Trying To Become A Sub 20 Man - Battersea Park - Parkrun - Journey Of Lee

- Come along for another full send and a big push as I try to become a sub 20 man. After a few failed attempts, I've increased my training and I'm not leaving anything on the table this time. Im at the fastest place in the UK, yes it's Battersea Park. Can I actually do it this time. Follow Journey of Lee to find out.
Buzzing for you, dudey! Finally dipped under myself the other week (19:57) after some intense misses. Good stuff! 💪
The word finally!! , that’s all I kept saying on the way back to the hotel 🤣🤣🤣 congrats mate as well I no the feeling and it’s a massive relief to get this done. I do think there is some kind of mental block as well about the sub20🤔🤔 all the best 👊👊
Congratulations on breaking 20 minutes. It is a huge achievement and I have no doubt that your times will continue to improve. The confidence & motivation of running sub 20 will spur you on. However despite the arguments you have outlined below in response to other comments I think you need to accept the official time of 19:56 as your 5K pb for now. I ran a parkrun with a young lad a few weeks ago and he finished just behind me in 19:03 but on his strava he was claiming a 5K PB of 18:19! There's a short section on the 2 loop course where we go under trees and lose GPS signal so the parkrun distance always registers at about 5.03km to 5.05km but some reason his watch estimated the run at 5.22km giving him a massive PB which was over 40 seconds out. Looking at your Battersea run the most that was lost 2-3 seconds at the start so I don't think it fair to claim 19:41 when weaving is an accepted part of racing. On the opposite side of things my official all time parkrun PB is on a course that measured 4.95km both times I ran it. In fact running 19:30 on that course is the equivalent of running 20:00 on my local parkrun that measures 100 metres longer on strava. I suppose at the end of the day the times that anyone can really stand over are the chip times in races.
Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻 I’ll be keeping the 19:41 though 🤣 if it was a chip time I’d use that 10000% but my aim was to run 5k in under 20 mins it’s not about the park run and I ran 5k in 19:41 and I ran the parkrun in 19:56 at 5.07km . I’ll smash 19 mins very soon so it will all be irrelevant 🤣🤣🤣 I get with that other kid it was his gps playing up, but at Battersea it’s really common to lose time in traffic so I was always using my watch time as there is no chip👍🏻 thanks for watching and all the best for 2025 👊👊
PS the difference between my times are 15 seconds and I covered an extra 0.7 km which is about bang on 👍🏻
19:56 exactly same as my parkrun pb. Well done Lee 👏👏👏Gotta take the 19:56 tho - official time is always the real time. Like in a marathon / half / 10k etc
Cheers pal 👍🏻👍🏻 I would agree on a race mate you always take the chip time but parkrun doesn’t have a chip system so you take the watch time aslong as you start it when you cross the line. It’s only really an issue at Battersea as you can wait 20 seconds to cross the start line and cover quite a bit more than the 5k when passing traffic. Gun times are pretty irrelevant in my opinion , chip time always overrules them🤣🤣 your not taking my 19:41 🤪🤪 it’s on Strava so it counts 💪 but yeh 99% of the time I use the official chip but at the very start I said I was using the watch time as I knew I would either cover more than 5k in the parkrun or get held up at the start - thanks for watching again mate - all the best for 2025 👊👊
Also congrats on a stunning time and PB - huge respect 💪
Well done 🎉. Thanks for visiting us at Battersea Parkrun.
Well done to our volunteers ❤
It was an absolute pleasure 👍🏻 and well pointed out - excellent job my the volunteers 👍🏻❤I do normally say thanks when I go past but there wasn’t much talking I could do on this one but I did give a thumbs up as I went past a few of them🤣🤣 all the best for 2025 and hopefully I’ll be back soon 👊👊
Awesome run and video Lee. Your pre-run chat was spot on. Confident about knowing you had it in you, and facing up to what you had to do. Fantastic to have your very special run immortalised on video. I found your channel early 2024 when I was doing my own sub-20 training. The first video I watched you were doing 800m intervals I think. Then you got injured. Great to see you've come back and achieved this awesome goal 👍
Hi Pete - Really appreciate that mate 👍🏻👍🏻 and thanks for supporting me along the way and watching. It’s a tough old road to sub20 but it was worth it. I will never ever forget this run ever and I’m so glad it’s all recorded 😃As I’ve said to others it’s what you do in training that counts and it couldn’t have gone any better on the day but that was down to my training .all the very best for 2025 👊👊
@Journeyoflee Cheers mate. I'm going to be rebalancing between cycling and running for 2025 I think as 2024 was very running dominated. Have a great 2025 yourself.
@@newbarker523 sounds like a great plan , you have to make it fun as well - follow your passions mate 👊👊
Congratulations! I watched a couple of your other videos chasing sub-20 and was pleasantly surprised to see this pop up today.
Very happy for you mate! Great work!

Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻 really appreciate that 🏃♂️💪 I remember cracking sub21 and it was tough but anything is possible . It’s what you do in training that matters the most - just remember that 👊👊
@Journeyoflee I find it hard fitting in the relevant training work 40+ hours a week and being a dad and husband lol 😒
@@Ruffnreddyrunnervery true mate I feel your pain 💪💪 I’m a postie aswell 😢 so I walk minimum of half a marathon a day at work so some days my legs dont even wanna work 🤣🤣 but to be honest I’ve got used to it. Too kind 👊 genuinely appreciate that mate 👊👊 all the best
Well done mate, congratulations, I did the half marathon at Battersea park on sat after your parkrun, watch was all over the place , 👏 👊
Cheers pal 👍🏻👍🏻 and congrats on the half aswell - brilliant distance the half 💪 yeh I’d say it’s the only downside to Battersea , the watch will run longer due either the overtaking or overrunning off line , then if your doing the parkrun you could lose 10 seconds at the start easily just crossing the line. The start won’t be an issue at a proper race as you will be chip timed 🤔 all the best for 2025 👊👊
@ and to you mate , your flying now 🏃♂️ 💨 all the best Lee 👊
Absolutely quality vid mate.... Wat an effort that was.. Sub 20 hell yea!!!!!
Cheers mate 👍🏻 had to give it everything on this one . If you get chance to go there either for a race or a parkrun just go it’s brilliant 👊👊

Hi Lee
Happy new year.
Nice run.
It’s all about the pacing.
Battersea gave you a few good markers to pick up on.
Next goal 6min mile pace that was always the decent club runner standard.
Steve
Hi Steve 👍🏻 happy new year my mate 👊 yes you are 100% correct the pacing is the key. I could have probably done 19:30 on this day but hindsight is a wonderful thing but I had paced a sub20 and didn’t wanna risk anything mid race. Never get greedy 🤣💪 I’m still up for a track session as well mate I haven’t forgot but will probably be march / April I’ll give you a heads up though 👊👊
@Journeyoflee
Lee
You did the right thing.
Get the time in the bag.
March/April would be perfect to sharpen up for some fast road races.
Donny 5k for instance.
Weather will be problematic for track over next month or two.
Still aiming to get there so you are welcome anytime.

Well done Lee. Smashed it. Mental strength from 3k to 4k.Squeeze the pace on each 100m from 4.2 k out. Don't empty to early.

Genuinely appreciate that mate 👍🏻 best run of my life , I’m so happy with how I did everything in that race . You know what it’s like when everything just clicks 💪 thanks for watching 👊👊
Yes Lee🎉🎉🎉!!! I've been waiting for this video to drop since I spoke to you on Strava the other day. It looked like adrenaline from the whole experience carried you through. And as a bonus, you were sub-20 on the official parkrun timing 👏👏👏. Sub-19 is calling 🤞
Cheers pal 👍🏻👍🏻 defo some adrenaline carrying me around💪💪also I was busting for a wee aswell I think that helped 🤣🤣 yep got the sub 20 in both the 5k and the official parkrun. I did wanna get both but I thought the official parkrun one would be tough and super close as you can lose so much time at the start just waiting to cross the line + you can end up going well over 5k with overtaking etc but just managed both 🏃♂️💪👍🏻🎉🎉 thanks for watching mate and all the best for 2025 👊👊👊
Congratulations!🎊🎉
Cheers pal 👍🏻👍🏻
Brilliant Lee! Smashed it 🎉
Cheers Scott mate 👍🏻 i really recommend this place , brilliant place to run 🏃♂️ - all the best for 2025 👊
Never in doubt, well done lad 💪
😎😎💪💪👊👊appreciate that mate
Buzzing for you mate. Bin following the past few months and saw how close you've got. Ive had a similar situation with 2 parkruns recently. If it's an official chip time race I go off the chip cause it's when we cross the line. Wheras parkrun especially busy ones can be 10-15 seconds before you cross the start point so I start watch when I cross but if am going for an all out I go close to the front anyway. Heaton park Saturday with my daughter. Lost around 30 secs with an extra long finish funnel costing a further 10-15s...we went off watch ⌚️ ...anyway it's not all about times 🤪 oj what am i talking about. of course it is 😂... congrats on the sub 20. I know from recent experience just how much it means 💪 onwards and upwards 🙌🙌
Hahaha it’s always about the times mate 🤣🤣 means a lot 👊 yeh always go with the chip time mate . Races will always have a gun and chip times. Run for Britain etc always use the chip time. However parkrun is a gun time. I was always going to use my watch and just get the time for the 5k but it was a double bonus to get the actual parkrun done in sub20 as well - keep at it mate 👊👊👊
Dylan here - smashed it mate!! When I saw you flying round my corner I knew it was on. You had that look in your eyes!! Hope you had a fantastic relaxing weekend, take it in this week and give me a buzz when you want sub 19 or sub 40 💪
Cheers mate 👍🏻 it absolutely spurred me on, nothing like somebody cheering you on. I got a few shout outs a Battersea which was brilliant it really made me push💪💪. Had a brilliant weekend in London , I’ll be back for an official race this year absolutely no doubt. Also your tips about the start of the race / briefing etc was invaluable I think I started on about the 3rd or 4th row 💪💪 sub 40 would be amazing mate , anytime I’m ever down I’ll give you a nudge pal - all the very best for 2025 and massive congrats on your amazing half marathon PB ….just super fast 👊👊👊🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️💨💨💨
Yes mate!!!!!!!💪🏻welcome to the club. You nailed it and you looked fairly comfortable. All the training has paid off. Fully deserved pal, congrats 👏🏻
Cheers lad 👊👊 it’s nice here in the sub20 club 🤪🤪 . To be honest mate I could of gone faster but I didn’t no that until the end I just wanted to pace it for sub20 and not blow up - it’s mad what can happen when everything clicks 💪💪
You paced it perfectly. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but you ran that to perfection in terms of your goal. Going forward your parkruns will be sub 20 on a regular basis as long as you keep doing what you’re doing. I’m
Currently nursing a double soleus injury(on each leg). Pushed my double session too hard this weekend and developed tendinitis, so I’m out for 2 weeks at least and my first half marathon race of the year is in 5 weeks time. Will almost need to start from scratch once I’m fit again. Frustrating.
@@drdesign4890mate that is the only problem with running the bloody injuries . But once you’ve had a big one you sort of know what you can get away with and what you can’t👍🏻 yeh the pacing was on point mate but it had to be 💪💪 cheers for your support mate - means a lot 👊👊
Great run Lee. I've done a few evening 5K races in Battersea Park but haven't tried the parkrun yet which hasn't been going long but will give it a go soon. A lovely, flat, fast course but the numbers who turn up at the parkrun make it a little tricky and you have to start a bit quicker than is ideal to get a good position. Battersea Park probably my favourite place to run in London.
100% agree with all that mate. I’d say if you’re going to do the parkrun there then just use the time off your watch and only start the timing on your watch when you cross the start line . Some people lose 10-15 seconds at the start - i will be running there again this year but it will be an official race 💪💪 all the very best mate 👊👊

Not ashamed to say I got a bit emotional there mate. I was willing you all the way. Yessssss! Absolutely epic performance and so deserved with all your effort and training. Sensational run buddy. Superstar 🏆
Mate ❤💪💪 I know what you mean running can be emotional when you know how hard it can be. When I watched back the end of the video I wasn’t happy how I ended it really, I was on cloud 9 and it hadn’t sunk in. I was going to record a bit of chit chat on how I felt the day after and add that in but I just didn’t have time. I was a totally different person that night and the next day once it had sank it . It took me nearly 4 years from going sub30 to getting sub20 I’m not a natural runner at all , well I wasn’t anyway. I always found it hard and difficult and I set myself this challenge nearly 4 years ago and now I’ve done 👍🏻💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪 thanks for all your support mate 👊👊👊
Yes mate! Great video once again. Honestly chuffed for you and great reliving that last kilometer push together. I was a bit concerned you might have been losing time when I saw you coming back towards me but not a chance, you had it all sorted and paced it perfectly! 👍
Hi mate 👍🏻👍🏻 great to meet you and honestly how you appeared at that exact time I just don’t no. It was abit like you was supposed to be there 🤔like a super pacer just flown in for my last km🤣🤣 my slowest km was the 4th at 3:58 then in comes Ian what a guy 🏃♂️💪💨💨 then we boxed off a 5th km is 3:50 . You can hear us talking in the last km together but I think some of my voice over spoke over us but I think people got the jist . Honestly mate you came at the right time , think we helped each other out in that last km …..legend mate 👊👊👊👊👊

@Journeyofleekeep them coming for 2025 👊
Well done on the PB! You've put a lot of work in for that. Personally really don't agree with taking a GPS time and distance which is imapcted by all the other people around, looped courses etc, as opposed to a measured course (if you're going round people that's all part of 'racing'). Sure, it's gun time at parkrun but everyone has the same situation and all races used to be gun time. We've all had dodgy gps situations too and particularly apple watch users. I don't know many other runners that would take their watch time, dodgy gps could make a next milestone seem so hard if you think you're closer than you are!! Also if your watch had only measured 4.98 I wonder if you'd be taking the parkrun time and calling it a 5k 😉
😂😂Cheers mate , I do appreciate the comment . I always take the parkrun time or the chip time ……normally , but this wasn’t how fast can I run Battersea Parkrun . It was how fast can I run 5k. If the parkrun wasn’t on I was still going to do a 5k in Battersea park and you have no option but to use your watch. I do get it about GPS but I was using the ultra 2. It’s probably one of the most accurate watches out there. Either way I smashed sub20👊 parkrun time or not 😊but if this was done in training you take the watch time . I get what you said about running round people and that’s racing ….. but the whole point of this was how fast can I run 5k nothing to do with the parkrun and i absolutely ran way over 5k. I do get some people will have this view and most of the time I’d agree but on 2 or 3 loop courses your watch will give you the best time for the distance - all the very best and thanks for watching 👊👊
Brilliant Lee, well done, massive effort. Inspirational. Looking forward to 2025 vids.😎
Cheers Rob 👍🏻 it’s been a long time coming this , just shows what you do in training really matters - all the best mate 👊👊

But at 3k I knew how I felt and I knew I just needed to keep going -your right it’s the best feeling ever 👊👊 sub19 will be coming soon and I’ve not 100% decided on the next big goal but it will be a banger 💪💪💪🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️ all the best pal 👊👊
well done ;-) definitely seems you had some more in it
Cheers pal 👍🏻 there was more to come but I didn’t realise til the end. Didn’t wanna get greedy and risk blowing up so just kept at around 19:45 pace - we will turn it up even more next time 👊👊
Very well done Lee!
Really Robert 👍🏻👍🏻 really appreciate it pal 👊👊
Well done! That didn't take too much of 2025 to box off. whats next? Sub 19? 😄
Hahahaha 🤣🤣 no it’s didn’t mate, but it took all of 2024 trying 🤪 we ain’t stopping now sub19 will be next , but it will have to wait a short while ive got a few races booked it an other distances so time to break some more PB’s first 🏃♂️🏃♂️💪💪
well done! listen to all them parrots..
Cheers mate 👍🏻 I’m still in cloud 9 🏃♂️…..but parrots 🦜?? I don’t follow 🤔🤔🤔
Is that the secret, down a bottle of lucazade beforehand?
It's great to see success 🎉
Hahaha mate I should be getting paid from lucazade I’ve got a bottle in my hand on every race video. It’s part of my pre race routine I always have half a bottle about an hour before a race and it’s always done me ok. I had a full bottle this time as I had no where to keep it - could be the secret formula 🤣🤣🤣all the best mate 👊👊
Well done! Note, GPS is NOT accurate. Any experienced runner know that. Nearly always long. Many others measured 5.02 I see on Strava. So most will figure that the point where your watch measured 5 km is actually short of 5 km on the racing line for Battersea Parkrun. Have fun, enjoy the running. I agree with those that think sub 19 is possible.....
Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻 appreciate that 👊 and sub 19 will be coming💪💪With regard to GPS it also depends on your watch. But I 100% called this at the start I was always using my watch time for this one , I knew I would either get held up at the start or run longer overtaking people. I’ve seen tons of people from marathons where people cover loads more from over taking traffic etc I’d always go with the chip time for a race but there isn’t one here (only gun)and I could also tell I’d run longer from the amount of traffic I had to go around. Them that measured 5.02 will have not dodged as much traffic or found a better route round , there was a lot on mine between 5.02 - 5.10 🤔.Normally my watch tracks pretty much every race at bang on the distance - all the best for 2025 👊👊
Running a sub 20 at that age has to be easy
Not for me mate took me years to get to this level - all the best
The automatic subtitles are not familiar with your accent, apparently, because they just write nonsense ! What is it, this English that you speak, in the end ? Just kidding, trying to glimpse more and more of that non-academy speaking, as I'm planning a holiday in Northumberland next summer
🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant , sorry my friend👍🏻🏃♂️. In England we have lots of very different accents. I’m from Yorkshire right in the centre of England we speak the Queens English 😂😂 all the best 👊👊
Git onnnnnnmnnn😊
🤣🤣🤪🤪😎😎 mate , special thanks to you 💪💪 honestly you’ve been a legend 👊👊
@marcwaddingham3091 🤣🤣🤪🤪😎😎 mate , special thanks to you 💪💪 honestly you’ve been a legend 👊👊

That was all very nice mate, but could you breathe a bit more quietly next time? 😅
😂
😂😂😂😂only you mate , only you would say that 🤪🤪🤪 cheers pal 👊👊 you keep putting one foot in front of the other , this will be you soon lad 👊👊
Parkrun results is your proper time not watch time, but well done for breaking sub 20
Normally I would agree but I wasn’t really going for the parkrun I was just running 5k - the sub20 in 5k . The parkrun is a gun time and isn’t very accurate at Battersea , you can lose so much time at the start and you end up running well more than 5k . Today was just about the 5k . Imagine doing a 5k effort in the middle of a marathon you would just use your watch time , it was the same here I was always just running to 5k , I started my watch when I crossed the start line not when they said go- thanks though 👍🏻🏃♂️all the best 👊👊
Parkrun isn’t a chip time so not true. Well done Lee top effort - hard work pays off!
@@msmudgacheers 👍🏻👍🏻 appreciate it - hard work does pay off 🤣💪💪 it’s a weight off my shoulders now 👊👊
Brilliant running 😉🫡🏃🏽♂️ congratulations on the sub 20 , didn't take you to long into 2025 to get it 😉
Cheers mate 👍🏻👍🏻 no it didn’t but it took all of bloody 2024 trying 🤪🤣🤣🤣 all the best pal 👊👊
