STAND UP BASICS FOR WHITE BELTS

- Standing can be a real challenge for grapplers that never train from their feet. Having years of wrestling experience myself, I wanted to share some tips that I've found to translate quite well to Jiu Jitsu. I can't imagine how confusing Jiu Jitsu must be to those with zero prior experience. So for today's video, I'll cover some basics to help immediately elevate your stand up game. Enjoy the video. There's more on the way.
Train well,
Will

I didn't have any real grappling training before jiu jitsu and even though i didn't do wrestling in high school i still want to make stand up wrestling a part of my game.
That’s a great mindset to have. You can definitely do it 🤙🏼
My professor made sure we knew our standup. He also had a wrestling background.
You can for sure get good standup training at a bjj gym with partners willing to stand with, after a few years i can finally stand my own against wrestlers who come in on the feet
@@DaddyChetty love that 💪🏼
Thank you for sharing. You not only shared things about jijitsu, judo, and wrestling. You talked about beginning something and feeling like a failure. I needed that.
Happy to help, my friend. Keep up the good work 🤝
Butt sitter is 100% accurate. One of my buddies pulls guard every round, but he’s got great guard retention and is crazy with the leg locks.
Yessir. They can be real smooth with it.
It's me Daniel remember that comment about l want to learn BJJ do badly but l watched your video I really want to be experienced
I changed gyms from Gracie Barra, where the professor scares us away from standing up, and we always started on our butts or knees, and if we practiced wrestling or judo, we never threw each other to the ground. I never liked this approach, so after nine months I changed gyms. At the new gym, the owner used to wrestle, and he doesn't allow butt scooting or pulling guard, and I love that. We also have the only judo black belt teacher in town.
@@johnthree1611 that’s awesome! Good move on your part.
@willbrooksofficial , Thanks.
Im very close to getting my blue belt, but need more training in my stand up game. I always feel nervous when my opponent stands. Ive made it a point lately to go to wrestling classes at my gym to get confident in my takedowns. Thank you for these videos, thier gold.
I'm happy to help. Yea, definitely check out the wrestling classes. The takedown portion will be great.
This is great content. I'm in law enforcement, a white belt, and train with almost all higher level belts at my agency. This really helps with my foundational mentality going in to get folded like a lawn chair by those guys. Thank you.
Also, that shin ripper you taught when in someone's guard is fantastic. It's paid instant dividends for me as I won't get the sub with it but it usually forces them to break their guard when I get it. 🙌🙌
Happy to help, brother. Glad you got some value out of this and the other sub video. More on the way. Stay safe out there 🤙🏼
Thanks so much for making this. I’m a 50 year old white belt with a lot of back injuries. This part of the game is very intimidating to me.

I appreciate that 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’m here because my coach makes us start on our knees because he doesn’t want people to get hurt(I’ve competed 7 times and 3/4 losses were to wrestlers) I’m a 195 white belt
Glad to have you. The stand up part of Jiu Jitsu is definitely an area that deserves some training.
The injury risk is a factor, but often also the space. Our coach let us start on the knees as well, only on roll day we start on our legs. My coach has also a Judo black belt. Especially for beginners its safer to start on the knees. But we have stand up game lectures and competition preparation as well. Depending what you prefer he either let you practice your take down or your guard pull / sweep.
At my gym we do stand up drills every class first knee taps and circling then entry grips, under/over hooks then usually depending on size of class we will practice trips and takedowns

@@BikeHikeAdventures48 nice! I’m really happy to be able to help. More videos on the way!
My stance has always been a combo of the straight up and Judo stance. Simply because its a more natural/realistic fighting stance. After 30 years of muay thai I'm not crouching to a wrestlers stance to catch a punch or knee. If someone is striking its far more practical and if they do try to take me down great, I'll let my 25 years of jiu-jitsu come into play. With around 80-90% of guys I'll quickly end up on top anyway (unless the other guy is a very high level wrestler) If someone drops to their ass I simply walk away. Its the most impractical bullshit in BJJ and I refuse to let my students do it.
Im glad you put in the last part about starting on the feet being realistic. I love how guys will always start on knees or pull guard yet think in their own little mind that they are going to magically ride to the occasion in a real fight...lol
@@dragonballjiujitsu valuable perspective from a well rounded martial artist. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks for this simple explanation. I’m way older than almost everyone in my gym and I’ve avoided standup a lot because it just hurts to hit the mat at my age (50). I’ve recently begun working on it though as I’ve been trying a few competitions. No goal to be a champion or anything, just to improve, and I’d really like to win just one. I’ve done two so far and lost both in the standup game.

@@jayraymond9707 happy to help. I appreciate the comment 🤝
Great video! Something that has helped me get started with takedowns was to pick one, in my case collar drag, and just spam it. Got me used to being on my feet and collar drags are kind of pulling guard with dignity lol! You are so right that at some point you just have to commit to starting standing rather than doing the comfortable thing and pulling guard or starting on the knees. I was wondering if you had any tips to applying these basics to gi? I prefer using wrestling type movements instead of Judo since I have no background in takedowns and wrestling seems more intuitive. That said, partners setting up gi grips makes wrestling little more difficult for me.
@@ThatKenpoGuy collar drags are great. Haha pulling guard with dignity 😂 I like that. Yea, in the Gi I always address my opponents grips on my Gi the second he gets them. I don’t like to let anyone hold onto my lapels. Strip the grips and then get your own. That’s always helped me 🤙🏼
Thanks for the tips!!! very useful. The gym is sick bro, keep the good work

A wrestler's stance works also with modified pushhands, for revealing face contact. As in standing impact, a palm slap to the shoulder creates an assumed take-down. People forget how positional structure facilitates both ground striking and standing striking. With the spinal strain happening, with both shoulder strikes and hip-related nerve strikes, it is enraging to set up careless standing and ground work.
The reason to aim behind the hip with a slap, is for aesthetics-related violence people, because it draws less sympathy to the attacker than punching the nose. And with repeat attackers, leaving that handprint alters the person's tactics to do risky techniques. The phrase Lack-Of-Alert Leads-To-Hurt happens.
Since these vain people are grapplers converting External Iron Palm Tactics into grappling. Training to contact with the four-surfaces instead of aiming through, relies on the running into the strike to get deep impact. With conditioning the External Iron Palm striking, it is all repetition. Internal structure of aim through with push through, from internal systems, ends up on the ground fast.
Circling for takedown might link up with circling with palm striking system. It is the opening for the ribs and hip, might actually translate into leg and arm control for takedown.
As a purple belt who rarely starts standing, this is a timely reminder. Thank you!

That’s a great mindset to have. It’s all about improving rather than belt climbing.
