I graduated from high school in 1971. Many of my best memories are of riding around in my car with my best friends listening to 8 tracks of Blues Image, Rare Earth, James Gang, Chicago, Three Dog Night and many others while looking for something to do. Little knowing the privilege of those moments and that there would never actually be anything better to ever do. Sigh

Me too! Graduated in ‘73 and and traveled the streets of Tulsa listening to anything rock ‘n roll on the 8 track, there were still 4 tracks in ‘72! FM radio was awesome back then also!

Though I had heard of the James Gang and certain I had heard some of their songs, in 1974 at age 14 I ran across a bootleg 8track version of this lp just laying on the ground while trail riding on my motorcycle. Fell in love with this great find. Been a Joe Walsh fan ever since

All the songs had a very good sound quality. The songs were percussive. Really am discovering great rock from 1969 to 1974 through UA-cam.

I was 15 when Crabby Appleton's "Rotten to the Core" came out. Their song "Go Back" blew up on the radio and then they were gone? It is still one of my favorite songs and a 70's classic.

Hi Nick, this is a great 70's rock marathon, and great to hear those organs, with The Doors & Deep Purple vibes.... and then to end with The James Gang is spot on ! Joe Walsh is a living legend. Loved that guy since my teens in the 70's. Byee Jim X

My little brother was obsessed with Rare Earth, so I listened to them all through high school. All these songs were his kind of music, so this marathon makes me think of him. Thank you, Roundabout! And Nick, I agree that Three Kings is a great movie. And that James Gang song was always a killer!

Superb Marathon! Wow… the 70’s were a decade of so many Bands really fighting to make it happen! RareEarth made it, it received a lot of Rock stations air play! I was aware of all this…I’m 65! Boy how we were at the right place and moment in rock history!

Saw Rare Earth in concert in 2004 at Retro Rock Festival in Sacramento, California. Rare Earth was a Blue-Eyed Soul/Rock band from Motown....Barry Gordon discovered the group and put them on Motown. Really Motown's first Rock band. And they were so good in concert.

Although Help is the least known band in this marathon line-up, their drummer Chet McCracken later (1979-1982) went on to become a member of The Doobie Brothers. Coincidentally, he plays on Joe Walsh's 1985 album The Confessor. In fact, he has a long list of credits.
Thanks Nick for adding Funk #49, great choice, and for making the marathon so much fun!!

This was a great marathon! Some new discoveries for me here. I'm familiar with Rare Earth and James Gang, but I don't think I've ever heard the other bands until now. I need to look into more of their music! I don't remember if you've reacted to the 1969 long version of Rare Earth's "Get Ready" (20 minutes long), I'm sure someone has already suggested it. Worth a listen even if you don't react to it.
Correction: I have heard Ride Captain Ride, but forgot it was Blues Image who did the song. I definitely had not heard the songs in this marathon from the band. Good stuff from a "One hit wonder" band!

Flashback city great Marathon request. Roundabout. My older cousin introduced me to all these songs on his big stereo. My older cousin had all the things that my parents would not let me have black lights, posters, incense, burners, lava lamp, and Ed (big daddy Roth) odd Rod cards. Great to watch Nick react to Rare Earth and all these great songs of course the James Gang is timeless.

  • @jayhpaq

Great marathon! Love the choices as they flow together well, musically speaking. Some relatively obscure bands from one of my favorite periods of music along with one (Help!) that I never heard before so that was a nice bonus. Interesting how the band name and the song name are both titles of Beatles albums though they didn’t necessarily sound like them as I was expecting.
I can’t decide whether the period of 1967-1972 or 1977-1982 is my favorite; two great five year periods in rock music. When I hear songs like these it is the former at least until I hear something from the later lol.

Crabby Appleton made only two albums, but Michael Fennelly, their singer/guitarist/songwriter recorded a couple solo albums in the mid 1970s. The first of those is called Lane Changer, and I would urge everyone reading this to check out what is surely one of the best "unknown" albums ever. It's chocked full of great songs that cover a wide range of rock music styles. Jeff Beck makes an uncredited appearance on one song (left channel of Watch Yerself), and the Argent rhythm section play on more than half of the tracks. Unless someone else requests them first, I fully intend to sponsor a Marathon by Nick with a few songs by Fennelly, one of which will of course be Watch Yerself.

@@jayhpaq You're welcome. Help made 2 albums, but hardly anyone noticed either one at the time. They certainly deserved better. The 2nd Help album leads off with a song called Do You Understand The Words, which later appeared on a various artists compilation called Endless Journey. Cheers

OH YEAH, 1971 memories. Just started high school. Big Bro was all over the radio along with American Pie by Don Mclean. Big Bro by RE winding up the Vietnam War protest songs. I don't know why but this song seemed to fade away. I thought it was the best one RE did. When Kansas did Carry on Wayward Son, I thought of this song because I think Livgren stole a little bit of the beginning. Listen to when the organ falls in and they sound so similar to me. Blues Image? Were they the same band that did Ride Captain Ride in 1970? Don't sound like them. They sounded a little like Captain Beyond or maybe visa versa. These were great prog songs from the early 70's. Some of them I've never heard but GOOD selections by ROUNDABOUT. Speaking of Roundabout, I finished up jr. high in 1971 listening to YES, Seen All Good People and Roundabout. No generation can beat the generation of music we lived through!

    • @roundabout130
      @roundabout130 Рік тому

Yes, it's the same Blues Image that did Ride Captain Ride. Both their songs in this marathon are from the same album as Ride C Ride. Nothing else they recorded (3* albums total) sounds all that much like the hit single. *There's actually 8 total, but the last 5 were limited pressings released on a small label out of Florida.
