I drove from little Rock down to tutwiler Mississippi back in 73 to meet my gramps brother. It was the only time I saw him. He told me that grampa grew clover and saved seed from any plant having a 4 leaf! He was trying to create a new stain, at least to him in 1905.!!! That's where my love of gardening came from. Thanks grampa Meyer.
I have been growing various kinds of vegetables hydroponically for about 3 years now. I started with peppers, tomatoes, and lettuce. They all tasted great, full of flavor. I have since grown spinach, basil, stevia and green beans. I have even just started trying to grow zucchini (I just got some flowers in the last week so nothing has set yet). I think when people say hydroponic vegetables taste bland, they may be referring to things they are buying in the grocery store. Foods that were still picked green and only ripened up in the back of a truck several hundreds or more miles from the grocery store. Love your channel, thanks for all the great information!
I think the reason why people think that hydroponic grown produce is flavorless, is because hydroponic tomatoes for instance, when I see them in the store, most of the time they are trucked in from afar: like from Canada (I live in South West Missouri). So the tomatoes are picked green so they will survive the journey, which causes them not to have the taste as a tomato that is picked at maturity.
It also depends on the kind of tomato u grow, i live in the Netherlands and because of our climate all the commercialy grown tomato's are grown in hydroponic greenhouses. Farmers in co-operation with Wageningen university of agricultural research have bred tomato plants that only need 4 liters of water to produce 1kg of tomato's (around 1.05 gallon for around 2.2 pounds of tomato). Ironically our tomato's taste quite watery, which besides the selective breeding comes from the fact that our tomato's unlike for example Italian and Spanish ones get way less sunlight. Although i kinda like the more watery taste in salads, it's horrible in sauces or soup in which you would really want that strong tomato flavour.
That’s funny because I live in Canada and feel like all our “fresh” veggies are trucked in from the U.S. and are green on the truck and ripen in the dark. But I can tell you I absolutely LOVE growing my own food in hydroponics which I’m doing in a very small apartment and it’s incredible the quantity of food that you can actually grow hydroponically and I can tell you that the taste is beyond anything that I had ever imagined soooo amazingly good!! The tomatoes are the absolute best I’ve ever tasted and I leave them to ripen fully on the plant and only pick them when I need them.
@@leannekenyoung You should make an youtube channel, show us how to grow veggie in our apartments. I would love to grow some stuff, but I don't have a clue on how to do it indoors.

Great video! It's so interesting to see the process of growing hydroponic strawberries from the very beginning. The explanations are clear and easy to follow, which helps me better understand the method and its benefits. Looking forward to the next videos to see how the strawberries progress! Thanks for sharing this valuable knowledge!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Stay tuned for more updates on those strawberries and if you want to look through the playlist, lots of videos posted on strawberries.
I really enjoy your channel, its very informative and I love the whole family thing. Please can you keep the information and progress of the strawberries growing. I've had a few hydroponic ideas flowing to grow strawberries where I live in Denmark, our problem is temperature and the shortness of the summer. Keep the channel going it's a wealth of valuable information.
You and your family do a great work. Love family work together. Like your explanation that nutrition is the key for high qualified strawberries as ones grown in the soil. It’s informative, thanks. Keep going.
@@HomegrownPassion Could you share your feeding formula? Also what do you do to prevent root rot when you buy plants whose roots have been packed in soil? Do you treat them in some way before placing them in your hydroponics containers? I washed all the soil off mine and they did well for about 2 weeks and then developed root rot and all leaves died. I want to start a new batch but want to make sure that I set them up for success before transferring into my containers.
We cut the tips of strawberry roots before we plant them in my country. I am not an expert but I heard that if the roots are bended while you plant, it affects the plant negatively. Great greenhouse by the way!
Thank you for publishing this video. It was very helpful giving me ideas I can use on my farm. Watching from the Philippines and sharing with everyone I know.
I have heard that about hydroponic fruit. Some say it is bland. I grew a hydroponic cherry tomato in my AeroGarden and the tomatoes tasted just like tomatoes. I haven’t tried any other fruit. But I grow a lot of lettuce in my AeroGarden and it tastes great. No dirt or bugs either!
We grow the majority of our strawberries in DWC beds so they are all bare root. We use to have them in media and haven't noticed any difference with the production. This year we're building out more troughs that can be overhead. Where did you get the Beto buckets? They can be crazy expensive!
Make a dibber for you strawberry transplants. An old shovel handle cut and shaped like a pencil. Charles Dowding uses the dibber to plant everything. I use them too and also for transplanting from 72 cell to 4" pots. Good vid. I learned I can pollinate my strawberries with wind!!! Just like maters
I really have positive envy for you. Whilst I do not think that life is in any way easy with what you do, your family definitely made the right decision to go with hydro farming. I only wish that I could afford land in the UK to do something similar. Regardless, I have a small setup in my garage that keeps me busy when not at work. Keep up the good work.
I love this. I have a few questions: 1). Where did you source the buckets? 2). What size is this high tunnel and how many rows can you fit in this space? 3). What yield can you expect when all the rows have been planted? 4) With this variant of strawberry, how many times per year can you harvest? 5). Once all is done, what would a set up like this cost? Thank you😅
CropKing on the buckets. 30 x 96 high tunnel. we are looking at 1 pound per plant. Albion. Not sure now the high tunnel is 8 years old and i have no idea how much they cost now. hope this helps a little.
Hi Katy, I introduce myself as Craig and reside in St Francis Bay South Africa. A few months ago whilst researching Hydroponics I stumbled on one of your videos and haven't stopped watching ever since, love what you guys do such a beautiful happy family business. I am planning on setting up a few tunnels on a very small scale and would love to ask you questions as we progress hopefully you are available. Love and Light Craig
Devon, really enjoyed this video! My dear husband is now wondering how to make hydroponic buckets for strawberries. The US border is still closed for travel and shipping would be killer for us to order from Crop King! Instead of flowers we also planted strawberries in our hanging baskets...LOL! Our NFT system has exploded with growth! We enjoy every morsel from it. Look forward to seeing how much strawberries you get this year. Cheers!
Glad you liked it! You're right, I couldn't even guess how much that would cost. I hope you are able to locate some up there if you end up trying them. They are really nice, and we like the curved edge for when the plants are growing over the sides. That's too funny about the baskets! I can't wait to see how they turn out. I was looking online and found some strawberries that have red flowers, and they looked awesome in baskets. I want to try them next year. Glad you are enjoying your NFT. We are happy to be growing a bigger variety now that the days are long enough. I have to harvest stuff out of my Desktop soon. Hope you have a good week!
As always a great show that teaches how to grow your own crops. I have had their produce and it is wonderful. Please stop at their farm market if you can.
The strawberries are Albion and Seascape from Johnny's Seed. The white rail buckets were special order from CropKing. They do not have them listed on their site yet, and I was unable to find them any where online. I will update when I can get a link for them. The rail system is Doug's design.
Well shoot i wish i had known this sooner..i just spent a half hour on cropking looking for those buckets..your dad did a nice job building those stands and like always you did a great job on the video..have a awesome weekend devon.
What people don't understand is that hydroponic and aquaponics make sure that the plant has everything it needs that are readily available, so it takes far less, to get far more, as those in soil, have to go looking for what they need, by growing more roots, which takes time. I have found that strawberries are better in 6 inch gutter, with a fine grill put in half way up the inside of the gutter, and you can then circulate the water, then your not wasting nutrients. They also like cool temps in the evenings.
On the subject of flavor in hydroponic foods , I read somewhere that a grower was having a problem with tasteless produce and he solved the problem by adding bat guano to the nutrients during the last few weeks before harvest .
Make sure you keep your tunnel under 85 degrees with day-neutrals, or you'll see blossoms but fruit won't set. Fertilize routinely with P/K when you are blooming. Hit them with a more concentrated N and a humic April/May. I helped to develop some now patented day neutral varieties when I was at MSU. I grow one of them now commercially on a plasticulture system. The variety I grow out-performs and out-flavors both Albion and Seascape. I have berries May-July and August-October. If you ever want runners I'm in Michigan and can help to work out royalties with university and get your farm going with some.
We are located in central Michigan and have been growing hydro strawberries vertically for several years now. We would be very interested in the new varieties available to us.
It's an impressive setup. I'm about to set one up. One suggestion is don't use Duracell batteries as they have a habit of leaking and destroying equipment. Use energizer.
I to use Albion strawberry plants but just use Perlite in grow bags. I use Crop King's Hydro-Gro vine mix but water it down to 1.6 EC. It seems to work very well for Strawberries.
Use Masterblend for the strawberries. Mix 1 gram per gallon, 1 gram of calcium nitrate and 1/2 gram of Epsom salt. Add a very little EDDHA iron. You should have about 300-400 ppm + base water ppm. Once they have been established about 6 weeks jump the fertilizer to 2 grams per gallon.
man I didn't know this existed until saw some amazing bright red and huge strawberries at costco. They were so tasty and sweeet. I'm gonna buy hydroponic grown strawberries and whatever fruit is grown this way too.
Yes they are so good and ripe all the way through the berry. We grew almost a 1000 pounds last year and I still didn’t have enough to satisfy all my customers. Check out my later strawberry videos. I go into much more detail.
Okay, I'm a few months late watching this video! Blame it on UA-cam for not giving me notification when you posted it. Question: where can I buy those buckets you are growing your Strawberries in? Also, will you be growing more Chinese Long Beans and if so can they be grown as a Bush type bean? Lastly, have you tried to grow Strawberries using the KRATKY method?
I was just talking to Katy and she ordered all of these buckets last year in early spring, but they didn't come in until it was too late to get a big crop going. They are from Holland. If you want some, you may want to call up to CropKing asap and see if they have any left in stock. They do not have them listed on their website yet.
Devon...have you looked into vertical hydroponic towers for strawberries? Isn't it a lot of vertical height waste for such short plants compared with tall growing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc? Even with the planters you have now, you might be able to create at least a two tier system with sufficient gap between each tier to prevent shading. Please ask your "evil genius" dad to try building a small scale two tier system in a corner. If it works, you can replicate throughout the greenhouse next season. No offense to Dad...a nice compliment, that's all! 😁 😁 Good luck! As always, you guys are doing an awesome job with your farm! Love it! Learning a lot, and hope to start a small farm one day! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge! 😀
Glad I found your channel. I share your passion for gardening. Strawberries are my favorite so I have been trying different ways to grow them. Wish I could share the strawberries a friend brought me no name the biggest berries on these plants and red all thru the berry. Guess I am going to binge watch this channel now. thanks for the knowledge and advice.
Of course and thank you! Those strawberries sound awesome. I'd love to find a variety that got really big and still had a good flavor like that. It's fun growing them in hydroponics, but I have a little patch at my house in soil that I enjoy too.
Those are hanging bato buckets made in Holland and sold by CropKing. You have to call them because they are not listed on the web site. If you do let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
hi James, they were purchased from CropKing. They are not on the catalog you have to call for them. let them we sent you and they will take great care of you!!
I love your hydroponic system. What's the likelihood of switching the systems materials from petrol based plastic, to a sustainable material? Such as Hemp?
Hi Devon. We just discovered your channel as we are doing research on Hydroponics. Strawberries are looking so tempting.... We were wondering how often do you run the heat in the greenhouse for the leafy greens. We are in Southern Ontario, so climate is very similar. With double poly greenhouse, we are trying to figure out how cold its gets inside winter time and how often do you need to run the heaters. Any info would be appreciated. Again, loving you channel.
Quality content and a quality chanel thank you from Australia for all the tips and tricks. Quick question the emitters when used for tomato cucumber and strawberry are they one 24/7?
I have a greenhouse and I grow several types of hydroponic tomatoes, lettuce and three cucumber types. The produce is to die for. When you hear people talking about hydroponic produce taste bland or like water this is a tactic used by conventional growers to keep people from buying hydroponic products. What you need to realize. Is that hydroponic growers can produce more food faster using less space than conventional growers and better quality products without the use of harmful chemicals. So I guess if I were still a conventional grower I would scare people away from my competitors products as well. So it’s best to try it for yourself and steer clear of the many rumors that are far from truth.
They work great... I think you will like them... check out this video from Fenster Farm...they use them too and sell lots of Strawberries. ua-cam.com/video/YacmjU6qP1I/v-deo.html
A couple reasons why the Hydroponic berries taste better are you allow them to ripen completely where as grocery store berries are picked a little early for firmness also, your berries are protected from birds... The birds won't allow you to enjoy fully ripened berries most of the time, Every time I grow strawberries the the birds will share them with me. The birds only eat half a berry and leave me the carcass lol 🍓🍓🍓🍓
Yes this is very true! Any locally grown and vine riped produce will be better than early picked stuff shipped across the country. Sorry about the birds, I know that feeling. I had some strawberries growing outside of my house last year, but our chickens got out and found them.
make sure your ph and ec are right where they need to be...let them get cold at night and they will get sweet...oh let them vine ripe as much as you can
the only time one has 'bland' hydroponic produce is lower PK ration to N e.g NPK. tip to all hobby growers, if you've tasted your crop and its bland add 10-50ppms MKP to each 250ppms of your nutrient tank solution to increase your PK to N ratio.
Hey, awesome job tha 3 of u. I love the family teamwork. I love those strawberry buckets, tha rectangular tubs. What’s the correct name and where did u source them?
will they survive the winter? strawberries in the soil have the ground to warm them and moderate temperature changes. will these be kept and used next year? or started over?
They were special order from CropKing last year. They don't have them listed on their site yet, but I will post a link when I can. I have looked other places online, but haven't found anything similar. We really like the rounded edges.

Y'all are the best. . So inspiring ! What nutrients do ya'll use ? Or from " scratch " ? Or is that a trade secret? Thanks!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate this...I tend to spend a lot of time editting. We are giving the strawberries the leafy crop nutrients from the main greenhouse right now, but we are working on getting the emitter system set up and they will have their own nutrients. We are still deciding which to use, but I will put it in a video once we decide. Hope you have a great weekend!

Love your video's, so much information. I went on CropKing and could not find the strawberry buckets that you are using. Can you help me out to be able to locate the buckets you are using. Keep up the great work.
We purchased those from CropKing. They are a Dutch bucket made for strawberries. We just picked up another 100 and considering turning the high tunnel into a strawberry house only. If you contact CropKing let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you!!
Check the prices at Agi starts in Florida. You use a Mychoriza media for the baskets but how are you getting the same beneficial fungi in your aquaponic planting medium to promote nutrient rich food?
Getting into this myself and just curious about your opinion on something. Do you think the problem with the NFT channel could be solved by implementing a drip system? The system would work all the same with that minor modification while simultaneously allowing the system to operate without getting clogged or a bulk of the plants consuming most of nutrients?
Hi there love the videos. Silly question about the strawberries. Doe's the water dump out on the ground after its passed through the pot or does the strawberry plants pretty much use it up.

This is a cool idea for my mini ranch I’m playing to start in the summer.
Oh yeah it’s so nice having fresh strawberries. Good luck with your ranch!
Look at you with the Cleveland Brown Shirt, very nice. We live in Lodi Ohio and love our Browns
Thanks! You are very close by. Can’t wait to see how this season goes...Go Browns!
man I didn't know this existed until saw some amazing bright red and huge strawberries at costco.
@@HomegrownPassion absolutely wonderful.. thank you for what you do. 🙏
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. Hope you subscribe to stay updated on what I’m doing. Strawberries are all ready growing!!
where did you get the buckets to buy to plant the strawberries in. I like the set-up above ground. Excellent video.
Would also love to know where you got the buckets?
What a beautiful set up👍❤️😃
Thank you! 🤗
Great family. Hoping you guys really do well.
It might have been covered in a comment, but where did you get those container/buckets from?
Okay, I'm a few months late watching this video! Blame it on UA-cam for not giving me notification when you posted it. Question: where can I buy those buckets you are growing your Strawberries in? Also, will you be growing more Chinese Long Beans and if so can they be grown as a Bush type bean? Lastly, have you tried to grow Strawberries using the KRATKY method?
Wow. That strawberry system is exactly what I was talking to you about yesterday. Lol
Church
I was just talking to Katy and she ordered all of these buckets last year in early spring, but they didn't come in until it was too late to get a big crop going. They are from Holland. If you want some, you may want to call up to CropKing asap and see if they have any left in stock. They do not have them listed on their website yet.
@@HomegrownPassion hi how can I contact you? I was amazed by your videos 🙏🙏🙏
Great set up! Will be great to see how the strawberrys come out!
Good show! Keep up the good Passion...
Awesome... Thanks for video... I love strawberry
Most welcome 😊
Glad I found your channel. I share your passion for gardening. Strawberries are my favorite so I have been trying different ways to grow them. Wish I could share the strawberries a friend brought me no name the biggest berries on these plants and red all thru the berry. Guess I am going to binge watch this channel now. thanks for the knowledge and advice.
Of course and thank you! Those strawberries sound awesome. I'd love to find a variety that got really big and still had a good flavor like that. It's fun growing them in hydroponics, but I have a little patch at my house in soil that I enjoy too.
Hey Devon! What boxes are these which you put onto the iron/wooden base system?
Those are hanging bato buckets made in Holland and sold by CropKing. You have to call them because they are not listed on the web site. If you do let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
Peppers are perrenials . I love overwintering peppers and planting them in spring right after the frost.
I think we are going to try that this year...thank you for the suggestion!!!
@@HomegrownPassion they start making peppers right away that way
Curious if you wouldn't mind sharing where you get those buckets from for the strawberries?
hi James, they were purchased from CropKing. They are not on the catalog you have to call for them. let them we sent you and they will take great care of you!!
Loving your videos here from Sydney Australia
Thanks for watching and supporting us!
I love your hydroponic system.
What's the likelihood of switching the systems materials from petrol based plastic, to a sustainable material? Such as Hemp?
Hello how do you call those buckets you planted the strawberries in?
Nice update, roll on Summer. Cheers.
Hi, I admire your strawberry system, Could you tell me the name of the container that you use and where you purchase it. Thank you!
Did you find one bro
I appreciate the info about growing strawberries from NFT... warning will be heeded. Very impressive operation y'all have. Smash.
Much appreciated
Quality content and a quality chanel thank you from Australia for all the tips and tricks. Quick question the emitters when used for tomato cucumber and strawberry are they one 24/7?
1 person operation on A conveyor belt .good set up is wise an profit 📈
Nice video! Half of the summaries ended up with "and dad figures it out"! haha
Awesome set up!
Glad you think so!
The planters that hang on the pipe, going to try my luck
@@HomegrownPassion homegrown is always better.
Wow nice vedio very informative .Thanks for sharing . New supporter here
I love both hydroponic and u
Yay, love strawberry hydroponics!
Would you consider doing a nutrition video?
Awesome vids. Love the education.
Glad you like them! thank you for supporting us!
How long have you guys been doing this project? It looks amazing and it’s brave thing to do
Love your videos so informative. Is there anything I can do to make my hydroponic strawberries sweeter?
make sure your ph and ec are right where they need to be...let them get cold at night and they will get sweet...oh let them vine ripe as much as you can
the only time one has 'bland' hydroponic produce is lower PK ration to N e.g NPK.
tip to all hobby growers, if you've tasted your crop and its bland add 10-50ppms MKP to each 250ppms of your nutrient tank solution to increase your PK to N ratio.
Where can I buy the buckets that sit on rails for the strawberries?/ love your channel, lots of great information. Thx!
They were special order from CropKing last year. They don't have them listed on their site yet, but I will post a link when I can. I have looked other places online, but haven't found anything similar. We really like the rounded edges.
I use silicone grease to protect the battery compartment of my thermometers
Good tip thank you
Excellent video I'm watching while I fetch water to filter through for a nutrient change ... this is one of your best vids !! Great energy and practical advice makes for info I can hold on to !!
That what us Dads are for, fixing stuff. lol
I like the hydro trays containers you use for the strawberries, can you advise where you purchase them, I'd like to try those in my green house in Alaska ???
they would work great. we love them. They were purchased from CropKing. They are not listed on the website.... you have to call them but let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
Oh I loved your setup. I am starting very small and one day will be as big as yours. Would love to know how you started.
Check out the build video. and the introduction to Bradwood Farm video. Tells you how we got started. Good Luck
I'd love to know where you got those rail hanging buckets for the strawberries.
hi Eric, those are from CropKing they are not listed on the website you have to call them to purchase. Let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you.
Love your video's, so much information. I went on CropKing and could not find the strawberry buckets that you are using. Can you help me out to be able to locate the buckets you are using. Keep up the great work.
so, you have to call them. They are not listed on the website. Don't know why but that's how they are doing it.
How wonderful your life style is , thank you for teaching us your knowledge
Good on ya Mum
Would love to know how where you got the strawberries hanging buckets. I would like to try your strawberries setup?
We purchased those from CropKing. They are a Dutch bucket made for strawberries. We just picked up another 100 and considering turning the high tunnel into a strawberry house only. If you contact CropKing let them know we sent you and they will take great care of you!!
My Wife and I always loved your videos, How come they stopped?
We are back...Devon is just taking the summer off....she will back soon...stay tuned....thank you for supporting us!!
Great videos. Nothing beats the taste of Northeast Ohio strawberries. Where do you sell your produce?
Hudson Farmers Market
Check the prices at Agi starts in Florida. You use a Mychoriza media for the baskets but how are you getting the same beneficial fungi in your aquaponic planting medium to promote nutrient rich food?
The strawberries in the growing medium get feed a nutrient solution.
Getting into this myself and just curious about your opinion on something. Do you think the problem with the NFT channel could be solved by implementing a drip system? The system would work all the same with that minor modification while simultaneously allowing the system to operate without getting clogged or a bulk of the plants consuming most of nutrients?
not sure something to investigate.
Hi there love the videos. Silly question about the strawberries. Doe's the water dump out on the ground after its passed through the pot or does the strawberry plants pretty much use it up.
we try to get it so the strawberries use all the water, but you are right if there is left over it dumps on the ground.
