I was all in for JD I wished so bad he stayed the main character. Playing as the son of my favorite video game character of all time in my favorite series of all time had me so excited. His overconfidence and attitude had me thinking "oh he hasn't seen the absolute worst it can get yet, so we'll see his confidence get broken down and grow back up like his dad" but no, instead even he gets tossed aside and the main role is given to the god damn locust queens granddaughter. In Gears 5 when Kait says to JD "this isn't about you, this is about me!" Thats when I knew it was officially over.
could easily have made an awesome plot of the swarm wanting to recreate their locust empire again but cant until they have kait to lead them back to glory. Then JD and Marcus and some others go to save her yet she realizes she wants to bring the locust back and that she wants them to be on the surface like humans and now needs land. Kills marcus infront of JD and as they escape he now realizes he needs to kill kait
Last year i binged played the whole series 1-3 were great games got to 4 and was iffy about it but I didn’t hate it I got to 5 and I dropped it at the point she became the main character when the game open up for the first time and I saw how bad they butcher jd character I was like yeah nah I’m dropping this I couldn’t even finish 5 I was so disappointed smfh if they fix the story then maybe I’ll come back but I couldn’t do it lol
I'm gonna make a prediction; In Gears 6 they're gonna make JD's death cannon, then they'll kill off Marcus and give him the 'Joel' treatment to boost up Kait.
Or maybe we’ll play as Marcus one last time. Kait will give in and join the locust, halfway turning into one herself and becoming one with emulsion. Marcus will die killing her and saving everyone else. The Coalition said that they weren’t going to take the story too seriously. They over delivered on that statement with Gears 5. There’s only one way to fix it. ☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻
Then in act 5 Kait will have self-actualization how amazing important she is and how all the contrive story elements made her the main focus because she deserves it and will fuck her self in front of everyone both cog and reskin locust and then everyone cheers how beautiful and women she is this whole time.
I don't mind jokes every now and then but when they need a quirky comment after every fight it feels like the cast don't take their situation seriously or don't care, like they know they're going to be ok because they know they're the main characters
Exactly. The original trilogy was overflowing with humor and lighter moments, but it was the mix of those moments with the grit and near-hopelessness of the overall story and world that made Gears what it was. Gears 4 felt like an Uncharted game with chainsaw Lancers in it, just goofy and hard to take seriously at any point with quirky, quippy characters that look and act like hipsters.
Precisely. I can only describe the dialogue in Gears of War 4 as Whedon-esque. EVERYTHING is a joke and there is no weight to the character's situation. Plus it's lousy character development.
Gears 4 and 5's problem is the characters "know" they're in a videogame except when the writers want to crank up Kait's angst to 1000%. She's the only character who gets any real drama or introspection. Everyone else feels like they know they're just characters in a story, which usually implies the writer isn't committed to the material. From the perspective of a guy who does write fiction, I find that parody or bathos is a symptom of implicitly or explicitly disliking or disrespecting the material you're working with. The other side of that is reverence, which can be equally destructive, too.
The original trilogy had some alot of sarcasm and jokes and whatnot, but there were a few times where the jokes got cut off by reality. In gears 1, the scene when we meet baird, he “complains” about one of his other squad mates saying something like “alright so wheres (whatever his name was)” with a joking sarcastic “yeah yeah he probably is off doing some dumb shit but he’ll turn up like always” kind of vibe. But when cole says just shows his tags it visually upsets baird. Same kind of thing happened with baird inquiring about dom at the end of gears 3. Like literally i care more about a character we never meet because it shows how the quippy character of baird still deep down truly cares about his squad mates, despite being an asshole alot of the time.
Especially when you find out they werent "peaceful protesters" they were chucking molotovls... that's quite literally hostile attackers lmao. Then the whole dumb shit with the hammer of dawn blasting random places after losing connection (but somehow doesnt use the targeting beacon (jd) it was just targeting.
Gears 5 I liked, but it felt like it was missing an act, both narrative and literally. Every Gears game has 5 acts...except 5. It makes sense both as a game and within the context of Gears 5 as a stand alone product, that Act 3 should have been a JD and Fahz adventure, as Act 2 was Kait and Del. Then Act 4 is the reunion, and Act 5 the end. An act with JD and Fahz would have helped greatly with the context of the protestor/insurrectionist shooting, as well with the aftermath of how JD and Fahz felt about it and their actions.
@@DaxterKing it was a dump plot point they added to make the white character the bad guy. They even made him bald, gave him a beard and a bad arm. I never even understood why that was brought up. The cog and gears did all sorts of evil shit during the pendulum wars but were supposed to care about a few hostile people throwing molotovls?
@@Lajos_KelemenLizzie still should’ve died, but it should’ve been in a last stand sorta way imo (it would provide variety, Anthony’s death was lowk comedic but still sudden, Benjamin’s was tragic since he died right after a high point of his in the game, and Clayton survived, so a heroic but tragic death for Lizzie would’ve been cool)
When they put Kate front and center.....That just wasnt it. They new ganes were good, they just should not have put Marcus in the passenger seat and then set up JD as the successor protagonist, only to cast him asside like trash.
I wished The Coalition followed the gears judgment route and stuck more to prequels. Maybe we could have gotten a game from The Queen/Locust perspective so we could have more back story.
Not really a fan of prequels for the sake of making sequels. It worked for star wars, but that’s pretty much it. A locust focused prequel series wouldn’t really work too well especially because not only are they the villians, but the locust don’t really have “characters” and the locust barely speak. It’s just not an idea that could work, you can’t really write dialogue for something like that. Prequels wouldn’t work in general because we know nothing they try will work and they can’t really do anything crazy to try to stop the locust in those games for risk of overshadowing the efforts the cog take in gears 1-3. In gears 1, they plant a bomb. In gears 2 they sink cities out of desperation. In gears 3 they finally disperse a virus. For a gears game there has to be a plan to stop the locust that either works or doesnt work, but they cant write any plans crazier than the one for gears 1 because it would make that plan look weaker in comparison. It’s best they stay away from from trying to do prequels
Regardless of time period they'd still fill it with woke, feminist yas queen moments that shit on an undermine the great trilogy. Even worse now with DEI. Ms needs to take gears away from coalition.
@@TeryonTheHumanif they really tried it could be done so well but it is difficult to get something like that off the ground but either way gears 5 was made for online and not much else its sad because i was still invested in 4s story
I could forgive characters written the way Kait is if someone humbled them at one point. Like she comes into a cog settlement and starts shit talking when a guard or something checks her on it, the issue is both the character and how other characters react to them. I think it's in judgment when paduk jabs at loomis saying he wants to fight and a guard smacks him for it.
I wouldn’t have minded it if the game decided to put her in her place at some point, or have her realize she needs to change, but no, Kait’s apparently a saint who can do no wrong according to the coalition
"You have these cool guns with fucking chainsaws, and its worthless because PVP is bouncing off the wall and shotgunning everyone" THANK YOU!, honestly, is frucking annoying to main the Lancer, and not have a single bastard on the enemy team duel me with the chainsaw, come on man, we have the Frakking Lancer, wich does a lot of damage at medium to long range, and a freaking cool chainsaw bayonet, and you tell me, that the only way people know how to play this game is, cover to cover jump just to one shot kill with the gnasher?. come on, give me an epic chainsaw duel!
I use to play gears of war online since the very first gears ! And much like you I loved the lancer ! I remember when gears 2 came out we had great lancer battles ! But after about 6 months they nerfed the lancer and you could not shoot people moving sideways and of course this was done to appease the shotgunner community ! I remember I was so pissed ! As now it’s not realistic as a rifle will not injure a player unless you are shooting them from the front and the back ! I remember I was so a upset I quit playing for awhile ! And even though I could play using the shotgun and dashing cover to cover ! I was upset that they took a tactical part of playing and ruined it just to appease certain play styles ! So of course it doesn’t surprise me that this is still the preferred method of multiplayer these days ! All we can do is adapt and overcome !
It's been a long time since I played, but I recall the Lancer being SUPER good and lacer crossing being the meta in early gears 5 multiplayer. But I could be misremembering
Here's one way I like to look at this game: it's proof how incompetent leaders make things worse when they are driven by their emotions rather than use logic. Like you said, every decision JD made, even the bad ones, saved some lives But every bad call Kate made made things worse; Keeping secret about her connection to the Swarm Awakening Queen Reina and pretty much making the Swarm stronger
This video sat at like 200 views for almost an entire year and it felt pretty shitty to try something like this for the first time ever only for it to basically get lost in the void. Then i check and magically overnight this video has almost 8k views and climbing a year later. I guess the key to this kind of stuff really is just patience and confidence lmao. Something you made a long time ago could absolutely just blow up out of nowhere. Edit: almost 50,000 views on this is crazy. This was like my first ever attempt at one of these.
I'm surprised it got so little views, this video was an awesome analysis of these two games. I'm just glad the algorithm decided to recommend it, definitely agreed with a lot of the points here!
@@ROLOSMOKES yeah but not any time soon, I told my audience I'd go through some other series first. A gears 6 announcement may speed it up in the pipeline but it's highly doubtful right now as I'm sure TC is scared shitless as far as where to go with this IP next
the reason why I was genuinely pissed at the introduction of gears 4 was the fact that the ending to gears 3 was retroactively undone. just completely negated it was completely trashed for these new characters. but it was mildly enjoyable but the main part that fucking kills me is the perverse pleasure the plot takes in hurting marcus.
Exactly. And then it just got even worse when it wasn't just "The Locust turned into the Swarm" but then they changed it even more to "Some Locust just completely survived, nothing happened to them"
I agree with the hurting Marcus part. Like, he loses his best friend, his dad, his wife, and his unborn child, yet gears 5 practically *begs* you to choose Marcus’s son, the only family he has left. Hell no, give the poor guy a break. Dumbest direction for gears to gay, Marcus deserves way better than this
Chairman Prescott abandoned the cog and everyone. As soon as he came back he was still top dog and even though Marcus hated his guts he knew that he was the superior officer on the boat
I only had del saved, because I was in co op with my brother. We stopped caring about the story pretty quick. I told him to just save me as a joke. There was no moral quandary in saving either.
I still am baffled that they gave us a choice to save JD or Del. Kait should have been the one that died instead of JD or Del. Besides, I have unfavorably compared this to saving either Kaidan or Ashley from the original Mass Effect(spoiler, I saved Ashley). I mean wtf, a choice like this is reserved for rpg games and not shooters
Eh... idk think they should've just killed del, I feel like jd and kait are the Marcus Anya of the sequels. I don't think the main character should die period
man the entire thing with kait in gears 5 just bugs me, if that was any other character doing what she did they would have been arrested, put on trial, and sent to prison. the entire connection to the swarm was the only shot she had and they butchered it, we could have gotten some cool sections using the swarm. I also find it just odd how theres only 4 acts, every other gears game had 5 and while gears one had the shortest act with like 2 major fight sections and a boss the pc release and ultimate edition expanded the act. makes gears 5 feel like its missing something with its story that they either were forced into rushing 4 acts or they simply didn't wanna bother. the best part of these games is the customization with all the skins
There’s only 4 acts because acts 2 and 3 are double the size of a usual act if you pad out the run time doing all the open world crap. Gears 5 is actually longer than most other gears games, but not in a good way.
This. The mission where Kait's village gets raided was one of my favorite in the entire franchise, controlling the Locust was sick as hell and the fact that it led to her killing her own uncle was an excellent dramatic choice. I was hoping the game would be about her learning why she has these abilities and basically gaining control over them so in future games she can mind jack the Locust and use them against each other, but nah, she kills a berserker and that whole plot line ends and Kait just goes back to being a boring angsty YA protagonist.
Yep. It was stated in the novels. COG always knew about the locusts, since they begun the experiments until one President decided to stop. Gears 5 just exposed that and added more. I found 5's story pretty good actually. Ofc Kait wasn't right at all, but y'know how SJW are. Kait was a good character in 4, in 5 had a shitty attitude which made the player not care about her, only the story sorrounding her. That's what a bad written character makes you feel: giving 0 shit about her/him. Del didn't need a developement cause he was the comic relief of the group (we could say like Cole). We already enstablished that JD is a good character, and Fahz... at first I founf him annoying, but the "time skip" with JD proved him to be not too bad. He seemed like a rival, like a pokémon one, to JD at first, just like a classic teen story, but I'm glad he got the developement he received. Lastly, I wouldn't let the player choose between JD and Del. Del was the ONLY reasonable choice for a character evolution for JD, Fahz and Kait. He already had a close friendship with JD, he enstablished a supportive one with Kait and it was useful to show the true colors of Fahz, which seem less saddened by the death of JD if chosen. Also... you can't let my boi Marcus suffer more.
Nah... its dead. Sadly. All the shit with kait being insifferable, marcus being sidelined, jd getting shafted and made to be the bad guy. Then we have the wacky hammer of dawn connection shit. Like why would losing connection cause the hammer to keep firing randomly? Like wouldnt it still be following jd. The thing used as the targeting beacon lmao? Then everybody hates jd. Then theres the memes. In the words of flashgits, "your black guy doesnt even go wooo" always comes to mind
The Coalition even messed up the PvP. (Admittedly, they did well with PvE in 5) Epic Games understood that the Gnasher's overcentralisation was a problem to be tackled - that it's not fun for all CQC to revolve around one gun. While their efforts were imperfect (sawn-off good only vs gnasher, later nerfed into uselessness, flamethrower a power weapon) they knew that letting more weapons take advantage of wallbouncing was a GOOD thing (Gears 3 Retro is still the best designed rifle - the bayonet charge was best used for its melee damage, not its execution. Wallbounce into charge can easily down shotgunners you've chipped with bullets) The Coalition immediately embraced the "CQC = Gnasher lmao" attitiude, and the PvP sandbox suffered considerably for it. Other than a cheeky chainsaw, how do you beat a Gnasher without your own Gnasher?
@@KopperNeomanretro was a horrible idea and was extremely over powered. It was basically a boomshot rifle that you could spawn and camp with. If they nerfed the bullet damage then I agree the retro charge is another viable weapon to add more to the game
Gears 1 was the most balanced.. gnasher was king but you could use every weapon. Running around frag-tagging was a viable strategy with gears of war 1s fast strafe speed and bullet lag. No other game has cover battles like gow1 because of the shitty barrel aiming. So they had to add the stupid mantle kick that nobody wants. Every weapon was viable in g1 except the boktok
I havent played 5 yet because 4 killed all excitement I had for the series. 3 ended it perfectly. 4 was just killing robots with a new unlikable cast. I gave 4 a shot and was so underwhelmed. They just redid the Locust. I was expecting at least a new enemy. Like Gears 1 is mid, so I am not just some Gears boomer. I want Gears to do well.
My biggest fear if they make a gears of war movie / tv show is them making it about Kate and skipping the original trilogy. I used to love the campaign mode on gears till 4.. didn’t even bother with 5
@@Z3R0NU11 no I'm talking about a new age gears of war I don't care about those old games I've already played most of those that you've listed I'm talking about where we're going forward We need to see things that we haven't seen yet....
@@number1enemyoftheuseless985 your whole point was clearly that men can’t be main characters because of “wokeness” or some shit. When that’s clearly not the case at all, with new or old games. Maybe gears had a girl main character for two games but I really don’t see how that has to do with the downfall of the series. It’s all disconnected from gender the real issue is the story and development
My favorite part of 4 was actually the beginning prologue, and the end mech fight. With 5, I agree that the story was not good at all, but Vasgar and l Paduk in particular are still my favorite parts
I’m shocked they haven’t rereleased 2 and 3 in the Ultimate Editions engine….and put it on PC in the intermittent time between 5 and whatever they’re doing next.
In regards to video game content in of itself, I can agree to a certain extent about the characterization of the original squad. However, the novels accompanying the games (not necessary reading for the plot, but still boundlessly insightful) written by Karen Traviss, the lady who also wrote Gears of War 3, substantially fleshed-out and made the characters feel tragically real. I like her approach where nobody REALLY knows what's going on through Marcus' head, as his perspective is the only direct perspective that we do not follow of the rather large roster of characters, but we as readers come to recognize his patterns and what they mean for his current mentality, alongside the rest of the characters within the pages. My personal favourite is Dizzy, followed by Baird. Dizzy was also a old friend of mine's favourite, too. Not necessary reading, but I do sincerely encourage and invite you to read the 5-part series!
I will also say, however, that Gears of War 2 very much contains the same origin of the Locust that is presented in greater detail for Gears 5. Through both collectibles and Niles' overhead speaking, and specifically the scene in which Dom and Marcus review Niles' describing their exodus under Chairman Munroe (Prescott's predecessor by 2 successions, as I recall) the Sires are described as having been taken to Kadar, the second facility we see. The miner's children are also described as having been experimented on in New Hope, with many of the local collectibles describing an underlying attempt to escape Niles' delusions. It is admittedly never specifically stated, but the Locust have always just been severely mutated humans, what happens when Immulsion is in it's earlier stages and somewhat stagnated and not yet "awakened," as it were (information we get from Adam Fenix in Gears of War 3).
i swear had Gears 5 had a split narrative with different POV characters with different storylines it would have been so much better, case in point JD and Faz had you played as those two on their own journey alongside Kait's it would have been so much more enjoyable.
Great video! I am a Gears OG, and you nailed it on this video. I loved your ideas for Gears 6. Hopefully, they'll have something to show for next months Xbox showcase
Bit late to the party on this, but the team being so different from the original trilogy squad is sort of akin to going from WW2 to Korea or Nam. Sons or new boys entering the fray after the worst of wars only to discover the new horrors themselves. Only thing that irked me with it's story was not much referring of Anya aside her armour, like who she was or how much she meant to Marcus. Also how do you not mention Dom regarding the Worm monument point of interest.
It always freaking bothered me that del and kait acted so heartbroken if you kill jd when they hated him and treated him like shit for the settlement 2 massacre and the hod strike on the convoy which he was trying to save by using it. they just butchered jd character and it bothers me
I really like that you have your own opinion man, I really hate how people treat bad newer games unfairly just because they’re new, or they plain think that an older game is better overall just for being “OG.” Worst of it all is they would try to gaslight the masses into thinking that the “popular opinion” is to believe that the new games are better, when from my experience, the popular opinion is the opposite.
That is a mega ultra hot take on gears of war 1 not having a good story focus. Bro. Gears of war 1 WAS the game that got people hooked to the story. You said we had the whole trilogy to get to know people, but dude we got hooked on the first game.
It’s says something since it’s been years since gears 5 they choose to go back to the original timeline with Eday rather than continue the sequel storyline
Yep, they don’t wanna touch the future of gears with a 20 foot pole. They know they fucked up and are trying to win the fans back by doing what we’ve been asking for, and going backwards to an earlier point before gears 1. Though they’ll still probably find some way to fuck it up.
I actually didn’t hate the story of 4 and 5 yes it’s not good as the trilogy but it was good I enjoyed it ,but I felt that they didn’t need to continue the story the ending of the 3rd one perfect for the franchise.
I thought the main cast was so bland in gears 4 but gears 5 made me love jd in act 1 and 3. Its a shame they decided to make you kill del in act 4 cause i honestly wouldve wanted more of the group dynamic in gears 6
@@TeryonTheHuman that’s not starting from scratch. Apply this logic to a movie franchise or comics. Just cause they go back in time is not starting from scratch. That’s considered a reboot. Like in comics.
Even though this is an older video is only recently came up for me and I wanted to comment. A few of the content creators I follow have been doing some Gears content. Great first attempt at an essay with both objective and subjective viewpoints. I don't want this to be taken negatively, I follow others who do this form of content more often and have a more polished edge. But this was very enjoyable with a high degree of relatability to you and not just the subject. I hope you see this comment.
In my opinion; the only way to save it after the series after 5's ending it to rewrite JD/Del's death where instead of them being killed; the one that wasn't saved gets thrown into some debris and have a chapter where a rescue team finds him and brought back into the squad but that's just how I'd do it personally
Kait is possibly the most annoying character in the franchise. In the part where you are walking through the village, I kept walking her into the back of the horse. Nothing happened, I guess the Coalition didn’t prepare for assholes like me.
So I saw 5 being at a discount for 10 bucks on Steam and decided it’s finally time to upgrade from 4. I wasn’t ready for this, though. That decision scene got me shaking my head in disbelief. So first I failed it because I was trying to figure out how do I throw the knife at the queen instead of my guys. Didn’t work obviously. Then I tried to play it smart and thought there’s no way in hell the writers would kill off JD…so if I decide to save Del, it has to be something like the deathwish option in GTA V, that they’ll both survive, right? RIGHT? Turns out it’s really that simple - it’s either one or the other, choose one. Then Marcus hears the terrible news and he just goes something like “god dammit, James” and “we’re not done here” and then proceeds to never talk about it again. Just…wow. The multiplayer is kinda fun…when it actually works, though. Often you can’t even join a game because of some server error and sometimes you get stuck and gotta restart the game. Tried to play obj PVP, didn’t find a single game in 10 minutes so I gave up. Coop loads matches super fast but it keeps connecting me to distant servers so I’m always at 150+ ping. Also the bots just straight up cheat with their laser precision lock on and shooting through walls. Sometimes they shoot you with a Gnasher…while holding a Lancer in their hands. I mean it’s just a mess. What have they done to Gears, man?
Loved horde mode in gears 3. I can appreciate the fabricator and free form defense placement but honestly the class system was entirely detrimental. I liked how hopeless an endless mode seemed. Like soldiers just pinned down and holding out as long as they can when opposition throws everything they am at them.
Ya it's funny I'll play the shit out of gears 3 or even 2 horde mode all day. Hell me and a friend once beat 3 on insane mode just the two of us. And gears four and five are fun it's just something about them I can't get past and there are servral maps iv never played because of it.
I remember when The Coalition were named Black Tusk Studios, and tasked with creating a new franchise to rival Halo, following a teaser at E3. I was disappointed when Microsoft later gave them Gears of War to work on. I get that Gears was their #2 in the 360 era, but I would've preferred a new IP if one was in the works. Especially since Gears' story ended just fine in 3.
Man you ain't gotta do my boy Joe Sudano dirty like that 😭 Fantastic video, I honestly fell off the Gears franchise around Judgment and never got a chance to pick up 4, which honestly seemed like a good next step for the series. I heard bad things about 5, but never knew the extent of it. I think honestly Kait's gotta go the antagonist route in 6 at this point, turn her bullheaded attempts at defying her fate into something tragic. I think the seeds are there at this point, maybe make it so that she hatches a bullheaded plan to control the Swarm with her deep-rooted connections to the Locust as a means of forcing the war to end, only for her to slowly sympathize with the Swarm while in their hivemind and eventually turns on humanity. It'd be at least an interesting way to end her arc, especially if they try to pass off her mannerisms as something very akin to Myrrah. Hell, they could even pass off everyone just going with Kait's ideas as something due to her subconscious queen-like command, again akin to Myrrah's uncompromising command over the Locust.
Naw there never should of been a gears 4 let alone 6. 3 had the perfect ending only for it ti be meaningless now. Should have expanded on the universe instead of continuing it.
@@NebLleb yes them being remnants or something would make it much better. Not just locust coming back stronger than before. Really made me feel gears 3 ending was pointless. Gears 4 wasn't that bad over all tho. A few small changes would of made it great. And reckoning 5 altogether would be smart. I really think there shouldn't have been a sequal.
I remember years after hearing about 4 and being so excited that they continuing the gears story and gears 4 dropped being a pretty solid game the new then gears 5 ruined anything that the new gears game could've been
i was wondering why i hated kait so much besides how they wrote her, but shes voiced by the same person who did ava from borderlands 3. they just copied that insufferable character and put her in this game
Great video, gears 5 is basically last jedi in terms of story. The gameplay was nice though. Overall i enjoyed hivebusters dlc much more than main campaign.
@@samlund8543The Coalition realize they fucked up the story of the sequel storyline and wrote themselves to a corner. It also seems like they’re ashamed (I could be wrong) of Gears 5. Just like 343 Industries was with Halo 5: Guardians and ignored that game with Halo: Infinite.
This was really thorough, thank you for talking about and criticising the game itself rather rather than using it as an excuse to attack political movements like other UA-camrs.
Hey man love the video just one thing. Im sure the whole plot of the locust being made from infected minors has been around since way before 5. Im pretty sure it was spoken about during the books. But brought into the game because not a lot of people read the books. I could be wrong i just remember knoeing sbiut it before 5 came along
@shanestern1788 Yea, with the rise of RAAM, I get ya. There is a chance that I could be wrong and that it was just more fleshed out in 5 to make us feel for the locust but I'm sure in one of the novels by Karen Travis it was hinted at. Again I'm not sure
There were definitely some heavy handed hints even in Gears 2, the Sires of course just blatantly look like proto-locusts, there are collectibles in New Hope that confirm they were experimenting on children, and of course their’s the Niles Terminals where he says they’re taking the children to Mt. Kidar to continue their work, which is why Kidar leads almost directly to Nexus, the Locust Capital. The stuff with the Matriarch and Kait’s Mom and all that however was completely made up by Gears 5.
My issue are the characters and in 5 it's the characters and open world. 4 = dad just died, throws tantrum... active reloads "oh hoho oh yeah!... did anyone see that?" And dog tier writing, acting is good, and this new war/era could be tolerable if it werent for the damn characters and disconnect. 5= doodoo direction, bad execution of a open world, and i do take problem with the story too
@@TeryonTheHuman there isnt any connection of such depth, eventually soldiers can get attached to each other like dom and marcus, but the reality is, he doesnt care. kim died? it shook the entire squad, directionless, in terror, and surrounded. rojas? both cole and baird showed their grievances. and both carmines... their death was talked about in game both times. the issue is that you cant just throw a baby tantrum and show so much emotion and then have the gameplay disconnect from the story (far cry 3 story as an example)
This is the kind of impartial/open minded video I like, where you want to give the benefit of the doubt to the new studio instead of just blindly hating or supporting them. Don't get too much of them here on YT, so thanks a lot for your approach. I too enjoyed what GoW4 tried, specially horde, since it's my favorite game mode, but I still think the swarm isn't as fun to play against as the Locust, specially when taking into account the different beasts like the Reavers, serapids, baby corpsers, kantus, beast riders, tickers or the lambent mutators in Gears 3, I just found the swarm to be uninspired. I did like the new class system and I maxed out every single one of them, and I liked the fabricator as well since it gives more freedom to the kind of base the player(s) would want to set up. Having said that, I too, don't know why the hell did they thought limiting players to a hero system would be a good idea. At least I didn't get as f*cked over by the hero system like others because the classes/eroes I was into weren't all that powerful (Kat/Architect and Gear/Medic), but I still got tired of playing characters I didn't want to play in order to try different gameplay routes and dropped Gears 5 after operation 2 or 3.
I really do genuinely agree with a lot of what you say here, you're actually extremely on point, no seriously you are but I have one major issue with one of your takes. A big thing you hone in on is how 'Old fans' will dislike it cause it's different and something new, it's not the 'Exact same' which while 'true' in some cases isn't exactly the most honest take one can give towards those people and pretty dismissive of their critiques of the game just because they hate what's not the Original trilogy. 'Old Fans' for the most part from what I remember and even hear now generally like or 'don't mind' Gears 4 as a whole (They absolutely hate Gears 5 myself included.) Did I myself enjoy Gears 4? Yeah, at the time I did and even now looking back all I can say is 'It's better than Gears 1'. You've just seem to have an extremely negative opinion on those who prefer the classics of... well, any good video game series who dislike their continuation where they should've ended and I don't jive with how disingenuous this view of a fanbase is. People who stuck around from the beginning knows what makes the series good, why they enjoyed it and so on, not Jackasses who hopped on the gravy train after the fact like in the major case of Halo. The gameplay was more fluid no one can deny that but it came at the cost of the Original Gears feel people spent 8+ Years accustomed too, the weapons felt like they came straight from Judgement, even the new ones and Judgement is probably the worst in the franchise in the eyes of many people. The enemies while 'Varied' didn't offer anything really new aside from the snatchers and their smaller variants so things got stale quick. Gears 4 has many good Qualities I wouldn't even say it's bad and I'd even agree with you Old fans are too harsh on it nowadays but the sad truth is... it laid the groundwork for 5 and 5s existence, while unreasonable as it is will forever Marr 4s initially good reputation. As for the characters, your take on how it should take Multiple games for us to get invested in them is...No? People got invested in Marcus/Dom/Baird/Cole from the start because Gears never advertised itself as some deep story or character driven experience, it was always cheesy machismo goodness and the first game was nothing but that, every character had their charm some less than others but Gears 1 did its job, establish the world and characters. If it didn't 2 wouldn't exist but 2 then went on and gave the characters more 'depth'. The first game never acted like we were supposed to care for these characters. Gears 4 on the other hand, especially 5 essentially SHOVE them into our faces demanding we care and it's like "Why should we? Only reason we care for James is cause he's Marcus' son" (James himself was a good character overall though so he got a pass). Another example of where this point falters is Master Chief. He had just a 'Few lines' of Dialogue in the first Halo but people latched onto him very very quickly even if he was just supposed to be a Vessel for the player but the main point is that it doesn't and shouldn't take Multiple games to make us care or appreciate characters. Also... just their overall handling can do wonders like Lizzie Carmine seemed to be a fan favorite from the start and I remember for like 2 weeks post release of 5 the fanbase was in an UPROAR they just introduced her to kill her when she should've survived. Overall? This is definitely one of my favorite videos critiquing the new direction of a beloved franchise, you handled it amazingly and I'll be going on to watch other videos to see how you've improved over the past year.
There’s not a single day that goes by that I’m not gonna clown on older fans of a franchise because 9 times out of 10 the shit they complain about is either so minor it barely matters, or they’re so out of touch and in blatant denial of why changes are made over a franchises life cycle that if they had it their way the ip would be a dead flopping fish in the water. They feel entitled because they liked something first but don’t have a clue how to keep something relevant as the world ages. So you’re damn right I’m going to grill them when i read or hear them saying something stupid. In gears 5’s case though? They legit have a valid reason to be mad which is something that’s very rare because in most cases I’m reading dumb shit like how super soldiers shouldn’t sprint in halo or something. You don’t have to like it, but if you wanna hang around on THIS block you’re just gonna have to accept it. I’m not gonna join a “new bad, old good” circle jerk a day in my life. There’s not a single fanbase on this app I’m afraid of mocking when they need to be mocked and if you think I’m bad about it now? Wait till I get to something like Final Fantasy.
I agree that the whole locust being made by humanity less than 100 years ago thing is stupid, but it's not new. This was heavily implied back in the original trilogy, to the point that basically no new information was "revealed" to me in gears 5 because it was all stuff I already knew from looking into it back when gears 2/3 came out. Epic games naming the things in the lab "sires" is no coincidence (to sire a baby means to father a baby, and sire is another word for father). They weren't supposed to be a hybrid of human and locust but rather the _ancestors_ of the locust.
You know what was really unnecessary? renaming the locust to the swarm. They're still the locust their biology as physiologically are still the same thing, They just have crystals on their bodies now.
Aight, i was with you on people not giving gears 4 and 5 a fair shot, but c'mon, my guy. You can't say that and then basically call people sh-tlords for being mad that they changed the atmosphere from something like gears 1-3 to the MCU. Thats a wild change
@TeryonTheHuman in this case, that's more you than them. It's not crazy to feel a certain way about the entire atmosphere of the franchise being changed. Doesn't mean you shouldn't give something a fair shot but that's like going from doom to Sunday school difference. There's gonna be a lot of questions.
@@adarkwind4712 I'm with you, he clearly never played or loved the older games. This is why he doesn't care. He lost nothing in the shift and has the gall of calling those that don;t enjoy this low IQ injection of un-funny humor rEdDiTorS. Lmao. Redditors make up 99% of current MCU audience, talk about being out of touch. He IS a redditor himself.
After seeing a couple of videos diving into the disturbing lore of the COG Coalition. It's sad that none of that is ever implemented into the games. Or the locust politics. Gears 3 was possibly the first game we can play as the locust in a campaign and reminding OG players of Raam again. Halo 2 was highly praised for allowing Halo fans to see the covenant side and not as generic evil aliens. For a war that has gone on long enough, Gears of could've done the same. The fact that we're still seeing the war from Delta side after this long shows little imagination in a world full of interesting lore.
Halo fans were actually acting like a bunch of manchildren when halo 2 first came out and didn’t want to play as the arbiter. They hated him. It wasn’t till years later they came to their senses
This is the first retrospective that ive watched on anything that i didnt think was really gay and unwatchable. You should keep making these homie because everyone else just wets their pants about "the liberals"
I think they just need to kill kait right a the beginning of 6 or capture her and turn her into the queen against her will, get her out of the main role. Make JD, marcus, fahz and the last carmine brother be the main squad. Like they need her gone bad.
I don’t entirely hate the new games they are kind of a nice what if situation to look at but the swarm aren’t the best all be it they could have been done so much better especially design wise and I feel as if Kait and Del even in 5 just aren’t it. I personally can’t stand the idea of having a comic relief character in every piece of genre and I enjoyed the rather dark and grim atmosphere 1 and 2 had. 3 shed that dark and grim atmosphere perfectly because it was an end to the war and everyone in the game that survived up until that point finally got their tomorrow they all wanted.
JD's voice actor, Liam McIntyre has recently stated that he hasn't been contacted by anyone from The Coalition. Meaning that Gears 6's development is still in the early stages, (which given how long it's been, seems incredible) or JD's death is the canon death. Or maybe he's lying to throw us off. Personally, I'm thinking JD's gonna stay dead in 6. I could be wrong, of course. But that's what my gut is telling me. And that would suck if they went there.
Well if you take into consideration that Rob Ferguson, who was the head of the coalition during development of gears 4 and 5 and worked on the original 3 games left the coalition in 2021 to take over the development of the diablo franchise at blizzard, it makes sense that it takes them so long, they lost their leader
I bought this game on sale, 75-85% discount, cant remeber how much, but was near 3k local money, Argentinian Pesos, for the whole package with Hivebuster DLC and some, enjoyed the MP, had fun with Horde 4.0, and Escape Mode, but havent played the Campaing past ACT I, and i have played every Gears Campaing, to finish, from Gears 1 to 4 and Tactics, and LOVED each and every one of them, but for me to not leave Act 1 in this game, yeah, not feeling with the motivation to finish the story, knowing what is to come. Also im just gonna say it, the moment i saw, an Old COG Gear and two New cog gears pointing their weapons, not just at an Onyx Guard, but at the Pregnant First Minister, and face no consequences after it? yeah, it was the moment The Coalition killed the last ember of hope i had for Gears of War 5, sorry, Gears 5..... we need a back to basics for Gears 6 if this franchise is to end on a good note.
Greatings Gears fans! Im a Halo refugee and wanted to see how the other shooter franchises have held up since the 360 golden era. It appears to me not good lol
4:50 to be fair, gears 3 had humour too. It was just relegated to the easter eggs you could find during gameplay. I personally prefer that style, and in my opinion, the humour in gears 3 was actually funnier. A bit like 17:55, but it's funnier because the gears 3 characters usually act more serious/less quirky. It's more left field when they did it, so it actually made me laugh. The way they did it at 37:13 was good though
I dont agree with the change in name to merely "Gears", what is this? a car mechanic game? and neither to the new color palette. Gears of War needs to be dark because of the alien horror aspect. These new Gears looks ridiculous with all these colors, as Gotham Knights looks ridiculous to the Batman Arkham trilogy
Kait pants comment was funny, Critics on the characters were true as hell, mass effect was true and funny. Yeah man all in all I knew I didn’t like this game’s story, it’s the only gears campaign I didn’t feel compelled to play more than once since the story didn’t pull me back nor the “open world” gameplay which had no business being in gears of war, but man all this hindsight made me realize it’s worse than experiencing for the first time/worse than I remember. The shift to Kait’s being the lead when JD was set up pretty well in 4 was definitely uncalled for and the huge time skip felt like I missed out on a lot of events we should’ve been witness to. Also what made gears of war 4 enjoyable for me was the chemistry between the three characters. They had a good dynamic between each other and they kind of balanced each other out with personality traits strong in one but weak in the other two. To just do a time skip and put that much tension between the 3 main characters took away from the appeal of the new cast. Gears of War 4 felt like a great new set up just for Gears 5 to take a shit, step on it, and walk towards the worst direction possible. Also Gears 5 is just titled “Gears” no “Gears of War”. It’s a small thing that just really irked me. We’re the Coalition just too lazy to add “of war” to the title? Anyway great video, loved it.
One more thing, it’s so funny seeing the words “who will you save” in the Del JD choice with Reyna/Myraah just standing completely still and kind of even closer to Kait while JD and Del are slightly further and struggling (therefore kinda moving) but she chooses to throw the knife at an even more narrow target (a tentacle) which is kind of at an angle? What I’m saying is Reyna’s face was an easier target if Kait is apparently that good at throwing a knife. I know she’s a reanimated corpse with Swarm shit running through her but I’m pretty sure a knife to the brain would still fuck her up since she’s got a brain that functions enough to control the swarm. If not kill her at least stun her enough to LET GO of 3 capable ass soldiers. At least Mass Effect assumed you were capable enough to understand through context you were more than likely only going to be able to save one character and didn’t outright just assume you were a baby that needed to let you know someone was going to die.
If I could Rewrite Gears 5 I would do this: I would maintain act one and the parts that have JD on it, I feel like the start Is quite good and seeing old and famiar places is good. Having Said that: I would explore the relationship betwen marcus and JD and how they create bonds over the loss of friends and the fact that sometimes our desicions have really though outcomes. You could easily make Kait the villain and create a conflict of interest betwen Del and JD While changing most of the game towards an coming of age story for JD becoming what Marcus Fenix is
Only just seeing this now. You already know you did a damn good job all around with nuance here. Won't re harp on that. But I will point out that you said about 90-95% of the quiet parts of why shit's gone south...out loud. I'd like to offer up the other 5 that no one ever mentions that I believe explains not only what's happened, but what is likely about to happen. & that's shining a light on the people behind the games. Which to be clear...I don't hate TC at all. Honestly not even a little. I just don't over glorify them for their graphics the way standard Xbox stans do. But to get to the point. It is VERY interesting to think about how the 1st 3 games were viewed in their era vs how these last 3 games will continue to be viewed in their respective era...when you consider that the key players making decisions both essentially align borderline perfectly...politically. Gears 1-3 was Cliffy B's allegory/representation of his views as a radical leftist that hated Bush. At a time where it was widely acceptable to openly hate Bush. So you end up with a game with 4 war heroes being forced to fight while representing policies they don't agree with because their president is corrupt. At times you even had stranded straight up calling Delta fascists (this would NEVER fly now in this era). But 4 badass dudes fighting monsters...people can get behind that no problem even if they don't realize the politics the game presents. Fast forward to NOW though, lol. TC just like Cliffy B...make it NO secret that they are HARD LEFT. Only Hard Left in 2023 does not mean what it once meant in 2006. Yes the Bush hating is well accounted for with Trump hating. But now there's the entire added angle of race & gender representation. As you mentioned in your video...the woke crowd. Of which one quick search into either the TC website itself...or some of the key players working there...and well...yeah they don't hide it at all. Every single criticism you leveled about Kait was spot on. You just left out the reason she was subbed in. The political one at least. & where Cliff was able to get away with pushing his message against republicans by hiding it under the guise of a story about 4 brothers in arms....TC has no such out with trying to push a story about a strong female character that doesn't take any shit from the evil white man. Whose new bestie is black...which is very likely going to be the reason he lives on in Gears 6 btw. TC is thinking it...I'm just saying it. Either way I just think it's funny. Cliff and TC are basically a coin with both sides as heads. With the key difference that sets their Gears turns apart being that Cliff has an outstanding knack for being creative when it comes to fun. Where the coalition on that exact front is completely bankrupt. & the real issue behind this fact isn't exclusive to Gears. It's affecting gaming everywhere. Because we no longer have games/media/movies being made by fans with respect for source material. We now have everything being made by activists that can not be bothered to put ANYTHING above their activism.
The story should have found a way to focus on the 3 new protags. 4 did a good job focusing on JD and his relationships with his crew and father. It is a decent story about young punks taking the easy life for granted, not knowing what Hell their parents really went through. I like that it focuses on JD, he has a link to a character we already know from the previous games, Marcus. Getting to know JD in 4, gives us a great launching point to focus on the rest of the crew in 5 and 6. 5 should have been about the corruption of Kait into the Swarm Queen. The swarm using and abusing her anger and rash attitude to their advantage. We have a segment early on where you see things from the swarm perspective, imagine one at the end, from Swarm Queen Kait's perspective. Controlling bosses and other high end units, and ending the game on a swarm victory. It was lame as Hell, to have her Mom randomly come back. Also the "choice" for JD or Del's life was stupid. Why would Kait go for the tentacles with the knife throw? Throw it at the Queen's head and save both. Then again the whole scenario is stupid, and they should not have brought Reyna back. They also should have called the game Gears of War 5, not Gears, put some respect on the name. 6 Should be about Del and JD trying to figure out how to end the war, and get Kait back. It should have also focused on Del as the protag, and go into his motivations. He could have absolutely been the driving force to get JD to snap out of being depressed and nihilistic about them loosing Kait. A story about brothers in arms. There you have a story about 3 protags, a game dedicated and focused on each of them. How fucking hard is that? I swear every property that M$ has given to one of these steward companies, has been completely mismanaged. EDIT Also a friendly reminder, there is NO Gears of War 5. The Coalition chose to reject the Gears of War name, and just call it Gears.
Video was very well done, glad gears got a little more love. Some of the logic behind the critiques are off but still shows that there is thought behind it.
A couple things. 1) Yes you are correct Gears 1 the characters were very 1 dimensional. However they did release books in between games to give more back story and details of what happened in between games. Yes it’s somewhat annoying to have to read a book to get some extra info but it is rewarding. Case in point the book that covers the events in between Gears 4/5. It gave info that was briefly mentioned in Gears 4 and collectibles in act 2 of Gears 5 touched on. Point I’m trying to make is it’s not “needed” context but it’s still nice to see if you read the books. 2) The easiest way of going forward with Gears 5 ending do exactly what Wolfenstein 2 did. Right up front give the player an option who lived/died. Go from there. 3) The reason why Kait is the main character for Gears 5 was briefly touched on in one of the books that covered what happened when JD was in a coma after the hammer strikes. When JD woke up he pushed everyone he cared about away and volunteered for more dangerous missions. Maybe out of guilt of his involvement at Settlement 2 or wanting to “prove” himself to Marcus. Not to mention in the book “Ascendance” both JD and Del had re joined the COG without telling Kait. There was a plethora of info there on why things happened. Just really stupid you have to read books to get the story in between games.
As soon as "war" was dropped from the title in a series that has been about how terrible war is it was over. I like 4 and how it seems to set up a new saga, I like how act 1 of 5 develops JD and makes him the most interesting character in the game, but then it immediately cuts him out and turns into a power trip for Kait. Even the trailers show the difference, with that excellent sound of silence trailer for 4 that matched the tone of the original series vs 5 having that empowering girlboss trailer with the chain playing looking like a marvel movie trailer. 5 shouldve had Kait and Del defect as she slowly becomes the new queen but willingly in the end makes the swarm side with the not-stranded outsiders against the CoG like they were anyway, and JD and Faz following them and finding out in the end what she's done. Choices were always gameplay consequences that added replay value, so keep them in linear levels and have the choices made in Kait's act affect JD's when he comes in later following to add even more replay value. Marcus struggling to console JD over the difficult choices he made makes sense with Marcus's neglected upbringing and probably disagreeing with how he handled the riot. Maybe Marcus is just more comfortable interacting with the women in his life so he accidentally puts Kait on the path to becoming the queen sending her to Nile's facility, and he regrets that and together he and JD bond over both making big mistakes. And then Gears 6 coulda had Swarm/Outsiders vs the CoG/BDs but more importantly human vs human conflict blurring the line the original games had with a completely dehumanized enemy, maybe with the old cast even split on either side, and it being the final game in the trilogy there having a choice in the end somehow and multiple endings. The first 3 games were about the horrors of war and the losses it comes with and these coulda been about the consequences, with the wind flares being a good example, the damage to the environment caused by destroying all of the emulsion in 3.
I’m on board for E-Day, but Gears 6 is doa for me. I’m pretty sure I can enjoy almost any prequal content they could do but they killed any future they make to the gears timeline.
@@be.a.7462 he deleted the tweet a while back but likes alot of tweets calling the gears story or kait garbage so it’s pretty clear where he stands on things
I agree with 98% of what is said in this video, except for 2 things: - I saved some times JD, because he's Marcus' son, and some times Del, because he's a cool character I respect as well. - the final sacrifice of the robot to save the situation is not meaningless. It has some sad vibes, I really think so. For the rest, Kait is a despicable character, a spoiled brat daughter of a "Mary Sue" and nephew of a "Karen". At least she brings on her legacy coherently. JD has been sacrified for her to be uplifted to be Gears flagbearer. What a sad failure. The choice to kill JD or Del is for me one of the worst plot twists I've ever experienced in a game. I really hate when I get to that part of the story. Every time. Fahz is a cool character just like Del and JD; he has taken the place of Baird as the group's asshole. Pity in gears 6 there must be a new character to fill the void of JD's or Del's death (which one is going to be canon?) The game is very good, though, with dinamic combat and a variety of situations that makes it very interesting, that's why I keep playing it, from time to time, in spite of Kait. PS: I consider Gears of war 4 a decent game, pity for the backtraking part in the first hive, and for the parts in which we must use the fabricator, really really annoying. The DBs are a really lame enemy.
Haven't played GoW after Judgment, because 3's ending was perfect, but seeing that Windsailing vehicle looks like the most impractical thing to travel around in. I know Imulsion has been destroyed but there's no protection from the elements or bullets in that thing.
Does anyone feel like this is gonna be the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy all over again? Edit: I just rewatched and only now i saw the same comparison they made XD sorry.
I'm gonna make a prediction; In Gears 6 they're gonna make JD's death cannon, then they'll kill off Marcus and give him the 'Joel' treatment to boost up Kait.
In Gears 5 when Kait says to JD "this isn't about you, this is about me!" Thats when I knew it was officially over.
couldnt agree more
could easily have made an awesome plot of the swarm wanting to recreate their locust empire again but cant until they have kait to lead them back to glory. Then JD and Marcus and some others go to save her yet she realizes she wants to bring the locust back and that she wants them to be on the surface like humans and now needs land. Kills marcus infront of JD and as they escape he now realizes he needs to kill kait
Last year i binged played the whole series 1-3 were great games got to 4 and was iffy about it but I didn’t hate it I got to 5 and I dropped it at the point she became the main character when the game open up for the first time and I saw how bad they butcher jd character I was like yeah nah I’m dropping this I couldn’t even finish 5 I was so disappointed smfh if they fix the story then maybe I’ll come back but I couldn’t do it lol
so fuckin true bro the dialogue was so predictable KAIT: IM NOT TAKING ORDERS FROM YOU! *HMPH*
A plot twist so bad, Disney had to of been involved.
I'm gonna make a prediction; In Gears 6 they're gonna make JD's death cannon, then they'll kill off Marcus and give him the 'Joel' treatment to boost up Kait.
They won't, after Tlou2 backlash and the feedback to the aspects of Gears 5 campaign, they'll definitely back peddle unless they want Gears to die.
The most based outcome would be TWO CAMPAIGNS, each with different enough content and levels to warrant it
They won't do that
Lol
I still think that the coalition should have made a game about the pendulum wars
I always thought a gears game set in the pendulum wars with the last act being set during e-day would have been amazing

@@LifelessProjektion_EmptyInside exactly, the only time 4 or 5 had anything like that was after JD/Del died
Never disliked JD or Del. Just don’t like how in gears5 they try to make JD the bad guy and like he has to apologize for protecting his men.
@@zachrohler1047And they just killed Lizzie like that, I wanted to see more of her.
At least they didn't do the last of us 2 route but that bar is so low you have to actively try to trip over it
I wished The Coalition followed the gears judgment route and stuck more to prequels.
This game is ENTIRELY backstory. Jesus Christ.
I would play a COG/UIR war prequel. Could be an interesting twist.

Like she comes into a cog settlement and starts shit talking when a guard or something checks her on it, the issue is both the character and how other characters react to them. I think it's in judgment when paduk jabs at loomis saying he wants to fight and a guard smacks him for it.
My problem is that I just can't get behind Kait as the protagonist of the games
Shes insufferable

There’s a chance you can lose a duel. And pvp is all about winning as quickly and easily as possible so *angry ape & shotgun noises!*
Here's one way I like to look at this game: it's proof how incompetent leaders make things worse when they are driven by their emotions rather than use logic.
Like you said, every decision JD made, even the bad ones, saved some lives
But every bad call Kate made made things worse;
Keeping secret about her connection to the Swarm
Awakening Queen Reina and pretty much making the Swarm stronger
This video sat at like 200 views for almost an entire year and it felt pretty shitty to try something like this for the first time ever only for it to basically get lost in the void.
Then i check and magically overnight this video has almost 8k views and climbing a year later. I guess the key to this kind of stuff really is just patience and confidence lmao. Something you made a long time ago could absolutely just blow up out of nowhere.
Edit: almost 50,000 views on this is crazy. This was like my first ever attempt at one of these.
Almost 17k now
I'm surprised it got so little views, this video was an awesome analysis of these two games. I'm just glad the algorithm decided to recommend it, definitely agreed with a lot of the points here!

one thing i hated about gears 4 is the lack of locus, just a bunch of robots
the reason why I was genuinely pissed at the introduction of gears 4 was the fact that the ending to gears 3 was retroactively undone. just completely negated it was completely trashed for these new characters. but it was mildly enjoyable but the main part that fucking kills me is the perverse pleasure the plot takes in hurting marcus.
Exactly. And then it just got even worse when it wasn't just "The Locust turned into the Swarm" but then they changed it even more to "Some Locust just completely survived, nothing happened to them"
Kinda how I felt about halo tbh. They worked hard to wrap it up and in a neat bow to just be fucked.
I agree with the hurting Marcus part. Like, he loses his best friend, his dad, his wife, and his unborn child, yet gears 5 practically *begs* you to choose Marcus’s son, the only family he has left. Hell no, give the poor guy a break. Dumbest direction for gears to gay, Marcus deserves way better than this
i honestly forgot they put healthbars in Gears 5...I was happier having forgotten
Chairman Prescott abandoned the cog and everyone. As soon as he came back he was still top dog and even though Marcus hated his guts he knew that he was the superior officer on the boat
1:33:55 there’s even another moment like this in gears 2 when Cole gets pissed off and starts shooting the rift room out of anger when carmine dies
I only had del saved, because I was in co op with my brother. We stopped caring about the story pretty quick. I told him to just save me as a joke. There was no moral quandary in saving either.
The Marcus-Designed Lancer is actually available in 5 as a skin in multiplayer. Gotta earn it though.
You can also get it by trading with Markus when playing as JD in the first act

Gears 5 is actually longer than most other gears games, but not in a good way.
i also think it would be cool if you could choose whether you wanted that connection removed or not. personally, i think it would be very interesting
@@ickytheclown if i wanted to play an RPG i would be playing fall out. I don’t come to gears of war for “branching storylines” and all that nonsense
Gears 4 felt like that. Never finished 5, hell I never got past chapter 1 of act two. But gears four felt like it needed more.
The locusts back story, was already in Gears 2 they just added more to it

Then theres the memes. In the words of flashgits, "your black guy doesnt even go wooo" always comes to mind
While I was more Geared towards multiplayer, It is is crazy how the story went
The Coalition even messed up the PvP. (Admittedly, they did well with PvE in 5)
Epic Games understood that the Gnasher's overcentralisation was a problem to be tackled - that it's not fun for all CQC to revolve around one gun. Wallbounce into charge can easily down shotgunners you've chipped with bullets)
The Coalition immediately embraced the "CQC = Gnasher lmao" attitiude, and the PvP sandbox suffered considerably for it. Other than a cheeky chainsaw, how do you beat a Gnasher without your own Gnasher?
@@KopperNeomanthis is such a good take. I fucking hate the gnasher in gears 4 and 5. It’s almost so bad that the game would just be better without it.

Worst of it all is they would try to gaslight the masses into thinking that the “popular opinion” is to believe that the new games are better, when from my experience, the popular opinion is the opposite.

In my opinion; the only way to save it after the series after 5's ending it to rewrite JD/Del's death where instead of them being killed; the one that wasn't saved gets thrown into some debris and have a chapter where a rescue team finds him and brought back into the squad but that's just how I'd do it personally
Those longer video essays suit you. I salute you brother. Keep it up.

Man you ain't gotta do my boy Joe Sudano dirty like that 😭
Fantastic video, I honestly fell off the Gears franchise around Judgment and never got a chance to pick up 4, which honestly seemed like a good next step for the series.
I just typed in neckbeard in google and his picture showed up in the top 3 I don’t even know who the dude is lmao

But brought into the game because not a lot of people read the books. I could be wrong i just remember knoeing sbiut it before 5 came along
It's teased in 2 with the sires. I think the locust and kantus worship the sires in the comics, as well as the worms.
@shanestern1788 Yea, with the rise of RAAM, I get ya. There is a chance that I could be wrong and that it was just more fleshed out in 5 to make us feel for the locust but I'm sure in one of the novels by Karen Travis it was hinted at. Again I'm not sure
I believe it was a cut plot point. It was cut specifically for making the Locust too sympathetic.
5= doodoo direction, bad execution of a open world, and i do take problem with the story too
…..how is the active reload thing any different when marcus and dom do it while their squad mates die in the og trilogy?
@@TeryonTheHuman there isnt any connection of such depth, eventually soldiers can get attached to each other like dom and marcus, but the reality is, he doesnt care.
kim died? it shook the entire squad, directionless, in terror, and surrounded.

and both carmines... their death was talked about in game both times.
the issue is that you cant just throw a baby tantrum and show so much emotion and then have the gameplay disconnect from the story (far cry 3 story as an example)
Funnily enough, 8 months after launch, they made characters and classes separate lmfao
i remember that exact moment too, "im not going to cry over some stupid robot" they ruined the scene
I found enjoyment in gears 5 but I won’t dispute its flaws
For a first attempt at this style of video this was an extremely well made video would love to see you do a retrospective on 1-judgement
Shitlords gonna shitlord
@TeryonTheHuman in this case, that's more you than them. It's not crazy to feel a certain way about the entire atmosphere of the franchise being changed.
Doesn't mean you shouldn't give something a fair shot but that's like going from doom to Sunday school difference. There's gonna be a lot of questions.

@TeryonTheHuman I think "man"children is exaggerating. Most of us were children then.

I think they just need to kill kait right a the beginning of 6 or capture her and turn her into the queen against her will, get her out of the main role. Make JD, marcus, fahz and the last carmine brother be the main squad. Like they need her gone bad.
I’m hoping they completely remake gears 4 and 5. Change the swarm backstory etc
They started off the game pretty nice when you’re fighting the other humans, and then it turned into hippies shooting robots.
Still true today. Hope we get a trilogy remaster and a judgment remake.
It makes sense. He's White and Male. It's good for DEI targets to off him.
They have already ruined the series enough.

I got an achievement for keeping one of Marcus’s customized Lancers
If I could Rewrite Gears 5 I would do this:
I would maintain act one and the parts that have JD on it, I feel like the start Is quite good and seeing old and famiar places is good.
41:12 Fahz with no gun? lol, did you play this on PC or something? 😅
I’m on board for E-Day, but Gears 6 is doa for me. I’m pretty sure I can enjoy almost any prequal content they could do but they killed any future they make to the gears timeline.

I agree with 98% of what is said in this video, except for 2 things:
- I saved some times JD, because he's Marcus' son, and some times Del, because he's a cool character I respect as well.
Pity in gears 6 there must be a new character to fill the void of JD's or Del's death (which one is going to be canon?)
The game is very good, though, with dinamic combat and a variety of situations that makes it very interesting, that's why I keep playing it, from time to time, in spite of Kait.
