg up and wouldn't stand on it. About 5 days later, she started walking normally with an occasional limp. I was advised by vet that the only real option is surgery. She is 12 years old and I'm concerned about her undergoing anesthesia, etc. I'm aware that preliminary testing will be performed, but am still a little uneasy about it. I started doing some research on my own and came across your video which provided a little more insight into cruciate injuries. Thank you.
I was not told by vet if she had a partial or complete rupture though. Currently, and for the past week she has been walking on all fours and very energetic, although I've been restricting her activity as you recommend.
My purebred siberian husky(pictured) has torn his acl as diagnosed by the veterinarian today. I now begin the 8 week program as described in this video as well with the vets recommendations. I was not "pressed" by the vet for surgery but is a possibility after 8 to 10 weeks of home therapy. I shall leave no stone unturned in my quest for self healing with simple at home procedures. I was told the acl surgery will cost $2,500 to $4,000 dollars.
Thank you my shih tzu is being xrayed next week the vet only.gave option of surgery nothing else. Now I know about conservative pain management and physiotherapy and braces I will be asking far more question.
@@Bobthrbuilder111 she is allergic to all poultry and beef so we feed a grain free fish based diet. She is having laser therapy and hydrotherapy treatments, surgery was deemed last ditch option as we discovered she is also allergic to the anti inflammatory meds they have tried. Hope your dog is ok, we are giving hemp oil and glucosamine chondroitin too.
Awesome video! Thanks Dr. Jones :) I just got my dog a brace from woundwear that has been working great and along with this info I hope she will be fully healed soon. :)
This video has been helpful. I have a lab/boxer/German shepherd mix of 4 years old and her back right acl/ccl has been acting up. Our vet gave her gabapentin and rymidal but I will try your ideas and advice thank you
Thanks for the information. My 9 y/o 70+ lb Aussie has two ruptured Acls. Left leg is half a year old that healed partially, enough that he can atleast support himself and get up with some effort and some heart. The right knee is recent, a week old. I think my only option at this point is Tplo on his right, a brace on his left for atleast 6 months. Hopefully at that point both are healed up. I'm hoping the left doesn't need surgery.
CaVaLaKz My 2 year old Aussie just had his CCL repaired today. He has previously already had 3 knee surgeries in 1 year to repair Luxating Patellas on both knees. His first surgery was on left knee last July (actually exactly 1 year ago today) and then surgery on his right knee 6 months later at the beginning of this year. But, it began reluxating in May, so we had to do a second surgery in June, and then 2 weeks post-op he fell and tore his Cruciate Ligament and meniscus. So, we had to do a 4th surgery today to repair that. This is exhausting and I can't keep him still in his kennel. I'm so afraid he is going to re-injure himself this time around! Have you had success with your Aussie?
Thanks for all of your info. What is your opinion on home-use Low-Level (cold) laser treatments in general and for helping with cruciate ligament rupture recovery?
Our 11 year old Lhasa/Shih Tzu is 18 lbs and was just diagnosed with a CCL tear. She does not seem to be in a great deal of pain but is definitely favoring her leg. My issue is she was also just diagnosed with IVDD after she had an episode of unexplained pain that lasted about 2 weeks a couple of months ago. I worry about how she'll recover from surgery and how much high quality life we are buying with the surgery when you combine her age and the IVDD diagnoses. She was miserable when the IVDD flared up in contrast to this CCL tear which aside from her limp hasn't really affected her mood. Such a tough decision to make.
I’m so glad I came across this. I scheduled surgery next week I’m going to cancel. So sad for my dog he cries in pain even with medicine but I rather him heal than do surgery. I have stairs at my apartments so that’s the only thing that I feel like it’s makin it worse.
My dog is about 40lbs, active. She hurt her knee, acl. I was able to assess her knee and restricted her activity. Her knee was not that bad, very minor click, but couldn’t really move the knee, sliding it back and forth. However, I took her to the vet, they sedated her to get X-rays. When I got her back her knee was sliding and clicking. The vet was very rough with her and destroyed her knee. I could’ve saved her had I just continued to follow this procedure
Veterinary Secrets my dog blew out both acl's in minutes.... will leg braces help stabilize her legs and help with scar tissue growth in the proper location?
@@janicerogers1431, I know this is an older post but can I ask what you did to heal your dogs knees? Ive had surgery on multiple dogs and they were never the same. One even got MRSA. They were done by highly recommended ortho surgeons. My Beardie just blew out his CCL and I do not want surgery again. Thanks in advance.
@@junehutchinson3658 I chose to go the conservative route for my boy because of his age. I also bought him a supplement to rebuild his muscles. He was doing pretty well but sadly blew his other knee out. He is on rest and pain meds but it is much harder on him this time because his other knee had not full regained strength. I ordered two basic knee braces but they did not help much. I'm taking him for laser treatments but not seen any improvement yet. I am considering a lateral suture repair if it doesnt heal. I truly do not want to put him through surgery at his age. It's so sad as he was my agility partner.

My dog, a Labradane 98 pounds, 6years old had an acl injury last year and healed 80% …3days ago got it on the other leg. We are looking at getting the TPLO surgery
This is a great,i mportant video. My wonderful labrador had an injured cruciate ligament...and I agonized over what to do to help him. I want to say that I viewed this video, and after seeking opinions from my vet and others, everyone said surgery was the only way. The cost was a concern-but even more of a concern, the fact that results could not be guaranteed, and re-injury was even more likely after surgery, or during the recovery process. I followed my heart, and followed the guidelines of having my dog COMPLETELY avoid stairs, and jumping up on anything..feeling I would never know for sure if he could heal without surgery if I did not try what Dr. Jones suggested. I felt that there was really nothing to lose by trying natural healing restricting his movement, since he would be just as restricted if not MORE after surgery. I bought a gate, closed off the stairs to my upstairs bedroom, bought an air mattress, and my dog and I slept downstairs together for almost two months. I felt it was very important for us to be together to support his healing, especially as we always normally slept together. It was very difficult, as we were not nearly as comfortable as we would have been in our "real" bed. After that, I used a sling, and helped him up, and only allowed the one trip up stairs for bed,and continued to restrict him from any running, but we began to take gentle walks. After the first month passed, whenever I could spring for a warm water swim session at a canine therapy center, I did. I could not afford the therapist, but brought a friend that my dog was very close to, and we assisted him with his swims. After these two months went by, he was doing much better... and after three months, it was difficult to detect any evidence of a problem. I found it to be truly miraculous that he could heel so much and so well...and was very glad that I did not put him through the surgery, and that I found this video which inspired me to take the actions I did.
My 80 pound almost 10 year old Silver Tip Lab ruptured his left CCL completely in October of 2017. He also has a degenerative Right hip and left hip was suspect. He could not walk on it for about two days. We totally decrease his activity to just going outside to go to the bathroom for 1 week. Than increase slightly over the next 3-4 weeks We increased his fish oil to 2 teaspoons per day along with putting him on Dasuquin with MSM daily. We added two more supplements from Young Living, Sulferzyme with wolf berry and a product call BLM, for bone, ligament, and muscle. Approximately 3-4 months later he was walking much more normally and within 6 months of his injury he now jumps up on his favorite sofa. You can heal your dog without surgery. BTW that surgery cost in Southern CA is 5K. Thanks Dr Jones.
@VeterinarySecrets thank you so much for sharing your gifts and expertise with us! Quick question, can Absorbine Vet Liniment be used on dogs, and if so does the area need to be wrapped after?
Hello My dog was diagnosed with Luxating Patellas in both knees with osteoarthritis already set in. Stage 2 in one stage 3 in other. Vet seemed to think we could manage without surgery right now. We were given Dasuquin Advanced along with Vellepet supplements (cannabias?sp) Henry is 7. Also just did 6 sessions of laser therapy. Also working on weight loss. Eight more pounds to go to get to he’s ideal weight. Well he does get up on his own now. But now has started limping. Vet seems to think it might be a partial tear. Ugh! So he gave us two options, referred us to orthopedic specialist or try a brace . Recommended GoHeroGo for brace. Frustrating he really didn’t guide us to which way to go. With arthritis already set in we are leaning towards a brace. The brace is 800 plus the vet would make the cast and have to sedate him doing this ( don’t know why) so probably 1500 all said and done. What I don’t understand is he says to still take him for short walks but I’m reading other articles is to rest him. I’m so confused! So if I may ask, if the arthritis is already in the knees what are the odds a surgery will be successful? Plus having the other knee in bad shape too.. Thanks so much for your time
My 2 year old chocolate lab mix was running the other day and just started screaming. We took him to the vet, no breaks. Sent home with two weeks observation and anti-inflammatory medication. Five days right now, and still no improvement or a concrete diagnosis.

My lovely chihuahuamix lady has a cruciate ligament tear (complete) on sept 2023 she couldn't even walk because she had fallen. I went to 3 surgeons, but just one of these told me about the alternative way. So i decided to go alternative way, because i can make the surgery later too. I do feed them Barf and organic, so my dogs are taking lots of supplements too, but just healthy ones . And for that she's getting green-lipped mussels, collagen, chondroitin, rosehips organic, curcuma org., vit d3 org., cod liver oil and herb mix especially for dog joints besides to all these things you need for the food too like beef bone meal, algea like spirulina, chlorella, dulse, etc......and physiotherapy and some other treatments like unterwater treadmill she can't do anymore, because she got a cold, even though I blow-dried her fur. But we are doing some other treatments, too. Like red led light, laser, some exercices every day before feeding and outside too. I had to carry her the first 3months almost the whole time and then most of the time😊 and now she walks a little more and more. But she is so wild and willing to play wild freaky gangster game between my dogs (so i call their game😂) i've to take care still 24/7 because she jumps already on and from the dog couch and runs the stairs to our bed up and down. She's a little crazy as chihuahuas used to be. They are so brave and funny in a crazy way. But i love them so much, and i love their crazieness. But to take care of her is not as easy as it seems to be. You really need to oberserve your dog if she/he is not sleeping or at least with you lying in the bed. Please never forget that. I'm so happy i've found all these vetenarian willing to learn about the alternative way too. It took me years! And lots of money. And they take 3 times more than i should cost. We can download the normal price list at the austrian University for veternian medical professionals. Thank good i've met this orthopedic surgeon and pet rescue lady from the Vanivenhaus here in austria. She's about 40 minutes away from my house. But i would drive even longer to get to such a nice vetenarian. And thank you so much for all of yuor videos❤❤❤
So glad I found this video. My dog was scheduled next month for a TPLO with a $4,000 bill. I've postponed the procedure and will follow up on some of your suggestions. If no success and still have to do the surgery I can still put the orthopedic brace to therapy use.
Hi Dr. Jones, My puppy just turned one year old in January and she is Cattle dog mix. She is very active and social. She started limping her left leg last month but we didn’t know what happened until the vet told us that she has torn ligaments and arthritis starts building up. They recommended us for surgery and the cost will be around 4500. At the very young age, should we do a surgery for her? Can you give me some advices please? I am stressed and don’t know what I should do to help my puppy getting better.
Dr. Jones, Our 12 year old yellow lab jumped off the groomers table and injured her left front leg. The joint between her paw and elbow has been extremely swollen and bruised and she cannot put any weight on it! We took her to our vet - had x-rays and blood work done and the examination revealed no broken bones and the blood work came back as “normal”. The vet prescribed an anti-inflammatory for 7 days - after which there was no change. We brought her back for more x-rays and blood work to be told that everything looks the same and the vet prescribed more anti-inflammatories! After another week, there was still no change. We inquired as to why the limb was not wrapped or supported and the vet indicated that it could be an infection in the joint and wrapping it could cause more harm. At this point the vet prescribed antibiotics - which we have been administering for three days now with no change. The vet indicated that if there is no change within two weeks to stop the meds and bring our dog back for more tests - for possible bone cancer! Our dog is still limping and the swelling and bruising remain!!! With the information provided, can you please advise as to whether or not our dog’s limb should have been supported? Can you please help?! Thank you. Michelle
Hi Michelle- sounds like a serious sprain of the carpus. Generally its time, symptomatic anti-inflammatories. They can also consider some type of splint - talk to your vet again. www.orthovet.com/product/orthovet-carpal-splint/
My Westie had same issue ,Vet want me to pay 12k for the surgery i told him we can’t afford to pay that ,we change the food to omega 3 food, let him lose weight and some light activities ,now my dog is seems ok .12k for the surgery is a rip off
If your dog has a bad reaction to usually, the rabies vaccine-- say, if there is a big lump at the vaccination site, be really careful with your dog for the next week because this is when bad injuries can happen from the inflammation caused by the vaccine. What until the bump goes away before letting your dog rage off leash again! I had tendons rupture like crazy on me from recombinant Hep B vaccine (rabies is also recombinant i.e. gmo) and I have seen it happen badly to a golden retreiver from rabies. Thuja is a homepathic treatment for vaccinosis. MSM or DMSO also slap down cytokine storms, but I don't have experience using these with dogs.
Hi. Great video and thanks for what you"re doing. My 6 year old pup has a tear in his left rear ccl(diagnosed by my vet) Told me TPLO surgery is a must. I got the money but lord does it sound invasive. I worry about complications down the line when those bones weaken with age. I would like to try conservative treatment and am wondering about braces. I was wondering if you had an opinion on the Caerus Stifle Brace. A rigid brace seems like the way to go to me but please correct me if I'm wrong.
My dog tore her left ACL and I restricted exercise for 2 months, supplemented with green lipped mussel extract, fish oil and arnica and that healed nicely then she escaped with her daughter one day and tore her right acl, this time a bit worse. My lovely mil called the SPCA on me because apparently it was a welfare issue because I wasn't giving her pain relief or getting her surgery, now the SPCA is threatening to take my dog unless I book her surgery before the end of the week, 2 weeks ago they took her to their vet who diagnosed her and said the only option is surgery and I must give her pain relief tablets everyday or I can be charged with a criminal offence and they will take her and I will have a mark against my name - I have restricted her exercise, brought her another brace for her new torn knee and started again on the suppliements, as well as natural pain relief, I have not been giving the pain relief tablets they prescribed even though I will get in trouble if they find out, they told me I can give her the tablets everyday for years before I will damage her liver, Is that correct? I don't believe it? Anyway they came round today and she said herself that "Bailey ( my dog ) looks much better today, shes not limping but that's because the pain relief has kicked in" little does she know that she hasn't had any pain relief for 2 days and the natural suppliements are working ( when they said they wouldn't ) but if I told her that they would take Bailey and I would get arrested. So much for the welfare of the animal, when Im trying to do the best by her and they are threatening to take her for me. Are they correct? Should I be giving the pain relief tablets? I am getting her surgery because I have no other option but I'm angry they are forcing it on me without trying the natural way, obviously I would get her the surgery if natural doesn't work, she's only just tore it 3 weeks ago. I'm so angry. you were the only person I could think of that I could ask your honest opinion?
Thank you for the video. My 80 lbs Golden partially tore his CCL. He hasn't been baring any weight and only using 3 legs. I only take him out to potty and he's in his crate all day. I have the ortho dog brace, but I'm only on week 4 of no exercise. when should I start using the brace? He's lost a lot of muscle in his injured leg. feeling rather helpless and that he might tear the other knee due to over use!
Hi Dr Jones,Sorry to bother you again. Our dog, Boss, broke through a gate when we were not at home and ran into our back yard, ran around, and is limping much worse now. He already had a little limp but we hoped a couple months resting quietly and maybe he'd be ok.We are guessing at this point he needs surgery. He's a 3 year old 115 lb active lab-pit mix, and maybe the world's sweetest dog. We rescued him a year ago.So now we are hearing about TPLO or TTA.We are being quoted about $4400 for TPLO.We are waiting for a quote for TTA but understand it is quite a bit cheaper....maybe about half the cost of TPLO. Are they equally as good ?In one year, this is the 3rd acl surgery we will have done, but the first two were small dogs and only about $1400 each. (Yorkie and old lady hound dog). We have 6 dogs and they are crushing our budget this year.Any ideas ? Suggestions ?Thanks so much for all you do !Scott n Lidia
Hi Charles- 1st you are correct surgery is needed for such a big guy. Second though the procedure isn't as impt as the skill/experience of the surgeon. TPLO seems to be far better, but that requires an experienced surgeon. I did surgery on many a large dog's ACL injury using less invasive technique lateral stabilization.
@@nph_fit Boss had tplo surgery in 1 back leg and tta surgery on the other. He is a large 125 lb Cane Corso -Lab mix. Except for getting old, 9 in March, he runs well.
One of my dogs had surgery on the 4th of December. I wish I had seen this before but my vet rushed me in. He said it is essential to get surgery within a fortnight to lessen the affects of arthritis. She is on leash walks, physio and crate rest for 3 months. People keep telling me she will probably do her other leg within two years. Do you think I should be looking at getting a brace for her good leg when she starts going out again. She is a large dog and loves to run.
I'd like to try a brace for my British Bulldog, but Orthodog doesn't fit bulldogs, according to their website. I'd like to consider Wound Wear's A-TraC brace, but the website given is odd, as it mentions nothing about braces, but talks of God, philosophy, 2 and 3 dimensional worlds and mostly just rambles on in a inapprehensible manner. The phone number also doesn't work. Is there an updated way to contact Wound Wear or has the company/owner suffered some mental breakdown?
Hello Dr. Thank you for your fantastic video it is so helpful. Our 10yr old lab will be having surgery on his acl this week. We are planning his rehab and looking at getting a dual brace. Unfortunately Iin Australia we cannot get the ortho brace. I am reaching out for advice on choosing an alternative system. We cab get Balto dual jump, or Furtent or Lispoo on Amazon. Hoping you can help. Nicole
Thanks for your kind words! 😊 You’re on the right track with planning your Lab’s rehab-ACL surgery recovery is so important. While I haven’t used those specific braces, I've heard good things about the Balto dual jump brace for support. It’s lightweight and designed for ACL injuries, which might suit your Lab well! Just make sure it’s snug and comfy without restricting movement too much. Wishing your pup a speedy recovery! - Dr. Andrew
Sir my dog got slipped while jumping and now he is standing like boxer in the thumbnail. What to do sir its so aggressive towards vet so plz tell me solution I'm eagerly waiting for your reply 🙏 🙏 🙏
I saw your question and I have a dog that needs help with a torn ACL and is on the same carprofen medicine and worry about him being on that long-term let me know if you find out a good answer
Doctor, Is there anything I can do for my dog who has a bum hip? She was hurt when a larger dog stepped on her lower back. Thanks. I enjoy watching your videos.
My dog is a corgi mix and we just found out that he has torn ACL and that surgery was needed. We said we couldn’t afford it and we have no insurance and my dog didn’t show any signs of hurting. He limps sometimes and we told doctor last year and they said it was arthritis. Now we got X-rays because he was limping more and more and they confirmed it. We can’t afford surgery but they said we could try water therapy and other options. We are getting him a brace. My dog is active and loves running and playing he is like a puppy. Thanks for this video I am going to make sure he doesn’t go on long walks or he is not outside out of his Leash. Any other options or what We should do please let me know. We are just worried he will do it to the other leg too.
Any Update on how your dog's doing, please? Update on my comment 4/21: I was worried about my dog, because sometimes there was some limping. I switched to BARFing her and Feed her some Glucosamine. She is completely fine, now! I think it was a nutricion problem.
If has been 3 months and my dog is walking better but still only a drop of muscle has returned and his paw is tilted on injured side. Would it still be beneficial to get a brace. He walks but his paw is tilted one way as to not put full pressure on the injured area. Would a brace help correct at this point??? I suspect there is some scar tissue but not fully done yet and woukd like to correct the inconsistent positioning while walking. Any advice on a brace at this point Doctor???
Hi Doc - very appreciative of your videos. You helped me heal my dogs acute colitis when he was a puppy from another video. My 11 month old husky/pit mix who is 48 lbs was carrying his rear leg, and was found to have ruptured his “tarsal medial collateral ligament” in his hock joint... the vet said he will need surgery as he thinks it is completely torn based off X-ray and exam. We are following up with an ortho surgeon vet but I am sure he will recommend surgery as it is his specialty. All the information I’m finding online is related to knee injuries and not the hock joint. From an outside perspective do you think the same non-surgical approach can be applied to this injury as well?
It can, but it takes a long time to form adequate scar tissue. You can get a walking splint which supports the hock- I had a few clients who found this eventually worked
@@VeterinarySecrets My poodle was recently injured with severe cruciate tear and also has hip problems in opposite leg. She is 12 almost 13 and surgery is not an option so I am keeping her from running, jumping, climbing, etc. a lot of rest, I carry her out to potty, etc. very limited movements, I am also doing some low impact balance exercises on her where I lift each leg alternating, just a little to help her balance on opposite leg. I want to get her healed, she is my baby. She is also getting galliprant and flexidin daily. Am I doing the right things to help her recover? I know it is going to take a long time but I am patient. Hi Dr Jones My dog Bichon Male 11yrs old, 8.1kg. He tore ccl on he rear left leg in 2 weeks ago with full tear. We scheduled an appointment June 29. Please advise if he can recovery himself with the knee brace. It’s necessary need to do the surgery. Thank you very much🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
8 weeks rest- does the dog have to be crated ? Can we just keep him inside ? We have steps for him to get into our bed...stairs ok or should the mattress be on the floor ? Boss is a 3 year old 115 lb chocolate lab mix. He is walking gingerly on his back right leg. Vet says it is a partial acl tear. Over $3000 for surgery. Holy cow. We've kept him inside for a week but have not seen any difference so far. We also have 5 other dogs in the house. Thank you so much for all you do ! Great video !
I am so thankful that I found you! I am from Denmark, but I hope it doesn't matter. I have 3 lovely dogs at home, and they mean the world to me, but my oldest dog (he is almost 12 years old) got his right hind leg ligament torn. He is a small dog (breed: Bichon Havanais) and he is really a strong and healthy dog. Is it safe for us to use your advices for my lovely dog? Or what to do? Hope you will answer asap!! thank you!
What do you recommend for arthritis as far as medication? My English Bulldog is 8 and she has arthritis in all four legs according to the vet. It comes and goes, sometimes she walks fine, it acts up every so often. Any suggestions?
Hello Dr. Jones thank you so much for the video. I know you’re busy but I’m really hoping you could help me out. So we have a 39 lbs male Pembroke Welsh Corgi and back in March 18, 2019 he jumped down from the 4th step of the stairs and started limping and brought him to the vet the next day and since we couldn’t afford to get him an xray at that time the vet was sure that his right back leg the ccl was torn and suggested 6 week rest and his leg actually almost completely healed and back to normal but then 2 days ago he accidentally got out of the house to the backyard and started running around like crazy and my family and I knew we had to stop him from running and next thing we know his other leg his left leg gave in. I just saw him fall and stop and lifting his left leg trying to walk. So I bring him to a new vet the next day and they did an x ray on both legs and his left leg ccl is completely torn and his right is okay. And the vets suggested surgery asap. And im seeing a lot of people not doing the surgery. So what i wanted to ask you Dr. should we do the surgery? My corgi is only 2 yrs 7 months old and he’s overweight. Or should I just try if his legs would heal naturally? Please help! Thank you in advance!
Likely in this case I would have you consider surgery- the one leg is already compromised, so he could further damage it while this one heals. If not consider a brace- this is a good company: www.poshdogkneebrace.com/
Hi, our baby boy is 3, Rottweiler malamute mix and weighs 55kg (120 lbs) he just tore the ligament in his hind leg. We have given metacam, starting glucosamine and trying our best to get a little weight off him at our vets advise. Anything else we could be doing? We can’t afford the surgery, insurance wasn’t an option because he’s been such a problem child from the moment we got him with so many health issues that the monthly premiums were ridiculous. He was such an active pup we used to do daily 5k trail walks with him and now he just gets around the block, is around the block even too much ?
Dr. Jones, and advice on a severe cruciate ligament tear on a 5 month old French bulldog? xray and vet diagnosed. extremely active and healthy and showed no signs until yesterday when it happened. 2 and a half year old grandson was playing with her and they were only out of my sight for 2 minutes while I prepared my frenchies breakfast.
Hi J Eller, What did you end up doing with your frenchie's healing? Did you opt for surgery? How is your frenchie doing now? I am in the similar situation with my 2 year old frenchie.
I have a 2yr old Rotty he is 55kg, he tore his cruciate and needs surgery which costs €2000, i wasn’t given any other option this is the first time iv heard about the brace.he has good days and bad, there are days where he’d be playing around the next day he’s not great again.
hello sir how are you i have a JSD dog 6 montha has a problem with the ligament of the RIGHT leg behind it, if there is any medicine or exercise please tell
I found out today that my 16kg collie has ruptured her crucifer ligament and I was told she needs surgery to fix this. I was also told that if I didn’t have the surgery she may heal but she will suffer from arthritis and discomfort for the rest of her life. She is only 8 years old and up until now was a very active and dog. She spends all day lying in her bed which is good but I just don’t know what to do. I have said I will give it a good few weeks for her to recover a bit and see how she is but I am not sure if I should book her in for surgery or not. What do you think? Will she suffer in the long run like my vet said if I don’t do the surgery? 😢
Claire Page I really hope your friend was not put through surgery , it is such an extreme physical violation and can lose their life on the operating table , hope they are well now

Hello Dr. Jones! Love your videos!! I now have 3 dogs, (the 3rd recently happened) that have ACL issues, all different breeds (Bullmastiff, Rotti, American Bully), they aren't serious tears, only flare with excessive playing (except for the Rotti), but I don't want them to get any worse, so I've got leg braces ordered, and I am getting a TENS unit to use electro-stimulation as well. ...what is your opinion of the TENS and would you consider making a video of proper electrode placement, etc. ??
I loved your thorough explanation of EVERYTHING. Thank you so much Doctor! Also, is there any topical cream that's okay to massage the dogs leg with?! I have some cbd/thc cream for me I was wondering if I can use it on him?
Vet said my cockerpoo has partial ligament tear.he suggested surgery and is against brace. He also suggested hydro pool. I'm asking does she need hydro pool were she is on an underwater tread mill? As I wanting to heal with out surgery which I think is invasive
My white shepherd was missing for 6 days...she was located today...her back right leg is SO swollen...DEF broken!!! I cant afford a vet bill to even find out what it is....what do i do?? 😰😰😰 i gave her ptmroper gabbupentin, and Ibuprofen for inflammation. Today is the 1st day shes home. I cannot go NEAR that leg. Shes in a kennel...in pain...swollen...shes 2 and a half years old, and weighs 60 pounds! Her leg is limp and superrrrr swollen. Guessing femur bone? I dont know. Can you shed advice on what to do?.....
Jennifer David I would definitely advise against giving your dog ibuprofen! I thought giving your dog small doses of ibuprofen was okay, but I took my fur baby to the vet today because he was in a lot of pain. The vet told me to stop giving ibuprofen IMMEDIATELY. It causes permanent liver and kidney damage. I’d definitely look for a different anti-inflammatory/pain management medication. For your pups issue, since the vet is not an option, I recommend trying to stabilize it if at all possible and restrict her activities for at least 8 weeks.
Thank you. She had 2 scans...NASTY break...amputation is NOT an option for me...nor is surgery bc its so high!!! 😭😭😭 reccomendations on wrapping her leg for healing? Any thing helps...i cant ty enough!! Shes been in thr kennel for a week...wrapped and splinted. I gave her the anitbiotics and Gabbs the vet sent me home with. And i think the ibuprofin gave her Diarreah! 😰😰😰😰 so we stopped that ASAP!! i just dont know what to do......😭😭😭😭
Hi had my dog x-rayed and confirmed had a torn ACL can't afford surgery have it on pain meds but once to get a brace to help him recover he's a 70 lb mix between pit Kita and boxer love my dog and want the best care but can't afford surgery he's an inside dog and I'm trying to keep him from being very active any suggestions on whether or not I should continue him on pain meds I worry about his liver and kidneys
Hi - it is more difficult on a big dog. They can be healed, but it takes longer, and bracing/etc dose not always work. Physio after is very important ( ie swimming, range of motion exercises)
Thank you so much for both options as I will NOT go to vets anymore , I do not trust them because they are basically owned by the Pharmaceutical industry
that's where I am at too. I also now make my dogs food - olive oil, steamed sweet potatoes, chick peas, shredded carrots and celery with raw chicken on top. Do you feed your dog vegan? I am vegan also.
Hi Dr. Jones first of all... I am so glad I found your channel. Your information has been very helpful. I have a 13 year old Yorkie/Maltese mix. He suddenly started limping one day and I took him to the vet. The vet said he had torn his right back behind like CCL. He recommended surgery. my dogs always had bad knees and his front legs tend to bow right now. I don't want to put him through surgery so I was wondering if a brace would benefit not only his torn CCL but help the rest of his legs? I had seen a brace called my pet brace. I know this is custom fitted. I wondered if you had any thoughts on this brace? Also I had seen a supplement called TRF 150.some people said they used it for their dogs and it helped them recover mobility. Do you have any thoughts on this? Or recommendations for supplements that would help my dog. I currently give him NaturVet vital pet senior plus glucosamine.
Hi Lavina. Personally with such a small dog I would avoid surgery/braces. Supplement with a good quality supplement ( ie www.thedogsupplement.com/advanced), anti-inflammatories as needed, 95% curcumin, topical DMSO or topical Castor oil, consider CBD, massage. Start hydrotherapy by swimming in the bath twice daily if you can.
@@VeterinarySecrets Dr. Jones you don't know how much I appreciate you responding to my question. THANK YOU..I would like to ask why you think that I should avoid ba brace. Right now he has started trying to walk but is using his injured leg gingerly. When he does use it, it tends to shake. I had started giving him Naturvet joint health supplement which has glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin as well as some boswellia in addition to a few other things. I also started rubbing some frankincense oil mixed with coconut oil on him. Do you think that supplement is good enough or should I switch supplements? I have no problem buying your supplement. And also if you could elaborate on why you think a brace is not a good idea for him? He is an extremely active dog and still tries to run and jump on my furniture. I've been trying to keep him in a room and trying to avoid him climbing up and down or jumping on things to get him to heal.

Dear Dr. Jones,
after owning 4 Rottweilers in 30 years, I had surgery performed on 3 cruciate ligaments.
Thanks for sharing Alena

Curcumin works wonders! Glad she's doing great. Thanks for sharing your story.

@@dianearvizu8349 wondering the same if prolotherapy is a good option?
My dog is getting acupuncture and cold laser therapy. Two veterinarians have told us the inflammation damaged his joints and will not be able to walk. It is heart breaking. Will prolotherapy help? It happened so fast and he has walked his whole life.
I followed your advice Doc, over 2 years later and my girl is still doing fine. Thank you.
Hi what breed was your dog?
@@williamhiggins1252 A Beagle mix. My sister's dog is an American Staffordshire.
I do hope your dog feels better and that you got him to the vet to at least diagnose the problem properly.
did wrapping with an ace bandage help??
We used Ortho braces twice, she ruptured both ligaments (not at the same time). The braces work! Our dog is now 16 years old.

Thank you so much you have helped so many times with my best friend he is now 15 years of age , just wanted to say thank you

Thanks Isabelle- so good to know!
My vet instructed the same for my girl. Just curious swooping through anything else I can do. She loves running and herding so this is torture for her now. She's stuck inside away from all the other dogs just in case she tries to play with them.
Let me know in a year if you are still glad you skipped surgery.

Hi Isabelle how is your dog now xx
Thank you again,

You are welcome- hope you get a diagnosis
How is it going this jusy happened to my husky yesterday!!
Hello ... sorry to hear about your puppy.

I watched your info on supplements during injuries and WOW they are helping so much. Thank you!

I am amazed how many people want free advice from this kind , compassionate Vet. Something for nothing, you can rationalize however you want too.
Bless up! ♥️♥️♥️
Hi Dr. Jones,
I enjoyed watching your video.
Hi Sarah,
I tend to agree with your choice- If I had a 12yo with ACL injury, I would opt for conservative treatment
Hi Chris,
The one thing is that if it is completly torn, then sugery is the best option- ask your vet about the degree of injury.
Dr J
Thank you my shih tzu is being xrayed next week the vet only.gave option of surgery nothing else. Now I know about conservative pain management and physiotherapy and braces I will be asking far more question.
My yorkie as well. The vet is recommending pain management. Also look into feed her or him cooked organs for vitamin and bone broth.

That beautiful black lab is so chill.
Yup

Did this work for you? Or did you have to go ahead with a surgery?

My dog is about 40lbs, active. She hurt her knee, acl. I was able to assess her knee and restricted her activity. Her knee was not that bad, very minor click, but couldn’t really move the knee, sliding it back and forth. However, I took her to the vet, they sedated her to get X-rays. When I got her back her knee was sliding and clicking. The vet was very rough with her and destroyed her knee. I could’ve saved her had I just continued to follow this procedure

My dog, a Labradane 98 pounds, 6years old had an acl injury last year and healed 80% …3days ago got it on the other leg. We are looking at getting the TPLO surgery
Any updates? How did you go about healing the first injury? Did you end up getting surgery for the second leg?
Thanks for sharing
Any updates on how things are going now?

Hello
My dog was diagnosed with Luxating Patellas in both knees with osteoarthritis already set in.

Why do vets have to be so expensive. I understand we need to make money, but is it not a little excessive?
@@anon4041 they know you're emotionally invested in your pet and can charge almost anything they want. That's the truth. Not that they don't deserve great pay, but it's definitely over the top. I have taken my dog in for 5 minutes and paid a hundred dollars for info I could've found online.

Hi Dr. Jones,
My puppy just turned one year old in January and she is Cattle dog mix. She is very active and social. She started limping her left leg last month but we didn’t know what happened until the vet told us that she has torn ligaments and arthritis starts building up. They recommended us for surgery and the cost will be around 4500. At the very young age, should we do a surgery for her? Can you give me some advices please?

Dr. Jones,
Our 12 year old yellow lab jumped off the groomers table and injured her left front leg.
Thank you.

Hi Charles- 1st you are correct surgery is needed for such a big guy. Second though the procedure isn't as impt as the skill/experience of the surgeon. One of my dogs had surgery on the 4th of December. I wish I had seen this before but my vet rushed me in. He said it is essential to get surgery within a fortnight to lessen the affects of arthritis. Can I use an ace bandage temporarily to stabilize the leg, and if so, how should I do that? Thank you for any

Hi Sandra- use some of the same remedies for arthritis. Here: ua-cam.com/video/ao7I5FVMFKE/v-deo.html, ua-cam.com/video/k51LzmRGDh4/v-deo.html

My poodle was recently injured with severe cruciate tear and also has hip problems in opposite leg. Please all advice is appreciated.

Hi Dr Jones
My dog Bichon Male 11yrs old, 8.1kg.
Yes you can just keep inside, walk outside on a leash. Avoid stairs. Takes approx 4 weeks before scar tissue starts to build and stabilize knee
Hope you will answer asap!! thank you!
Hi,
You can use these suggestions safely with your dog- feel free to consult your local veterinarian as well
Dr. Is there a good brace to help prevent a tear. My bo6 has a strain and I’m afraid he’s gonna tear it he runs so fast.
I got the Balto Jump Brace from Alpha Mobility. She’s been using that leg more when the brace is on.
He's such a good boy!!! Gotta acknowledge your model dog!!
Thanks
He looks like junk, and its not funny
Hi J Eller,
What did you end up doing with your frenchie's healing? Did you opt for surgery? How is your frenchie doing now? I am in the similar situation with my 2 year old frenchie.
Thank you for the information
I clicked on this video solely for the boxer on the thumbnail.. I feel cheated.
Thanks Andrew much appreciated, very helpful
Welcome
I have a 2yr old Rotty he is 55kg, he tore his cruciate and needs surgery which costs €2000, i wasn’t given any other option this is the first time iv heard about the brace.he has good days and bad, there are days where he’d be playing around the next day he’s not great again.
hello sir how are you i have a JSD dog 6 montha has a problem with the ligament of the RIGHT leg behind it, if there is any medicine or exercise please tell
I can’t find wound wear website. Please send me the link. I need braces for my dog ASAP. I appreciate you very much!
This happened to my dog and I was told the exact same thing. What did you end up doing? How is your collie?
Claire Page I really hope your friend was not put through surgery , it is such an extreme physical violation and can lose their life on the operating table , hope they are well now
Hi Doctor. Is Arnica cream safe for cat arthritis on joint? Arnica cream does not have alcohol. Arnica gel has alcohol. Please help me. My cat has joint pain arthritis. I know Arnica is good humans but not sure if Arnica cream is safe for cats ? The brand of this cream Boiron
Please watch this arthritis video specifically for cats: ua-cam.com/video/zrtnHS2X_Co/v-deo.html
Hello Dr. ??
Hi, I have not used the TENS, but similar devices. Very well may speed healing. Will consider it.
HI Heather...what brace did you order. I have a 90lb bully with a possible ACL tear. I was quoted $6k for surgery.
I loved your thorough explanation of EVERYTHING. Thank you so much Doctor! Also, is there any topical cream that's okay to massage the dogs leg with?! I have some cbd/thc cream for me I was wondering if I can use it on him?
Do you have any feedback on a go to hero brace or my pet brace?
Why isn't it standard procedure to fit the dog with a brace? Dog just diag. with this injury by my vet and not understanding why he didn't wrap it up?
Yes do not give ibuprofen to a dog. Second get a vet exam and X-ray to determine what is going on
