Today I delve into the lore and features of one of Subnautica's most iconic vehicles: The Cyclops. How did this one eyed beast actually get its name? How fast as it, and what real life vehicle does it share its name with?

@@Sohowdoinamemyselfagainbefore... it no longer exists because it imploded and in a moment faster than an instant vaporized everyone on board. 🤦♂️
@@the_explorer4600 we know but that doesn't mean it would be before it.
Fun fact: this was not the one that got vaporized deep below. The one that imploded was a modified version of the submarine, and the originial was meant to only go to depths of approximately 300m
When a video game submarine idea is better than the actual real life submarine.
The cyclops is actually licensed by oceangate lmfao
YE LOL WHAT I WAS THINKING
just be glad it's not the Cyclops 2... which was renamed Titan. Yep.
@@keiyakins Im not even kidding i just made a discord png about this
Yea. The titan sub
important note: silent running DOES NOT need to be running for the cyclops to become invisible to hostiles. you just need to turn the engine off
@@iAletho i had the sea dragon rubbing his tentacles on my cyclop's hull, and still didn't attack, they really don't see the cyclops while its engine is down. provided that they didn't detect the sub beforehand
Fun fact: it can be used as a sheild. You can have your prawn out of it and let’s say the sea dragon tries to shoot you, and it hits the cyclops. Having you behind it, it wont take any damage.
I hate the cyclops 😂 so clanky

@@Lex-zp1ez oh yes! It’s only while the engine is on (and or) you are in it!
Bro I cant believe the cyclops (a video game vehicle) is more reliable than ocean gate's
tru
Alterra's Cyclops at least has a known and CERTIFIED crush depth, that if stringently followed, will NOT cause any damage to the submarine.
One might scoff at the fact that it's base crush depth is 900 meters, upgradeable to 1700 meters, is not capable of visiting the Titanic wreckage (3800 to 3900 meters), but keep in mind that the crush depth sensors and hull monitoring equipment of Alterra's Cyclops is working PERFECTLY as advertised.
Even if one descends below its rated crush depth, Alterra's Cyclops hull is will steadily fail in a controlled manner (Taking damage in a predictable progressive manner), buying time for the crew to take emergency measures, either by ascending back up to a safe depth for repair, or, to evacuate from the submarine - keep in mind the hatches CAN be opened from the INSIDE for egress.
@@Adjudicator1 though in reality opening a hatch at 3900m to let you escape won't exactly get you far
@@dijital4801 well also, the crew would know that they feasibly cannot go that deep anyway, and if they did the cyclops would be crushed like an insect before even reaching 3000 meters
Honestly I don't find it that surprising, most video game ideas for vehicles, weapons, armour and such are a million times better than their real life counterparts
The oceangate mention was like a jumpscare holy shit
Considering Ocean Gate's recent events one could say that the Cyclops is not well made.
that was titan dumbass
Well considering it works perfectly in the game unless your a terrible driver.
Unless your driving it with a Logitech controller you'll be fine
@@questionable69420unless the material is not titanium you'll be fine
Alterra's Cyclops ACTUALLY does what is advertised to do! The depth sensors and Crush Depth safety warnings are 100% reliable and accurate, unlike the OceanGate's "Real Time Hull Monitoring system".
Furthermore, the Alterra Corporation Cyclops, when crush depth is exceeded, will take hull damage in a controlled manner buying a little time for the crew to initiate emergency procedures to either ascend quickly and safely or to at least evacuate in good order - keep in mind the hatches CAN be opened from INSIDE the Alterra Cyclops, something which cannot be done in Oceangate's submersibles.
absolutely lost it at the Ocean Gate reference at the end
8:08 This aged like fucking milk
... so about that Ocean gate
"Warning: maximum depth reached! Hull damage imminent!"
"Emergency: hull failure imminent! Abandon ship!"
"Total hull failure in; 5, 4, 3, 2, 1."
@@dyvid8801 "Abandon ship!" sounds funnier, considering that that submarine only opened from the outside
What I'd love in Subnautica 3 is multiplayer and a large submarine that can store 2 or even 3 smaller (seamoth-size) vessels. Maybe also a new small vessel.
Subception eh BoltGamr, now that would be fun! A co-op mode in the next game would be nice! Let's wait and see what we get! Thanks for watching
OR build your own. Just add jets and buyoancy modules to base construction!
@@Rig0r_M0rtis that sounds like a massive project, and while I can't deny how awesome that would be, I cant help but think an octonauts-style moving ocean base isn't what the devs have in mind
@@boltgamr1029 well who knows. The well made hand-crafted map is a Subnautica trademark but if they go for something bigger and more open then why not. The second Subnautica already has extensive base building mechanics so just to make the players creation move wouldn't be that hard IMO. There might be even a mod for that already :D
a seamoth in the belly bay, and a sea truck prawn suit module instead of the usual front airlock.
The ocean gate bit aged like warm milk
BRO I WAS GONNA SAY THIS OMFG
HULL FALIURE IMMINENT ABANDON SHIP!
I really missed the Cyclops in the Below Zero. The Waterbus or whatever it's called just never felt like home.
Yeah I didn't like the Seatruck, much to clunky and not fast enough either! Although I think the Cyclops might have been a bit big for Below Zero's small map haha. Thanks for watching Rigor :)
the map was simply too small to make a cyclops usable unfortunately. most of the story was on land too
Most of sector zero was cramped and packed tightly, making the big, bulky Cyclops a less viable option. The Sea truck, on the other hand, was only as big as you wanted it to be.
@@DoctorTexye but its a headache to use
u get punished for using its main feature, and the way it turns is the worst
u can only expand it back, not vertically or anything. its hellish to put up with
To be fair, being able to use the sea truck to carry the Prawn Suit and detach all modules at once kind of allowed the player to have the Seamoth and Prawn Suit all on one vehicle. Not to mention the sea truck can look up and down greatly improving its maneuverability compared to the cyclops
I love the Cyclops so much. It's more than just a submersible, it's a home. I remember it just being introduced and being invincible. Good times. I hold so much nostalgia for this vehicle, and even have a custom LEGO set I just build for it lol
too bad it's more of a soft target than it used to be.

I can't get over how awesome the cyclops is. It looks beautiful, futuristic and badass and I literally can't think of any improvements you could make to it
I only have 1 improvement that could be made: placing furniture everywhere instead of just the top 2 areas
I got one: putting storage boxes on all the empty spaces underneath, looks so uneven and I hate placing wall boxes to fix it
I think having a small powerplant onboard that takes fuel instead of replacing batteries would have been nicer since you would no longer need to make a small base just to refuel your cyclops
Nuclear Power Plant. Use the slots where the power cells go for fuel rods. I think that the decision not to do that was based on gameplay over logic.
Still, Ion cells and a thermal charger provide plenty of power.
Make it bigger
Worth to mention, that you can NOT ONLY access the stored vehicle's upgrade modules, changing them on the go, you can also access the storage, if you've installed it on the vehicle (Prawn suit has an inbuilt one, that any additional upgrade increases, you can only access a storage of a Seamoth with at least one storage module isntalled).
@@iAletho slot extender mod with multiple storage modules is insane
Dang an Oceangate submarine you are glad to pilot with a controller

8:08 oh god
Thank god it's named the cyclops and not titan
I remember geeking out in my cyclops for a good 10 minutes when I first made one. It's got varying speeds, silent running, decoys, fire suppression, sonar, shields, horn, cameras, lights, it has built in storage, you can build in it, grow food, fabricate, store vehicles and more. It's arguably my favourite vehicle in any game I've played. The sea truck by comparison was a smashed together sea moth & cyclops but did less & was worse at the things it could do.
The Cyclops pretty much single handedly made Subnautica my favorite game of all time lol.
@@trevorherbertson7281
Same lol, I pretty much got the game for the cyclops.
Man the end of this video really hits different with a recent current event
Well...that shared name is rather unfortunate now
Reference to OceanGate definitely did age well
I would like to add that you can add stack two wall lockers vertically on the walls of the storage room, effectively greatly increasing storage capacity. A similar method of doing so would be placing floor lockers(black) perpendicular to the external hull walls in the room after the cockpit upstairs, allowing a large amount of large storage to be easily accessed and built with little issue.
The Cyclops is an awesome sub, and I can't wait to see them expand upon it and bigger ones(hopefully) in the future
Well if you look into it some more, it becomes somewhat clear that its technically possible to avoid using a building base. Since you can use the solar charger on the seamoth, its possible to just toss it outside for a bit and use it to charge power cells. The only thing you'd need a base for is maybe water filtration machines, a recharging station for the cyclops, and the outdoor growbeds for the harder to obtain plant based resources😅
Once mods are brought in, it can become even easier to just ditch using a stationary base, but it really just depends on playstyle
@@moony555I’ve played Subnautica a lot, and totally missed the fact you can recharge Power Cells with the Seamoth, and so recharge the Cyclops as well. Probably because the only times I actually use the Cyclops is when I go deeper, without sunlight.
I always make 2 bases. One near the southwest edge of the Safe Shallows, bordering both the Grassy Plateaus (for room for the vehicles to move, dock, etc. And the Kelp Forest (for Creepvine stuff, Stalkers etc.
The second base I put in a place that’s very deep, literally and figuratively, in the game.
I transport the materials for that new base in my Cyclops. It’s a basebuilder sub for me.
@@Mousse9 the seamoth has a module called the Seamoth Solar Charger. It works pretty well, and keeps the seamoth charged as long as its near the surface (works the same as a solar panel). So you can technically drop it occasionally, and afk or whatever to recharge your cyclops. I personally usually just keep 1 or two bases, mainly for the exterior growbeds. Exterior growbeds I mainly use to grow deep shrooms, creepvine sacs(you can grow the creepvine that grows those by harvesting the sac off a creepvine then planting it), blood oil, and gel sacks. Your method works well generally speaking though. Nowadays the thermal generator upgrade is actually harder since they moved the kyanite even deeper into the lava zone, where it used to be easily accessed right in the dropdown area past the Tree.
I would also recommend building the wall lockers OVER the default lockers in the lower section. The basic lockers are just too small to care about. So you can have a stupid amount of storage that way. Or you can get a mod like FCStudios Alterrahub Suite, which adds a ton of good stuff including a Digital Storage (wont bother to explain, search it up yourself >.
That bonus fact at the end of the video aged well.
Oceangate aint got that fire suppression systen☠

Very nice video. The cyclops was for me one of the best surprise in a game, playing with the little sub for hours .....and then discover that you can drive a WAYYYYY bigger sub was for me a total surprise !!
Its definitely a watershed moment in the game, it comes just as the right time too, allowing you to go deeper and giving you plenty of space to stretch your legs when at the bottom of the sea haha! Thanks for watching Vladimir!
Welll the ocean gate part aged well
me when i heared the words ocean gate 💀
Honestly, the cyclops is kind of underrated. If you search on the internet, some people will say it's not really all that good. (Spoiler warning, click or tap read more)
I find it weird that people think that. Because it's actually the best combo for the lost river and inactive lava zone, just get a cyclops and a prawn suit in it's vehicle bay, a modification station, and a ton of lockers. Add some plants like lantern fruit, bulbo trees, marblemelon, or potatos. It turns into a perfect deep sea mobile base once you have the last depth module for the prawn suit and cyclops.
Yeah its quite strange, I wanted to compare it with other iconic gaming submarines but then I realised there actually aren't that many of them 😂 I think the Cyclops is the perfect complement to the faster and nimbler Seamoth, allowing for greater protection and greater diving, while also allowing you to carry your scouting capability with you! Cheers again for watching Frog!
I do like the Cyclops, but I feel like it has a decent amount of wasted space, at least for how I use it. I don't use the corridor under the engine, I don't really put anything in the engine room, I only put the modification station in the room where you can access the prawn suit or seamoth (used to put chargers there but there isn't really any point now), and I don't like too much clutter in the front room, so there's only that small square space to have fun with.
It also just gives an unique gameplay experience that just isn't found in many other first-person games.
Tbh, a Prawn Suit with a Grapple Arm and all variations of Modules in storage is absolutely broken. Doesnt get hurt by anything, is the fastest vehicle in the game with the slingshot tech, has massive storage depending on how many modules you equip. You can easily take enough Materials with you to make a small outpost with a bioreactor. Cyclops not needed. The only nice thing about it is Growbeds
@@gamersreactions9267 I mean like I use the prawn for mostly exploration and the cyclops for heavy resource gathering because of all the lockers you could put
Fun fact, you use a controller for both submarines! Although.. one isn't able to anymore
Ocean Gate comment did not age well.
they went past maximum depth
That is very true - OceanGate Cyclops 2 (Renamed to Titan) viewport was certified to a pressure of 1,300 meters below Sea Level. (As much as the Mk 2 Depth module upgrade).
The company took it to depths far beyond even the Mk3 Depth module (1700m) - the TItanic shipwreck sits at more than 3,800 meters below sea level, far beyond the best depth module for either Alterra Corporation's PRAWN suit or the Cyclops.
And that feeling when you finally have all the required parts to build it oh baby!!
8:09 This aged well.
💀
When I first played the game, I saw that there were 3 vehicles, so I built 3 Moonpools onto my base before I built a PRAWN Suit or a Cyclops. When I finally built the Cyclops, I was in awe. “You’re gonna need a bigger moonpool.”
I hadn't yet figured out the scale of things when I first got a Cyclops. I was like, why won't it fit? Oh right.
There is a moon pool large enough to park the Cyclops at the enforcement platform.
Damm id almost pay 250k to dive with the newer version of the cyclops in real live
Ok for all of you thinking the ocean gate sub that was crushed was called cyclops your just straight wrong. It was called titan. The real life sub called cyclops despite being made by ocean gate is better made then titan was. Would I still trust it? No but getting it confused for the titan is a insult to a superior sub

I named my cyclops Ocean Gate just for fun, it only just occured to me that they're RELATED
I think ocean gate has more to worry about now than that trademark...
The atlas (in the subnatica universe) is a lot larger and is likely able to hold the cyclops, sea truck, sea moth, and prawn suit at the same time
it only has access ports on top of the bay, so theyd have to reskin parts of it to fit the cyclops

I can't get over how cool this video is! I really like when a common genre of film such as documentary or informational video is applied to a video game scenario. This is awesome!
Thanks DragonOath! I like to try and explain the vehicle from a lore perspective as if it was real thing, while also talking about its in game festures! I think the lore angle really adds to the vehicles believability :)
I remember climbing on top of my Cyclops to escape a Reaper, and it flipped the sub onto its side and the collision impact hit box killed me.
Well let’s hope that the cyclops is more strong and calculated than the ocean gate sub
