This type of information and education is pure gold. Thankyou for sharing your trick and expirience. Every truck driver on a truck stop that i meet ill make shoure to start follow this chanel or stop by for repairs at your shop. Thankyou sir.
I've Never even considered Testing the boiling point of the soot to detect coolant. I work on pickup truck diesels and i usually pressure test the cooler or you can usually see the coolant crust in the cooler. Im going to get some coolant strips and try that next time. Another Great video Ryan , Thank you
I might add injector cups failing also cause, coolant pressure build up. My personal experience is from Volvo D13 cups. Which in turn blows up the reservoir like a balloon. But great video my man, keep em coming.
I finally found a shop, #4, that listened to me and did the test I requested after the other shops wouldn't, but just did the same tests the other shops did, all passing! The Peterbilt in Charlotte did the air compressor isolation test. That was it. Bad head. Replaced head, running great. No more issues! These so called techs at these shops will repeat tests to pad the bill it seems. They can also be arrogant and lazy.
Ryan . Perfect video. Thank you. 3 years ago I did overhaul due to same problem. I got a head gasket problem. My mechanic blocked my EGR cooler . He said that this is ok for my engine. I have Volvo 2008 with Cummins engine. So if my EGR is blocked it means it could be again block gasket or air compressor??
I just found a bad thermostat that created pressure. The t-stat wasn't opening all the way. it was enough to keep the temps within range but was creating enough excess pressure to blow out.
Hey Ryan, my coolant level fluctuates abnormally in my 2007 freightliner Columbia Detroit 60 14L. It will be so low cold that truck won’t start due to coolant being below low coolant sensor. I will fill to halfway mark, but then after running the truck the coolant will rise above the max line.
Ryan, good to see you again, you dropped off my computer not sure why but I'm back the shop wall looks good and you sounded good and good information thanks.
I apologize if I didn’t get back to you in time. I have already booked out 6 weeks. Won’t be able to schedule you in at this moment, but we are planning to hire people to help. Should be able to take on more work.
Thanks Ryan. I'm having a similar issue with my surge tank. It's not overheating or dirty but there's pockets of air in the surge which is triggering low coolant and stop engine sensors. Coolant levels and coolant temperature are normal. New coolant, tank, and coolant sensor but the problem persists. Do you think it might be the compressor?
Hey man love your videos especially you being a former landstar driver but I was wondering how often you got your overhead adjusted and how often you got your dpf filter changed , i been here with this truck about a year and I get my oil changed every 3 months but filling out my maintnance report made me think I should start thinking bout overheads a cleaning filters even tho it's been an awesome truck with hardly no problems but I thought I'd get on here and ask you
DPF filter cleaning recommendation for cummins is every 250,000 miles. However, if you idle a lot and don’t have an APU you will have to clean it closer to 200,000. Also your oil changes shouldn’t be on a 3 month interval but a specific milage interval. I change mine every 15,000 miles and use Rotella T5 semi synthetic 10w30. Hope this was helpful. I too am at Landstar, I have a Thermo King Tri-pak and keep my idle time to an absolute minimal. Idle time will absolutely clog your dpf filters and cause a whole host of issues.
I have that problem at Volvo d13 engine Just under heavy Load uphill I do not have any leak bot when pressure buildup the coolant over flow thru the cap valve what you recommended to check EGR Cooler or compressor ?
Ryan, the company that I drive for has replaced the head, head gasket, air compressor and the EGR cooler. I'm still getting back pressure and losing coolant. Anything else that we can look at.
Im suspecting my EGR cooler is bad, but i only build pressure when climbing a mountain with a heavy load. Starts to dump coolant out of the overflow when the temps go up. When the fan comes on the pressure goes back down. I noticed once while doing a parked regen. Temp would go up, pressure would build, and coolant would come out of the overflow tube. Fan kicks on, temp goes back down, leaking stops until it repeats the process. Didn't do it before, just started happening this summer. Have a Volvo D13. What do you think? And thank you for this very informative video.
@kentrellhicks5257 no, still doing the same thing. If it was the head gasket or egr cooler it would maintain constant pressure. I'm suspecting the thermostat isn't opening all the way. I was up in Seattle and didn't have the issue at all with the cooler weather. Once I got down to Arizona with 113° outside temps the coolant would stay above the 170 operating temperature. Just stayed at 180 to 190 and it never did that before either. I actually had to turn the heater on, and the temperature slowly started coming down. Had to stop once to refill the coolant reservoir.
If you take a antifreeze stip scap the carbon from said EGR. Now add a cap full of distilled water until carbon is dissolved. Test with strip….beats taking it off for a simple test
If this is the way you choose to test it that's fine I suppose, but wouldn't you have to check the soot on the hotside also to know it's not coming into the system pre egr cooler?
Hey brian, I just changed the water pump on a t680 kenworth, and I feel like the engine temperature goes up faster than usual. When I go uphill, it does not overheat, and the fan kicks in. Unless it's in my head. Would you give me your two cents, please
Hey, have you explained what needs to happen after an EGR cooler goes bad? I had mine replaced under warranty but the soot/snot in the tubes is astronomical. They said the system would burn it out. Is this true, or do I need to take everything apart and clean it?
Can the EGR Cooler be bad if I’m not noticing a coolant loss from the reservoir tank. I have code “EGR DELTA PRESSURE” SPN-411 FMI-1 Replaced Delta P Sensor and cleaned all connector pipes and ports. Check engine light still comes on when I pull up a hill. I get white smoke coming out of stack pipe when accelerating hard or pulling up hill. Once the “EGR DELTA PRESSURE” check engine light comes on then I get no white smoke anymore, but engine performance is decreased.
Mine has same issue so we had low coolant light coming up but every time we checked coolant wa ok then we changed the pigtail didnt help chnaged the tank it helped for few days then back again . Intake throttle valve gone bad after that my tank had little black color in it i dip my finfer in to see if its oil it wasnt oil as oil would stick to finger could tell ao what cluld it be i dotn want to pull head as i have no performance issue and not enough pressure at idling only on road . And it kinda smoke as if coolant burnign
I have a 2015 cascadia with dd15. It loses power and smokes accelerating from a stop sometimes. Only have this issue in the winter. I was told it was a bad head. I replaced. I was told it’s bad injectors. I replaced. Ecm got replaced. Fuel pump got replaced. I’m all out of money and the problem still exit. When the truck is warmed up all the way it doesn’t smoke and it only happens when bobtail. Under a load truck runs flawlessly. I don’t know what the problem is. If you have any idea please let me know.
I’ve got same problem with over heating when on lower gear for an automatic international truck with Cummins ISX 15. When I wake up doing pretrip I don’t see the coolant is like it needs to be re-filled but over flow when filled l., please give me your shop address so I can bring my unit boss
Over pressure not overheating, 2019 paccar mx13, sciped egr no soot gunk or coolant they said. Various pressure tests, combustion gas tests, all passed. At a loss. Bad fill cap? Bad pressure relief side cap? Checked air dryer purge valve, no coolant. Radiator seam popped. New radiator, new air compressor lines, new bushing, still happening. Three shops, no clue.
I have coolant going into my engine oil when I pour it into the reservoir Now theirs too much oil in engine which is pushing it out through the oil filler neck when truck is running
I replace the Egr cooler and the Air Compressor but I'm still having high pressure in my cooling system. I do have combustion gas because the blue fluid turn yellow . The truck DO NOT overheat.. WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?
Now those are true facts! I've had more disappointment at Kw to make me wanna quit trucking. They don't know what they're doing and shop prices are too damn high let alone a timely matter of getting the truck fixed.....
The problem is I'm losing coolant but I have no high pressure and no visible leaks. I'm gonna put a leak tester on it in the morning but I'm worried? 😔
Have to same problem with my own 2007 Peterbilt C15, only thing I try and get parts and the guys at part keep telling me something different every time. I go one day and they tell me the Egr cooler is bad and when I decide to finally replace it, they say it doesn’t have it. They then tell me it has a precooler and not a Egr cooler. Then I don’t purchase anything and I go again and rinse and repeat anyone have clue on this situation to solve this problem.
the fault with your solution is that the cylinder head gasket that is leaking fills the cylinder and pumps the coolant into the exhaust, and makes it impossible to determine where its coming from, one psi of pressure raises the boiling point of water by three degrees, you should know this, a radiator must cool 30 degrees from the top tank to the outlet at the bottom tank per pass or its clogged, it does not take 8 hours to do a egr cooler, and a air compressor is about a two hour job, easiest way to check a egr cooler is to remove the clamp at the rear of the egr cooler and the rubber hose at the back of the engine and use a mirror to inspect it, sometimes the coolant will run out the clamp and leave tracks on the block. when a story seems to be fishy its most like just a story, drivers and customers say so and so said this, unless its in writing or you personally hear it the story is suspect.
