@@sudzy8285 Tolkien has said that when elves felt their soul scarred due to mental trauma or sorrow, the scars on their souls can sometimes show up on their bodies. I think what they tried too show in the movies, his shock at the amount of Elves that died in the battle and why he wanted to retreat at a point, is the same thing that makes him want to avoid fighting in the books. I always imagined Thranduil as being very fey-like.When i first read the hobbit i pictured someone like Oberon the Fey king, with a bit of a David Bowie as the goblin king flare.I think they nailed it with Lee Pace!
I just want to know how Peter Jackson's mind works, just sheer genius. The magnitude of putting this series together just blows my mind, incredible from beginning to end. Thank you Mr. Jackson for bringing my favorite books to life.
I really love Lee Pace as an actor, so of course his beautiful fantasy character, Thranduil, was just perfection to look at and powerful in his stage presence! I played just him over and over!
In alternate reality, if Jim Henson did the Hobbit in the 80's the only person who could've played Thranduil at that time probably would've been David Bowie. Since that never happened, I like that Lee Pace plays Thranduil.
corsican lulu no way! He was great musically & on stage but on screen he was always just David Bowie dressed up. kinda wooden. Too big a star factor to get past. alright in Labyrinth which was his own vehicle anyway, but not in a middle Earth movie. Lee Pace was superb. One of the best things in the hobbit movies. probably partly because he wasn't in Lord of The Rings as an actual character so he could be fresh. The Hobbit movies don't really work for me though to be honest. can't help being super fussy with Tolkien, having grown up on all his great writing. Maybe because the 3 Lord of The Rings movies were almost perfect which was an amazing achievement. Also The Hobbit being essentially a childrens' book for adults aswell as children, so difficult to make it work in film when LOTR had been done so well and so seriously. I think it might've worked better if they'd cast the entire thing as a different film entity altogether with no actors from LOTR at all. No Cross over. Of course the temptation to do it the way they did was no doubt too great which is understandable.
In the book, the Elvenking though isolated is actually wiser, kinder, more reasonable, more engaged in local policies and concerned about what’s going on in the world in contrast with isolationistic behaviour of movie version. I wish Peter Jackson had made him so and not to be overly arrogant. And what about the magic that Thandruil possesses. Would have loved to see that. In the book, it said his magic is less powerful than the High Elves, but still strong as he was able to put a spell on the palace's entrance doors to keep prisoners from escaping... On other note, Lee Pace's Thranduil is stunning!
Dark Illusion bah! Thranduil in the books is still isolated, arrogant and greedy! In fact, FAR more greedy than the movie portrayed! Though, not nearly as mean, for he did not take up the men of lake town just for extra troops, but out of pity. But he was a greedy elf! And i hate that they portrayed him in a good light, whilst dragging thror's name through the mud!
No. Gotrek Gurnisson. You really need to the book before you comment. He was never arrogant or greedy - Not according to the book. Name one instance where he was arrogant or greedy in the book and I'll debunk that myth with fact and quote from the book itself to prove you wrong. He was somewhat isolated, and that started under Oropher's ruling
Dark Illusion the hobbit, chapter 8, page 155: " if the elf king had one weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, he was ever eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lord of old". Greed, if ever i did see it.
Dark Illusion i also know that azog died in the battle of azanulbizar, that legolas was not in the book at all, and that the black arrow was an arrow, not a ballista bolt, because ive read the book.
Dark Illusion though he wasnt a total ass, ill admit. He did help the men of lake town in their need, and was willing to only take a part of the treasure of erebor, rather than declaring all out war ( though the second might have something to do with the timing. Frankly, no one goes to war in the winter. )
I didn´t realize so much thought went into conceptualizing Thranduil, whom I thought was played fantastically in the film. Some of that concept art is just mouthwatering....
Problems and overusing of CGI aside, The Hobbit is quite a beautiful trilogy, in the techincal, costume design and photography sense. Everything you see in a shot has a propouse and is made with exquisite detail and care. And Thandruil might be the best example of that, even the smallest quirks in the way he walks, moves, speaks, is crafted to the core, to make him eathereal, wise and deadly when needed. Lee Pace is a wonderful actor, so underrated... This is one of my favorite character he made, because the love and care that he had in crafting his performance shines through every scene his in.
I'm not homosexual in the slightest but Thranduil is a beautiful character. Played brilliantly by Lee Pace. A fantastically complicated character. Loved him in the Hobbit. He's right up there with Gandalf for me.
Lee Pace is such a treasure and Thranduil was by far the best thing in Hobbit movies. and Lee's elegant performance of him was absolutely beautiful!! I just wish we got more of him.
When following up a movie like Lord of the Rings with such iconic characters, any sort of follow up characters will be hit or miss. Thranduil was definitely NOT a miss.
Thranduil is my favourite character in The Hobbit. He looks soooo perfect but still has a weakness which humbles his character. Hope they make a movie about The Elves with Thranduil as the major character.
With all Elves one can reason, beg for your life if must. Not with Thranduil. He's the only Elf who fascinates, and scares the shit out of me simultaniously. A reminiscences to how Sauron must have been as a Maiar; terrifying and beautiful.
I like Thranduil-and Lee Pace in the role-because he’s just about the only elf that actually seems like a classic fey. Cold, aloof, amoral, and Other. He also has the sort of pointed, narrow features I associate with elves from myths.
I like how Orlando describes legolas's movement as "cat-like"! I also feel that Lee's Thranduil has that weight and grace like a lion. After so many years I rewatched the Hobbit trilogy and still fell for that character.
Sindar are basically lower elves that did not see the two trees but receive the teaching of Melian the Maia, so they are slightly wiser and civilized than their eastern green/wood elves (wild elves, since they like to nomadic)
@@cool06alt If an asshole like Fëanor, a Noldo who had seen the Light of Two Tress and Valinor is the picture of civility then the race of elves were doomed.

I always imagined Thranduil as being very fey-like.When i first read the hobbit i pictured someone like Oberon the Fey king, with a bit of a David Bowie as the goblin king flare.I think they nailed it with Lee Pace!
Dianne Wright if Julian Sands were younger, he would have been my first call.
Dianne Wright
I just want to know how Peter Jackson's mind works, just sheer genius. The magnitude of putting this series together just blows my mind, incredible from beginning to end. Thank you Mr. Jackson for bringing my favorite books to life.
the way he moves and those eyes.....
Thranduil is one of the few great things about the Hobbit films.
Is Lee really THAT TALL?
+Deniella Gervacio According to Wikipedia, Mr. Pace is 6'5" tall.
Oh! Shucks, I just know. Thank you very much for the VERY useful information. Lee is not only Tall' he's handsome too!
Deniella Gervacio
You're quite welcome.
Be well.:)
He cannot be shorter than my ex-husband...no....no...i don't believe it. He must be more than 6'10
Ellemphriem Nil 6'10" lol that's a Balrog
Lee did a magnificent job playing Thranduil!! I love how the writers scripted his character as well
Imagine him casting for Targaryen 🤭🤩
Dude he's gorgouse as a elf 😩
4:02 they close the box in front of him
4:09 He brings an army that he can help and leaves in front of them
brutal
I really love Lee Pace as an actor, so of course his beautiful fantasy character, Thranduil, was just perfection to look at and powerful in his stage presence! I played just him over and over!
THRANDUIL as an original character in the Hobbit film, was probably the most entertaining.
LEE PACE WAS PERFECT FOR THIS ROLE. Model Elf.
How many times have you watched this?
Me: YES 😌
wow that acting coaching is amazing how doing something so trivial as pointing can be done very clearly and strongly as an elf.
In alternate reality, if Jim Henson did the Hobbit in the 80's the only person who could've played Thranduil at that time probably would've been David Bowie. Since that never happened, I like that Lee Pace plays Thranduil.
only david bowie wouldve been better than this actor
That's moot.
corsican lulu no way!
+Kenneth Crowther He was awesome as Tesla in The Prestige
I wanted Jason Issacs to play Thrannym but he was too old.
Lee Pace is such a beautiful man. And my god is he tall!
LEE PACE : A fantastic actor - I don't know why he isn't a bigger star. He should be the next BOND
Frankly, no one goes to war in the winter. )
"Why did you do that? You promised to set him free."
"I DID."
Spat my coffee out.
Lee Pace is very charismatic!
I never thought the actors portraying elves had choreography for simply moving and walking. Crazy awesome!
Yeah. Me too!
I didn´t realize so much thought went into conceptualizing Thranduil, whom I thought was played fantastically in the film. Some of that concept art is just mouthwatering....
Absolutely incredible job, both Thranduil and Legolas. Legolas really became legolas in the hobbits tale
Lee is HUGE! You can see the other guys not even reaching his shoulders!
Thranduil was a perfect addition, with his class and drama he really added some spice!
I love how they think everyone wanted Legolas in the movies when a lot of reactions were "WTF is he doing here?" XD
Only Lee Pace can make a guy wearing mascara look gangsta. 😜
He makes it obvious that not only women look better wearing makeup.
he's the Prince of LOTR
Thranduil in the movie matched my mental image of the character when I read the books. Good job them!
Omg Lee is very tall..He almost hit his head in to the ceiling xDD
6'5"
Thranduil's gorgeousness is otherworldly 😍😍😍😍😍
Thranduil is my favourite character in The Hobbit. He looks soooo perfect but still has a weakness which humbles his character. Hope they make a movie about The Elves with Thranduil as the major character.
Thank you Mr. Pace
Those first imaginations of Thranduil are absolutely chilling. Such amazing concepts and talented people.
With all Elves one can reason, beg for your life if must. Not with Thranduil. He's the only Elf who fascinates, and scares the shit out of me simultaniously. A reminiscences to how Sauron must have been as a Maiar; terrifying and beautiful.
thranduil is just effin fabulous!!
elfin*
I like Thranduil-and Lee Pace in the role-because he’s just about the only elf that actually seems like a classic fey. Cold, aloof, amoral, and Other. He also has the sort of pointed, narrow features I associate with elves from myths.
I like how Orlando describes legolas's movement as "cat-like"! I also feel that Lee's Thranduil has that weight and grace like a lion. After so many years I rewatched the Hobbit trilogy and still fell for that character.
What an amazing actor to be so amicable in real life to transform into such a stone-cold ruler on screen. Brilliant!
0:52 "what makes this very powerful king of elves different"
His very powerful king eyebrows.
Imagine being the one that Thranduil loves.
How do you even begin handling that??
Thranduil is my most favorite character! So King Fabulosa!
Thranduil : The perfect Elf .
Lee Pace was quite literally the best part of The Hobbit trilogy
Besides Smaug, Thranduil is surprisingly enough my favorite character in these movies.
Love Lee pace in " miss Pettigrew lives for a day. Excellent movie
Just imagine if he had a ring, it would be game over for the orcs within a week.
Never realized until recently he was on Twilight! He is Gorgeous
Lee Pace = Man Crush.
King of Elves, King of the Woods and Stone, but most importantly King of Sass
Having come from the blood of Valinor, Thranduil would naturally have felt superior to "lesser" elves and races.
He wasn't a Valinorean elf. He was of the Sindar; the people who remained behind in Middle-earth.
Nice catch. I had forgotten about this comment altogether.
@@tiaaaron3278 Curse you!
His eyebrows are the epitome of perfection
EntmodremLeguasentTaruilMerle
They are making me wanna watch hobbit trilogy again
How did I not know this existed huh. Thank you Jesus for helping me find this.
Thank you for sharing this video. I really like Thranduil and his son, Legolas
This elf is so beautiful 💯😻🦄🦄🦄
The Hobbit as a trilogy is far from perfect, in my opinion but the casting, just like in the Lord of the Rings, is absolutely perfect
It's those eyebrows. It sticks out and it's beautiful.
those eyebrows are real?!
Yep!
Eyebrows on fleek 🔥
His gorgeous thick lush eyebrows are too precious to be shaved or covered, they just put tape on his temples to change the shape of his brows kind of what Drag Queens do to lift their brows.
CGI
his brows ALONE could end wars.......or start them.
11:40 That's what Rings of Power should have watched. Their elves don't move like that.
Don't move like elves, don't sound like elves, don't look like elves at all!
