David Bowie | “Heroes” | Live at Earls Court | 30 June 1978

- David Bowie 1978 tour footage, predominately from the 30th of June Earls Court show, synced to "Heroes" from the album, Welcome to the Blackout, recorded live at the Earls Court shows.
•
The David Bowie Isolar II 1978 World Tour, also known as The Low / Heroes World Tour or The Stage Tour, hit London forty years ago. Three nights were played at the Earls Court Arena, 29th & 30th of June & the 1st of July.
The Earls Court shows were hailed as a triumph. In July ’78, the NME published Nick Kent’s review of one of the shows, which ended with, “That shimmering sizzle, that fizzy brilliance that is undeniably attuned to Bowie's work, was all there on Thursday. It impressed me, it entertained me and very occasionally had me almost spell-bound. It was a total success.”
The never-completed and never-shown David Hemmings-directed STAGE movie, was shot at the last two Earls Court shows. The forty year old undigitised reels for which, are to this day gathering dust at the Bowie archive. The STAGE movie is perhaps the ultimate lost treasure of the Bowie cannon. For decades it’s been the subject of much speculation among fans, who are desperate to see it. So with my video here, we have at least a small taste of how the film might be. The combination of the magnificent version of “Heroes” from Welcome to the Blackout, and the excellent footage mostly from the same show, shot by the LWT crew, is I think one of the best documents we have from the ‘78 tour.
This video serves as a very personal memento for me, of the concert that I most wish I had been able to attend. In the summer of 1978, I was already a Bowie fan. However, I was only 11 years old. I don’t remember if I was aware of the tour at the time, but regardless there would have been no way my parents would have allowed me to go. I do remember that I saw at some point, at least part of the LWT Bowie Special TV program, that was shot at the Earls Court shows. I don’t know how I could have seen the show when it was first broadcast because my parents were not high-brow types; they would not have been interested in watching an alternative arts show. And moreover I have a vague recall that my Dad was irritated by the presenter of the show, Janet Street-Porter.
There was a part of the interview Bowie gave on the show, where he mentioned that he would be touring again in one or two years, and I knew that I wanted to be at those shows. Sadly, that tour never materialized, and it would be 5 years until he came back to play live, doing the Serious Moonlight thing. But by then, I was no longer a child, times had changed, and Bowie’s current Let’s Dance pop music and style did not appeal to me. As I have said many times, the show that I caught at London’s Wembley Arena, in 1983, was the big musical disappointment of my life.

There is in existence, a perfect HD digital transfer of the LWT material. Unfortunately I don’t have it. And so instead what we have here is a matrix I’ve cobbled together of 7 different versions of the footage, that I’ve collected over the years. All versions are incomplete, and contain considerable glitches. Combining all these versions, gets around most of the issues, but causes some variance in quality, and moreover still leaves us with about 30 seconds missing from the performance. You may decide for yourself, if that particular issue has been convincingly masked here.
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!

Absolutely one of the best songs ever written in the history of music
No, not in his deameaner. He has Nazi like shirt, boots and blonde straight hair, when it is naturally red. He sang it in German in Germany.
HIs white duke period is offensive to Jews.
@@nadinea6027 He was not a Nazi, then he succumbed to the influence of Berlin culture and music. He was born blond, not red.
Bowie a traversé une période sombre dans sa carrière notamment the thin white duke mais station un de ses meilleurs albums ! un grand avec des contradictions comme nous même !
shut up
1978 - Awesome song !
2019 - Awesome song !
3049 - Awesome song !
HOW DID YOU KNOW?!!! Amazing! I TOTALLY believe you too! :)
Canzone senza tempo....capolavoro!!

Bowie is a poet, a prophet, I nominate him for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
No.... he's just a mortal with the potential of a superman... living on ⚡
Bobby Zimmerman claimed it.
Ditto, or even Sir, REST IN PEACE 🙏 ❤🎉😢 .
I was there. It sent tingles up my spine - then and now. My adoration and appreciation began in 1971. Thank god I was born at the same time He was here.
Steven Jones lucky bugger!
For sure! This tour stopped in Chicago, April '78 and I went all 3 nights. I was so excited to see him, I actually crashed my '72 Impala into the parking garage wall parking. I was able to get some good pics, as I got right next to the stage.

He must have been so handsome in person! You are beyond lucky!
Ha ! I'm so jealous, but i was not even born...
I was also there that night! My ticket was priced at £5 but I bought it for £7 from someone who worked at a Sheffield record shop as the gig was sold out.
Wish I was alive when he looked like this. He looked absolutely exquisute
I wish I was alive.
I wish I looked like this when I was alive
I remember ❤❤❤
I was 15 when this was sang
❤
This is the purest version of this song I've heard ... to have been recorded 44 + years ago attests to Bowie's generational talents ....
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this is the best version of this song. It just feels so harmonious and captures that bittersweet feeling of life that this song creates like no other, slowly escalating to the triumphant final chorus.
Brilliant work syncing this.
Vincente22 thanks :) I’m currently expanding the work I did here, into a 30 - 40 minute documentary about the Earls Court 78 shows. Watch this space!
@@NachoVideo That's exciting! I certainly will, been loving your work
Agreed. Brilliant.
I will stay tuned too.
Thank you soo much!
IDK that version with queen an Ronson is pretty epic
@@NachoVideo please!!!!
I'm 31 and love music from all decades and this song is a masterpiece and will never die
The violin in this version is magnificent - Bowie's understated delivery is superb - thanks for posting, a real treat to see this.
I love David's vocals in this song but it's the underlying driving guitar and synthesizer that create the melancholic mood. Just a complete masterpiece of a song that is a must listen everytime I hear it.
I don’t think there are keyboards it’s just Adrian Belew on guitar
I didn't really get into Bowie's music until after he died. Shame on me. He was an amazing man not only because of his beautiful music but also because he was a beautiful human being. I know he is sitting on a star somewhere in the sky creating inventive and amazing music for the future.
I think you are correct, I have the very same Feeling ,
Bettina Feiner, He,s takeing part in the GREAT GIG IN THE SKY with GEORGE MICHAEL, LEMMY, JOHN LENNON CHARLE WATS JOHN BONHAM GINGER BAKER MEAT LOAF GEORGE HARRISON and quiet a few more, The big guys have a great time all the angels are hoping and a boping. PEACE BE WITH YOU MY FRIEND.✌️✌️✌️😎😎😎🏴🏴🏴🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦
Thought i was the only one.. slow enough to get into his music towards the end. Got a feeling i wont be the last though. Daughters are now singing his songs. My 3 year old was just demanding for the .. " Hey man song!"....
I wish!!
No shame. You’re wonderful. I’m glad you’re with us.
Adrian Belew is playing the original guitar line by Robert Fripp and killing it. Also, a great performance by Dennis Davis on drums. Another underrated drummer.
It’s a cool world that belew and fripp found each other.
Love this Adrian Belew fabulous!!
I actually didn’t like his drumming on this. He kept repeating that triplet fill that was too long and doesn’t fit the song.
Always liked Danny Davis, even as a former wrestler.
Bowie poached Belew from Zappa's touring band.
The drumming is also quite good in this version! Love it! RIP Bowie and Dennis Davis.
🖤 Dennis e David 😢
this doesn’t have a single flaw. this is as good as music can get
HE IS THE BEST YOU CAN GET!!!
It's definitely not from this world...
Ace ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
His trousers are ill fitting
It's not bad 🙂
Adrian Belew on guitar - EPIC!
I'm now 64 but have been a fan since I was 16. Yeah.. it's been that long. Bowie has morphed more than any other artist. And it was always an upgrade. He was just freakishly talented.
I agree, same vintage, just glad to have been around at the same time
love how the violin and the guitar sound together
Manuel Ramírez Me too! To me, that is the best sound he ever created - pure magic!
@@biddydibdab9180 The excellent Simon House on violin. :)
Dylan did similar on his Rolling Thunder Revue tour using Scarlett Rivera on violin like a lead guitar. Both these artists the best the world has and will see!
guitars are really similar to violins
I think it's actually the violin with overdrive and delay
This guitar is so f**king amazing, OMG!
Yes you're so right ! Robert Fripp created this guitar sound in his band "King Crimson".
I was there too! I’m actually filmed in the front row. An amazing concert that I will never forget.
Lucky
Don't ever forget
This song is so beautiful nothing can’t compete with this masterpiece. ❤❤
Still my favorite song after all these years
You are so Right 👍😎 - es gibt echt Songs die einfach nur gut sind 😘 - die muss man nicht totquatschen ... 😅 . einfach echt guter Song
It's, "Nothing CAN compete."
"Nothing can't", is a double negative.
Never seen anything so beautiful. Im crying.
Superior & Superbe ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
This is the best live version of this song I have ever heard.
Oh yeah, the drums and the mix of violín and guitar make the diference
Absolutely agree. It is the slowest version with the most balls.
Musikladen is better-especially the vocals. Not so much the sound quality, though:

@@cl8804 thank you so much
Yes
'Heroes' remains a powerful testament to the human spirit's capacity for courage and the belief in the possibility of change, no matter how ephemeral.
Wow! this has got to be THE definitive version. Such emotion, such conviction. Incredible.
Musikladen is better-especially the vocals. Not so much the sound quality, though:

@@cl8804 No. Musikladen is awesome but this slays it by comparison.
Agreed!💜💖
It's up there !
Best version? What is a best version' The Live Aid version touches are much more ... and many others too
This is Bowie's best live version of this iconic masterpiece. Same with the other 75 versions of this song. Bowie ALWAYS delivered!!!
joe22589 Not on David Live. I adore him but that was a turd 😊
@@ottovonbismarck6310 Well it was a case of here today gone tomorrow BUT Jagger who critisized him strongly over the release eventually reversed his opinion, not suggesting you do of course, it is however best that it is 'logged' in the annals (sic) of musical history ;)
Musikladen is better-especially the vocals. Not so much the sound quality, though:
ua-cam.com/video/t3nHmZRg_sE/v-deo.html
His reality tour version is his best
@@ottovonbismarck6310 you don't like David Live? You mean live at universal amphitheatre 1974?
The more live Bowie performances I see, the more I miss him. He was just brilliant.
Stage Tour. Berlin. Just will never forget. RIP. Legend is not a strong enough tribute.
the ecstasy of music
I'm actually crying now. Just an overflow of what my heart cannot take anymore....
THIS IS THE BEST VERSION I HAVE HEARD AND I HAVE LISTENED TO MANY BUT WHAT HE DOES TO THIS JUST GIVES YA GOOSEBUMPS..JUST POURS EVERYTHING INTO IT SUCH SOUL AND STAGE PERSONNA.. REALLY DOES..IT GETS TO YOU ..YOU LITTERALLY FEEL IT..
I saw Bowie in November 1978 in Melbourne's, cricket ground . Australia.I was 16 years old and he blew my mind ..loved him to this day .Now and 60 I still listen to him almost daily .
I saw him live twice, and I’m grateful for that. Bowie = God
Just dropped by to say Bowie looked his most elegant in 78 imo
'76......please
Thank you David Bowie for uplifting my soul. Thank you Nacho for keeping his magic alive ❤
same x
Ace ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
the way every musician here is killing it.... and davids passion and stage presence... im in tears of how genius this is
YES THE 1ST TIME I SAW THIS VERSION..IT WAS LIKE..HOLY 7%#@ THIS IS JUST FABULOUS AND HE POURS EVERYTHING INTO IT..JUST AWESOME,,
Ace ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
Pure, raw emotion !! This is what todays music lacks, honored to have lived in this musical era !
Goosebumps. Miss the legend still.
It's not a song! It's just a monument of modern art!! For ever and ever !
Aural art 👂🏻
The guitar's wailing and David Bowie's singing about unattained dream. beautiful
Saw this concert at Madison Square, NYC when I was 17... I remember thinking how gorgeous, how superb, no need for Broadway up the street...!
Same age as me! Different country! 😁
He is one of the very few artist that had the WOW factor -simply stunning and breathtaking 🎉🎉❤❤
He was everybody’s hero , one of a kind , a once in a lifetime artist.
He’s with Major Tom on his never ending space odyssey……
RIP David Bowie ……
Possibly my favourite rendition of "Heroes", that Isolar II band is something else!
THIS is DAVID!!! This is eternal.-
This song never fails to send chills down my spine.
Me too!! One of the most powerful songs EVER written and performed!
Sheer genius. True greatness.
I was blessed to catch this tour in mid April 1978 at the Arie Crown in Chicago. To this day, the best concert I've ever seen, hands down. Bowie burned so bright.
Ditto!!
I lived only just round the corner from Earls Court so why didn't I know it was on because I had no idea? I can't believe my hero was performing so close by and I didn't even know it! That makes me feel terrible even 26 years later!!!
Err… 46 years ago :)
When everything was majestic
It's amazing just how far ahead of everybody else he was musically.
I feel he was in his world 🌎 He dared to be his imagination.
Nacho described as 'video genius' on DB Social media 💙
I love the outrageous drum runs...
Whenever I need to be inspired - I watch this performance. Bowie and his band at their very best. This is perfection.
Well nothing or no one will ever replace this Man....Sound and Vision class act RIP
Jason Donovan
Incredible backing licks (and drumming) by all players! This is one of the slowest versions of Heroes there is, and I think it makes the song deeper, more suspenseful, and forces the music fills between words to be better. Too many live shows "rush" songs, hype them up for rock effect but spoil the innate groove. This version is sublime in all ways musically.
Seen the Great Man in Glasgow at around this time his stage presence was awesome I was 18 years old now 63
Best version of Heroes. Soulful and melancholic!! Genius!
Christ! I was there! Makes me feel old. God bless you David
The one and only Bowie. Thanks for the film!
I remember hearing Starman for the first time, when I was at school. Bowie became a hero.
Watching in 2022 💕
The most intense and breathtakingly beautiful live performance of the magnificent "Heroes" I have ever had the pleasure of seeing....and that includes Live Aid...
YES TOTALLY JUST THE BEST ..AND LIVE AID WAS FANTASTIC..
Live in Verona, in 2010: ua-cam.com/video/wSX9F6ETTDQ/v-deo.html
David is, has been, and will always be my true hero .. may the earth be light to you ..
I was there, the first and the first time I saw him ,it was a monumental evening and one I will never forget.
I love his voice so much, but I especially love his voice on this song.
A beautifully remixed live performance made possible by David’s almost miraculous singing. His live skills made him a joy in the studio, virtually always one complete take, so the engineer better be on their game.
My favourite Bowie song. Often makes me cry. Can listen to it over and over and over and over and over.................
I was there!
Maurice Kinn, owner of New Musical Express gave me a couple of tickets for the show.
I’ll always remember it. R.I.P Maurice.
Greatness personified .
Which young girl or boy cannot be touched hardly by this song. The tunes ars so deeply touching the heart, and have so much hope inside as well. Poetry does the rest .. I loved it when I was teenager and still love it-.
❤
My new favorite version of Heroes. Why didn’t I listen to this before….
Have you heard this version: ua-cam.com/video/wSX9F6ETTDQ/v-deo.html ?
Fantastic!!!!
Heroes!!!!
Love you Bowie!!!😇💜💖💞👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Nacho.

I was at this concert in row 7, amazing concert.
Out of this planet! Thank you !
And over there in the dark to David’s left was a 17 year old me - the first of the best nights of my life. Miss you David, love you forever ❤
My goodness! I was stoned to this. Talk about performance!
This is a very sincere delivery. He has all the words and moves. He was into it.
Ace ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
Well said. I would agree.
It's quite a stunning performance.
I keep coming back to this song for the awesome violin and guitar combo! Has a feel good and reminiscing effect.
Certainly does ... David is so inspiring and Bowie fans so kind ... I'm glad to connect with him on my YT Channel ... its a real privilege to perform his songs.
we love you forever and always mr david bowie
Fabuleux Bowie, we miss you
Musical genius and all round wonderful person. Brilliant artist.
Ricardo, note the violin player. She accompanied him on all his live shows. You are a hero, Rick.
Isn't she absolutely brilliant. Note perfect. The violin makes the song just so extra special.
We all that saw him all though i saw him during glass spider tour were lucky 100 years from now kids will be listening to bowie like Rome what was started ended but its always a wisper forever.
seen this Glasgow 78 June 22nd my first of many bowie gigs. He was and still is AWESOME. DD ON DRUMS IS BRILLIANT
Perfect. What else can you say? A master at his peak..
I blew all my savings on tickets for all 3 nights at Earls Court.
After the first night I bodged together a fake press pass and bluffed my way down the front with my camera. Got some great shots and thoroughly enjoyed all 3 gigs.
Wow! Do you still have these photos?
Love to see the photos David. I was a little later in seeing him. Milton Keynes 83. Just loved the man. All the best Dean
..man do i miss david bowie!
I was there, remember it like it was yesterday. R.I.P. David
I remember jamming to this song one hot, steamy night in the summer of 1985 when I was 25 and dating a professional ballerina. We were rocketing down the Parkway towards Mt. Vernon with the moon reflecting off the still waters of the Potomac to our left. It was early morning, nearly 2AM....Tina had gotten off work from her part-time gig as a bartender in Old Towne, Alexandria and we had the whole of the night to ourselves, to the dreams of things that might one day come. I remember her face, illuminated by the dull incandescent glow of the dashboard, looking at me, listening to this song, her eyes and lips filled with passion....I knew that this song made her see me in an entirely different light from how she had seen other boyfriends. The music connected our hearts and souls.
Happy birthday, David Robert Jones.
I saw this concert when it came to Cleveland, two months earlier in April 1978. I’ll never forget it. Bowie was transformative. Two generations of my family later…still think he is the best, and with good reason. His Berlin period and work with Brian Eno is still not fully appreciated. He changed or challenged so many things. Rock on!
The coolest man to have ever lived
this must have been how Bowie was in the studio. If you compare his albums with live performances, the studio vocals are always so much more tasteful and subtle. Live he always seemed self conscious, as if he felt the need to perform for the crowd in gratuitous ways. "Silly", as Iman once called him. In this live performance, there doesn't seem any distraction from being live and it is overwhelming to see him at his best as a pure vocalist. it's mind bending.
And I.. I'm so pissed He's gone. Impossible to watch without crying my heart out. Love him 4ever&ever ThX Nacho you're the best
Superior & Superbe ... I hope my YT Bowie songs keeps the legend alive ... so cool.
So ein genialer Künstler, der sehr fehlt. Er wäre im Januar 69 Jahre geworden. Aussergewöhnliche Stimme und schöne ewige Erinnerungen♥️🖤 WIR SIND ALLE HELDEN 👍
This is iconic! I was born in 1991 but my dream up until 2016 was to see Bowie live. There’s so much passion and beauty wrapped up in this performance. It makes me emotional.
I was lucky enough to see David Bowie in concert 19 times from 1974 to 2004. This includes a Tin Machine show at the Hollywood Palladium in December 1991. My first concert was the Diamond Dogs show at the Universal Amphitheater in September 1974, five days before my fifteenth birthday. From there I saw him in 1976- the Forum, 1978-the Forum, 1983 ( four times - the US Festival, The Forum 2x, Anaheim Stadium with Madness and the Go-Go's), 1987(with Siouxsie and the Banshees 2x-Anaheim Stadium), 1990-Dodger Stadium, 1995- the Forum with Nine Inch Nails, 1997- Universal Amphitheater, 2002-Irvine Meadows, 2004( five times- 4 with Macy Gray and one with the Polyphonic Spree- Wiltern Theater 2x, Shrine Auditorium 2x, and the Anaheim Pond. The Pond show was his last time in SoCal. Since his death, not a day goes by when I do not have a memory of at least one of these nights I sat in the audience watching him and his bands performing. He was a brilliant man. We won't see one like him again.
Incredibly fortunate for you!❤
This has to be the definitive version of this song. The violin kills it!
Awesome
Thank you for keeping me alive David
Unbeatable version. Just gold.
