    Brian does a stunning job on the vocal, ironically, as he was in poor shape during these years. And from the same MIU album, Woncha Come Out Tonight, is another of a stellar vocal. There's actual a few charms from this record, and a couple of duds, but for the most part it's underrated.

    Al Jardine said it best in the RS article. Brian is in orbit around Jupiter or someplace, and when he decides to come down to earth, he brings us something like this. Or not. It is what Brian decides to do, and his skills are still intact. He can still sing, and probably could hit some of the high notes, but he chooses not to.

      Unfortunately, all three Wilson brothers were suffering from substance abuse during this period - Brian sliding back down after the first firing of Landy, Dennis never getting the real help he needed, and Carl fighting his substance and alcohol demons.

      @@ms8596 Yes, Carl hit bottom in Australia just a month or so after MIU was recorded. Apparently Brian was okay with relocating to a college campus in Iowa in February to record the album, but Carl and Dennis were not pleased. Mike thought it would be good to get all three of the Wilsons away from any illegal substance temptations for a while. This was around the time when the Wilsons started doing heroin. Dennis looks happy in this video, but he and Carl were both unhappy campers.

    What a beautiful and very candid look at my absolutely favorite band, The Beach Boys. I don't recall ever having seen this video clip before and, to me, it says volumes about each of the boys and what they have evolved into by this time in their oh so very storied career. Seeing Brian taking part in the playing of this song and not just the arranging, looks so melancholy. Carl and Al appear as though they are the prime shaper's of this arrangement. Seeing Denny looking happy yet serious about his contribution to this production is so promising. If I didn't already know how his story would eventually play out I'd be lead to think that he was happy and healthy and looking forward to a long and meaningful life as a cornerstone of The Brothers Wilson and The Beach Boys in general. Viewing the man with this feeling, yet knowing full well what life had in store for his tortured soul brings sadness to my heart. Thank you Daniel for posting this rare gem which brings such real and "recent feeling" emotions to the forefront of my mind. This is such a positive contribution to The Beach Boys saga that this, at least to me, feels as if the viewer is right there in the studio with them all. PS, Since I'm not sure what Mike was trying to achieve here it's just better to let it be without tainting an already poignant and touching portrait of the band which I have loved since I bought my first record album in the summer of 1963. I didn't intend to go on at this length but once started emotions just kind of took over. I humbly hope that you read this Daniel. Thank You!

    In 1978, it's a small miracle that there was in fact, a Beach Boys, at all. So great were divisions in the group, yet to hear The MIU album, you'd never know. Both Carl & DW spent very little time in the middle of Iowa in the winter, yet Mike, Al, & BW DID manage it, & somehow, pulled off this album, a 10,000% improvement over the disasters of " Big Ones ", & " Love You ". -------This song, with BW actually pulling off a pleasant mid-baritone , along with " Pitter Patter", & my favorite, " Sweet Sunday Kinda Love " , proved to be a joy to listen to. I KNOW ------critics hated & savaged it ; well, what do any of them know ?????? This is, IMO, THE most underrated album by The Boys, ever. And I love it ! ------MJL, 76 y/o

    It's when I 1st heard this, that I really began to fully understand the frustration the Boys, & Carl especially, felt when dealing with BW in those days--The late 70's. Any time he wanted to, BW could still--despite cigarettes, cocaine & booze--still sing gorgeously. He decided when & where he wanted to do it, & it drove the guys wild. Carl especially, was hurt by his Brother's total lack of responsibility for anything, while he, Carl, carried it for The Group. Grogeous song. Wolfsky9

    After 71-72 and the Holland project things pretty well went into decline. The BB were brilliant on tour in 1972. A few gems surfaced occasionally afterwards, but generally it was the solo albums that produced quality, especially Pacific Ocean Blue. A stand-out album by Dennis.and much later the Brian Wilson album. Of course the release of Smile and Brian resurfacing on tour brought quality, while others in the band ensured the BB's just became a 'tribute' band. This video shows the slow decline of the BB.

      Unfortunately, the success of Endless Summer in '74 had a lot to do with that. The oldies ratcheted up to the top again, and the Mike Love "don't f*ck with the formula" won out, relegating them to has beens on FM radio (in the 70's, where things mattered) and just a glorified oldies act from the late 70s onward.

The song is weak but lyrically does maintain a consistant metaphor. It's just OK as a song. I hate the background voices 'Matchpoint Matchpoint'; but historically this was pivotal point for the group I think. About the only thing I will probably ever agree with johnston about is when he said 'something like', 'It sounds like a bunch of old tired men.

If you look up the history of this album, Carl and Dennis didn't want anything to do with it because Brian wasn't producing it and Mike demanded it be recorded at MIU. Is this the video that was actually shot for this song? It just looks so weird?

    Was this technically the first Beach Boys music video?

      Not sure if it's the first one, but Sloop John B certainly predates this one

    This was a present surprise from Brian after the hideous vocals of the previous two albums. The metaphor of the lyrics is a bit forced, but the melody is nice. A unfairly bashed piece.

    Where the original clip is taken from?

    • @callmedeb1399
      @callmedeb1399 6 років тому +4

      From an 1977 french Tv SHow called On Ne Manque Pas D'air (The episode is 1 January 1977), the original clip has a narration, interviews with Mike and Dennis, and a showing of the Anaheim Stadium clip of It's Ok. In the footage of Brian in the bass they are actually performing Surfer Girl, in the shots of Dennis they are performing Love is A woman, The clouseups of Carl they are actually dialoguing and in the clouseups of Mike they are performing airplane. the original clip is 8:23 long. the best source doesn't have the Jimmy Logo,

    Brian looks a bit scared, bless him. Dennis looks very cool here! Not such a bad song, but I think this may be the worst album from the boys

      Summer in Paradise is worse. By several country miles. It's arguably one of the worst albums ever recorded by anyone.
