Ah, the humiliation of stalling the car in front of the spectators at the drag strip.
I did it once, but it turned out the new cold air intake I had installed shook loose when I dumped the clutch and there was no air moving past the mass air meter. The car limped down the track running a 30 second 1/4th the whole time I thought I had destroyed my car with a crappy burnout. Haha
If you are new at the drag strip, go as a spectator or to support a friend who is racing first and pay attention to the procedures. Watch the starter give instructions to the cars next in line rather than the cars down track. When you go to race, ask questions of the guys who know what they are doing. Most are really nice people and are willing to share knowledge when they are waiting around in the staging lanes.
The heel toe method is by far the easiest for me ... try it out

It all depends on the car guys. Some super cars don't have a long had pedal and if you have been in a variety of cars to burn out with , this guys method works every time if car is capable. Heel and toe only works if the pedals are lined up and long enougg
My corvettes don't have a long enough pedal either to heel and toe. But all I gotta do is stomp the throttle and she spins lol

Basically what I'm saying is this dude his method is good for every car. The heel and toe method , only works if the pedals will allow you to gracefully touch both pedals with one foot. Impossible on my vette
Starting in 2nd gear is also beneficial with low gears (high numerically). It allows faster tire speed without over reviving the engine
I had 67 4 speed mustang in high school and do a burn out in parking lots after school. Lol
One of my 1st mods back in highschool was a line lock. My Dad wasn't too happy when it came in the mail so he said "go ahead I'm not helping you". Got it in! Smoked them hide's. Fox body's funny with the drives front brake line coming off the bottom of the master cylinder. Later in life I would just purchase 2 solenoids and place them at the end of the hard lines between the brake hose. Simple, hidden, and easier I thought
Actually, when doing a burnout with an automatic, you should not hold the brake down as hard as you can, just hard enough to keep the car from moving.

Heel toe is by far the easiest way to initiate it. Not near as must shock to the driveline that way

Please people DO NOT spin the tires in the water box. You just roll through. Spinning the tire in the box will get water everywhere and drip back down on the tire specially with a treaded tire. Non drag radial street tire skip the water box all together. Go around whenever possible. Also if you have gears in the car. Use 2nd gear for the burnout. You will not have enough wheel speed otherwise for a good burnout. With a street tire 1st is fine. It's a very short burnout with a normal street tire so 2nd isn't required.
It's not very hard like he said with a little practice. If you need to, to get the hang of it don't be afraid to really pop the clutch. Make sure you jump on the brake and gas all at the same time.
Line lock does make it much easier. Although the line lock doesn't engage the brake by the way. If you just hit the button it won't do anything unless you hold the brake first. Otherwise your just clicking the solenoid which does nothing without brake fluid going to the brake caliper first.

Pulled up to a banquet where they had valet they looked inside my car & asked if I could park my own car...I thought it's a requirement to drive stick to do valet but go figure....at least my car wasn't touched.....beautiful fox by the way
I installed a line lock on my fox. I don't use it often. But I love letting her rip and let it roll out till she runs out of legs
I use my right foot for the gas and break and my left for clutch control just in case I run out of gear. Though if you're a size 10 10 and a half it is pretty difficult to fit your foot on both in a fox
I am a size 11, so its a little cramped down there lol
I'm 15 and my dad never taught me but I have a 1971 GMC I have built and I'm going to go race it in a couple of weeks because our local dragstrip is having a test and tune event but the cops will be there and you get the chance to race a cop down the quarter mile. So I'm needing to figure out how to do a burnout in my truck and this video helped a lot

i just happened on this video and ive been doing burn outs with clutches for over 20 years and for some reason the clutch on my 2018 mustang gt pp2 6 speed has hands down the weirdest clutch engagement ive ever felt
Line lock here, but prior to that I was a heel toe guy. I don’t know if it’s common knowledge but do the burnout in 2nd gear, you’ll get a lot more wheel speed.

wow i love the comments , i have been doing the heal toe method on my 1991 lx since 1992 to present and i do not press the brake pedal hard to activate the rear breaks , that is why i use heal toe method because i can pre determine the amount of pressure i put on the pedal before i pop that clutch ...furthermore i have a question to everyone , during a race do you keep the gas pedal planted during shifts or does your right foot go on and off the pedal during a shift , my personal preferance is keeping that gas pedal planted from green light to finnish line with crisp n fast power shifts ...back in the late 90,s i entered a huge event called the 5 liter shootout and i used my methods in that event and ended up winning the event that had 500 plus mustangs 5.0L in it ...ive raced many cars in my days and i still find the fox body to be the best street strip car ever built

Hello I have question. I hade remove the heat shield from under my hood it was so old u think it be ok to leave it with nothing or will it get way to hot and hurt paint?

If on a street tire, not a drag radial or a slick, but a straight up STREET tire, stay out of the water all together, period. Go around the water box and maybe a quick spin to clean the rocks off, but no smoke, no heat, no brake stand and again, NO WATER. Then pull to the first beam and pre stage and wait for your opponent to do the same before you fully stage. Oh yeah, don't forget to turn your ac off. Thanks.
Rubber compound on street tires just becomes greasy, not like a soft compound drag radial or slick that gets sticky. Never go through the water with a street tire because the tread just picks up the water and drags it out on to the track for everyone else to have to drive through. Burnout is for tires designed for racing.
@@tommyfrombama4834 Ditto here except for the quick spin. If you never get a street tire greasy they wont pick up little rocks. I let the air out to 22 psi and check tire tread for boulders. I go on last yellow light with a slow clutch foot to let her slip just a tad.

You burn up brakes stick or auto if you don't have a line lock. Never had line locks but never had trouble doing a burnout in either.

Never had a line lock on either of my Mustang GTs. I always did it the way you showed. Only problem is that I found out that third gear gave out real quick on the T-5 if you did to many burnouts.

Doing the burnout in 2nd gear is also better helps heat up the tire faster.

once it's spinning.. execute a fast shift to 2nd..by releasing gas a bit but heeling the brake...

My dad drove a Mustang just like that one when he and my mom started dating, she hated that car because it was "loud & stinky."
(Ok i wrote this before actually watch it, i was thinking daily driving normal cars.)
Anyone had a moped or just a tiny bit of feel should be able to do a burnout.
On the other hand thats really stupid to "teach" on YT as it kills the car very fast
(all moving parts that abruptly in a chain grabs or hook up with each other) will
tear apart and in best of cases ONLY but always garantueed wear).
For those like to take care of their cars:
1: The xp'ienced sensible dude dont race full tit first gear rev it up and pop the clutch,
he let the clutch do its job and when rolling on the gear starts throttling.
2: is the following process, 2nd gear! Rather not overrev 1st gear but even so take the
time to let 2nd slip in smoothly and not noobtrash it (the standard 1n2 gear synchproblem
is mostly caused by no feel/no patience. All in all you may lose 1-2sec to 60 but ill take
that and a fresh car anyday.
Revmeet both gear up n down.. the day you manage it almost 100% semless you come a
long way in "worthy carowner".

Ohh another way u can do it Is to spray double d 40 on the wheel and pull the hand break up and floor it
HUH? No one that is a REAL drag racer DRIVES THRU the waterbox with anything less than drag skinnys on the front. That is IF your track is set up for that, the good ones are set up like that. You drive around the waterbox. The track in the vid had waaaaay too much water put out, but COULD let you drive around and back into it.

All spinning in the waterbox does is sling more water up on the fenderwell and it WILL drip down on the track and tire after the burnout.
Stick burnout
IF you are on DR or slicks with skinnys in the front:
1. Check rear tire pressure in staging lanes, late as possible if it's hot or temps are changing.
2. Drive thru the waterbox and put the rear tires just past the edge of the waterbox. Good track will have a guy to tell you with a closed fist or just open your door.
3. Place trans in 2nd gear............first gear burnouts are useless,,,,,,,unless you are on street tires and just need to clean them off. Caleb is right about a smokey burnout is not needed on street tire and will make you lose traction.
4.Rev the engine and be AGGRESSIVE with letting out the clutch. In one fluid motion, move foot from the clutch to the brakes and ease into the brake. It's ok if you move a couple of feet.
5. Drag radials don't need as much of a burn as slicks for the most part. Be consistent in the amount of burn you do to keep tire pressure in the same range after the burn from run to run.
6. When it's time to end the burn, you ease off the brakes first and then begin to ease off the throttle once the car starts moving forward. You don't want to suddenly come off the throttle and let the tire grip suddenly. It puts too much stress on the drivetrain.
7. No "chirpies" or testing traction before you get to the staging line.
This is the proper way to do a burnout. Doing it the same way every time will make you a consistant racer and you can then make changes to your suspension and see the results of the changes and NOT the results of changes of your burnout.
I races many years in ModMotor in FunFord Weekend. It taught me to be VERY methodical in every single aspect of my time at the track. This includes everything done in the pits.
I hope this helps and Caleb is right. It does take seat time to get this done the right way and become comfortable in the process. Now, I only get a bit uncomfortable when testing a new combo or driving someone's car.
Sorry for the long post, but is the cornerstone of drag racing. If you don't do this correct, your drag racing won't be the best you can do.
Obvious disclaimer: do not repeat these steps on a FWD and 4WD cars (AWD depends on the car).

I’m not a big fan of this technique to be honest. It’s not the safest or smartest for a new person to the track. Driving through the water box normally and then starting a burnout with brakes applied is s much better bet. Right Heel on the brake , right toes modulating throttle. It’s a much simpler technique especially for guys with men sized feet. Lol
