I disagree, this was the only video that managed to make me understand the logic behind this wound system... To divide and round up just made no sense to me, felt like I had to remember a random formula for a random rule
Thank you for these excellent videos! It’s obvious you are a teacher. Your exposition is clear, you carefully increase complexity once basics are in place and always summarize ideas before moving on. I hope you are a math teacher because the damage - armor then repeat calculation is a good example showing division as repeated subtraction.
Ricky Royal gave you a shout out at the end of his latest series, that was nice! Combat! OH MY GOD, it almost turned me off the game because it's so complicated, but, there's nothing else like it so I had to just sit down and learn it, without the help of these videos that players have now. So a job well done once again!
Between watching your videos and Ricky’s current play through, I’m getting the itch to get Mage Knight out again. Been a couple years. Thanks for the great videos. They’re a great brush up on the rules for me.
Amazing walkthrough, tips, and guide. It was really easy to grasp in the sequence you have provided by watching the Combat video and this video separately.
These video are so helpful. Thank you (late to the party but getting into mage knight) Got a question to see if I understand the rules. Say I get knocked out but my units destroy the enemy and cause me to get enough xp to level up increasing hand size. I would then (unconsciously) level up and the next turn draw that extra card to new hand size (assume not another wound), I can rest (discard everything) and only miss one turn?
I was doing damage the subtraction way since I started playing. But I since changed to counting up in increments of my armor values up until its >= to the damage I take (2... 4..., so 2 wounds in the case of the 3 damage orcs). Just seems slightly less taxing on the brain, and you need every ounce of brain fluid to get through these games.
At around the 1:00 mark, shouldn't Arethea been attacked by 6 because of the "Swiftness"" symbol on the right side? Using the division method, 6/2=3. Or did I miss something?
Swiftness means you have to block double their attack value to block successfully, their damage doesn't get doubled though. What you're saying would apply to the "brutal" effect (red skull icon), where unblocked enemies deal double their damage value.
One question, could the target of a heal card be more than one? For example, the card tranquility powered up with a green crystal could heal 2 wounds, could I heal 1 from the MK and 1 from a unit level 1?

Great video! I have question - at 8:10 you explain how Guardian golems get 1 wound. I thought that physical resistance halve attack. So in my mind it was like 6/2 = 3 . So Golems block all attack without wound :)
Physical resistance doesn't half the attack, it reduces the attack by their armor amount first for free, then damage is applied. (6 - 3 =3, so the golems take 3). This is confusing because physical resistance on an enemy DOES half your attacks on them. Another example: Say a unit had physical resistance and 7 armour, if they get hit for 8 damage they would reduce that amount by 7 for free first but then they would get wounded by the remaining 1 damage.
Confused. So no matter what your armor is, if you dont block, you will always take a damage? Even if you have Armor 4 versus Attack 1, for example??? Seems illogical.
Yes your example is true, your armor is basically the amount the enemy's damage is reduced after they hit you, to see if they then wound you again. It's great because if you have 6 armor, you can take a big 6 damage attack and only take 1 wound. It is pretty unintuitive though.
I'm still confused with the "negative damage". I'm trying to wrap my head around the concept on that term. Although the division math makes it simpler, I still can't seem to understand what negative damage is.
what if you have a guardian golem that gets attacked by hydra (2-2-2 ttack). can its physical resistance soak each and every attack or the golem soak only 1 attack and the other 2 will go to you?
Yeah took me 3 months after buying to get courage to go for it, but have and really enjoying it. I realised that I shouldn’t worry if I get some rules wrong, I did but learnt a lot after that first play and feel way more confident now. I’d say - Just go for it!
Eek..it’s amazing how wrong I’ve been for all these years ....thanks for the correction(s)....will have to punish myself with another play... Are you doing cities and Volkare?
Damage divided by armor rounded up is so much easier... the other method gives me migraine ^^

I'm actually a Latin teacher who HATED math! :P
As a newbie to Mage Knight, your videos are extremely helpful and clarifying. Thanks for putting these lessons together.

"Battle panties" Almost spit coffee on my screen. :) Another great lesson.
Divide Damage by armor and take as many wound cards. Then: If the remainder is 0, take NO additional wound card. If not, take one.
What if the amount is a negative?
Excellent explanation! You make it simple. Thank you very much.

Yessssss!!!!
This is the most confusing topic in the whole game.
Wow! This was so helpful! I was doing more things wrong in my dozen plus plays than I care to admit, ahem....
Good work Dr. D ! :)
Thanks! Means a lot coming from you. :)
Thanks for doing these videos Dr. D! They have been very helpful to my wife and I trying to learn this game. 😀
Best mage knight teacher
Great explanation!
i love this serie lessons ,apple for the teacher
Thanks for these interesting and clarifying videos!!!
Great tutorial

have a copy on back order now :)
Oh no the damage is going through 😱

Could you do a video on Volkare?
I definitely plan to at some point! The question is, do I just keep going with MK right now, or do people need a breather? lol

You should ask the Mage Knight Facebook group! I don't have everything to hand at just this moment, but someone in there 100% will.
The combat is so extremely convoluted and confusing that I have yet to play my MKUE in the four years I’ve owned it

At some point! Might take a bit of a breather.
Wounds vs Damage is confusing.
