  • Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: Adam and Eve sinned even before they ate the forbidden fruit. As soon as they asked themselves why they should obey God, they had sinned in their hearts. Sin is when we remove God as the ultimate authority and enthrone ourselves in God’s place. By elevating ourselves at the expense of God, God’s good world became broken. Yet, the story of Adam and Eve does not end with despair but with hope. God, in the midst of his judgment, promises that a day will come when one of Eve’s children will utterly annihilate the power of sin.

Jean Milhollin, only you can turn away from Him. He will never turn away from you. I pray you are still here and if not, I pray you’re with our Father.

God bless you. I also fear losing my salvation, as do many of us. It comes and goes. I've been told it's a trick of the devil to make us feel hopeless. That sounds like something the devil would want, not God. I'm grateful for the peace you have Jean. I'm a new believer. I hope to grow into a faith like you've expressed. The Lord has already begun transforming me, and I see what God has done for many mature Christians, and how much they love Jesus. I thank God for your testimony Jean, and I pray that God would give me a heart to love and to know Christ more each day. I turn away from the destruction of sin, and towards Christ. May I truly come to know and accept, in all of my heart, that Jesus cancelled the debt of my sin, because God so loved us.

    God bless you brother Keller.
My spiritual mind has just been blown by a what feels to be a passage I've read a hundred times, but now--thanks to your inspired words--I feel as though I've heard it all for the very first time.

    Absolutely amazing!
Though I think the sermon doesn’t end where the audio stops. It would be great to finish listening to it.

My teaching has been over the years...As God pronounces judgment on Eve for her part of the transgression in Eden, He says, “Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you” (Genesis 3:16). This verse causes some puzzlement. It would seem that a woman desiring her husband would be a good thing, and not a curse.
The Hebrew phrase in question does not include a verb and is literally translated “toward your husband your desire.” Since this judgment is predictive, the future tense verb “will be” is added for clarity: “Your desire will be for your husband.” The most basic and straightforward understanding of this verse is that woman and man would now have ongoing conflict. In contrast to the ideal conditions in the Garden of Eden and the harmony between Adam and Eve, their relationship, from that point on, would include a power struggle. The NLT translation makes it more evident: “You will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” source "got a question"

"You will surely die"....Because I said so is a human idea. It is true in God case but God's reason for keeping us for sin is not baseless. I mean it saids it right there....you will die. Of course he is talking about spiritual death.
In any case, the reason i feel the "because I said so" is a important error in teaching is because this type of thinking assumes that obeying God has no "natural" benefits. Don't commit adultery because you will destory yourself and your family and that is WHY i said so. I didn't just randomly pick a law for you to follow out of tin air. These laws have actually benefits if you follow them.

I know this was a year ago, but I think I agree with you. But I also agree with Tim. If I’m able to do so anyways. I do truly believe God wants us to obey, not just because it benefits us, but because we love Him. Loving Christ is the (or at least SHOULD be) the motivation for obedience.

Yes, God loves us, all of his commands for us are for our own good. I can use my reasoning power, which he gave me, to see the "benefits" of his commands, and when my own reasoning power fails, I trust him "because He said so", because he loves us So Much. Of course I do rebel, and do not trust sometimes, my wicked heart is selfish and deceitful.
