I like that little pot! As far as cats go, I found tracks as big as the palm of my insulated leather glove 12 years ago checking traps, when game and parks was telling everyone there were no cougars in our part of the state of Nebraska. I started carrying my .44 after that. Then two years later, out deer hunting, I saw one 30 yard away on the other side of the creek as I was walking back to my truck. It appeard to be stalking me, and hid in some plum thickets when I busted it. You can't believe anything any governement department tells you. Thanks for the video Dave! Great to see you!!

@@raymondparker1110 Unfortunately the government in their wisdom does not allow anyone to carry handguns here regardless of the dangers that lurk in the woods. Heck they are taking our hunting rifles away as we speak. I guess back country travel is as safe as going to the Mall....actually that's a bad analogy! Malls have proven to be far more dangerous since far more dangerous 2 legged critters shoot them up without having to worry about return fire. But that's another convesration for a different forum.

The next morning, there were fresh bear tracks in the muddy ground all around the truck. Yes, a sidearm is a good idea. Preferably a 10mm or magnum caliber.

A pistol is not a hunting gun. To stop an attacking animal, a big cat ,a bear or a boar is not that easy
as you may think. As long as you are not Buffalo Bill targeting an attacking predator ,coming at you
with 30 m/h is next to impossible. And big cats mostly attack from behind.

    • @raymondparker1110
      @raymondparker1110 Рік тому +9

@@theraven5935 To the contrary, I've hunted with handguns for over 40 years. While they aren't as capable as a rifle or shotgun at distance, they do remarkably well at short distance with proper shot placement. A magnum revolver is much more portable, and will always be within reach if or when I need it. To venture out armed is a much better option than not, at least then I have a fighting chance at survival. Period.

I've camped for a lot of years. I agree 100%. Black bears can be annoying especially in areas of heavy human traffic (food from people), but Mtn Lions are sneaky b*stards. They can be invisible in the brush and make NO sound! I have only seen 5 of them in my travels. But, I make several mud holes around camp so I can see which critters have visited me in the night. I have seen several cat tracks in camp, or on trail, and boy it startles the heck out of me!! My Spidey senses go to DEFCON 1 for sure!!!!! For me, where there are deer tracks, there are cats. I agree with trusting your gut. I was walking back to my cabin after work at night in Sequoia National Park. Kept feeling I would see a bear. Was looking to my right side when I finally turned to my left and almost stumbled over a bear cub. Both of us were quite startled and I immediately worried about mama bear. Made haste to the closest thing to me, a laundry room. A few seconds later mama bear came rumblings through camp. Sat in that laundry room with a couple of my coworkers drinking grog for a good hour til it was safe to go to our cabins. I don't mess with mama bear!

About 50 years ago I was deer hunting in Alabama and a large black cat popped out into the middle of the abandoned railroad bed I was standing in. This area was very thickly overgrown. My Grandfather called them “painters”. To this day the Alabama Dept. of Conservation does not acknowledge the existence of any large cats except bobcats in the state. I’m here to tell you they’re here. That experience scared the bejesus out of a 14 year old boy with a 12 ga. shotgun. The next week my Grandfather’s dogs ran one right across my father and younger brother in the same location. Never saw the lead dog again. Loved this video and love this table! I'd like to do some backcountry camping in CO but I worry about mountain lions. They say they are pretty solitary, but I'd hate to run across one in a foul mood. Oh no! Not overtime! Good $$ but sure takes away from our play time. Nothing wrong with some casual videos. I'd rather put out & watch videos that are put out weekly videos (even if they aren't perfect) than to wait & wait for everything to line up perfectly. Even home run hitters have to settle for some singles. Gosh, I love how you can find neat ways to set up grills/tables/shelves on the trees so that you can work from a standing position. Heck, cougars and even bears are moving around because humans keep building homes by the dozen it seems out in what was their habitat. We even had a cougar killed here in a large, urbanized suburb of Dallas. And the TxPWD did an autopsy, and it was a pretty healthy cat. Good you trusted your instincts and didn't stay. Greetings- Be careful and be aware of your surroundings- Up here in WV, the biologists will say there is no such thing as mountain lions or panther type cats, but I can tell you from seeing actual game cam footage, they are here and many other places. If you come across a big paw print and there are no claw marks, it is a cat. Remember, all cats retract their claws just like domesticated house cats. Also, if you've ever heard one scream in the wild, its a sound you never forget. Ive been out in the thick woods not too far from the house and have heard wood knocking??? It sounded like something was hitting a tree with a large branch or big stick? Some locals say it was like a bigfoot making the noise? I dont know, but it makes you think some. Thanks for the video and be safe out there-

I should have waited to watch the whole video to comment sorry, yes ALWAYS trust your instincts! I can say this though, the sounds you heard as after wasn't the big cat. They are very stealthy and quiet. The can sneak up on a big mature buck within feet of them and the buck won't hear it. I can understand your fear though. This is why having a dog is a good idea if your alone. The dog can smell it, and harass a cat or bear enough to keep them away. There is a story from my home state of PA where a black bear came into a families yard about to snatch one of the little children. They had a boxer, who seen the bear and chased it off . Later the bear came back, this time the boxer chased it off and was gone and after a week of being away the family assumed the bear killed it. Amazingly, the boxer came back with no injuries, they assume the boxer harassed that bear and made it go so far away the bear wouldn't come back!! I know ya work alot so not alot of time to train a dog, but just an idea. I have a rottie and she is the sweetest dog. They are very smart and will protect you with thier life, but, any decent size dog, even a golden retriever I'd good to take out. Anyway, glad your ok and I respect the fact that you followed your instinct and left. Live to bushcraft another day!

I'm from northeast Oregon. We have lots of wildlife there, from chipmunks and squirrels to elk and bears. One time a couple of friends and I were camping over a three-day weekend, and we had mule deer walk right by our camp to get to the stream. SO cool. This story reminds me of a joke I heard long ago. It was in a National Park in California. Hikers were advised to wear little bells to let bears know they were coming. In case of a bear encounter, they were advised to carry bear spray, highly-concentrated pepper spray. "You can tell there are bears in the area if you see their droppings. The droppings will have little bells in them, and smell like pepper."

Sespe Wilderness, Southern California 2010. We saw a fresh cat print in wet sand that was twice the length & width of a pack of American Spirit cigarettes. That’s a BIG cat. Same exact environment you were in, Dave. Rocky shelves, pools, small-tumble falls. I think the cats (like house cats) like the sound of the falling water. It masks the sounds of their movements. And (again like house cats) they like to post up on the rocks in a good pounce position, gazing down at potential meals using the water source. Cat owners should really watch their cats and remember: to you, your cat is watching cars through the window. To your cat, they’re waiting to ambush something (even though it never works) God bless everyone.

Agree with one of your other replies , I always carry some extra protection when I go out. Not only for what nature surprises you with, but more for the crazy two-legged critters that seem to be everywhere. When I was growing up, if you ran into someone out like that, they were doing same thing we were, you said your pleasantries and usually both parties made sure each was OK, then you both went on your way. I'm a lot more cautious these days.

I was walking along a river here in the Sam Houston one day and I hear brush breaking and all of a sudden this doe runs out about 50' in front of me looks at me then goes down the bank and crosses the river where it was about a foot deep and up the bank on the other side. Then she stopped and looked at me again and bolted. I just stood there amazed, then all of a sudden this giant coyote comes from the same direction and stops at the bank of the river and turns and looks at me and my rottweiler and does a 180 and books it back where he came from.. It was pretty intense and without a doubt the coolest thing I've ever seen in nature. There have also been big cats spotted in Sam Houston although game wardens will say different. Dave! Always be positive and always have the mental strength that you are stronger than the wild animal you dealing with. If you afraid, scared they can feel it and they will attack you in a bad situation. But if you think that you can chop up anything that attack you, they will run away. I scared away black bear from my campsite and dealt with many wild dogs. Just built up some anger in your mind and they will run away. Once I chased a bear that showed up just few few feet from my 5 year old son at the campsite. I grabbed my machete and screamed at the bear holding my machete in the air and chased it in the woods. Positive self defence attitude will scare most of wild animal away. You guys down there can carry a handgun also. And the noise of the shot also scares most of wild animals.

Dave, it would have been nice to describe the cat you saw. Obviously it was larger than a feral domesticated cat. Most of the time ccats hunt at night but depending on their luck at night, they will hunt and stalk during the day. Thumbing through my mental files, I discovered memories of two incidents of wild cats in my mind's eye. The first happened in around 1976 or 1977 when my wife and I were in New Mexico. We were driving through Tijeras Canyon, outside of Albuquerque, to get to an area where a little known treasure cache was buried by Conquistadors during the great Pueblo Revolt. On the way to the area I had to take a dump, so we pulled over on the side of the road and I left my wife inside the car, an old yellow Fairlanes with the slant back. She kept an eye out for me, as she usually does. I got out and jumped a crystal clear brook, nearly creek size, Some would call it a creek. I proceeded to a very large patch of cactus and a large Pinon tree, whereupon I dropped trousers and took said dump. It was a beautiful breezy Western day, Sun shining and not to hot and I watched a little roadrunner running about fifty feet in front of me and then it was gone. Fortunately, I did not forget the toilet paper. I got up from squatting and pulled up my trousers, surveyed the site to look for potential landmarks in the treasure, because I was near the vicinity. I spotted a long arroyo and decided I would come back in a few days to follow the arroyo. Which would mark the boundaries of my first search. I hiked back to the car and my wife was waving her hands for me to hurry up and get back. I made it to the car and she told me that she saw a huge cat only a few feet away from me while I was dumping. I questioned her because I never heard or saw the cat while I was out there. It was less than twenty feet from me, according to her at the time. No doubt it was a mountain lion. Anyway, I grabbed my prospecting pick from the car trunk and went back to get a very small patch of cactus to take home and start a cactus garden for her. She didn't want me to go but I went anyway. There were actually several large patches clumped together. I got to the spot and found some very beautiful cactus and I took my pick and wedged it underneath a clump. I tried to leverage those cactus up but the root system was so strong it was as if the cactus were superglued to the desert floor. I pulled and I pulled and they finally gave way suddenly and without warning. This caused me to fall back into another patch of cactus, a much larger patch with much larger cactus and much larger needles. I had to free the pick to use it to get up out of the patch I fell into. I used the pick to trnsport the cactus to the car trunk and had my wife spread out plastic bags to put the cactus on. With it loaded I shut the trunk and started the painful process of having her pull all the needles she could out of my hiney. Fortunately the car was an automatic transmission. We got home, I pulled my jeans off and she had to use tweezers to remove all the needles that were left in. The rest of that day was her smearing my waccum with Elmer's glue and pulling it off repeatedly. Those tiny hair needles are impossible to nearly impossible to see but the old Elmer's trick saved part of the day. The rest of the day was spent recuperating and letting the redness and swelling abate. We did get the garden established and the cactus were beautiful. We even had cactus blooms. The next cat sighting, wasn't much, it was just a bobcat that crossed the street escaping into the woods here in North Carolina. In Florida, I have heard panthers hollering at night but never saw one. When a cougar ( mountain lion) strikes it stalks from behind, then leaps with it's mouth open to put it's upper fangs in a person's eye sockets and it's lower ones at the base of the skull with crushing grip and power. It then shakes it's prey to break it's neck. Anything with a head similiar to a human is done the same way. I am told that if you see a large cat twice in a single day, he is stalking you. You are right to follow your well developed instincts. You have been in nature long enough to develope the natural senses, listening to the birds talk , hearing a stream of water from afar, etc. Birds can help also. When they stop chattering, something is up. Sometimes they go through normal bird conversations and singing, then the singing stops and the volume of the chattering increases very busily then a sudden stop. Many chattering animals follow this same pattern it seems. At the stop, all animals gaze because something bad is going on. When they resume their noises, danger has passed. That place you were at, if you ever go back there again, take a gold pan with you ! It looks like a gold bearing area to me, I would love to run a sluice and work a pan out there, everything is right for it. If you can find where the Hermit had his abode, use a metal detector in the vicinity, check trees atround his former abode. Something made him a Hermit and gold is known to do it. Though he cashed his checks somewhere, he may have hoarded all of his gold and possible treasure. Nick could give his detector a workout. My instincts and observations tell me something is in the vicinity. Also remember that X marks the spot so that confluence could also be a hiding spot above the high waterline and around the most prominent trees or natural growth. Oh well, I have bored you enough and probably worn your patience thin in reading this. I hope things work out well for you at work. Until later. God bless you and those you love and know I love you my brother ! A friend always !

Thanks for sharing your experiences Peter. The cat I saw was solid tan. You have a good point about why Curtis lived there, It had to be for a good reason. I only know it was up that hill across the creek but I havent been up there because its so treacherous. Locals say Curtis kept his bicycle chained to a tree closer to the dirt road and covered with a plastic sheet and no one messed with it. Thanks for watching and may God bless you too.

What a beautiful day for a trip to the woods but cutting it short was the correct decision - if you’re spooked where you wouldn’t normally be, it’s wise to retreat. And today I also learned that the Trangia’s simmer ring may also be called a snuff lid and I am going to call it that from now on because that’s all I ever use it for!

Hi Dave, it's like Raymond Parker commented earlier, I always have a sidearm when I go hiking/camping, because in my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry. I've never seen a big cat in the wild, but I did see tracks in the snow while hiking in the Rocky mountains that were from a big cat for sure, there were huge tail dip/drag tracks in the snow as well. I did see a grizzly one time though while going through Beartooth canyon in Yellowstone national park, it was on the other side of the canyon from the road we were on, so we were safe, but it was still scary to think that I'd be a snack if I were on the other side of the canyon, lol. Rock On!

Hey Dave, what a time to be without Nick! I don't like big cats. You can't trust them. Thank God there was a wide enough creek between you two. As far as the moka goes, I've been drinking caffè and espresso from a moka every morning for about thirty years. You have no idea how much I miss not having a good mug of hot, Wawa coffee. I never even though of processing coffee from a moka like that I will definitely give it a try! Be safe out there, my man!

Setup a tent camp with my Daughter one evening in central Virginia, George Washington National Forest. We slept great. Got up the next morning and found huge cat poop 3 feet away from the tent, it had to have been there when we set up and we just didn't see it. We didn't sleep as well the second night. Local "experts" theorize it was a mountain lion, too big for a bobcat. They also said that if it was still in the area, we would never spot it. I could feel your apprehention in your situation, been there, done that. Coffee wise, I'll stick with simple cowboy coffee boiled in an old Revereware percolator. Thanks for taking me along.

Thanks for sharing that Paul! Extremely scary situation. Several rangers have told me cats are everywhere but people rarely see them because they are so stealthy. I firmly believe the only reason I saw this one was because I was slowly and quietly moving along the creek bank and that loud rushing water covered up whatever small noise I was making. Thanks for watching

Dave … Great video!!! Do what you’ve got to to take care of your job; we understand!!! You and I are alike; we trust our instincts. When I hunt, fish and camp, I carry my .357; thank God the gun laws in Texas allow me to carry without fear of the police or game wardens. We have a working pair of cougars that range across our property; I’ve never seen them, but have seen lots of tracks. We have bobcats too, but I’ve only seen one once, and that was 25 + years ago. See lots of tracks, but only laid eyeballs on one once!!! I really enjoyed this video!!! When work and family permits, please keep them coming!!! Take care, be safe, best wishes and God bless!!! Thanks Chuck, Im glad you liked it. Ive only seen two bobcats in my life. They are masters of hiding. Thanks for watching

Hello from Oklahoma! Good Video! interesting camera work at the beginning. Har! Har! Here in Oklahoma, we would see mountain lions alot while deer hunting in the southeastern corner of the state back in the early 2000's. The game wardens would tell us there aren't any mountain lions in Oklahoma. It wasn't until people started producing trail cam pictures and such that they would acknowledge they were here. Same with bears and alligators. At least your DNR acknowledges they are there. Love the shelves idea. I could almost smell the coffee. Wouldn't it be handy to hang your pack on the backside of your shelves? Just a thought. Thanks for all You do! 👍👍 God Bless!

Oh yes there ARE cougars in Ga. I've seen one. It was a small one but yes . They're very elusive... cat's move very quietly... and are opertunist . They're a lot more places than people think. I'm not trying to spend fear ... it definitely doesn't keep me out of the woods. Just be aware and cautious...

They're definitely here in Virginia, also. I've seen two in my lifetime - one was about three years ago in the Shenandoah National Park near Elkton/Harrisonburg, and the other was about twenty years ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Amherst County. Virginia claims that they're not here, but I for one know better. Both times I saw them, but didn't hear a sound as they moved on. This is the part that has unnerved me the most with my encounters... and in my mind whenever I'm out there. Like Dave said, I'm not afraid of bears (black) either, as they have always ran off once they know I'm nearby - making noise when you see them is key. Big cats, on the other hand, scare me like nothing else. Stay safe !

Wow, Dave. Mt Lions can have a huge range and plus they explore. So IMHO they can be anywhere in the 48 states. Even if there are not mating pairs in a certain state, you could always have one animal passing through. Also there can be mating pairs or a healthy population and people haven't realized it yet.

There have been recent sightings. I found this : There are no native populations of mountain lions that currently live in Georgia. While there aren't any mountain lions that live in Georgia, there have been a few sightings over the past few decades. Mountain lions go by a few names, including pumas, cougars, and the Florida panther.Apr

Here in Southern California, we have plenty of mountain lions, coyotes, rattlesnakes, bobcats, and so on. We’ve had people attacked by mountain lions, some have been mauled pretty bad, others killed. I stepped out of my house to go to work, and there was a coyote on my neighbors lawn staring at me. This is one of those times you wished you had a decent sized walking stick, just in case some critters decide to get fresh with you. 🤪 Now back to the video.
