    I hope one day this kind of playing becomes relevant in pop music...my first thought is "I wish I could play stuff like this on a regular bar/club gig".
    Then again, guitarists are already tuned as low as "us", and if we compare a surge in bass - fronted music to what the 80's were for guitar playing, it could turn this instrument into a gymnastics competition, and it would take us decades to recover.

      ***** I will never stop being impressed by showboating,but it loses its charm after more than a minute because the showboat is the goal, not the music. Im listening to your music. It's dark and weird and sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. You may be my new favorite bass player! Stormy night is awesome, Descent into Death is gnarly too. Thought about getting your music into movies or doing composition for the same?

    About the 5th time I listened to this, still good :) I know it's probably mostly improvised, but I would really like to hear a complete arrangement of this piece.

      in as much as I had no idea what I was going to play til I hit the first chord, it's all improvised. The chord progression's pretty easy to replicate. It's a vibe I've messed about with a few times. We'll see what happens with it next :)

      Saw you at the London Bass Show in March (I flew over from Ireland especially for the Show) and also witnessed your performance at the Albion Pub After Show... Trying to find Vid Footage of the Performance you did with Jon Thorne. I'm not a Solo Bassist, I'm more of an "in the Pocket" kinda Player, but I do love Technical playing (though I'm not into the Mark King or Billy Sheehan ways of playing, I more prefer Scott Thunes (Zappa) or John Alderete (Racer X and The Mars Volta). I love playing some Zappa Pieces like Zombie Woof or anything by Jamerson.

    finally i got to hear the full and particular sound of a semihollow quantum, being a quantum fan , it is beeing a long time coming. I knew i should have ordered a semihollow Q5 wide while they still building basses, I blame the neverending vintage sound trend ,

    • @solobasssteve
      @solobasssteve 10 років тому +2

      Hi Claudio - I've got two semi-hollow moduluses - fretted and fretless 6s. This one is a one-of-a-kind as it has a carved top, and sounds a little different to any other modulus I've ever heard. My fretless is unique in that it has a matte finish on the body (which had to be replaced after an airline smashed the original one) and as a result has a more 'open' sound than any other fretless I've tried. But I'm a HUGE Modulus fan, and am looking forward to seeing what Joe Perman does now as JPerman basses. :)

    • @claudi0barragan
      @claudi0barragan 10 років тому

      do you have something else to say about jp basses? i own a very special built from modulus, a birdseye maple fingerboard Q5 wide.

    • @solobasssteve
      @solobasssteve 10 років тому

      claudio barragan Only that apart for a short time in the mid 2000s, Joe WAS Modulus in terms of build and design for a very long time, so expect the same kind of design ethos, quality of build and tonal ideas from him as from Modulus. I'm excited to see what he does next :)

      It's a Modulus 6 string, but it's a one-off custom version based on their OB6 semi-hollow idea, with an added carved top. If you contact them, I'm sure you could work something out to get one made, but it's not going to be cheap ;)

    Wow, people are still so fixed on your nails and failing to notice your playing. Steve has rocked nail polish for...well, I can't say, but it's at least a decade. Some say it's because it makes his nails harder, but let's face it, I've seen him in black polish when a clear coat would work just as well.
    It's like Bruce Lee said "It is like a finger pointing to the moon. Don't look at the finger, or you will miss all that heavenly glory."
    His playing is still, as beautiful as it ever was, or more so.

      it does have a truss rod but as I've never had to adjust it, I've no idea whether it's under any tension or not. For years Modulus basses were made without them, and very few ever needed any kind of adjustment at all… so I'm guessing there's not much tension there. Graphite is pretty stable :)

      Steve Lawson Oh, so you are a comedian too, good for you. I thought it was a valid question considering I am a bass player and end up watching your hands while you play, and at times depending on color it is kind of distracting to me. So I thought I would ask why. I am not British so maybe I missed your humor, but if you take the time to write something, the actual answer would have been nice.

    • @solobasssteve
