I remember a recruit managed to sneak out one night. He walked out during his firewatch shift, hopped the fence, and was actually able to make it out to civilization, albeit scuffed up from the trees and barbed wire. Although he was quickly identified because he tried to buy something with his ez pay card.

When exactly did The Corps go to this weird flat foot way of marching? We marched entirely differently in '75 when i went thru Parris Island...it was drilled into us to strike the ground with your heels....the DI's would always scream HEELS, HEELS, HEELS as we marched and we sounded like thunder marching between the old 3rd Battalion barracks. I have a funny story from one of our first close order drill sessions on PI in 1st Phase. We have starte dto learn to march and the DI is giving us cadence and he is yelling, You ARE Bouncing Ladies!!!! So he halts us and asks for a show of hands for anyone who was in rotc...about 5 or 6 recruits raise their hands. He calls them front and center. I am thinking that maybe he is going to ask them to demonstrate how we are supposed to march...lol, but instead the DI starts screaming at them with "you Goddamn rotc motherfuckers, you know just enough to fuck everything up. This ain't fucking rotc, thois is Marine Corps Boot Camp, if you don't start marching the way I tell you to march I'm going to PT this whole fucking platoon to death, on your account"...it gave me an internal smile!

I was asked a day before graduation by my SDI because of my age what was the one thing I would change about Boot Camp if I could. And I still to this day stand by it, the focus on drill. Drill is a beautiful thing by those who have mastered it. But for Boot Camp, I always felt the times we were out there trying to "perfect" the movements could of been better used in other aspects that we will actually use in some context in the fleet or the field. If I had to guess, rough estimate, out of the three months of Boot Camp, almost a month was used to drill. I would of much preferred being on the long rope, or running the courses, learning more in swim qual, shit even McMaps which was a joke in itself if you have any real BG in Boxing or Wrestling. My SDI stated it instilled discipline and the attention to detail aspect of being a Marine. In my response and opinion the threat of being dragged to an IT session or getting smoked period after a long day of firing on all cylinders for fucking up was an even greater tool to use to instill that discipline.
