I bought a watersnake today to do this on a 3 Waters Big Fish 120. The slot to fit the motor through is a perfect fit, but I never thought of the prop being sideways would stop it from coming up in shallow water. Now I do after watching this, Cheers.
Glad to share it! I've had the motor for over a year and was frustrated with grass in the prop. This makes things so much easier and faster. Took me a while to think of it but it's so simple.
All info I saw online says the trolling motor should be 12" below the water line. Your looks to be higher up. Had you tried lowering it and whether it made any difference?
That may be true of motors installed in the front or back, but since this is midship I haven't had any problems with cavitation because of the cassette. I have installed it lower before, but I wasn't getting as much efficiency. Also, I probably wouldn't be able to use the ruler mod. If you Google pictures of the side profile of the Old Town 106 Minn kota, that motor is tucked pretty high up as well. Hope that helps..
I drilled two 1/4 inch holes at the bottom front/bottom back of the cassette to drain any water. I also tried using expanding spray foam, but it got messy and I had no patience. I recommend stuffing it with pool noodle foam after drilling holes and before installing the motor shaft. Stuff it into the 1 inch holes you make for the motor shaft.
I used something like this from Amazon: Neoprene Foam Strip Roll by Dualplex, 2" Wide x 10' Long x 1/4" Thick, Weather Seal High Density Stripping with Adhesive Backing - Weather Strip Roll Insulation Foam Strips a.co/d/8BJObbr It does well to minimize noise and vibration.
Amped Outdoors 60ah 12v ampedoutdoors.com/products/60ah-lithium-battery-lifepo4-series-capable I have never ran out using with a PWM. My friend who hooks it straight to his water snake motor has ran out once on a windy day about 7 miles of travel in about 7 hours of fishing. We made the same exact trip before on a less windy day without running out.
To prevent the motor from rotating, I used a light bar clamp and then used 2 screws on each side to pin the clamp in place onto the cassette a.co/d/71VGllu
I am using a Watersnake 24lb thrust trolling motor with the control head cut off. I capped the end with PVC couplers and a 1 inch rubber furniture foot peg cover. More details of the set up can be seen in my other video: ua-cam.com/video/nchKdMlIB_g/v-deo.html
@@JohnNguyen4 many thanks, John. I forgot to ask you one more thing. What is attached to your cassette? Looks like some of sponge at both ends but can't make it out exactly what it is. And where can I order it? I'm doing a very similar setup to your electric motor. Love your ruler mod too.

I'm going out to my shop now with ruler in hand. Thank you.
@@justroofing2631 glad I could help!
Thats a great idea that I will be adopting on to my hobie motor rig. That definitely helps solve a problem. Thank you for sharing!

John you have great ideas thinking outside the box👍
Thank you
Thanks, I was looking if the Motor of the venom 35lb had the same measurement of the 24lb and if it will it pass through the hole

Excellent prop fixer.

What type of foam did you use on the ends? What type of adhesive to attach it?
1/4 inch thick foam with adhesive backing from Amazon. There's multiple vendors. I have mine cut to 5x1.5 inch strips
Does the cassette need to be sealed? I’m assuming not- does it get water stuck inside it?

Which motor did you use , is it water snake venom
@@linofoscardi5144 water snake 24lb 12v with the two blade prop. The venom might be too big to fit through the drive hole, but I've never tried.
where did you buy the gray base
@@aprendiendoapescarcasar860 it came with the purchase of the kayak. Local kayak dealer or online, search Compass cassette plug
What did you use to glue those rubber pieces onto the cassette? I need to do this to mine.

what battery and size are you using? thanks for sharing the video

Brilliant 👍👍
Do you have a video on how you modified your Watersnake for the Hobie?
Try this video,

very similar to what I did except I got rid of the control head and connected it to a diy pwm.
@@JohnNguyen4 thanks John, I was interested in how you got rid of the head and how you added the pwm if you wouldn't mind sharing.
@@jimwoodmansee Hi James, I made another video that may help you on how I set up the motor. ua-cam.com/video/nchKdMlIB_g/v-deo.html
Thanks for your videos John. Looking to get a watersnake very soon
How do you lock it into one position?
To prevent the motor from rotating, I used a light bar clamp and then used 2 screws on each side to pin the clamp in place onto the cassette a.co/d/71VGllu
@JohnNguyen4 thank you so much. I'm starting this project next week.
The best idea.
Brilliant
👍❤️
Hi John. What is the motor head? It looks like you modified it. And where did you buy it? It looks very streamlined

@@goranbosalevski9772 it's just 1/4 inch thick foam with adhesive backing to prevent the cassette from wobbling in the drive hole during use
How much top speed ?
About 3.5mph with no wind on the Compass. The turbo fins are definitely faster, maybe 4.0-4.5
What motor is that?
Water snake 24lb thrust 12v. I purchased mine from Amazon.
