How Sad! This was once a very beautiful home and it makes you wonder about it's history ! Actually that would make a wonderful series on the history channel ! I would love to watch it ,anyone else ???
I've seen dozens and dozens of abandoned homes. About half of them were abandoned for obvious reasons, (like being too close to a river or destroyed by storm, etc.), but I've seen a few that really made me wonder why they just get left to rot. It would be nice to learn the history behind some of them, like this one. I'd watch a documentary like that about abandoned houses and their history.
yeah Mike this was a very beautiful home at one time. true American classic, look like it's in a nice place by a river/lake. Train tracks in the back yard, but a train lover would like that too. shame, sad.....
I saw and read that interesting history. Started out in 1884 on 45.8 acres of land but in this article I read only 9 acres is left after the county bought most of the land to build a park nearby. See article here: www.washingtonpost.com/local/for-sale-the-faded-grandeur-of-the-winderbourne-mansion/2016/04/18/2138eeda-0568-11e6-a12f-ea5aed7958dc_story.html
SweetFLGuy1 Thanks for the update, and I love the huge photo. In my opinion, Pickrell is being way too avaricious in asking so much for this amazing property. If he really wants it to be restored to its former glory, it should be donated to a non-profit Restoration Project that will use volunteers to do the work and pay him a percentage of the tourist take when it's finished. There are scads of historical edifice buffs -- many of them right here in these comments -- who'd be delighted to contribute their time, effort, and goods to such a project, as has been done many times before on other historic mansions, one of which is the now glorious Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum right here in Norwalk, CT. What a beautiful place imagine the man who built this house and what he must have felt like the first day they moved in a brand new place so luxurious sitting on its own little water way the family must have had grand times in a house like that.
This if probably one of the best videos I have seen on abandoned homes. The house must have been magnificent in it's day. I love the porches and decks. I can't imagine the house is salvageable at all. Thank you Purkz.
Man! So many decades have gone by. I can feel laughter of better days running up the old stairs. I sense the sorrow of a broken heart behind the walls. Children were born here bringing joy. People also died here unleashing a sadness that never went away. Life! That’s all that is represented here, let’s be happy that it happened here. Nicely made video, by the way.
I can almost hear the sounds of people living their lives here. Children running up and down the stairs, people cooking in the kitchen, television sets blaring. Certainly this was a grand home for many people from the same family. I wonder what caused them to abandon everything. It doesn't look like it was a gradual process.

This is the Winderbourne Mansion. It was built in 1884 by Enoch and Mary Totten. He was a prominent Washington lawyer and Civil War veteran, shot four times at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. (A minie ball passed through his right hand after ricocheting off his saber.) Mary's father was Timothy Howe, a senator from Wisconsin and the cousin and heir of Elias Howe, who perfected the sewing machine. All three of the Tottens’ children caught typhoid fever; contracted, it was believed, from tainted drinking water at Winderbourne. One died. A Totten daughter, Edith Totten, became a doctor and adopted a daughter of her own. This child was killed after sliding down - and, presumably, flying off - the long bannister at Winderbourne. Edith herself dropped dead at age 48 after delivering a lecture at Johns Hopkins University. Edward Pickrell Jr., inherited Winderbourne and stayed there until his death in 2004. Paxton Pickrell (now in his 70's) is the current owner. It has an offer pending on Zillow for $875,000. 15001 Barnesville Rd, Boyds, MD 20841. This was amazing! Makes you wonder where the past owners went? Why everything was left there the way it was? In a way just kind of scary. Thank you for this.
Icpink Queen the banks kicked them out. Then they just sit on the property instead of letting someone buy it. During college I had a job where I would fill out contracts from every bank you could think of to make contact with homeowner, fill out a survey, and take a bunch of pictures of house. Some of the vacant houses still had plenty of belongings inside, like they were locked out without a chance to get back in. Some of these houses were scary as hell and once I ran into a squatter.

I loved this video. Smooth and creative camera work with an inspiring, uplifting musical score allows my mind to fill in the blanks and relive the lives of the house’s inhabitants. Much better than our mental process being framed by a guide’s confining, repetitive remarks. I felt like the spirit of the people who lived there, swishing around from room to room, taking a loving look around the old cars I worked on, running up the stairs as children, and finally riding and getting an appreciative overview of the house, the property, the land. Just a wonderful wonderful experience. Thank you so much for creating this piece of art and for sharing it with us. Amazing!
sensory defect drums I actually have that same fridge, made by general motors in the late 40s mid 50s I believe when found their missing the bottom cover mine has everything with it
The Are 1962 Chevy Impala (2) the other is a1972or 1973 Buick LeSabre I had a1972 Buick 225 the big super lead sled the house must have been GORGEOUS in her heyday it's a shame that she's left to rot!!
ua-cam.com/video/_Oj8K6_QKnc/v-deo.html I made a small clip of just those cars when we went. I was ridiculously excited to be there and I didn't realize the trim was so high on those 62s. So originally I thought they were 63s. Once I got back and watched it I realized the side trim. My bad on that part LOL Such a shame these cars were left to rot, these were beautiful machines in their day. When I was researching some of the history on this house I read that it was originally pink with rose color trim around the windows and doors!! I would have loved to seen what it looked like in its day!!
Purkz: I just watched another of your vids. I don't know what you want to do in life - or what you are doing - but you ought to consider going to New York or L.A. and shooting video. I spent 20 years there and I know a little about the business. Some of your shots in the indoor pool tennis court piece are just brilliant. Your steadycam and drone work demonstrate a great innate since of vision! A camera guy can make a great living once he is established. So if you are not already established, get going at it!!!!
thank you! im actually planning to move to southern California at the end of august...ive met some people out there already so hopefully i can make something out of this hobby.
+Your purkz I was thinking the same thing. Your drone flying skills are wonderful. I hope you find a really good place that appreciates what you can do. I felt as though I was soaring just watching your video.
I would buy it if I could afford it! Beautiful home and property! Amazing video too! You perfectly captured this home and make it easy to fall in live with even in its current state! Great job!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Conversations over heard Walking up to an old Victorian home in the middle of the woods...'Bro check out these cars, woooo that big ass tree fell completely over on the house!' 'Yah I know hey there's a KEEP OUT sign, and a sign for CCTV, I know, I know!' Both walk past the signs and enter the beautiful delipidated house...'Bro you think anyone saw us?' 'IDK dude let's explore!' LOL loved the video! Your camera work and the drone work are spectacular!
This is the "Winderbourne" mansion, or "Totten House". Constructed in 1884 by an heiress of the guy who invented the modern sewing machine. She had children who all got typhoid. One died. Another child died trying to slide down the banister in the house. Last lived in around 2004. Much of the land of the original estate was sold to the Black Hill Regional Park, or eaten by the man-made lake. They should have sold the house to the park instead of trying to cash out at the height of the Great Recession. Maybe it would have been saved, since it's on the national register of historic places. It's been on the decline since the 80's, and now looks beyond hope. Like others have said, probably the best "abandoned" video on UA-cam. Great filming, music, and highly-intriguing subject.
I wish the the author would have told us this in the video instead of me having to scroll down the comments for 5 minutes. thanks for the info. otherwise the drone take this video to the next level
It's the Winderbourne Mansion, not the Totten House (different house). It's in Maryland, it is surrounded by now-county-owned property, and they have made a move to 'condemn to reclaim' against the property once, already. High pricing is a serious curse to it, too. While he (the current owner) may be trying to 'scare' the county repossessers, he is also pricing it so far out of the park, that only a conservancy will ever make a move. It is on the list of 'National Historic Places', so if you buy the 9-acres (where the lake has already ate the rest), then you get a choice, restore it perpetually to keep it as it is, or drop the BIG BUCKS and restore it to the way it was when lived-in, while the National Historic Society watches your every move, and insists you spend twice too much to fix it up. What a joke - the term 'White Elephant' can't even begin to describe this black-hole of a financial nightmare. Great video, though.
I would have loved to have seen this house in its prime. Beautiful house and land. And the cars! Great video man and very well done. Never seen anything like it!
I love old THINGS and I Love this house! Wow! That wrap around PORCH is awesome!! Brings back memories! Some old folk used to call these porches GALLERIES! WHERE'S PAPA?!? OH, HE'S SITTING OUT ON THE GALLERY! LOVE IT!🧡❤️🙏
if i was guessing- by the looks of the innards- i'd say time stopped in about '78 and probably was a widow of the guy who probably owned all that farm land that has been partially developed for commercial, some residential use that's across the train tracks. there have to be some relatives for it to be for sale as it is and not up for tax bill sale. they must have taken the cash from the estate and left the house to rot. it's very possible that's a balloon frame old style house with no installation- cool stuff but impossible to keep heat in or out of it lol
100 dislike today, 061816. What were all these 'dislikes' looking for to dislike this thread? ---- The last occupants of this farm house were documents believers with everything. This is so interesting in the person(s) that did all this paper collecting, they are so gone, years ago and every small piece of paper they took a life time keeping it safe, is still there, waiting to be useful again to its original owner. Some of the book binders look to be recorded files of sort. This old home site would be an excellent archaeological research sight for a college class, no bones, pottery fragments, carbon test, cave wall art but collect all paper scrapes, books , plot, diagram the hoarders flowchart from starting dates to last, latest identifiable dates. ---
Marylanders are more intelligent and well read compared to California assholes for sure. They even take work seriously. I had to move from California to Washington, as I did not fit in there! It has nothing to do with race nor culture, as everyone there is a freaking goofball in shitty Southern California. Seattle is diversity with high IQ. LA is diversity with low IQ for sure. Maryland is better than LA. Washington is better than Los Angeles for sure. Baltimore is cool. Even Washington, DC was great in the 1970s. I used to live in Montgomery County near Route 355! Now, I live in King County near Route 520!
It makes me sad because I have land with a house not near that fancy sitting on it. I refused to sell it but told my nephew to start planting Christmas trees on the land so him and his son can sell them at Christmas time. I don’t want to sell because my parents worked for it and I was the only one that wanted it. I meant to move back and build but bank wouldn’t give me the money so ended up buying a new house about 25 miles from it.I wish we knew the story behind the house, there were lots of cars and farm equipment. It’s strange everyone disappeared at once. ,
Looks like in my home state of Maryland! Lived there during the 1970s for sure. Left in 1977! Maryland and Washington are the best states. I live near Seattle. In Maryland, I lived in Montgomery County, Maryland. In Washington, I live in King County. Nice 1970s Buick in the yard too. Plus some 1960s Chevrolets too. The previous owner had a good taste in cars for sure. Lucky, we still make Chevrolet and Buick. I have a 2013 Chevrolet and I will get a 2016 Buick Enclave later with better towing capacity of 4500 pounds. 2013 Chevrolet tows 1000 pounds, but I have towed trailers as much as 1500 pounds. Empty trailers were 850 pounds or 990 pounds from U Haul!
Oh my! This is the best one I have seen thus far. What a gorgeous place it must have been!! You were brave to climb those stairs! Thank you! Great tour!
Someone lived a life and now all these things that were precious to them are now in neglected decay, and yet are worth thousands to collectors. The music is perfect for this video, and even matched the bees on the window upstairs. The Buick and Chevy Impala are worth money if only for the parts. Thanks for giving all us Dayvan Cowboys a trip from our armchairs to a lost time and place. Well done Purkz.
Best video I have ever seen on UA-cam. Certainly professionally done. Wonder how they managed to float the camera around, top, bottom, left, right, upstairs, downstairs. And the music was not bad either. Beautifully done. House will need serious money spending on it to restore it properly. Probably 300k needed to do so. Who has put up this price of nearly 900k? Way out and unrealistic.

Would love to know the history behind that house. Must have been beautiful in it's time. If walls could talk bet there would be so many stories from that house alone.
Yeah and the child voice in the music at 4:04 when he just rounds the stairs. says get out. Listen to it several times and you can definitely hear a child.
Wow your video is amazing, Ive watched hundreds of abandoned videos from houses to hotels, factories, hospitals etc, and I must say this ranks right up there. The camera work is excellent and the use of the drone is perfect, a view Ive almost never seen in other videos. If you can continue to produce videos like this you will see your subscribers rise as fast as your drone! Again Awesome job.
I'm getting old now and have seen many places like this. They can't all be preserved, and they are disappearing. Very nice job of preserving this one at least on video, thanks much.
What a beautiful building that would have been, still is - such a shame that art like is left to fall into ruin.....some lovely trees on the property as well. Pretty much beyond saving by the looks of it. Very well filmed and presented - thanks.
What a beautiful house.. it can be rebuilt.. looks like some 4 decades back people used to live here .. no idea where they vanished leaving such a beautiful house all alone
@@jshmorris4 Exactly this house is close to one million dollars if it's not remodeled when it's purchased that's a high price in can be put into a new home
I am really glad to see you paying attention to the structure, floor plan and some of the antiques instead of the trash on the trash on the floor like so many other 'explorers' do. I really enjoyed your program.

I was impressed as the camera glided while ascending the stairs. You can get a slight glimpse of the equipment in the reflection on the windowpanes at 4:03. Impressive work overall - way beyond my expectations for a UA-cam video. Definitely not just another cell phone video, lol.
idc whose vids you did or did not use but this was great editing and adding things, for the music ii thought it went very well with the whole video...2 thumbs up mann!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am for 15 first minutes on this channel, but already know how i adore your mind and work, it's like crash. how beautifully you spend your life! I want living my full life like this. 15 minutes ago my life was incomplete, I think it was complete and magic, but nooow I'm beyond. sorry, if my english crooking, it's not only words anyway
I wonder what happened to the family, though. Did they just up-and-leave? Were they kicked out, were they killed? This house holds a lot of mystery to me.
based on "The family man" book, this house would still beinhabited until 1980, so I guess this is what a house in the woods looks like, after being abandoned for 40 years
There must be a story of this house. Nobody can dare to abandon such a big house like this, and probably a beautiful one in the old days without a valid reason.
I'm freaking out ... Those pieces of furniture are INSANE ! They could be saved ! WTF That refrigerator was awesome too.. And the kitchen cabinets ! I bet they were metal ! I want it all... 😍😍😍

Nice wordplay! I wish I could do that.
Thank you for sharing this, one of the most amazing abandoned videos I've seen until today. And very good recording abilities!
thank you and your welcome!
Completely agree it's a nice vid.

Great camera work, by far the best of any abandoned exploration channels. Like wamr butter man, so smooth.
Stunning camera work, Brilliant editing 10/10 Thanks for sharing this awesome work.

The things you can do with drones these days is amazing. Loved this video. Wouldn't watch it alone at night though. LOL
I agree, I loved the fluid motion of the drone. Made it easier to watch.
Does look kinda spooky. =-)
I just watched it alone at night in the dark... Totally creeped out now...
I just watched it in the daytime still kinda creepy!
The Are 1962 Chevy Impala (2) the other is a1972or 1973 Buick LeSabre I had a1972 Buick 225 the big super lead sled the house must have been GORGEOUS in her heyday it's a shame that she's left to rot!!
John F Hinson, there is a '65 Impala Super Sport convertible next to the blue Impala.
Go back there tow it to a garage and restore it.
JR VB I agree! If u have the extra cash do it! It would be quite an investment....

I made a small clip of just those cars when we went.
You are by far the Best Abandoned home Explorer ever.. I love watching .. The music and the camera scanning is top notch.. TY .. NEVER BORING 👍🏼👍🏼♥️🇺🇸
+Your purkz
I was thinking the same thing. Your drone flying skills are wonderful. I hope you find a really good place that appreciates what you can do.
I felt as though I was soaring just watching your video.
dude, your video work is outstanding, you can make alot of money, your videos, are killer
I disagree - I've spent 40 years in cinematography.. the work is average...and it's not rocket science with today's tools.
I write music for Avatar II and Bond25 (up and coming) and this is superb work. It doesn't matter what that guy said. Bravo!
Excellent camera work! Imagine what that beautiful old place looked like in 1940.
Was thinking the clothes on the clothes rack and wardrobes looked in good condition for something abandoned in 1974. Cheers for your comment
This is incredible. I love how this was shot. This is definitely getting my creative juices flowing

Would have been a beautiful house in its day....
It's a murder house. Nobody wants a murder house.
Good one, Juice!
still is a beautiful house....
It also appears to have been very well built, many of these old buildings rot and fall down much quicker.
if i was guessing- by the looks of the innards- i'd say time stopped in about '78 and probably was a widow of the guy who probably owned all that farm land that has been partially developed for commercial, some residential use that's across the train tracks. there have to be some relatives for it to be for sale as it is and not up for tax bill sale. they must have taken the cash from the estate and left the house to rot. it's very possible that's a balloon frame old style house with no installation- cool stuff but impossible to keep heat in or out of it lol
How is there 91 people who don't like this? This video is absolutely amazing - keep 'em coming man!
Absolutely fantastic.... I gonna go look for bodies buried there..
For a self proclaimed genius, you seem to need to say "for sure" an awful lot, for sure. I suppose it is a Maryland/Seattle thing, for sure
+mongrel jack I agree, incredible!
Great vid. I prefer no narrative to somebody commenting on things like "here's a doorknob" or "I wonder what this is" when it's obviously a doorknob.

So heartbreaking! :(
What happened to the people
It makes me sad because I have land with a house not near that fancy sitting on it. It’s strange everyone disappeared at once. ,
Adi Pat, me😔

Loved your video. One of the best (abandon house) videos I have seen on UA-cam.
thank you!
Empty trailers were 850 pounds or 990 pounds from U Haul!
the only abandon house video I've seen on UA-cam
Oh my! This is the best one I have seen thus far. What a gorgeous place it must have been!! You were brave to climb those stairs! Thank you! Great tour!
Professional quality filming. Nice job.
It's gorgeous! I love the music and editing of this video. Awesome job! If I had the money I would buy it lol

Probably used a drone for the camera footage.
Probably cause the house sits on 9 acres of land on a lake.
+SweetFLGuy1 exactly! the land alone is worth that...it's beautiful!!
I agree, the land is beautiful and so are you :D I'm now singing a 70's song called I'm a believer when I saw your face :D Have a good day and night.
This famous estate estate covers 46 acres, not 9. For a detailed history see my reference at the top of these posts.
$875,000 for this? In reality it is worth probably $10,000-$20,000, unless there is a hidden gold mine beneath it.
I imagine it is the property itself that has most of the value.
Thanks for sharing. Love seeing the house. Wish someone bring it alive to live in. Old cars great. I was young when those cars came out new
Excellent video! 10 thumbs up.
This made me sad....this house is full of sweet memories and now it is abandoned....

Yeah and the child voice in the music at 4:04 when he just rounds the stairs. says get out. Listen to it several times and you can definitely hear a child.
I heard something like a very faint kids voice at 4.06 couldn't make out what was said.

What a beautiful building that would have been, still is - such a shame that art like is left to fall into ruin.....some lovely trees on the property as well. Pretty much beyond saving by the looks of it. Very well filmed and presented - thanks.
Beautiful camera work! Great job! This is the first I've seen any of your videos. Much better than the "walk-along" typical type with narration.
Same the walk along videos can be very boring.
What a beautiful house.. it can be rebuilt.. looks like some 4 decades back people used to live here .. no idea where they vanished leaving such a beautiful house all alone
For the price I hope they rebuild it before buying. That would make sense.
@@jshmorris4 Exactly this house is close to one million dollars if it's not remodeled when it's purchased that's a high price in can be put into a new home
The family man book was released in 1975.. so im guessing 2 decades

I was impressed as the camera glided while ascending the stairs. You can get a slight glimpse of the equipment in the reflection on the windowpanes at 4:03. Impressive work overall - way beyond my expectations for a UA-cam video. Definitely not just another cell phone video, lol.

I wonder what happened to the family, though. Did they just up-and-leave? Were they kicked out, were they killed? This house holds a lot of mystery to me.
They passed away
based on "The family man" book, this house would still beinhabited until 1980, so I guess this is what a house in the woods looks like, after being abandoned for 40 years
There must be a story of this house. Nobody can dare to abandon such a big house like this, and probably a beautiful one in the old days without a valid reason.
We will never know...
I was thinking probably like a murder or something happened
Google search ' Winderbourne mansion ' and you will find the tragic history about the house
