Is saturated fat modifying cholesterol, or is the marginal iron in the meat that comes with saturated fat modifying cholesterol because of the pervasive general iron overload / bio-copper depletion condition due to the toxic, inorganic rusty iron filings saturating the processed food supply?
Every person who has come into contact with Thomas always says how nice of a guy he is. And the fact that he reached out to Layne to do some content together after he made a debunk video of him speaks volumes to the kind of person he is.

I’m not actually a big fan of most of Thomas’ content. And I completely agree that Layne and Israetel are the 2 best in the business hands down.

Fasting changed my life. I'm not going back, just switching things up to keep the body guessing and I eat according to my exercise schedule and needs. Carb cycling which I learned from the great Tom Venuto.
All in balanced state. Some days you eat, other you fast, some days you lift, other days rest, some days take it easy with carbs other days 3 day fast.
People always go into black and white thinking which is not correct. It depends on the situation and the individual of what they need.
My great grandfather, grandfather, father and myself all had/have higher levels of LDL. I'm 60 and I have bloodwork all the way back to when I was 19 and joined the military. I've been on all the diets and the LDL range has little fluctuation. My great grandfather was extremely healthy and passed away peacefully at 96. My grandfather also worked his entire life and passed at 92. My father retired at 65, and religiously listened to his doctor. He was put on a low dose of statins, and was increased to a high level at aged 70. He had horrible side-effects, and was on the most bland diet imaginable. At 75 he had numerous health issues and at 77 he couldn't handle the pain and miserable life he had, and then took his own life. At 60, most guess I'm in my lower 40's, I can work hard all day at vigorous tasks, I hit the gym regularly and just enjoy life. If my LDL kills me a few years earlier, and I'm feeling good and enjoying life, I'll take it. It's better than stretching out a few more years in a miserable state of being.

There are many statins to choose from and alternatively other drugs (zetia, bempedoic acid, PCSK9 inhibitors). There's zero reason to live with high LDL these days.

It is such a pleasure to hear these two guys engage in an intelligent, civil, unashamedly nuanced discussion about topics that people love to get really heated, and really dogmatic, about. It gives me so much more respect--and affection--for both of them than I already had. Thank you, Thomas and Dr. Layne!
Agree! There are so many opinions from different nutrition camps out there right now, but we don't often see people together having civilised debates on videos. Most of the individuals who say going vegan or going carnivore radically improved their health all switched to these lifestyles after eating the standard crap western diet. I've yet to hear of anybody switching from grass fed meat to vegan, or vice versa, and feeling better. The point is when people improve the quality of their food, there is always positive results. People should focus on ditching the crap before worrying about placing themselves into these camps at opposite ends of the spectrum! We need more people like Layne and Thomas who aren't afraid to admit when they may have been wrong. It's a pity most doctors and health professionals don't adopt this mindset, instead of spewing out something they were thought 20 years ago. Science is constantly evolving, so should they.

One reason I will Fast a little bit at times is to shrink my stomach so I'm not inclined to eat too much & so I'm not hungry through the day. If my stomach is stretched, I'm wanting to eat alot more thru the day & I gain weight

Dave Feldman posted a 4:46 min video, today, titled "BREAKING - Match Analysis on LMHR Study Released" You'll change your mind again about high LDL.
I would rather wait for the full study analysis. That being said, these individuals are LEAN and that's incredibly protective against all cause mortality.

Fasting is also a valuable skill. In an emergency, we can miss a meal or 10 without losing our edge.
Next year Layne’s video on things he was wrong about and is changing his mind about: High LDL being a problem SPECIFICALLY with low carb diets. Cholesterol not raised through dietary saturated fat on low carbers, but is raised due to being lean.
This was probably recorded before the new study released by Dr Budoff where they compared high LDL LMHR keto vs low LDL Miami Heart study and found no difference in plaque accumulation after almost 5 years in 55 year olds with almost a complete match of all other health markers.
That study is now underscored by the second of a two-part study headed by amazing researcher Dave Feldman and Dr. Nick Norwitz, released just yesterday, Dec 8th '23. Their results revealed NO Atheroschlerosis (plaque) progression was found in 80 Lean Mass Hype Responders on a Keto diet. This is significant, because it is plaque, not LDL, that is by far the stronger indicator of poor cardiovascular health.
More investigation is needed into the role of HDL and its effects on the body - but let's not forget the name of the real culprit in all of the metabolic and cardiovascular ills modern man suffers stems from the overconsumption of such things as seed oils and carbs, i.e. SUGAR.
Saturated fats in no way causes insulin resistance. Please listen to Professor Ben Bikman,, Doctors Ken Berry, Eric Westman, Lustig, etc.

On top of that both cohorts in that study had more plaque at lower mean ldl levels. It sloped down on both cohorts as the plaque went up
@@burby_geekStatins were likely given to most of those people with high plaque in the Miami heart study. Correlation isn't causation. That's not to say I'm not hopeful the results of the full study are beneficial.
It's hysterical to me now that youtube is drowning in fasting content, everyone who once hailed it as the next coming of Christ are now moving on. Gotta keep that $ flowing, no matter what!
I haven’t followed UA-cam history. All I know is a high meat based keto diet plus intermittent fasting, plus a total of 12 days fasting( 2+2+2+3+3) took me from obese to six pack in 90 days. Now back bulking at day 110. I documented my weight loss on my channel. Plus I’m 45 and did it natty. There’s just no faster method than keto plus fasting in my opinion.

I don’t think I will go statins,I used to take one tab statins once a day,no side effects,for years, until one day I couldn’t move my Left arms full range that I cannot brush my hair, I saw an NP in doctors office she stopped my statin , after a week of not having that I am able to have a full range of motion in my arm. That’s it for me re statin.all of them gives me side effects suddenly ,except this last one that didn’t till one day after few years of taking it.
I love that layne is with thomas, I believe layne its very anti "experimental" science without very solid research behind first, while thomas likes to try if the science its pointing to one direction. so its nice they have a talk

Started carnivore and lost fat, hdl went from 45to67 triglycerides 115 to 70. My cholesterol went down a little total 270. Pain went away in hands and elbows. At 60 years old I feel much better.
And the same would have happend with a vegan diet or if you only would eat snickers in a caloric deficit.

Never taking a statin and have zero care factor for ldl levels as long as I eat whole foods and stay away from processed foods.
Layne had a genetic thing and the strain helps him.
The problem with Mendelian randomization studies is that it still does not correct for the fact the majority of the population is insulin resistant, which privides a unique physiology when compared to those that aren’t. It’s is very possible, and very likely when considering the data from lean mass hyper responders, that high LDL in the absence of inulin resistance is not as atherogenic as high LDL with insulin resistance.
This is an excellent point, and something I'd been wary of, as the Mendelian data seems to have had such an impact on the overall narrative, but as you say, it is still data collected in a vacuum. Relying so much on this has the potential to cause a lot of issues down the line.

Why does he just click bait yell about low level stuff when he's actually intelligent & could give us so much more as he proves over & over again in interviews? More of this Layne!
Totally agree with you. I enjoy Layne when he is on other youtube channels like Thomas's and Peter Attia but I don't like his vibe on his own channel. He is way too patronizing and cocky on his own channel. He seems so chills and humbling on other channels than his own.

Look at feldmans breaking analysis from 2 months ago, where sky high LDL keto participants showed no increased plaque burden at baseline after 5 years. Yes, it’s not a lifetime like mentioned in this video but 5 years is not insignificant for these findings. If this literature makes its way to him, he could change his mind again.

Arterial Plaque is made of misfolded proteins not cholesterol. The plaque is a shield the artery walls create to protect itself from inflamatory attacks not from too much calsium or cholesterol. Reasearch this yourself.

When will you interview the great Tom Venuto? He's one of the first great natural bodybuilders that made nutrition and exercise mainstream. I owe my life to him. Also learned carb cycling from him
Would love to see what his new lifestyle and protocols are. My take on fitness and health is that whatever the approach is in your day and age, it can work. Tom and many others followed old school protocols such as six small meals a day with little fats, and were able to reach their goals.
Those old school bodybuilders knew what works. Perhaps in terms of longevity, science has advanced more with how to optimize and definitely constant sugar spikes aren't the best. Nonetheless, Venuto keeps the basics in check. I'm trying to do fasting according to my exercise schedule and needs. Also, I cycle my carbs but stay keto because I feel better, carnivore type with some blueberries. Also doing 72hr once in a while. But it's because I'm fit now. I lost the weight through consistent 72hr fasts and longer. Easiest weight loss of my life.

Losing fat has nothing to do with carbs.
It’s about whether you expend the energy that you consume.
I compete in wrestling so I require a high carb diet.
Same with marathon runners, they usually get better times with more carbs.

Carbs are as much connected to weight loss as fats are.
You can gain weight by eating protein but it is incredibly difficult.

For me I eat between 150-300g carbs depending on when I’m competing in wrestling.
I prefer cutting around 4kg for each tournament.
In imperial measurements I walk around at 150-155 lbs and compete at 145 lbs.
Why no push back, the latest studies cited about same calories for two individuals same energy expenditure and same age and health factors show eating all your calories in an eating window of say 8 hours show blood markers Improving drastically across the board and they loose substantially more fat and maintain same amount of Muscle over the Individual who eats the same amount of calories eating 6 times a day!!!

It's weird to me that so many "experts" are now against fasting. After Attia mentioned something about losing muscle after fasting, everyone else fell like dominos. Even though, fasting is by far the best way to reduce insulin and blood glucose levels which I would think is far more important than losing a few grams of muscle from an intermittent fast...

They’re idiots. I’ve gained 25 lbs. of muscle in 3 years fasting 20 hours most days.

I don't fast for any of the reasons he suggests. I fast 16 hours every day because I want my body to metabolically shift from burning my glucose stores to burning my fat stores. I also do it to reduce inflammation throughout the body and most importantly in the brain. I fast because it makes me feel great and I seem to have much cleaner and long lasting energy. I also never feel hungry, and I'm not strict about caloric intake at all. I'm only strict on my 8 hour eating window. I've discovered that working out in a fasted state feels much better for me, but the downfall is that I cannot immediately follow my workout with protein because of the calories that come with it. So for that reason I supplement with perfect aminos.
I found the saturated fat and cholesterol stuff a bit confusing and all over the place.
With both diet and training I use periodization and macro/calorie counts as guidelines.
Life fluctuates far too much to be rigidly locked into one diet or training system.
They can get you pointed in the right direction and give you a goal to shoot for and a yard stick against which to measure progress.
At the end of the day results are what count.

Every 6-10 months I can’t digest food as well and I start getting bloated after meals. I fast for 1-4 days and bam I can eat even more food than before the fast no problem and I end up able to put on more size and weight than pre-fast as fast as a week after the fast.
17:55 it’s not about whether ldl is oxidized or not, it’s about whether endothelial lining is smooth or not. Unoxidized ldl does not penetrate smooth endothelial lining

I've seen some people stating (of course they refer to some studies) that LDL is not related to coronary artery calcification in people that eat a good diet (no junk food) with high fat content (mainly from meat). And that coronary artery calcification is a better predictor of heart disease. What are your views on that?

Hey Thomas.. I’ve been falling back on your content for all things Nutrition.. been watching you since 2017 when I went keto and lost 70lbs over a year. Also corrected my Blood sugar, High BP, fatty liver and overall energy levels. But since then I’ve been increasing carbs and haven’t been able to maintain my weight (thankfully other markers are still in normal range)- major carb addict here, I’m ashamed to say.. life’s ups and downs affect my ability to eat well. All the science debunking the state of ketosis, low carb, fasting doesn’t make sense to me, coz I do well on low carb! Am I the outlier?
Whatever works for you, stick with it. Your body will tell you what it wants. I did the Tim Ferriss slow carb diet years ago and going off of that, tracking macros and experimenting with eating different types of carbs (no junk food items) I found that the slow carb rules actually work best for me. Following new diets just for the sake of trying it is a waste of time imo. If you feel great and look great then you're doing something right.
What kind of carbs? Ultra processed food and grains are not the good carbs to eat. They lead to weight gain.

I would love one of you guys to discuss how the following affects the estimate of type of fat intake assigned in the various studies. I don't have the data in front of me, so these are the basics of what I recall. Beef fat is like forty percent polyunsaturated fat. Olive oil is like eight percent saturated fat. Other sources of fat are combinations of the saturated/unsaturated fat mix. When cooking the beef, higher type fat shares in hamburger are more likely to be left in the pan vs ninety percent lean. Well done meat will have less fat in what is consumed vs rare . Does cooking affect the final saturated/unsaturated fat ratio in the fat that remains? Take-away- many human studies don't track the actual number of grams of the exact types of fat that each person consumes. It would be impossible unless they were given fully analyzed meals prepared in specific procedures. Raw food would be easier to account for actual fat that is consumed. Studies should state i.e that the high saturated fat group averaged 55% of their fat intake as saturated with a sd of 11% and the high unsaturated fat group consumed 22% of fat as saturated with a sd of 8%.Since they usually don't state this, I assume that they don't know this bit of important information. So much noise the the fat measures in human studies.
One thing that's rarely brought up is the variation in metabolism and physical activity among people and also the population data that the studies rely on. For myself i work in construction and do cardio and strength nearly every day on top of that. Missing a meal and i'm basically out. I eat calorie dense food every 3 hours. But an overweight person with a desk job and low activity would probably do great with fasting.

The I get into exercise science and nutrition. The more I realize that intuition and the bro science are right. The main problem with diet nutrition and exercise is people start camping and rallying ideas and take things way to far in an extreme. At the end of the day balance is what matters and intuitive training and diet typically wins all. Preaching against red meat and meat in general is bad. Intuitively we know humans ate meat for a long time. Meat is muscle. Eating muscle will grow muscle it’s very obvious. Only eating meat is not good. Why would we crave carbs if carbs were evil. But think about how much work it used to take to make bread It doesn’t grow on trees. Carbs are too easy to find now. Previously we needed high motivation to seek carbs because it was hard to find. Now it’s easy to find. Everything comes down to nature
I've always heard "cardio makes hungry and crave more food". Even my PCP told me this a few months ago. I'm experiencing the opposite effect. After running 4-6 miles and especially when i go the full 6 miles, I drink so much water right after that I feel bloated. Add to that the sort of general physical exhaustion running causes it completely kills my appetite where I have to force myself to eat sometimes well into the next day. The first early meal the next day can make me feel full for 8-10 hrs and I have to force myself to eat.
Regarding what was said on fasting, I'm defnitiy someone who likes to lift or run on an empty stumach, but that is only 2-4 hours after a meal not 12-16 hours.

I loved the video, but I think we always focus too much on lean muscle mass and fat loss. I would love to see a video on how to maximise the other benefits of exercise, like increase bdnf
Firstly, thank you both for admitting that your opinion changes because our opinion of science can only be correct based off the information currently available to us, and even then what we think we may know could be completely incorrect! (though hopefully not!)
Secondly, Layne Norton, you say that when you exercise your BMR goes down, just to clarify, do you mean predominant fat loss exercise such as cardio?
Because if you exercise by way of weight training and build muscle then of course your BMR goes up, obviously important to say to viewers that eveeeeeennnn if there's an ever so slight BMR reduction by way of the exercise induced calorie loss, such as by way of weight training, the increase in BMR from the built muscle will exceed any loss from exercise induced calorie loss - hence people who focus on weight training and build a lot of muscle can eat far higher calories than people who don't:) It's obviously important to clarify this for viewers who may wrongly believe that any and all exercise will reduce BMR and become fearful to exercise as I can imagine that will become a thing!

You can experiment on me I am doing sport after 14 hours fasting and don’t eat until the next 6 hours. It means total 20hours without any water and food…then I have 1 hour window to drink my homemade juice with an entire lemon 100g with kale 50g and ginger 15g all of it with one liter of water. Then the rest 3 hours i have a clean keto meal and i build muscle according my MBI
When it comes to cholesterol ,LDL, and all those issues I rather listen to Dr. Robert Lustig, Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Jamnadas a cardiologist that LDL is not the determination of heart attack,I’m not a doctor but just listening to the experts.

Diatary cholesterol has a huge influence on blood lipids. I used Ezetimibe that ONLY blocks dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol plummented.
Might not be true for everyone but do not underestimate this - especially in people that already optimized all other components of their diet and training.
There are certain snips of genetics that cause failure of certain things regulating your cholesterol absorption. You can test for plant sterols/phytosterols in blood to see if they are malfunctional. Super high HDL can also be an indicator.
I feel triglycerides are more the problem than LDL. Did these trials control for trigs? If you have high (ish) levels of LDL but super low trigs I feel that a very different story than high LDL high trigs?
