I have one micholitziana. It has been here over a month and has not died. I call that an accomplishment for me. It has put out two new leaves but it lost the ones it had when I got it. Hoping it will be gorgeous one day. 😊
Alocasia Micholitziana and Frydeks are a double edged swords aren’t they?! I had one that got gigantic and became my highest maintenance plant. It needs to be rotated every other day or else it will lean and topple over. I had to spray it twice a week because I’m paranoid about pests. But they are a statement piece for sure! Yours looks phenomenal!
I have an Alocasia heterophylla 'dragon's breath' that has been living in the same pot for like 5 years now and I've been cutting back the roots whenever I decide to repot it in some new fresh soil medium inside the same 10-ish pot size haha. Interestingly enough, it never caused much stress to it because as soon as I'm done, give it water and food, my heterophylla just continues to grow as if I never disturbed its roots. It's by far my favorite alocasia and success child out of all my plants with how long and healthy the leaves are. Hoping to do the same with my other current plants. BIG & LUSH is my goal right now.
Yesterday I was very lucky! I was in my local hardware store and they have a big section with houseplants. The last year they changed a lot and now they have different varieties of rare houseplants. The last time I got an Alocasia Tandurusa for 15€ and yesterday I got a small Alocasia variegated Frydek for 20€ with awesome variegation! I was so happy and needed a little time to pick one out. They got a bunch of them.
That is awesome to see those kinds of plants at a hardware store. Glad you were able to snag those! I would have been tempted to get another Frydek for sure haha.
My Frydek was having so many issues dropping leaves & was rotting a bit in soil. I rerooted it in stratum then purchased pon from you & it’s given me a leaf and is healthy as can be! I can see now why you’re so in love with pon 😊 Thanks for influencing me!
It’s always a joy to watch your videos! They are so calming! finally catching up on all your vids. recently! Feels good to just sit back! I’m getting super inspired to report some of my alocasias now😍 I need some corms!! Hope you, hubby, & kitties are doing well after the crazy storm!🫶🏻
I do root trims now and so far they all have been fine. I don’t want to go to big 11 inches is to big for me, but will see. Love your Alocasia’s I hope mine grow up to be so pretty.
Hi Melissa, I have some of these pots and I use their Hand Pump to remove the water from the reservoir without having to removing the plug in the bottom of the pot.
Hey Melissa! Finally catching up on all of your new videos, lol. Your Frydek is looking amazing! I can't wait until mine is that big! I'm up to five big leaves, so we're getting there! I can DM you for more details, but let me know if you want custom supports for your stems. Mine have little engraved monstera in the middle. I have them listed on Palm Street but not Etsy yet. Mine have a hole in the middle and include an acrylic stem to keep the support steady. If you need some custom ones for more leaves, let me know!
Hey just btw a lot of alocasia are invasive species in the south eastern US. If do you want to grow outside, I'd keep it in a pot to prevent corms remaining in the soil long term, and cut off any flowers so you don't end up with seeds a bird could distribute. Unfortunately many houseplants end up disrupting local eco systems after being planted outside so it has to be done carefully
You and Sydney Plant Guy got me spending way too much on these plants😂😂 I just bought a small display case for my alocasia, fits a motorcycle helmet. She's been with me for three years now and STILL won't grow more than two leafs at a time. And to boot, they're heccin small 😤🙃 I'm interested to see what this new setup will provide. I've got a grow light on top and a small cup holder sized humidifier puffing away inside. Wish me much luck👍
😂😂😂 same! These two got me turning my whole house into a jungle! Help me! I’ve put myself in plant jail. Not even allowed to go “look” at plants anymore.
Melissa, at first I thought it was a regular planter and thought wow that's a nice planter. I want one. Then you showed the whole thing and it's a "self-watering" planter which I still don't have an opinion in regards to if I like them or not but I do not like that the inner pot is always smaller than the overall pot. So the pot you're using is not big but considering that this specific plant didn't have long or wide roots it works just fine. That's a problem with relying on self-watering pots is that you won't get the confidence or the skill of learning your watering level skills for each plant because of the dependency and relying on the gauge. If you do use actual big pots (tall ones) there are ways to fill up the inside pot space with other materials besides soil/substrate or bring up the plant height. One option of filling up the pot is re-purposing/re-using styrofoam and as your plant and roots grow you can repot with removing some or all of the styrofoam. There are other materials besides styrofoam but I so it doesn't add too much weight (packing peanuts is good too). Now if you do want to add weight, which I like to have weight pots outdoors because of the rain/windy conditions but also so pets or squirrel 🐿️ 🦝 don't easily knock pots down then bricks is a choice.
I never grow any plant . But saw your channel and get inspired by you!!!yeah😊 I both succulent and flowers are growing from cutting. It’s gonna be a month now. My snake plant is almost gone but I’m trying to grow it back .maybe? Finger cross!!! I bought arrowhead plant and leave are getting yellow. What will i do? I want plants with two colors and i want to try pons. How will i order plants from you.?
Hi Melissa! I have a quick question about those plants, are they known to be more prone to getting brown spots? I have both variegated frydek and micholitziana in pon and they suddenly start to get yellow/brown spots on the edges, I’m a bit sad because I adore them! You said in this vid that you have under watered them but could it be something else? (Like fungal infection ?). Thank you so much for all your plants contents, I’ve learned so much and I fell in love with that hobby because of you 🥰 Ps: please kiss your furry friends for me ❤️
Hi there! Thank you so much! You can definitely check the roots like Jessica mentioned. You can check for pests to make sure they're not stressed. How are you feeding? I got some burning on some of the leaves because I think I over did it with fertilizer a few times. Watering inconsistencies and rot can definitely cause browning too.
Hey Melissa, enjoying your videos and learning a lot! I'm a newby to pon and have only transferred two starts to pon. So far they seem to be ok. Can you explain or direct me to a video that explains why you use fluval stratum as a transitional medium? I just ordered some hydro fertilizers to make a nutrient mix. Do you prefer to use fs as opposed to transitioning from water to pon or am I'm confused that these are two options? Thanks for helping us to develop the passion you have for growing in pon! You're plants are beautiful and thriving.
Silica! I haven't had spider mites in almost a year now. I use power SI and add it to my water each time. If you haven't researched silica definitely look it up. Spider mites have no interest in them now. 😊
Hi Melissa, love your videos! ❤️ How long does it take for your corms to sprout? I have some Frydek, Polly, and BV corms in stratum and I cannot even see a root after 3 weeks 😢
Hi there! Thank you so much ☺️ it depends.. I would say a few weeks to several weeks. They sprout faster if I peel them and keep them under more warmth. The ones I have on a heating mat sprout quicker. I use seedling trays with stratum so they get humidity too and I sit them about 6 inches or so from barrina lights.
It depends on the week lol. Sometimes I get behind in watering so they do get dry but I try not to let them completely dry out if that makes sense. I'm usually adding water once a week.
Hi Melissa hope ur well absolutely love your videos, am just getting into alocasia, out of interest can you put ur corms straight into pon ? I found 3 in my black velvet.
💚💚💚 Do you have a video on moving the baby alocasia out of Stratum into your prop mix? I just split my big micholitziana and ended up with almost 40 corms, that i obviously can't keep them all. How soon to move them and going into ambient humidity.
I first put it into pon in June of 2023. It was a mature stump already from growing it out to be pretty mature before in soil. It grew back quickly in pon though. I would say most this is about a year of regrowth 😁 It'll get there though!
Be very careful putting them outside. They are beautiful when they get big but I’ve noticed that my big alocasias like the black stem, Thai giant etc. are spider mite magnets in the yard. Just my experience but the fact that yours are velvet leaves I think they def would suffer. I’m thinking of just having to use systemic on those. Honestly, I know it sounds ridiculous but I would definitely take out the drain plug and instead of filing it up all the way just add a wick. That all I can really think of as an alternative to be able to flush. I don’t like the idea of it just staying in the black part, idk why they did that.. lol❤
I have a small micholitziana, I wonder how soon you can start looking for corms? I got a few corms from my big cucullata, they're growing fine but slowly.
Hi Melissa, great video. ❤ I have a frydek variegated in pon. It only has 3 leaves so far. It’s in a self watering container and I use silica , cal mag, . I water once a week, but sometimes it doesn’t seem to use all the water in a week. The water level doesn’t get low after a week so do you empty it and add fresh water? I’m trying to keep the watering schedule the same.( once a week) . just wondering if you have ever come across that? Thank you 😊
Hey there! good question! If the plant hasn't used all the water I usually just skip over it and check again the next time I water. I'm usually just topping off once the level gets low or it's used all of it and then flush every few weeks. If something seems wrong or off with a plant then I'll keep a mental note to investigate when I get more time. Some watering days I just power through since I have a lot to get to. I try to keep everyone on the same watering schedule but for those that don't need water yet on watering day they're usually fine until the next check.
Silica! I haven't had spider mites in almost a year now. I add it in my nutrient regimen every water. It's really made my plants more resilient against pests.
Please let me know if you got my three emails.!? Sorry, I don't mean to be excessive but that's the only way I can communicate with you. Thanks for being you and keeping us so well entertained with your beautiful plants.👍🌿🤗💛🙋
