My favorite point in the video was when the baseline was added on top of the loop even though I'm sure it wasn't thought out. I find it really interesting that you can simply play a basic pattern over the loop and it will sound sufficiently well thought out. I didn't realize our ears are so willing to fill in and make us hear good sounds. Cool video.
I love this technique. I tried it this morning and was coming up with some really interesting harmonization ideas to my melody. Great ear training technique!
This was really helpful and inspirational. Just recently added a Ditto Looper to my board and this has just really opened it up for me. Thank you Steve and Scott's Bass Lesson for bringing us this video.
This actually really made me want a looper! Always thought it would be too muddy layering bass on bass, even in the higher register, but this proves otherwise. Although Steve has a high C string. Great video anyway, good advert for the course!
Been listening to Janek Gwizdala using a looper & thought I must get one...this has confirmed it! And I prefer to write a tune 'underneath' the melody. I know I'd never come up with those ideas doing it the normal way round..;-))
Steve Lawson Quick question...did you go to the Perth College music course?...I remember Pete Honeyman telling me about yourself about two decades ago ......
I play guitar and bass. A 6 string bass is usually tuned in perfect 4ths and is almost an unfair advantage. Notice I said "almost". Guitarists are thrown off by this as the 5ths get in the way. I find it to be crazy fun. i liken it to as lute.
Bass and loopers can be excellent, people like Steve Lawson and Renauld garcia-fons make great use of them. They dont have to be repetetive and boring. Thanks Steve.
One suggestion to look at songs were bass made the song. What is going on and how do players search and find successful riffs. Often it's a rhythmical thing. There is even a Bass 'n Drums genre. Many people have a sense that bass if very important and dancers knows the bass-line more than anything else.Trying to unlock this secret is interesting.
the Sofstep isn't connected to the Infinity (although it can be) - I'm using it with the Looperlative LP1 in the rack, and that is by the MIDI expander. I've been meaning to hook it up to the Infinity, and explore building a really kick ass tiny travel rig :)
Interesting idea building the structure from the top down rather than the bottom up as is normally done. Would you normally end up with a much sparser base line this way, or did it just turn out that way on this example?
Dear scott`s I am from Brazil and I am very much a fan of your work, so I am registered and I admire your knowledge to the subject. I'm a fan of double bass, but I do not have one, because here in Brazil it's very expensive. Could you export me with your autograph? But again thank you for your teachings here.
Oh man the looper my brother bought is just killing me. (Boss RC 300) i can't even time correctly the first loop, after the first it's okay i can jam. But the first one gosh i've to record litteraly dozens of it to get one tight. It doesn't even worth the time i spend on it and makes me feel very frustrated.

what an amazing player Steve Lawson is. i could watch his right hand technique for hours. his fingers just dance across the strings. marvellous.

so glad it's been useful. Definitely worth checking out the entire course over at SBL - it'll take you on quite a journey :)
Thanks. I have just signed up and this is going to be the first thing I'm checking out
Outstanding lesson. Thanks for sharing.

thanks Chris! Glad you're enjoying it :)
Also you can use pedals for contrast..also the looper is excellent for practice in general. Playing against chords and all that
His sound is just beautiful!

Great lesson!
Awesome video!!
Most Excellent good sir!
Nice! Very nice!
I was thinking of getting a compressor before a looper, but since I’m not currently gigging, this will be much more enjoyable.
Thank you for saying that. I have been thinking the same thing. Seeing your comment helped me firm up my decision. Merry Christmas!
Just seeing this now, I was thinking about the same thing and I’m brand new to looping. I may need to sign up and join the fun
great inspiration for my playing
Just got my Ditto looper back on my board, very good video Steve...!
excellent news! Glad you're finding it inspiring :)

I wanna play pretty melodies on my bass too.

that's good company to be in - Renaud is extraordinary! I love his music :)

Scott! Could you PLEASE find out what kind of spacing he's got on that 6 string? It looks really comfortable and a bit tighter than typical.
hey! it's 17mm - I can't play anything bigger than that! It's also 33" scale, which makes for a really easy playing experience :)
Name of the white knob gadget please. Is it a looper or multi fx
How is the Softstep2 connected to the Infinity looper? Are you using the midi expander?

Thanks for the reply. And loved your piece!

I'm sure there are ways of doing this that would be more full/groove based - have a go and see what you come up with! :)
I never knew Mr L likes wearing nail polish. I like people who like being themselves. Just saying. Nice post too.
hahabass ' I like people who like being themselves ' you sir have my appreciation

I've met Steve Lawson a few times - he can be very funny. He is way to serious here. He yelled at me for slapping once.

Here here! Although I've gotten better since I've began practicing with a metronome, I still find myself fumbling a little sometimes.
@@CuddlyJon Yup. You just gotta keep trying!
It's really hard to time loops.
What bass is that?
Elrick Gold Series SLC fretted 6 string :)
"Guyzzzz"
"Wickiiid"
"Soooper Soooooper"
"The Academy"
😂
Hilarious.
Is that a MAN????
Looks like my nan.
😨
There's nothing wrong with your nan looking like a dude. It's the 21st century after all. Let he be who she wants to be.
Love his vids but every video the glove throws me off
Not for beginners, look at that bass ffs. It’s probably a harp really. Lost interest straight away,
