AR15 Muzzle Device Will Not Thread on Barrel - FIXED

  • A new McGowen custom barrel and a new Tromix linear comp are not playing together well.
I ran a tap all the way through the Tromix comp - including cutting new threads to ensure the tap made it all the way through.
My tool room guy at the shop was able to lend me a thread file and I used it to work on the threads until the comp would go all the way onto the barrel.
It appears I am starring in this video in the mirror! Oh well it is a new set with new problems.

Tromix makes really good products. Tony is a master machinist and would never turn threads that were that out of spec. That's clearly a barrel manufacturing problem. My best guess is a bit broke during the threading, which caused it to go shallow at the tail-end. Just my opinion. Echo

DON'T DO ANYTHING until you know that the muzzle threads are the problem. It's easy to confirm that the threads are either within spec or are not within spec using a micrometer and thread measuring wires. Don't go filing on the threads until you know that they need work. Also, hand filing can easily cause the threads to become out of concentricity with the bore. This could cause a catastrophic baffle strike! If the muzzle threads are indeed out of spec, send it back to the manufacturer. They should stand behind their work. Muzzle threads should be class 3. Machinery's handbook has the specs.

If you watch the video, you'll note know we chased the threads on the muzzle device with a brand new tap and it didn't remove any meaningful material. That's how we knew our muzzle threads had shallow roots. Lacking a die, we used a thread conditioning file.
Regardless if you use thread wires, if you have to touch those threads your concentricity is at stake, although not nearly to the alarming level you are trying to imply.
The manufacturer offered to take the barrel back, I declined and cleaned up the roots myself and things work fine.

@@shortreloadingvideos7571 Fair enough. You obviously have experience where other may not. Its just that some muzzle devices can have minimal clearance. Don't want anyone to get hurt.

nice fix, it's a wonder there are not more cases of 'fit and finish' with all the different companies matching parts up through a chart of dimensions

Can these be used on the internal threads of the muzzle device?
Tank brake for my 12.7x42 BCA .50 Beowulf barrel. Thread pitch 49/64x20 😵 it’s so hard to find the right tools. I have a bca flash hider that fit like a glove, not sure why the tank brake only give one turn before stopping. This happened before with a different make muzzle brake.

you would need a tap unfortunately.

Update! The threads on my barrel were a higher grade. I got the idea from you to lightly file down the peaks. It’s fits like a glove bro! It’s soo ridiculous! Aero upper with a made by me lower 7.5 inch barrel, superlative arms adjustable gas block, radian switch and SL raptor charging handle, radian talon saftey, strike industries lower receiver kit, aero chrome plated phosphate bcg, rubber city armory bolt, armaspec h3 captured buffer/spring with the strongest spring. And a cheap air lock 7 inch hand guard. Thanks for your help!

How does this method compare to using a die and running it through the threads of the barrel?

    • @shortreloadingvideos7571
      @shortreloadingvideos7571  2 роки тому +2

I am sure doing that would have resolved this issue probably better than what I was able to do, but I had this tool available to me and I tried it first, and it was good enough.
If you have the die, that would be a much better first choice!

@@shortreloadingvideos7571 it worked perfectly! I just ran it through the threading back and fortha few times and everything threaded on just fine after that. No problems since. I can even use plumbers tape for direct thread suppressors like on barrels with less slop in the threading. Can confirm this method works.
