The James Gang " Rides Again " one of the first albums I ever bought back in 1970. Still sounds great !!! I'll say it again late 60's early 70's was a great time for music !!!
I saw them at Public Auditorium in Cleveland when I was 14, my first concert and they did this song before it was released on that first album.. what a power trio they were... WOW.
"The Bomber". What a choice! The James Gang on top of their game. "Rides Again" is an incredible LP. It's all great. I've been enjoying it since it first came out. Yep, I'm THAT old. Music like this is why Joe Walsh is so HIGHLY regarded and loved.
Hi guys, here’s a couple more from James Gang for your listening pleasure. “Walk away”, and “ Funk # 49. I think you’ll love ‘em! Joe Walsh had such a raw and power sound with that band! Love that stuff! Thanks for the Bomber. Haven’t heard that one for a long time. Cheers! 🎼 🎸 🥁 🎹 🎤 🎧 😎
If you want to see the Gang at peak power, there's a video of Walk Away filmed for the famous German TV show Beat Club. So much power it actually caused minor interference in the cameras. James Gang were on a level with Black Sabbath for heaviness- and for partying too.
Your delightful reaction to this has slipped under my radar for, well 3 years. The relation to jazz is here also, with the introduction of the theme, the improvisations, and the return to the original theme. I don't know if you discovered that the 'Cast Your Fate to the Wind' part is a Vince Guaraldi composition. As always, love your surprise and joy listening to great music.
I've recommended this to several music reactors so it's great to finally see someone discover and appreciate it. Glad you instantly recognized "Bolero." The next tune, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind", is also a cover of an older song. Every song on this album, "James Gang Rides Again", is worth a listen. I think it's their best work.
I was at JB's every weekend. I had a buddy that had access to some high grade reefer. Reefer, beer and The James Gang. They used to play some long ass jams.Dam good times. I went to Vietnam came home and they went big time.Fond memories.
I remember seeing The James Gang when they were promoting this album. I remember a very young Joe Walsh sliding his guitar against his microphone stand. I knew then he was a unique artist. Thanks for promoting this another great band Dixie Dregs.
I remember seeing him do the same thing with his guitar across the mic stand when they played in Tulsa in summer of '71 ... after he had done the Bolero part, & was going into Cast Your Fate to the Wind, the audience was in a hush .... nobody had ever heard a band do anything quite like that before ....
@@rayorichard8175 I was at the Vets Memorial lunch in Columbus - it was the first and only time I’d heard 2000 people gasp in astonishment when “Cast Your Fate” seemed to chime and swirl through the audience courtesy of rotating speakers…❤
James Gang was Joe Walsh's first band. He was asked to join The Eagles, then went on with his solo career...one of the greats, when referencing rock guitarist.
First time I saw a reaction to this. When I heard this as a preteen kid in the 70’s I was totally blown away! Dozens upon dozens of headphone sessions with this.
I used to take a copy of this song to all the 'stoner' parties in my neighborhood. After everyone was completely wasted I would play "The Bomber" on the stereo. The full spectrum panning (where Joe's guitar moves from left to right through out the solo) would blow everyone's mind.
Nice! Same thing for me, pretty much, always a go-to track to blow people away. Hell, it always blows ME away, still, and I've listened to it ten thousand times since 1971! :D (PS: So happy to see I'm not the only one who prefers the version without "Bolero"! It really does take you out of the "zone", although I love the idea that he quotes it, and it's not like he doesn't play it great! (It's the kind of thing that's perfect for a live version, though! I believe it was edited out because the copyright for "Bolero" was still in effect....hence no "Bomber" on the (disappointing) live album.)

The James Gang is one of the greatest 3 piece bands there ever was! You mentioned Judas Priest who came along way after The James Gang. The spacey effect you hear is caused by an Ecoplex. Very early technology. I had one back in the day and used it with my bass. Made for some trippy bass lines.
So cool to see you so caught up in this track and the magic that is Joe Walsh. I've been getting lost in this song ever since I was about 14 years old and it still gets to me at 67. Aside from the musicianship itself, the particular interpretations of "Bolero" and "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" are so sensitive and tasteful. I also get a kick out of knowing that Joe's interest in music was broad enough that he drew these other pieces into his work. So many have never even heard it, but I think you may now be lifelong fans too. Great reaction, as usual.
Every time I stop by your channel (which is frequent) you are so welcoming. Of course, I love your reactions but you two are so unique with your opening. It puts me into such a warm place before the start of each musical journey. Keep up the great work!
Wow... this song came out a year before I was born, and I didn't really discover it unitl 20 years or so later... which is now 30 years ago... and you guys took me right back to that special time and put a huge smile on my face. Muscle memory is strong.
I just discovered this version today myself & I'm 53. I was a teen of the 80's and I was a fan of this early 70's stuff back then so I think the greatest thing about this video is that folks your age are into it even today. That's awesome. Joe Walsh is a treasure!
Thank you so much for reacting to this! Joe Walsh is one of my favs. I am not sure I have ever seen anyone react to this song and rarely James Gang at all. I just discovered your channel recently and absolutely love the commentary and clear musicianship you both hold and convey while discussing. Cant wait to dive into some stuff on your channel that I am unfamiliar with! Keep it up!
Brilliant. It all stated with the emergence in the late 60's of FM radio. This gave all musicians the platform to create more than the 2 minute single needed for the AM format. KSHE in St. Louos was one of the leaders in album music.
This album was released in 1970 the year I came back from overseas serving in the U.S. Army. I recall hearing this track on FM radio and being totally blown away. I rushed right out and bought the vinyl album. I wore out the grooves on this record.
That smooth guitar section was done with a tape loop and a Leslie roto sound and it was amazing. I saw him stun 15000 people at Purdue University in Indiana USA and I got on my knees and thanked God I got to see that show. The band I was in at the time covered 3 of his songs and they were crowd pleasers. Thanks for the Song and Memories
A rock version inspired by Jeff Beck's "Beck's Bolero" (god bless the master's soul forever), but Joe Walsh took it to another level. Such a tribute to the master. I am so blessed to have been listening to this as I transitioned from junior high into high school. I was just picking up on playing bass guitar. What a time to be musically tapped in.
I love taking long walks listening to this. It's amazing to sit here and watch you guys react to a majority of the music I listen to on a daily basis. Awesome
The explosiveness of style and respect for the artistic contributions of the past made the 60s foundational for the exploration of the 70s.....everything was progressive and all artists were embraced. You’ll note how they shared and associated on each other’s albums.
That's the James Gang with Joe Walsh in a time when we heard real music! Now listen and enjoy his early albums, The Smoker You Drink the Player You Get and So What where you get an incredible blend of prog rock, "County Fair" and hard rock, "Meadows"!
I've grown up listening to this song, since I was little, as long as I can remember. Your faces registered every emotion I've ever felt while listening to it. It was beautiful to see. And uncanny. Even as a toddler, I was mesmerized by that middle section. I've always been shocked that this song - which used to be a staple on FM rock radio in the 70s - got "vanished", and the only two James Gang songs you hear anymore are "Walk Away" and "Funk #49". This is as great, and as heavy, as anything Zeppelin or Sabbath or anyone else were doing at the same time. Completely underrated drummer (Jim Fox), bass player (Dale Peters) and Joe Walsh, who inexplicably didn't even make the Rolling Stone Top 100 guitar players list. What the.....?!!!! By the way this entire album, "The James Gang Rides Again" is fantastic. Side one is heavy, side two is more acoustic. Both sides are totally classic. Their first album is also really good. Their third one isn't as good, and after that, Joe Walsh let the band and I don't really know their work. I'll give you some odd suggestions: The Who: Dogs Part 2, an instrumental b-side which finds the whole band (especially Keith Moon) going crazy. Obscure but totally fun. The Velvet Underground: Ocean (the V.U. version with Maureen Tucker on drums, not the other version. It clocks at 5:11.). Jethro Tull...I'd say "Thick As A Brick", but the whole song takes up an entire album! Maybe "To Cry You A Song"? Dr. John: Mama Roux (1968!). Donovan: Hurdy Gurdy Man (I'm sure you know this already). I'd be interested in your reactions to "King Harvest" by The Band if you haven't heard it already (the studio version, not the live version). The Grateful Dead: New Potato Caboose! She mentions The Moody Blues, and I understand what she means! Musically they're doing different things, but it puts you in the same dreamy place. I was listening to The Moody Blues right alongside The James Gang as a young tot, it's all in the same basket for me, so I dug that she made that connection, although it might not be readily apparent to everyone. "Out And In" is a really beautiful track that gets overlooked from them, you might want to check that one out. Or "Are You Sitting Comfortably". George Harrison "Wah Wah" (you probably already know that one). But do you know George Harrison's "Blood From A Clone"? That's a cool one! Crazy drumming from (I think) Andy Newmark. Jimi Hendrix: Have You Ever Been (To Electric Ladyland), or Drifting. Either of those. (you probably know them already). Damn, I could go on forever. You probably already know "21st Century Schizoid Man" from King Crimson, but what about "Pictures Of A City" (the studio version). Or "Groon"! Check that out, "Groon" by King Crimson! (b-side to "Catfood"). Or "Knots" by Gentle Giant! Those two songs are guaranteed to get some cool reactions! "Click Clack" by Captain Beefheart. Two other Beefheart songs I'd love to see you do: Veteran's Day Poppy (last song on "Trout Mask Replica"), or "Kandy Korn" (either the John Peel version, or the version from the album "Strictly Personal".). Or "Abba Zabba". Sparks "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us", ha! Check that one out! You guys are great, you inspire this! I could do this all day! Ha. Keep it up!
I added the last comment for this video but I just watched it again bcuz I enjoyed it so much the first time. Your appreciation I really enjoyed. My favorite James Gang song. You're the only reaction to this song that actually knew what a bolero was. I feel a kinship with you becuz I too play electric guitar. I noticed an Acoustic amp behind you. I used to work there in the early 70's in the cabinet shop. And I noticed a Line 6 amp behind you. I have owned two and own one now. Love your reactions! 😊
Thanks so much for the kind words! What an amazing thing to have worked @ acoustic in the 70's!! So cool you play guitar too. It's always nice to meet a fellow axeman! I am getting into Zappa too. Saw your name🤘🤘🤘I am glad you liked the video brother👍
If you end up doing a deeper dive into James Gang/Joe Walsh, there is an amazing version of Funk 48/49 that Joe played on Live From Daryl's House. Well worth checking out! And that show is a huge rabbit hole itself. It's Daryl Hall and his top notch band with varied musical guests doing live performances literally at Daryl's House. They do versions of the guests songs with Daryl sharing vocals and versions of Hall and Oates classics that the guests choose. The guests vary from Smokey Robinson to Ceelo Green to Kevin Bacon and everywhere in between. One of the very best music shows on the internet.
This was the ultimate acid rock of the '70s. Understand this... you can't do a deep dive into James Gang without also doing a deep dive into Joe Walsh who was also involved with The Eagles. 66 and still loving James Gang.
Joe put on the best light show i ever saw...Mirrored ball, lights going on and off from above to the drummers rolls on the song "meadows" ...unforgettable ! ... IMA Arena...Flint Mi circa 1972
Grew up in Cleveland and went to CWRU. We would often run down to Kent to see James Gang play (and a few times in CLE). Even caught Joe Walsh at the old Euclid Tavern on the edge of campus. I was so lucky growing up in CLE in the 60s and 70s - everybody came through (on a side note: saw Rush at the Agora Ballroom on their first trip to the US from Toronto - thank you WMMS for that one!). You should check out the history of rock in CLE...
The bolero version was cut from the album after 10,000 pressings were released. Conflict with Ravel and his wishes as stated in his will. It was to be played by full orchestras only. Go figure! Glad you got to hear this version! 😎
I always wondered about this. I am 36 and grew up listening to this with my dad. His copy on LP didn't have the Bolero section. When I got a copy on CD for myself when I was in college I was absolutely stunned when it went into Bolero having never heard it. I showed my father and he was equally surprised.
This was WAY before Judas Priest was a band. Let me tell you a little secret about this song, especially the part you're listening to after the Bolero section. Joe learned piano as a kid. One of the all time great jazz piano players is a guy named Vince Guaraldi. Vince actually wrote the music for the Charlie Brown X-Mas show. Probably Vince's biggest commercial hit was a song called, Cast Your Fate Into the Wind. It's a masterpiece. Joe is playing Cast Your Fate Into the Wind throughout the Bomber. I'll put the link to Cast Your Fate Into the Wind here. Listen to it and then listen to the Bomber again. You'll be floored. ua-cam.com/video/JC2ap1M3rII/v-deo.html
Great tune! James Gang was my first rock concert. 1974 Central Park NYC Schaefer beer Concerts series. What a great experience I was 14 or 15. Different world! Lol
The echoplex is a tape loop device, with a fixed recording head and a moveable playback head, allowing you to adjust the length of the echo both before a note is registered, or after, which can give you awesome Dopler-type effects. For more of Joe Walsh's brilliant use of the echoplex, I recommend "You're gonna need me" from the live at Carnegie Hall album, the best electric slow blues ever recorded
There are only a few James Gang songs to explore, soon after this he went solo for awhile before being invited into The Eagles. There are a ton of solo Joe Walsh tunes to check out, starting with Rocky Mtn Way
@@NicknLex Find an original extended cut of Jeff Beck's "Bolero" ...with a little help from some kid named Jimmy Page and Clapton something Also thanks for this trip down memory lane Direct line back to high school
Nick and Lex , James Gang are up there with all the great classic 70's heavy hitters. The band name is because outstanding drummer "James " Fox was it's founder and constant member. Super guitarist Joe Walsh who also did solo records also made the lame-o Eagles rock is just awesome with them. Joe was the main writer also played hammond organ and is the lead singer. Check out the first 3 albums please. Joe also gave Pete Townshend of The Who a Gretsch 6120 hollow body which inspired Pete to write Who's Next ! Dale Peters is the ass bustin bassist on this too.
I've been a James Gang fan since about 1968 and have been a real follower of Joe Walsh in all his groups. Another suggestion (nothing to do with Joe Walsh) - Mountain - "Mississippi Queen" - strong guitar, great vocals and a real rock classic! Very straight forward however. It isn't anything except a well done hard rocker!
I’ve been a huge fan of Joe Walsh forever, but didn’t discover James Gang until later. This was the only album of theirs that I had and unfortunately it was the version without ‘Bolero’. I think I must’ve heard the full version on the radio however, because it did sound familiar. BTW, the section right after ‘Bolero’, the ‘Cast Your Fate to the Wind’ part, was written by Vince Guaraldi. He’s most famous for writing the “Linus and Lucy” theme from the old ‘Peanuts’ cartoons (I think that was the name of the song, not quite sure). Always loved that creamy, dreamy distortion he used on that section. Pretty sure it was achieved with a Leslie preamp. They were originally designed to work with Leslie speakers which were, in turn, designed to work with Hammond organs. That’s how classics like the B3 got their grit and soul. Another guitarist that used a Leslie preamp (and speaker cab) was Peter Frampton. It’s all over his live album. Perhaps you could react to “Do You Feel (Like We Do)” from ‘Frampton Comes Alive’ sometime. One of the classic guitar solos of all time. Others have recommended other Joe Walsh solo tracks for possible reactions. I’d recommend “In the City”, originally written for the soundtrack to the movie “The Warriors”. Also check out “Rocky Mountain Way”. He does a talk box solo on that one. Another effect also used by Peter Frampton. The other thing I always appreciated on “The Bomber” was the spacy slide guitar work. Don’t know if you’ve ever tried playing with a slide - it’s not easy to do well. For a great example of some smokin slide guitar, check out pretty much any track from Foghat’s live album. Sorry for such a long comment. Keep up the great work. Not many reactors doing deep dives into album tracks.
There were two versions of this song released, the first including Bolero, the second without it, due to a copyright infringement thing. So there are two different versions of Rides Again. Not sure if one is more valuable than the other for collectors. For those who do not know, Bolero is a well-known classical piece by Maurice Ravel. It was later featured in the soundtrack in the 80's film "10".

Wow, haven't heard this in ages - Mr. Walsh is just such a treat, both vocally and as a guitarist. Nice reaction! By the way, the Bolero part has alson been explored by King Crimson on the title track from their album, Lizard, from - lo and behold: 1970! It's quite a journey of a piece (ca. 23 minutes), but it's absolutely worthy of a NicknLex reaction - can't recommend it enough ...

I love this so much. The dreamy quality is just wonderful. My favorite is Cast Your Fate to the Wind.
James Gang is mainly known for Funk #49. You would know it when you hear it.
And "Walk Away"
Yup. Please do!
And Walk Away is great.
James Gang is iconically known for The Bomber. It's epic. Funk #49 is just barroom brawl wankfunk.

I saw them live in 1971 in Los Angeles. They were an amazing band and the drummer, Jim Fox, was an amazing drummer ... He still is !!!
i Love how you Love great Music. Thank You
Brilliant! I haven't heard James Gang in ages. I forgot how good they were. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada
Wow. I had forgotten this one! Back in the mist of teenage memories. Great to hear it after all these years. Long Live the Seventies.
Saw them way back in the early seventies just before Walsh left the band. A number of solo albums later he popped up in The Eagles. That surprised me.
Haven't heard this in years, Thanks😊
I played this so many times as a James Gang fan, the stereo panning effects and the Bolero interprotation.
The James Gang got their name from the drummer, Jim West.
He's nearly 75 years old and can still go like a madman!
Jim FOX
@@reesewilliams8643 You are 100% correct Reese!
Thanks for the backup!
The original James Gang were all brothers, and with their leader Jessie, robbed stages and trains.
I was lucky enough to see the James Gang live. The didn't disappoint. 👍🌻🌼
my older bros brought this home back in 73 . hookt my a$$ up quick. love at first listen. you like" thank you.
This is one of the most core Americana rock songs by far.
I remember hearing "The Bomber' for the first time - of course that was 1970 !
Don't worry about the breaks. There is this thing called Spotify if you want to hear the song uninterrupted. Do your thing!
James gang !!!!!! Cast your fate was a Vince gerarde featured in the peanuts , also a gem 💎 very cool that you guys reacted to this great song
Good timing to pause and talk during the most enjoyable portions of the songs.
Jim Fox....VERY underrated drummer. Rides Again would be one of my "stranded on a desert island" albums.
James Gang Live (Carnegie Hall) from 1971 will blow your minds. The James Gang disintegrated at their peak.
I was lucky enough to see the Gang in 1971! So Good!
My most favorite James Gang song.
This is one you don't interrupt, YOU JUST TURN IT UP !!!
James Gang had a lot of great songs 😎
There are a ton of solo Joe Walsh tunes to check out, starting with Rocky Mtn Way
Even Brian May is like "hold up" when Joe Walsh hits with that mouth feel.
React to Turn to Stone off of Walsh's Barnstorm album. Thanks for this one, great job.
First listenin as you for me its a nice peice feel very 70s . Nice réaction. Keep continuin to listen more of those hidden gem
We promise to bring more!! :) - Lex
@@NicknLex
Find an original extended cut of Jeff Beck's "Bolero" ...with a little help from some kid named Jimmy Page and Clapton something
Also thanks for this trip down memory lane
Direct line back to high school
James Gang was a favorite when I was a kid.
Kickin 3 pc band! I love James Gang always have! Listen to : Woman, Funk 49, Walk Away, Tend my Garden, Turn to Stone. Thanks for the reaction
You should react to their song " Standing in the rain " another great vibe ..... Love this song the Bomber great reaction
Right you are...
JAMES GANG, "THE BOMBER". WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL I THE JAMES GANG LIVE CASSETTE TAPE. USE TO LISTEN TOO THIS SONG AND I HAVEN'T HEARD THIS SINCE THOSE GREAT DAYS.. GUITARIST AND LEAD SINGER JOE WALSH WHO AFTER THE JAMES GANG WENT ON TOO A SOLO CAREER BEFORE JOINING THE EAGLES FOR THE HOTEL CALIFORNIA ALBUM... HE DEFINITELY WAS GREAT TALENT WHERE EVER HE ENDED UP...MORE OF THIS "FUNK 49", "WALK AWAY"... "THE CONFESSOR"...
The Bomber. That’s the real stoner stuff right there!
This is truly some great stuff!! Thanks!!
The James Gang 'Low Spark of High Heeled Boys' is magic =)
Wow, haven't heard this in ages - Mr. Walsh is just such a treat, both vocally and as a guitarist. Nice reaction! By the way, the Bolero part has alson been explored by King Crimson on the title track from their album, Lizard, from - lo and behold: 1970! It's quite a journey of a piece (ca. 23 minutes), but it's absolutely worthy of a NicknLex reaction - can't recommend it enough ...
yuz guys are cool. 66 years old n def my favorite guitar solo of all time. It sounds like its crying. Sometimes it makes me air guitar. lol
Thank you. Back in 1969 I used to see The James Gang play every weekend in a small club in Kent,Oho. High grade Jamaican reefer and beer and The James Gang. Good times. I left for Vietnam the next year.Came home and they had an album and hit it big.Check out Funk 49.
Wow!! Phenomenal!! What a great reaction!! I request this song over and over and you guys are the first one to do it. Yes you're right it is similar to Judas Priest. Thank you so much 🤗🤗 This really made my day with all the crappy stuff going on in Texas right now. I'm going to watch this a few times. However here's another hidden gem request: can you please react to Magnum Opus by Kansas? It's Dream Theater but in the 70s. You'll definitely love it. Thanks again!!😀😀😀👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks again for the awesome suggestion and for all your support! Sorry about the situation in Texas now; hope it gets better soon. Magnum Opus is on our list - promise! :) - Lex
Thank you. You guys are amazing
Damn! Jim Fox was great drummer!
James Gang IS Joe Walsh. One of the first albums I bought was their first album. "Walk Away" is my favourite.
The James Gang. 🎸 Klasse
One of the most revered bands in human history.
This is probably their most prog rock song. They were mainly a bluesy rock jam band.
