You cannot get rid of sin simply by noticing and admitting that we have a certain sin. The only way for a christian to get rid of their sinful behaviors, is through the Holy Spirit. When you pray and allow the Holy Spirit to help you change, and make that sin unappealing to you, when the Holy Spirit gives you the strength to abstain from your addiction to the sin, only then can you begin to change for the better. It's impossible to do it on your own.
+iaJENKA This is true. I believe the Holy Spirit is at all times present in a believer. Tim Keller assumes the Holy Spirit to be present. Understanding is also necessary in our growing in Him.
Yes, but just like salvation, our first step is to acknowledge that we are sinners and separated from God. I believe what Pastor Keller is saying, is that if a christian is in denial about his/her sin, they have to first agree with God that the thing that the Holy Spirit is putting His finger on is a sin and also want God to change them.

If modern churches would teach that the REAL reason we should love God ( because we love Him, not because of what he does for Me ), worship would be transformed. Alas, listen to the lyrics of much of what is called "contemporary Christian music" and you will hear a focus on the transactional: I love you Lord because... of what you can and will do for Me. We should be singing that we love you, Lord, for what you HAVE ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED for me, and FOR WHO YOU TRULY ARE.
True, feeling sorry about your sin because of the consequences and repenting your sin because you are being convicted by the Holy Spirit aren't the same.

The bible says it the love of Christ that brings repentance. Most believers do not know the depth of His love. When you love someone generally you do not want to displease them.
The promiscuous guy was not unsaved, he was just in the process of sanctification. We're not saved once we're transformed from top to bottom, we're transformed from to bottom as a result of our salvation. All Christians are still out here, killing idols by the help of the Spirit, and he hadn't killed that one yet.
Does all sin require punishment or does all sin require sacrifice? Do we want to stop sinning just because we don't want to grieve the One we love, or do we also have a growing, all-consuming desire to be closer to God, to have more of Him, to be sanctified, to be holy as He is holy, to be transformed into His image?

Jesus is the only one who can get the stain out! Lord pour out your Spirits on those seeking to know you and fill them with desire to love you more than for what you do.
What is the sermon he's referring to that he says you need to understand what he meant in that sermon to better understand this sermon...? Why Is this not one of the 106 comments /questions on this video
I'm sorry, I love Keller and he made a lot of great points here BUT this whole idea of "convicting yourself" does not jive with scriptural truth. "it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." Phil 2:13
He makes some good points. Mainly we do need to get rid of the root and really repent deeply and find our identity in Jesus. However there are a few things I think that should be looked at and thought about. 1 The disciples did not rejoice that the demons were subject to their name but to Jesus’ name. Yet he did make a good point about not finding our salvation in those. 2 however the demons kept being subject to the authority of Jesus’ name. That never changed. 3. It seems unfair for a wife to say “do you love me?” And just expect I love you because I love you. Honestly did she pick the guy just because she loves him for no reason? No. They picked each other for certain reasons. However in God’s love we stay committed to their value in Christ. They are made in God’s image and even if they change and start treating us wrong we are still called to love them for their sake.
23:50 learn how to convict yourself with your joys... Vision of God, of His Love, becomes love for Him, and I don't want to betray that, i want to please Him. Before just ...trying harder. For vanity, for control-by-moral-superiority, moral status....
I can't understand what he said (32:39-48) "I am only hear to say don't be afraid to get back into the muck...use grace on it...the more you see your sin, the more his grace and that's how you change deeply."What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Romans 6:1-3
+Rijo Jacob Abraham I understood it as 'don't be afraid to recognise all your sin - no matter how bad, then apply the grace of the gospel (like he did with the earlier examples of pride, irritability, anxiety). the more you recognise/admit your sin, the more you're able to see the depths of his grace. And that's the key to change' (1John 1:8-9; Tit. 2:11-12). Hope that helps.
I think he meant, 'don't be afraid to get back into the muck of examining and dealing with and confessing your own sin.' It is a dirty and painful business, looking into the patterns and process of your own sinful nature, but there are times in every Christian's life that it has to be done. This is how we cooperate with the sanctification that began at the Cross. He is NOT urging that we get back into the 'muck' of sinful attitudes and behavior.
I think you are right on in most of your talk in regard to loving the Lord and in all of your examples of heartfelt agape love. Then an interesting thing happens following your examples of the sexually promiscuous man that changed at the bible study and in fact you felt that he never really changeover instead exchanged one misbehavior for another. The fact that you use that example is interesting in itself and that it becomes the point of going off track into error. Anyway then you really lose the whole accurate theme of loving God and go to human effort to kill the sin. I say that if we continue on fully in God's path that he has given us to love so much that the Holy Spirit is in fact our Redeamer by in filling us with love so great that sin.loses its power. The Holy Spirit has been given to us for this purpose. It is not our Herculean effort that brings us fully and deeply to God. Rather it is God Himself, the I Am that brings us to Him.

12:48 Could anyone please direct me to these first two lectures that Dr. Keller talks about?

Jesus is the only one who can get the stain out! Lord pour out your Spirits on those seeking to know you and fill them with desire to love you more than for what you do.
Remove the stains!
Amen
Amen
Volume is very low on this video
Can someone please tell me what are the first two videos in this series? That he referred to several times?
Here is link to the other talk at that Retreat! ua-cam.com/video/-N_178ASBg0/v-deo.html
@@NewCanaanSoc Thank you!
what if you have all of those bad things?
One of those is reason enough to run to Jesus. Thankful for His gracious provision.
So what if your answer is “because you love me”?
He does love us. So good.
Love the 卧虎藏龙 reference, God bless his soul
Amen
What is the sermon he's referring to that he says you need to understand what he meant in that sermon to better understand this sermon...? Why Is this not one of the 106 comments /questions on this video
I'm sorry, I love Keller and he made a lot of great points here BUT this whole idea of "convicting yourself" does not jive with scriptural truth. "it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." Phil 2:13
Hello J VK,
Can you comment again, do you still have the same understanding. Or you have a change of view.
Wow.... Neither have you.
(alllegory dude, pure allegory)
Thanks for being a thoughtful consumer of the content. Such a gift.
Sin is a horrible master.
23:50 learn how to convict yourself with your joys... Vision of God, of His Love, becomes love for Him, and I don't want to betray that, i want to please Him. Before just ...trying harder. For vanity, for control-by-moral-superiority, moral status....
This sermon destroyed me in a very good way.
Rite On! ;)
24:30 sins. I hear my own in the list. Talk to others about them, and to Him. Be convicted with joy?!? :-)
29:45 'but that doesn't mean I'm stained.'
Only 3 minutes into the video, I keep hearing him misquote Scripture. That concerns me about listening to more of this teaching/preaching.
My concerns were not confirmed. After listening to the full message, I must say, I'm glad I did.
@@timothyknapp7574 Thanks for expressing your humility and honesty.
This message doesn't need anything added to it.

Is the second talk he gave on UA-cam? Because I can't find it.
lovingsingleton
I think the second talk is
“An Identity That Can Handle Either Success or Failure” UA-cam.
Who were thoe 70 disciples? What happenet to them? We have no idea.
