Check out Camping and Wilderness Survival by Paul Tarwel, it's over 1000 pages and has 6000 illustrations in it. The books you mentioned are ok but Tarwels is amazing. It is compact enough to be thrown in a pack. Link Camping & Wilderness Survival, 2nd: The Ultimate Outdoors Book www.amazon.com/dp/0974082023/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_9uKjEbQEM90RW
Great Video clip! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard about - Mahorrla Surviving Help Method (google it)? It is a great one of a kind guide for protecting your family during a national crisis without the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy finally got amazing success with it.
The books $83 dollars right now. Do you have a new link for the SAS Survival Guide Pocket Edition? I already have the big version of this book, but I wanted to put the small one in my bug out bag.
Excellent Video clip! Apologies for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Saankramer Land Protection System (do a google search)? It is a great one of a kind guide for Learning how to survive following a crisis without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my friend Sam at very last got excellent success with it.
This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "how to survival guide" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Ryanzon Survival Genie - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.
@@herebyhereby2874 My favorites are Sas survival handbook not the pocket size one though. Also survival medicine by Joseph Alton, anything by Clint Emerson, Andrew Kain, or Rory Miller! Happy reading and surviving friend.
Your 2nd choice book "The Survival Handbook" is written by Colin Towell - a UK ex-military survival instructor who also taught survival at one of the USA military survival schools for 3 years. I now that he appreciates your kind comments about his book. Keep up the good work.
I also recommend getting survival guides that are specifically relevant to your area, most survival guides will be focused on one continent (say North America or Britain) and you will be able to glean basic info but not specific info.
A great read on the actual psychology of survival is Endurance, it's about Sir Edward Shackleton's failed expedition to the South Pole. It's an amazing feat and probably the best survival story ever told 😊
Sas security handbook by Andrew Kain, Escape the wolf and 100 deadly skills by Clint Emerson. Solid reads. Also on a different level. Facing violence, and conflict resolution...Rory Miller
Dave's bush craft 101 is my #2 favorite book. my #1 is SAS pocket detection. I put 1 in each of my family member back pack. I think it the 6th essentially tool to survive. Love your video's keep them coming
That SAS Survival Guide Pocket Edition really sounds like a great idea, not to mention if you're escaping with someone not as knowledgeable, and for some reason you can't be of help.
I like both Cody Lundins books, I thought I ordered the 101 book, but when I Got it turned out I ordered the advanced, so patiently waiting for it to come in the mail.......
With the pocket guide, you should also recommend a good pair of reading glasses. Also a SECOND PAIR of reading glasses because two is one and one is none.
Yup, the SAS book is fantastic. I have both the large version and pocket carry one. It covers pretty much everything you need to survive in different environments.
My personal favorite outdoor manual is the Handbook for Boys Fifth Edition from the late 1940's. Yes, an older version of the boy scout handbook. I found a vintage copy at the local book store for $10.
Subscribed, I enjoyed your opinion on the books. My favorites are the SAS Survival Guide Pocket Edition, Mykel Hawke's Green Beret Survival Manual and my third book isn't really a survival guide, but in my opinion it's important to have a medic based skill so Sam Coffman's "The Herbal Medic - Volume 1" which could be life saving.
Unfortunately all three books (and like the countless he did not mention) contain absolute rubbish (as well) which could get one into serious trouble and or an uncomfortable situation. They are however, great to read to pass the time (and some are on my shelf) but if one believes that they can handle the wilds after reading them better go and learn from someone in the flesh on a real trip, not in a park close to the shops, someone's backyard etc. Where can I find such place/organisation? Try a university hiking or camping/caving club for a start. Avoid the TV celebs like the plague, because first and foremost, they are exactly that, TV celebs trying to make a buck away from TV. There are many myths propagated within such books, for example: the "fire reflector wall" type structures, just to mention but one of many.
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is a great book so is Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen which is the second one in the series and the third one is Brian's return I'm reading it right now.
Yeah for sure man i read Hatchet in Middle school, its what really got me into learning survival, plants animals and ect. One of the best books ever, mainly bc everything in it was very realistic and very possible. It teaches a very important lesson, which is that it could happen to anyone and would most likely happen when unprepared and least expected. Regardless of a novel several similar events and situations has happened to others and all was very lucky. Also really describes well the human WILL to live. Ever since i read it i also no matter what, if i go out on the water or through woodlands i always make sure i have at least a full tang knife, lighter and/Or fire starter, cordage, and wearing some sleeves- jacket/sweater ect.. Also i have to mention that the book is special to me because, I grew up poor in a small town in Alabama, and for my 7th Bday my dad bought me a hatchet. One of very few gifts i ever got.
There are great book suggestions in the comment section :) Thank you Survival Know How for covering these three important books, my number one is and always has been the SAS survival guide. Hope you are doing well :)
Have you checked out ‘The complete SAS survival manual’ by Barry Davies? I have the pocket edition SAS and also the Barry Davies sas one as well. Also I’m waiting for my survival book by Dan Shelley.
Favourite books....well its Ray Mears, Mors Kochanski and John 'Lofty' Wiseman for me! But any book that gives lots of explantory illustrations for me is the best. Also 'bushcraft' and 'survival' are two different concepts but with some overlapping interests and features, so its all up for grabs really.
Another good one is Mykel Hawke's Special Forces Survival Handbook. But the most important book in my opinion would be a color wild edible plant ID book.
+Dana Faddis hey DANA: DO YOU HAVE THE NAME OF A SPACIFIC BOOK ON THE WILD EDIBLES.....LOOKING FOR A CREDIBLE COLOR PICTURE EDITION...any response would be greatly appreciated.... thanks DEB
+Deb Bloompott Here is a good one. "Edible Wild Plants: A North American Guide to Over 200 Natural Foods" by Thomas Elias & Peter Dykeman. It's about 10 to 12 bucks on Amazon. I myself don't have a color book because I'm an amateur botanist & herbalist & I've been studying wild plants for 30+ years, but I think this one will be good for you. Another good one is a book called: "Free Food & Medicine" by Markus Rothkranz.
Agreed about the size of the SAS Survival Guide, and the depth of information in it. A portable option that I've really found valuable is a basic Kindle loaded with survival titles. The very basic black and white Kindle keeps a battery charge for several weeks, and can literally carry around an entire library. I take mine backpacking, camping, and traveling with me.
Gonna state the obvious here, your kindle gets wet because your hiking and fall in a river and your swept away by the current and end up miles away down river. Now you need to survive!! kindle is a good idea and all BUT thing is that book will dry out an can be read again and if it gets real bad you can use the pages to start a fire or burn to get some warmth. The kindle just aint as valuable in a survival situation. Its for camping in a RV.
The same Dave C. said that the book sucks because the edition, the editorial cut a lot of think and also changed some subjets. He said "the book I wrote and the book they published are totally diferent, they ruined". Well...
Cody Lundin's books should be in anybody's survival library. At least or my first choice would be "98.1 Degrees, How to Keep Your Ass Alive". I do have copies of the SAS books, but Cody's books are smaller in overall size and easy to carry. And like Creek Stewart his advice is based on years of knowledge, real world scenarios and scientific facts and data. Older books like those by Bradford Angier or Tom Brown are good too, and while still relevant, like many older books they don't offer as many new tricks nor do they include modern gear. This also applies to military survival manuals which focus on using military equipment and exclude techniques or information on modern day camping, survival or everyday household items we can use. I also have many books such as the second one you had shown. The books have different authors, but all have good information, many hacks and nice photos, illustrations and drawings. They emphasize different aspect or types of survival, but all are good additions. For their resourcefulness and newer techniques and information, Creek Stewart's books are also very good choices.
Total newbie. Only Cody Lundins 98.6 degrees has all the info to stay alive in a wilderness situation. All of these books present only optimised versions of how to survive in the wild.

you dont need to know it all for survival. Just basics, shelter, fire and find and be able to drink water. Be bloody good at thoose 3 things and you will be fine. Building traps is and kill animal in them demand so much more knowledge than just making the trap. If you must have food fishing is far better. Ofcourse a nice pocket book can be nice to have along to practice some stuff in the woods.

Paul Campbell's Survival Skills of native California is not on this list? That book is very very extensive and it is factual information backed up by many Universities.
What if I'm not in California?
No one wants anyone from California to survive.....sorry.:P

+Gino Foogle I thought I was going to see Dave Canterbury here, but instead....yeah.
Yep, my thought as well. It's because the guy in the thumbnail looks like someone who you would trust for survival advice.

Tom Brown's survival guide is wilderness 101. Leave those other books at the barnes and nobles.
Knowledge guides power properly, knowledge is not power.
Why not "The Lost Ways"?
advice if you have the money get an eBook. so you can carry an entire library of knowledge with you at all time.
Are these 3 books enough for the apocalypse survival?

Bushcraft 101 has hardly pictures and makes the book almost useless. Still is a good read but you need to go elsewhere to see how its done

I can't take it! All the smart alecks who say, "use these books for tinder", need to team up with the ones who helpfully point out internet websites that have "better information".
I'll tell you what -- next hurricane that comes through, I'm going to have Canterbury and Wiseman's books handy, and I'll be kitted up with gear they recommend, and whether I bug-in to ride it out, or bug out to the woods or a Motel Six 200 miles inland from the coast, I will be laughing my guts out over the smart alecks sitting on their porch roofs, waiting for rescue, trying to tap the internet on their I-Phones when the cell towers are down.....because they know so much, so freakin' better.
Any chance I could get these chilli flavoured so I can eat the fuckers if I get lost out in the bush ! .
