  • This is our biggest hydroponic strawberry crop yet. There are lots of Katy's growing tips in this video. We have tried them in the NFT system, but found they are much easier in buckets. We talk about what it was like growing them in the main greenhouse. Then I got a couple things done in there before heading out to the high tunnel. Doug was also outside working on the strawberry support system. We have 100 buckets and 500 plants. The extra strawberry plants went into hanging baskets.

    I drove from little Rock down to tutwiler Mississippi back in 73 to meet my gramps brother. It was the only time I saw him. He told me that grampa grew clover and saved seed from any plant having a 4 leaf! He was trying to create a new stain, at least to him in 1905.!!! That's where my love of gardening came from. Thanks grampa Meyer.

    I have been growing various kinds of vegetables hydroponically for about 3 years now. I started with peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce. They all tasted great, full of flavor. I have since grown spinach, basil, stevia and green beans. I have even just started trying to grow zucchini (I just got some flowers in the last week so nothing has set yet). I think when people say hydroponic vegetables taste bland, they may be referring to things they are buying in the grocery store. Foods that were still picked green and only ripened up in the back of a truck several hundreds or more miles from the grocery store. Love your channel, thanks for all the great information!

      @@HomegrownPassion Could you share your feeding formula? Also what do you do to prevent root rot when you buy plants whose roots have been packed in soil? Do you treat them in some way before placing them in your hydroponics containers? I washed all the soil off mine and they did well for about 2 weeks and then developed root rot and all leaves died. I want to start a new batch but want to make sure that I set them up for success before transferring into my containers.

    3). What yield can you expect when all the rows have been planted?

    I think the reason why people think that hydroponic grown produce is flavorless, is because hydroponic tomatoes for instance, when I see them in the store, most of the time they are trucked in from afar: like from Canada (I live in South West Missouri). So the tomatoes are picked green so they will survive the journey, which causes them not to have the taste as a tomato that is picked at maturity.

    • @xenzgoul8319
      @xenzgoul8319 3 роки тому +6

      It also depends on the kind of tomato u grow, i live in the Netherlands and because of our climate all the commercialy grown tomato's are grown in hydroponic greenhouses. Farmers in co-operation with Wageningen university of agricultural research have bred tomato plants that only need 4 liters of water to produce 1kg of tomato's (around 1.05 gallon for around 2.2 pounds of tomato). Ironically our tomato's taste quite watery, which besides the selective breeding comes from the fact that our tomato's unlike for example Italian and Spanish ones get way less sunlight. Although i kinda like the more watery taste in salads, it's horrible in sauces or soup in which you would really want that strong tomato flavour.

    • @leannekenyoung
      @leannekenyoung 2 роки тому +4

      That’s funny because I live in Canada and feel like all our “fresh” veggies are trucked in from the U.S. and are green on the truck and ripen in the dark. But I can tell you I absolutely LOVE growing my own food in hydroponics which I’m doing in a very small apartment and it’s incredible the quantity of food that you can actually grow hydroponically and I can tell you that the taste is beyond anything that I had ever imagined soooo amazingly good!! The tomatoes are the absolute best I’ve ever tasted and I leave them to ripen fully on the plant and only pick them when I need them.

    Devon...have you looked into vertical hydroponic towers for strawberries? Isn't it a lot of vertical height waste for such short plants compared with tall growing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc? Even with the planters you have now, you might be able to create at least a two tier system with sufficient gap between each tier to prevent shading. Please ask your "evil genius" dad to try building a small scale two tier system in a corner. If it works, you can replicate throughout the greenhouse next season. No offense to Dad...a nice compliment, that's all! 😁 😁 Good luck!

    What people don't understand is that hydroponic and aquaponics make sure that the plant has everything it needs that are readily available, so it takes far less, to get far more, as those in soil, have to go looking for what they need, by growing more roots, which takes time.
    I have found that strawberries are better in 6 inch gutter, with a fine grill put in half way up the inside of the gutter, and you can then circulate the water, then your not wasting nutrients. They also like cool temps in the evenings.

    Make sure you keep your tunnel under 85 degrees with day-neutrals, or you'll see blossoms but fruit won't set. Fertilize routinely with P/K when you are blooming. Hit them with a more concentrated N and a humic April/May. I helped to develop some now patented day neutral varieties when I was at MSU. I grow one of them now commercially on a plasticulture system. The variety I grow out-performs and out-flavors both Albion and Seascape. I have berries May-July and August-October. If you ever want runners I'm in Michigan and can help to work out royalties with university and get your farm going with some.

    Hi Devon. We just discovered your channel as we are doing research on Hydroponics. Strawberries are looking so tempting....
    We were wondering how often do you run the heat in the greenhouse for the leafy greens. We are in Southern Ontario, so climate is very similar. With double poly greenhouse, we are trying to figure out how cold its gets inside winter time and how often do you need to run the heaters. Any info would be appreciated.
    Again, loving you channel.

    I have heard that about hydroponic fruit. Some say it is bland. I grew a hydroponic cherry tomato in my AeroGarden and the tomatoes tasted just like tomatoes. I haven’t tried any other fruit. But I grow a lot of lettuce in my AeroGarden and it tastes great. No dirt or bugs either!

    Getting into this myself and just curious about your opinion on something. Do you think the problem with the NFT channel could be solved by implementing a drip system? The system would work all the same with that minor modification while simultaneously allowing the system to operate without getting clogged or a bulk of the plants consuming most of nutrients?

    When you were growing strawberries in your NFT channels did you have the same
    Nutrient mix for the strawberries that you were using for your leafy greens? Or would your nutrient mix be more similar to tomato nutrients? Could you not put a drain channel below with a filter and then you could recirculate your water?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  2 роки тому +1

      we did but it was just a trial to see if we could grow them in the NFT channels

    • @leannekenyoung

      @@HomegrownPassion how did it work out with your leafy green nutrient mix? Wow I’m surprised they grew so well in a leafy green nutrient mix perhaps that’s why they clogged your channels? They were growing too many roots? I’m surprised the actually flowered with a bloom concentration added or perhaps your leafy green nutrient recipe has bloom concentration added which is really a waste of nutrients (isn’t it?) I’m just learning about the micro and macro nutrient requirements of various plants and I know with my DIY NFT system it has almost zero bloom nutrients and I know there is no way this solution would grow tomatoes with any flowers so I would doubt strawberries would flower at all in it. But it does grow greens fantastic and keeps them from bolting a lot longer as well. I think the companies that create the nutrients overdo what’s truly required with their recipes online after all they are trying to sell nutrients. Anyway I was just curious about the nutrient mix for the leafy greens and how they managed to even flower? Must be more bloom mix then I typically have in mine. I love the idea of your grow boxes but I would create them with an overflow on the sides instead of in the bottom and then that way you could be assured they would maintain a certain amount of water in the bottom of the box so they don’t dry out completely between waterings and then the overflows maybe an inch up the ends of the boxes could be directed down on to a half pipe that is inverted into another half pipe so that the water runs on top and then it gets underneath the top and flows down and the majority of your water is shielded from light and will help reduce algae growth and will help to create more of a circulating system, then the water at the end of the channel can be screened before it enters the return reservoir. Just an idea and something im thinking of doing but I’ll be using the round 4” drain pipe on the bottom with it cut so that 1/4 of it is cut off the top of it lengthwise and then put a 3” drain cut in half lengthwise and slide it into the 4” pipe which should keep anything large from falling into it and then the overflow can be directed to it.

    • @HomegrownPassion

      we feed them 4 times a day. we monitor the waste and only water enough to grow the strawberries. right now, it's about 10 minutes at a time. remember its going through pressure sensitive drip tape that only lets a certain amount of nutrients through at a time. slabs would work just too expensive for us
