One of my most precious memories is a road trip in Spain in the late 80's. I was driving north on an almost empty stretch of motorway not to far from Burgos. It was early in the evening and above the Pyrenees you could see the first lightning flashes of a summer afternoon thunderstorm after a long hot day on the plaines of Spain. I switched on the car radio and on some local Spanish station they started to play the Adagio from the Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by Paco de Lucia. To me that was the most "Spanish" moment I ever had, if I can call it like that. Pure magic and this music always takes me back to that moment. p.s. I still come a lot in Spain on motorbike.
Something similar happened to me when I was visiting Barcelona. Was taking in the architecture of Gaudi buildings when suddenly I started hearing this music coming from around the corner. Went to see, there was one guy sitting on the side of the walkway, with classical guitar who was just sunk deep into the music. Time kinda slowed down around him. Can never forget the first time I heard this arrangement, that too in Barca. Was akin to seeing Saturn through a telescope for the first time ngl, something words can’t explain.
It is the sound of my heart in melancholy, my soul crying for all it has lost and my hands trembling in pain. It is beautiful because it is everyman's tears.
@@limoneSl I've heard it so often and from so many guitarists and everyone thought they were unique with it... For comparison or as an example of the craftsmanship, listen to *Modern Saga* by Finnish guitarist *Joonas Widenius* here on UA-cam - or listen to *Winter solstice* by *Estas Tonne* - THAT is real art in my eyes, new and differently independent art in the area of southern/spanish music. It is a very nice song but to say it's the best of all is kinda silly since love of music and it's appreciation is subjective. This title is sensationalism.
What an experience! Even listening to this in my living room, I tear up every time. So, in the situation you mention, I think I would be happy to die there and then.
I have loved this piece for fifty years. The soloist at a Flamenco theatre near the caves in Sacra Monte, Granada played it two years ago while the dancers rested. It is so beautiful that all my family wept, and I think most of the audience with us. Only the best musicians playing great music can do that. Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory.
I’ve never heard this without the full orchestra. It stands alone beautifully. This movement is about the death of his young son. The pain comes through in the music. So beautiful. You did a great job capturing the spirit of the piece.
I think this sounds better than the version with orchestra. The guitar soloist in that version puts in too many fills and extra notes instead of letting the previous notes just fall. It detracts from the melody. I would like to hear a version with just an oboe and guitar (Marco playing of course).
not to take away anything from Marco or his excellent version but if you like a non-orchestral version check out - "Ruben Seroussi en solo de guitarra Adagio de Aranjuez" Not sure if im allowed to post links but its on youtube if you search that. It is by far my favorite arrangement and version of this piece. Especially the way he plays... it is engrained in my heart.
Extremely well done. I have been playing guitar for more than 55 years and always wanted to be able to play this piece which I heard as young man while in Spain. The emotion inherent in this composition really comes alive in this variation.
Come on, pls dont say 55 y's. You can do it in less than a year. Just use the right emotion, moderate classical guitar finger style, and good acoustic guitar.
This is the best example on the internet of playing the guitar as a seamless extension of yourself. Very organic, very emotional and very perfect. Thank you!
When I visited Spain a long time ago I actually took a side trip by train to Aranjuez purely because I love this piece of music. There was a sign at the Aranjuez railway station that said that this was the first stretch of railway built in Spain but someone has since questioned this assertion.
The first time I heard this song was when I was put on hold while calling a data center site engineer, it was such a trip that as soon as I hung up I started searching in google for classical guitar songs and I eventually got to the Paco de Lucía live version. Since then it's been my favorite song along with Albinoni's Adagio, I can't choose one over the other.
I learnt this piece from you 10-years ago. Then problems came into my life and I forgot it. Coming back to your video makes me feel whole once more. Your skill and emotion makes it all look so easy, yet I know that it is not. It is what sets you apart from many others. You hold the guitar with love. As an Englishman, I now live far away from Europe due to the British stupidity of Brexit and your playing makes me so homesick. Nonetheless, I have learnt Zen and purpose of being. Rodriguez I believe held something similar. Yet I had to travel 7,000 miles away from home to find it. Thank you Marco for sharing this tutorial. Never doubt yourself. If you have done one thing in your life, it is to touch my soul and give me strength.
Thank you Marco. Beautifully sentimental. I try playing the melody often but embarrassed to say that, I, a near seventy year old, always end up tearing up but it feels so good. Like washing the soul.
Got emotional listening the first part. Your flow is immaculate. Every note is so pronounced in different lightning. Loved it. You are some kind of a hero to many people.
This is one of my favorite classical pieces, which I have listened to countless times. It is such an exquisitely beautiful piece. Thank you so much, Marco, for this wonderful tutorial!
I had the pleasure of listening to classical guitarist maestro Pablo Sainz Villegas at the City Halls in Glasgow in April ...the Adagio was part of the the complete Concierto ...delightful and have heard it many time in my travels though Spain ❤
sixty years ago, I had the album, Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis. This song was one of the songs on the album. I would listen to this song, over and over.
This piece is the true soul of Spain. Living already in the States I heard it in a nice theatre in LA and I couldn't hold my tears, it took me straight to home.
Aranjuez, lived there five years as a kid. Even then I knew the town was special and spent many an afternoon in the gardens. Listening to this pulls on my heart.
This is and most likely always will be my favorite piece for classical guitar and you did a heck of a job bringing it to life! Thank you and amazing work!
You play this so beautifully. I listened to it before, at a time when I was trying to harden myself to the pain and sadness I feel at the loss of dear friend to frontotemperal dementia. Now when I listen I experience the heartbreak in the music. You convey this beautifully when one has the ears to hear.
I love your approach to this. It brings joy to play an instrument. Just the first three notes are amazing. To play a version of this composition is very rewarding personally 🕊🌹
There seem to be many myths about the origin of this masterpiece. A quick online query reveals the otherworldly origin of the piece in Rodrigo's own words; simple and elegant. I always prefer string instruments solo to appreciate the nuances and emotion. Too many are technical players. I grew up listening to Paco de Lucia as we both aged and evolved. I have his and a Romero version. That satisfies me, but this solo version is special.
Thank you, Marco! Since my childhood, I have always said that this, the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's masterpiece, is the most profound short piece of music ever created! From MJQ with Laurindo Almeida, to Miles Davis, John Williams, and countless others, there seems to be agreement on this. I think Rodrigo would be the richest composer in history if he got even a small fraction of the monies due him from the covers of this piece! I hear it everywhere, in every genre, usually unattributed.
Beautiful Spain, Beautiful people, Beautiful music. Don’t apologize probably more than half the people watching this can’t even play. It was splendid Thank you.
I love it! So beautiful with just the basic version, so much to build on. Thank you! I am thoroughly enjoying your beautiful fingerstyle melodies taking the basic to expand and for us to add our own layers. Thank you!
Marco, your performance of this famous Rodrigo 2nd movement is breathtaking! I agree your A minor transposition is easier to play than the original B minor. It loses none of its numinous atmosphere, well, at least the way you play it here! You are a star for sharing it with us. All your videos are packed with invaluable instruction for students, at any level. You are a fantastic teacher and have helped my playing more than I can say. Thank you so much!
This is so incredible, OMG. I can't wait to learn and embody this myself. Thank you so much Marco for bringing all of this to us and opening our ears, minds, and practice to the beauty of this musical way.
Additional note: I have studied classical guitar, but I set it down due to the hours I would spend on just one piece, one phrase, so slowly see results. I have seen the original version performed by Christopher Parkening with the orchestra, and have listened to may other classical guitarist (e.g. Andres Segovia and others). I never tackled the original composition due to not being able to do just with the tremolo. Such a beautiful melody, and with this simplified arrangement I can enjoy playing this beautiful piece for my enjoyment. By lowering the key to F it opened up the basic melody to be played so openly. Thank you, Thank you! You have no idea how much I am enjoying this refreshening approach.
Correction: My reference to the tremolo was actually with a different piece called Recuerdos de la Alhambra. The Concierto de Aranjuez a beautiful composition and I was thinking that there was more tremolo in it, but mostly just beautiful Spanish chord progressions with the rapid sequence of notes that almost sounded like tremolo. Thank you so much for providing this simplified version. I will challenge myself to this version. Thank you!! Sorry for the confusion, I am an old man....LOL
Reaches into my soul....... I first heard Concierto De Aranejuez many years ago and didn't hear it again for about 40-years. When searches became available on the net and music was available. I started again to look for it but I didn't know its title and it took a few more years to run across it. Another bit of music that haunted me was a Chopin piece from 'Five Easy Pieces' and again it took many years to find out the name of the piece and the composer. With the net I can now access both with ease. Thanks for showing how to play the piece. Mucho Appreciated.
He wrote this during his pain at the loss of his son . People normally listen to this played on cornett or fugul horn. MADE Popular by the film brassed off. John Williams plays this complete piece well worth a listen . Music composed in pain gives pleasure to so many

Not many players could have done this version and made it sound like magic!!!The hardest when play complicated songs in simple chords is to make it sound good. You have to train for months as a beginner. Do you want to learn one song or start from begining as a guitarr player. In one or two year continusly playing and training you are good to play lots of songs as you progress to a good amateur, Then after this its up to you if wanna get great:) Love youre videos and that you give great lessons.
This melody is my favorite number one. You are an amazing guitarist and I do love how you explain and teach. Thank you, for sharing this part undoubtedly the most beautiful of all the composition ❤ I did always hear it with Pepe Romero on the guitar, an amazing musician
Brilliant! Marco you are amazing. I caught a demonstration of yours a long while back and from then on it was only your guitar music that i looked for. Truly you are a genius. And you have a very kind and genuine way about you that seems to transfer into your music. Grazie mille e molte benedizioni.💓🕊👋

You play beautifully, I've always tried to learn to play classical and Spanish guitar but it's hard with my health,I wish I had a patient teacher to help me it would be a dream come true to be able to play for my kid
As a freshman at the University of Puerto Rico, I would wander into the music room at the library. This was WAY before streaming, Google, IPods, or even the Walkman. I would explore different types of music I hadn’t really had exposure to. High on that list was classical, jazz, and blues. I happened to stumble across this beautiful piece of music. I was instantly fell in love with it and listen to it often, to this day.
Truly moving, I have subscribed after listening to your playing. Thank you so much for breaking it down to a more simple version. I'm trying to learn a little classical. I play for my own enjoyment and sing and play by the campfire :)
I agree with Marco. In terms of beauty and emotion I can't think of anything more beautiful than this. I don't think anyone should judge you for playing your version.
I remember hearing this music for the first time and it was dramatic as emotional. The melody is quite tragic and brings to the surface tears of appreciation.
I never in a million years thought I would be able to play something like this. Thank you Marco. My fingers are sore from playing this it is so addictingly beautiful.
So good even Chrysler used it for their Cordoba commercials in the 1970s with Ricardo Montalban. ("In rich Corinthian leather" in his silky, meliflous voice). I had never forgotten the notes, but didn't know the name so years later I bought about half a dozen CDs.of Spanish guitar music before I found it.
Classical guitar, to me, one of the most beautiful instruments ever created, I learned piano but never got into a guitar as always felt my left hand was useless on the fret board. Now at 40, hoping to learn the guitar.
Thank you very much for this excellent teaching. Since I was young, I dreamed of playing the guitar. But now in my old age, I can start playing the guitar with your teachings. 😢❤🙏

I agree with Marco. In terms of beauty and emotion I can't think of anything more beautiful than this. I don't think anyone should judge you for playing your version.
Fantastic lesson, slowly, easy way to play. Congrats ! Im trying to play it a lot of times...
2:45 Congratulation to you,I can listen to this piece countless time
Thank you for your wonderful arrangement and lesson on this magical masterpiece!!
Hey everybody. I love the guitar. I think the way Marco teaches us the one is great.
Thank you for doing this. This one piece that I always wished to play. Your rendition makes this possible.
It's definitely one of the 5 or 10 most beautiful pieces ever written. Thanks!
Agreed, the most beautiful. I’ve hired a classical guitarist to play at my wedding and he has promised to include this
I remember hearing this music for the first time and it was dramatic as emotional. The melody is quite tragic and brings to the surface tears of appreciation.
It is for sure one of this best piece of music written. Incredible. Hypnotic. Moving and melodic.
Beautiful as always ❤ I've watched all your videos and learned so much. Thankyou
You are the master! Love your arrangements for both guitar and ukulele .
I never in a million years thought I would be able to play something like this. Thank you Marco. My fingers are sore from playing this it is so addictingly beautiful.
A perfect accompaniment ,to a quite moment of reflection ,of those who are no longer with us.
Sweet sorrow .❤❤
Such a beautiful piece. You are a master of a mood.
Cavatina By John Williams ( Written by Stanley Myers ) Theme from the movie The Deer Hunter .
Gorgeous…Thankyou for sharing your talent with us all…this made my soul sing with joy to hear something so beautiful!
I love this piece , I adore it and dance to it . Ex ballet dancer but I love Flamenco
It is heavenly divine ❤
Absolutely beautiful, hands movements are poetic. Thank you
Fantastic music and a very nice lesson Mario ! Thanks
Love from India Marco. This piece rings a different bell in the heart. ❤
