It was largely a set-up to take attention off calling for a pause on announcing the electoral vote in order to investigate all the discrepancies, fraud & judges bypassing legislatures with completely new election rules that allowed hundreds of thousands of invalid ballots that would have been immediately disqualified in any other election (claiming that Covid somehow granted them this authority they NEVER had).
That was the business in the House that was obstructed by the riot. And the Democrats' plan worked better than expected. Later that night, when Congress resumed to discuss the election - as Republicans presented reams of hard evidence, they were shouted down by Democrats screaming "INSURRECTION!" and claiming Republicans had no right to talk about election results after they'd all almost lost their lives (according to Democrats) just hours after a 4 hour protest that turned into a riot (only after capitol police began firing tear gas & stun grenades at the protesters).

Pelosi did not want adequate protection of the capital because she wanted the situation to get out of hand in a hurry. That way it looks like an insurrection, which of course Trump would be responsible for. The people at the Capitol were protesting the results of the election and we still do.
