I know this is an older video but I just picked up the Ultimate Edition and this is one of the clearest most thorough instructionals I've seen, thank you.
Hello, what a very useful video. Minute @23:19 I am not sure what you mean using blue cards token against ice enemy. What is really happening with that, where I can find that rule. Thx!
Thanks a lot, I've been learning how to play for a couple of days and if it wasnt for your videos I''d give up all hope to get my head round this combat thing.
Hey there Dr D! :o). Recently bought Mage Knight because of you! Really great game, and I really enjoy your channel. During one of your videos you mentioned Lost Legions being your preferred mode of play. I would love to see you live stream or post some videos on it. Thanks so much!
Excellent video thanks, by far the best I've seen for explaining the basic combat. Can't wait for Mage Knight to come back in stock so I can put this into practice.
Thanks for this, looking forward to the rest. I do have a question regarding the Hag Damage starting at @16:15. If you are unable to block, do I understand it is as you take 3 standard damage, plus aditionally (because of poison) you take a wound into your hand AND discard Pile (i.e. 2 wounds). So the way I'm hearing you is 3 physical damage + 2 wound cards (1 hand, 1 discard pile)
Thank you very much for these ids, at first i wasnt enjoying this game and then earlier today something switched on and now i cant stop playing(solo by the way). These vids havve helped me get some things right and its very helpful, has made the game funner as well. I hope the new expansion coming out will have some new solo intricacies or deeper gameplay, ill get it regardless but heres hoping, apologies for atrocious spelling, keyboard is dying and im typing from across the room, can barely see the text.
Also its worth mentioning city freezers unit with 3 frost damage + fast - you actually need 3x2x2=12 generic block to prevent their attack, pretty nasty stuff. Also any damage is rounded DOWN, but its pretty obvious. Also some skill of heroes reduce damage of certain type (like Braevelar or Krang), but only when you recive it actually, not when you block it or assign to units, which is pretty lame (thats why i homerule it just to be attack reduction, at least it will work more than single time in your whole game).
Thanks for these MK videos! However, @11:12 you mention playing cards sideways to add to the ranged attack. I didn't think sideways cards add to range/siege attacks, only regular. Can you clarify?
That is not a ranged attack phase! You can play ranged either first, during ranged attack, OR as regular attack during the attack phase. At that point you can play cards sideways.
Hi there. Thanks for the great videos. I am new to MK and still learning, so I appreciate these videos a lot. I have a question (and understand this won't be relevant till I get to the expansions) about the 'elusive' ability. At 27:56, you say that the base armour value doesn't normally get used, only in the attack phase, or if you successfully block their attack. To clarify, if I were to attack with range (as they are not fortified) would I use their base armour? And the second part, only 'if you successfully block their attack', this is confusing to me as I would presume you'd use the 'elusive' armour then not the base. So if I am hearing correctly, you only use the 'elusive' armour amount if you can't kill them? This seems confusing to me. Do you mind expanding on this for me, please. Thanks ahead of time.
If you were to attack with range, you'd use the higher value armor. Ranged attack phase is a different phase (phase 1) from just the attack phase (phase 3). Also, "successfully block ALL attacks" is what the rules say-this baby likes to pop up in GROUP attacks where it's more difficult to block everything.
I'm waiting for delivery of Mage Knight so these videos are very helpful to get a head start as this very clear and concise. I do have one question. Just say I attack a tower or dungeon in the night and unable to perform a range attack, successful against defense with no wounds but do not have enough to kill the enemy, what happens next? Does the turn end permitting me to draw cards or does this battle continue until one party is defeated?
So Ive played the solo scenario 3 times so far, Conquer 2 cities. So, my question is this: is it normal to just get immediately wiped out by the first city you reach (level 5)??? I had 1 white token and 2 purple tokens. The 3 playthroughs were easy enough, got a wound, healed a wound, killed a bunch of tokens, but once I got to the city..... wiped, all 3 times. I didnt have enough attack to kill even 1 of the tokens while all 3 tokens dealt me 16 points of damage. Even if I killed one of the tokens Id be wiped. Any thoughts or advice?? Im feeling like Ive wasted my time and money :-( I want to enjoy the game, if im missing something then please help me out. Thank you. And then the card showed icons for fire +2, ice +2 and fire+ice +1 and a dark face with a +7 or something. I dont get it. If the card is making the tokens stronger then the combat is impossible to win, ever. Please help me out here guys.
@@BeyondSolitaire I bet you are a great teacher Liz! The way you explain is so calm, focused and compassionate I feel. I'm a 42 year old learning Mage Knight lol, and I feel understood 💡 I had an easier time learning On Mars than understanding all aspects of Mage Knight combat
I appreciate that@@BeyondSolitaire☀️ For me the question is how mathematical or, no pun intended, cumbersome it all becomes. Not to forget to add double block (swift), double attack (brutal) or elusive for example, keeping in mind and adding modifications by location or other enemies possibly. I hope this doesn't outweigh the theme
I just don't understand people having any big problems with Mage Knight. It was my 2nd board game (Hero Quest back in the 90's was my first if you don't count Sorry, Monopoly etc) and it was easy to understand.
Please keep this series going. Would love to see more MK as well, just getting into it and this content is super helpful.
I know this is an older video but I just picked up the Ultimate Edition and this is one of the clearest most thorough instructionals I've seen, thank you.
Enjoy! I am really looking forward to the upcoming expansion and want to go back to MK for an extended time this year. :)
Great explanations of combat thanks
Excellent video. Thank you!
Some of the clearest instructions I have come across... thank you :)

An awesome explanation. Good job!
Loving this! I'm returning to mage knight after a year of not playing it, and this is a wonderful way to relearn the rules. Great job!
Thanks a lot, I've been learning how to play for a couple of days and if it wasnt for your videos I''d give up all hope to get my head round this combat thing.
Awesome, thanks Liz! Just playing First Reconnaissance and got confused on different fire, ice attacks etc. This is a great help. Back into battle! 🗡🛡

There will be an entirely separate video about damage/wounds, do not read into this video for that!
Had the box set in my drawer for 3 years and finally getting around to it! You could not have made this at a better time!
Swift is clearly an arrow with wing great vid
Its funny, after a month or so inside everyone is playing Mage Knight!
I have been meaning to do it forever, why not now? :D
Haha I'm planning my next solo conquest tomorrow 3rd time this fortnight
This is brilliant. Thank you very much for this.
Excellent job Liz. Let's get this back to #1 :) One tiny note. Maybe let people know they can't use cards sideways for ranged or sieged attacks.
I would never have such a dastardly ulterior motive. ;)

Thanks for this video. I got this today as am early bday present. I'm ready to dive in!
Great job!
Thank you this is really helpful and goes through things in a very logical and structured way cheers and looking forward to your next video
what do you do with an enemy token you cant actually kill? does it just stay on the board where it is? id assume it does though i could be wrong
Super excited for this series!

If you don't finish an enemy off, you just withdraw and have a chance to try again next turn.

Oh!! The monster disappears after the orc summoner’s attack phase! Doh
Mage knight vs Gloomhaven? Which one I should go for in your opinion?
It is pretty simple, what do you prefer camping (GH) or scenario base(MK)?
Both are great but I like Mage Knight better
@@mindartis4081 unfortunately its out of print :(
in the other hand I got gloomhaven :)
I love your videos
have you ever played gloomhaven?
Thanks for the video. Imho, the Boardgamegeek-website is also a very good resource for Mage Knight (and any boardgame).
BOOM. Does anyone deconstruct and teach complex games as well Dr. D? I say no!
Do you still work as a teacher?
Yep! School year is winding down, then it’s summer school.

Honestly, if you're soloing it... it won't really mess up your fun if you mess up the occasional detail. ;)
lol, the swift icon is a crossbow thingie... makes sense no ? An umbrella xD This ain't Mary Poppins.
BleepingRelics Disagree. Mary Poppins is terrifyingly powerful and would be a great Mage Knight!
@@BeyondSolitaire I guess you are right.
@@BleepingRelics I agree MP would make a great MK lol, and also that icon is probably wings to represent speed not a crossbow... :)

It's not that difficult but it takes time to get used to all the rules and exceptions.
You do not have to understand, just accept it. People are different, not everyone is as brilliant as you
:)
