    The low power at low RPM is a manufacturer thing, which can be easily changed with a flashed ECU. Honestly no one should be sitting there scrolling through settings while you're actively racing, that's a safety issue and more than likely why they did that.

Love the new 2020, but then I started hearing chatter about this throttle issue due to in large part, BMW being castrated by the EPA/DOT. I think that due to the pressure from every angle, BMW released an unfinished product. Its just NOT a significant improvement. At $22,000, its not a value, or great enough.

    If you feel there’s no power in low rpm, shouldn’t you down shift?
    I never rode a S1000RR but I know that my R1 has definitely a wider range of torque “availability” thanks to the CP4 engine. (CrossPlane).
    Still, I’m thinking that this new S1000RR ain’t solely made for track use but for road use compared to a V4S Panigale for instance (or V4R which is ridiculously expensive...)

  • @ilmostro16
    @ilmostro16 5 років тому +2

    I demo rode this bike two weeks ago (posted video) and noticed the exact same issue - no power until 8000 rpm. I was so very unimpressed with this bike. When I test rode the Panigale V4, the power was constant everywhere and never quit. Just night and day between those two bikes. Having said that, once you get the new S1000RR over 8K rpm it’s an absolute rocket. But I don’t care one bit for that sort of power band, especially for street riding.

    I think BMW's logic was that, if you shift at redline as intended, you'll be high enough in the rev band in the next gear that you won't drop back into that annoying power dip. That makes some sense and I get that it's for noise compliance, but I would have preferred that they just supply it with a stupidly large muffler or something and not mess with the power delivery, because you can't always ride a liter bike to redline on the street, but you CAN replace a muffler. I feel like that noticeable power dip would make me sad.

    I noticed you have a full exhaust system on the bike. You definitely need to flash the ECU to match everything up. Like rejetting carburetors on older bikes. Maybe other restrictions like a snorkel in the airbox? My Yamaha TZR250 had one along with restrictors in the stock pipes, which I had removed before going to aftermarket pipes. BMW have rev limiters that is removed at the 600 mile break-in service by connecting the bike to a computer. They don't want people blowing up brand new engines. This bike won the Isle of Man TT in the Superbike and Senior classes, averaging 135+ mph.

    From what I've heard the lack of mid range power is just down to the American emission laws. Here in Australia we don't have that issue and I'm pretty sure the European modern doesn't either. Aussie guys at 6tdegrees did a review on the bike and didn't have that problem.

  • @HRCfan17

    It’s unfortunate that bmw couldn’t have put in a better effort. Unfortunately we get screwed in the US and always have. Our ecu is alway more restricted than the euro version. A lot of people talking about flashes and this and that. For the price you shouldn’t have to. It should be for improvements but you shouldn’t have to seek an aftermarket for a fix. I was trying to decide between the bmw and the Aprilia 1100 factory. I’m leaning towards the Aprilia. It is a better bike out of the box it seems.

    That sucks. “Bren Tuning”. Fyi, he just came up with a tune for the 2020. I believe its $600 and removes all the complaints you had. Nomore 40-60% throttle under 9k rpm restrictions. No restrictions whatsoever. Full 100%. As for warranty, bren tuning said, “It's not impossible to find the flash but just plugging the bike into ISTA (dealer diagnostic tool), the flash will not show up. Even on warranty issues the flash will not show up. The only way BMW will kick it to a higher level for an in depth investigation of software is if they had an issue arise that would demand it. Like visible tampering to the ECU, etc. Then they would open a PUMA case and have it investigated by a BMW diagnostic specialist at that point.”
    Im not going to lie but i joined your channel due to the 2020 s1krr. Its unfortunate you gave up so easily on it but thats your choice and good luck with your future endeavors.

      I think it's good you have to stop. Could you imagine catching the mode button and altering the wrong setting. It could seriously cause you problems. I would say the suspension is running soft at the front as you are featuring the throttle through the corner and therefore it's upsetting the balance because the setting is wrong in the first place. The flat spot sucks but if you have the right gear and keep a smooth throttle you can stay on the tip of it and get straight on the power. I really like the review and I like your honesty.

    Your review was one of the most interesting videos I have seen and that is because you were able to evaluate, ride, and share your thoughts with us without throwing the bike down the track! I know, I've crashed twice at T Hill and my focus was on riding and nothing else. What you did was pretty remarkable in my opinion and I understand your frustration. From your power band description, the bike performed like an old turbo without a turbo. I wonder how BMW thought they could let this issue get by without anyone noticing? I wonder how they are responding to the chatter? Perhaps they are working like mad on a software upgrade? Furthermore, how can you race this machine under changing track conditions when you can't make on the fly adjustments? The advantage of all the electronics is kind of neutralized under those circumstances and it's certainly a PITA to have to enter the pits each time you want to make changes or simply fiddle with the suspension settings.
    I've had a number of sport bikes over the years, none have had any electronic aids, my Ducati 999R is a vintage 03 model and in my case I guess ignorance is bliss. In my world it's a hellava lot faster than me, but I love the bike. However, I've had the itch to own a more modern machine with the electronics just to have fun with the settings, truly a marvel of engineering by my standards. On the other hand, keeping it simple might be best because I would be the type to run off the track while messing with the buttons. Like flying an airplane and knowing stick and rudder, on a motorcycle I equate that to hand/ throttle control, basic principles no one should lose sight of.
    Thanks again and much appreciated.

    Everything is working correctly and how it was intended to.
    The problem is the requirements. BMW therefor had to tune it differently for the US than for the EU-markets.

    What you got in the US is the very first batch of S1000RR 2019 Models made in Spandau, Berlin. The real 2020 modelyear was just released by BMW Germany. It has one more package (carbon fibre package for 2k €) to order and one additional color "Hockenheim Silber" (silver) option. Rest stays 100% same to modelyear 2019. In Germany the "modelyear 2019" has a callback for 340 Machines as well as a software update that is done with the first service. Furthermore the ECU of the US bikes differs from the EU-software. Gear 2,3,4 and 5 are limited in throttle response. The reason is kind of dubios. Word on the forums is, that it has something to do with emissions.
    The bikes delievered in Germany now (orginally scheduled for april) are fast and brutal as hell and way faster than the old S1000RR.
    I orderd mine (fully loaded) in November 2018 and got no bike until now. It is scheduled for october ...
    I road the bike and its way better than the old s1000rr, but i can feal your anger about beeing second class customer.

Ticking noise, flat spot, delyed arrival, heavy vibration, dumb TPMS, user unfriendly display, some wheels with defects, etc.

    Is the lap time quicker? Irrespective of engine performance? Sometimes its just a smoother power delivery. Having heaps of torque feel behind the seat does not mean one is going quicker could be the suspension is tuned better? If your lap times are slower than the previous model then that sucks... had my hopes up for this bike.

    I guess I don’t understand. You are comparing your stock 2020 to your heavily modified 2015 that has countless hours of set up on it to get it just perfect for you. Set the 2015 back to stock, anything that had a tool put on it gets undone. Now which one is better out of the box so we can make an educated decision on which model to purchase?

    The 2019 Honda CB650R kind of has this same problem. between 6-8k there is this horrible dip on power (like the bike stops giving you power) that doesn't go away unless you flash/tune it (not sure what proper term is)
    Not sure if the 2019 CBR650R also shares that issue
    I test ride my friends Honda and I couldn't stand that dip on power. I can imagine you feel the same way about the BMW bike

    Shift cams are kind of a gimmick. Ideally you stay above 8,000 rpm the whole time. They change the lift but not the valve diameter so volumetric efficiency is not optimized.

  • @sexyitalian891
    @sexyitalian891 5 років тому

    That's a bit of a shame... From what I read BMW had to do that because of emissions or some sort of thing. Apparently Euro Spec bikes don't have that issue at all. Hopefully there ends up being a fix. Thankfully I won't be able to get one of these for a few years.
    Had a question though. Horsepower is slowing creeping forward for motorcycles but won't they hit a hard limit soon? Naturally aspirated motors can only output so much power before you need to increase revs or increase displacement. What's the absolute limit for a 999cc bike... 240-260 or so? Somewhere in there? That's probably with a built race motor, nothing stock, which would be super expensive and obviously wear a lot faster. What do you think will be the hard limit that N/A bikes will hit from the factory, in your opinion?
