AR15 Muzzle Device Will Not Thread on Barrel - FIXED
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
A new McGowen custom barrel and a new Tromix linear comp are not playing together well. I ran a tap all the way through the Tromix comp - including cutting new threads to ensure the tap made it all the way through. My tool room guy at the shop was able to lend me a thread file and I used it to work on the threads until the comp would go all the way onto the barrel. It appears I am starring in t...
Mixed Headstamp Considerations - resizing and case forming
Переглядів 1 тис.4 роки тому
This video is about different brass alloys creating differences in the resizing process, and the reforming process for formed cases. Hope you found this interesting, this is a topic of much debate and there are many variables at play most of the time. I was able to limit the variables to the different brass and a slightly different charge (between the factory ammo and my handloads), both of whi...

The Picatinny Rail aka MIL-STD-1913 rail aka some cancelled STANAG number rail Just an overview of what it is. It is similar but not the same as a weaver mount, the parts may or may not work between them, I'm sure you can find information on that somewhere. Special guest: Keymod!

Trying two alternative methods for checking cartridge head spacing
Переглядів 1014 роки тому
Make sure my videos play in HD, they are uploaded in 1080 but a lot of the time they start in 480 for me for some reason. In this video I wanted to show you two methods for trying to figure out approximate head space when comparing a newly formed case versus fire formed cases. This is not necessary when you have common cartridges and case gauges are widely available. I will admit the chamber me...
High Pressure Signs in a Rifle Cartridge
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I show you what high pressure signs look like. One thing I did not mention in the video, but you can see the black ring around the primer, the primer failed to seal the pocket. This case was close to giving up the ghost. Many new reloaders or people who stay within the book limits don't ever see pressure signs, and they have trouble knowing what those signs look like, I hope this ...
Necking up a cartridge to create a wildcat cartridge
Переглядів 4,3 тис.4 роки тому
When forming new cartridges out of parent cases, there will always be cases that fail to form properly. I have lost quite a few cases to this conversion, and I wanted to find a way to stop losing so many. I show in this video the sort of things you have to figure out when you have limited tools but a desire to shoot a wildcat cartridge. I've necked up 308 to 358 with no issues before, I think t...

Installing an AR15 Barrel with a Bedding Shim
Переглядів 11 тис.4 роки тому
I show how I bed my AR15 barrels to reduce play between the surfaces of the barrel extension and the upper receiver. Bat Machine Co and others make oversized extensions that can require a thermal fit between the two parts. That is obviously a better option, but I am not equipped to install a new extension or headspace it to the existing chambering in the barrel etc, and this costs about three d...
Barrel Break-In Part 2 and First Tac 30 Firing
Переглядів 1194 роки тому
First upload had video issues. Continuing to break in the stainless 6.8 SPC II barrel. The clean outs are quicker and easier which is the goal of the break-in procedure. The Tac 30 case was way too small, but it fired without an issue and now I have a fireformed master case to make more cases against. Hope you enjoyed this video, let me know in the comments what you'd like to see on this channel.
How to do a single step wildcat - First Tac 30 reformed case
Переглядів 7044 роки тому
A note: You push the carrier forward as far as it will go, once the bolt rotates you will stop at some point, that point is where the case shoulder hits the chamber wall. If your carrier is not all the way forward you need to resize further. This sort of manual head spacing is only required for initial sizing, and you just need to be close. After initial firing the idea is to just bump the shou...

How to set up RCBS Handheld Case Neck Turning kit
Hello from Denmark, and thank you for the advice :-) - oh, and 50 bucks is a mighty good price!! :) Due to the limited ammo availability of the cartridges i use, might have to start reloading soon, but a new rock chucker is almost 400 USD here in Denmark, and a foster co-ax is 600 plus USD. And it is not easy finding something decently priced used here either. Maybe for a beginner keeping it simple intially, with a single stage press, is advantagous, in order to stay on top of each step of the reloading process, and get comfortable with it.👍
thank you :)
THIS CRAP GIVES R'LOADING A BAD RAP!!!!!!!!!
the solution is buy a new barrel
If you have an extremely rare Gen 1 Glock barrel, yes
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 not a glock fanboy here, but my opinion is glock chambers are loose, and thats what I have gathered from listening to other reloaders that bulge bust their cases, just my .02
this piece of shit doesn't work in real life. at all. don't piss your money away on it, or anything rcbs.
Have a question crimped 10 bullets ;9mm , and I could spin the bullet with my finger on the brass. The Crip looks good , I Purchased these dies used at a pawnshop. they are RCS carbide dies . I think maybe the crimping Die wore out What would be your opinion?
I've heard of it before, I think generally it's due to too much flare or the sizing is not squeezing the case down enough during the initial sizing.
Excellent! Info!
Thanks so much for the info. This helped me out a lot
I’ve got a 24” 6mm arc and shooting suppressed. Still will not cycle and I have a new aero adjustable gas block brand new BCG and gas tube. I guess this is my next step
Good luck!!
Simple way, but I have bad arthritic hands.
I thought it was caused by having sizing die too far down. and lack of space squeezing into bulging inward. man I really didn't think I was using too much lube. all of a sudden I can't get 223 to fit the gauges, it's driving me crazy!
if you get into especially used 556 ammo that might have been in a machine gun, they are blown out really huge and sometimes take a second resizing to get down to size to fit those plunk gages.
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 interesting. I didn't consider that. thanks!
I have been trying to load 223 but always ran into the taper crimp absalutly destroying the sholder. It sucks.
unfortunately, they have to be the exact same length for a taper die to work problem free.
Knew this video was old when he said primer was only worth 4-5 cents. It’s now twice that.
Oh boo! Yes "Putin's Price Hike" has been hard on us all! :P
This is horrible info about someone who DOESN'T KNOW what he's talking about concerning Glock Bulge!
lol perfect
Very nice video! This doesn’t crimp does it?
That's right, no crimp detail machined into the die body, they expect you to either not crimp or to use their factory crimp die.
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 awesome thank you didn’t want any crimp so this is perfect!
Great Video!!!
I had trouble with 300 blk out. People that sell barrels dont tell gas port size but some do. I found gas port size is all over the map. I bought one barrel where they stated they opened them up because manufacturer made the port to small.
some barrels seem to be anticipating a suppressor on them, which would generally require less of a gas port. Seems silly to me to not err on the larger side, overgas the gun and let people put an adjustable on it to lower the volume.
DON'T DO ANYTHING until you know that the muzzle threads are the problem. It's easy to confirm that the threads are either within spec or are not within spec using a micrometer and thread measuring wires. Don't go filing on the threads until you know that they need work. Also, hand filing can easily cause the threads to become out of concentricity with the bore. This could cause a catastrophic baffle strike! If the muzzle threads are indeed out of spec, send it back to the manufacturer. They should stand behind their work. Muzzle threads should be class 3. Machinery's handbook has the specs.
If you watch the video, you'll note know we chased the threads on the muzzle device with a brand new tap and it didn't remove any meaningful material. That's how we knew our muzzle threads had shallow roots. Lacking a die, we used a thread conditioning file. Regardless if you use thread wires, if you have to touch those threads your concentricity is at stake, although not nearly to the alarming level you are trying to imply. The manufacturer offered to take the barrel back, I declined and cleaned up the roots myself and things work fine.
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 Fair enough. You obviously have experience where other may not. Its just that some muzzle devices can have minimal clearance. Don't want anyone to get hurt.
I tried this idea a few years ago. It made my BCG all ickey and barely able to charge it. I ended up with an adjustable gas block and a 3oz buffer. It was for 300BO.
I'm glad it worked for you, however, a fixed gas block provides more gas than an adjustable, as adjustables can only by definition go down from 100%. The buffer change likely helped a lot.
I made my own RCBS style, collet, bullet puller. Why? I have to do something with those damn machinist machines I bought! 😁 The bullet puller works great. I have a collet for .308 and .224. I do not get any collet marks on the bullets I pull. I'm wondering why yours does that.
I was having a lot of double feeds and a lot of short stroking on my new m&p10. I'm not comfortable with shipping my gun across the us so I decided to take it apart myself. The port was only a 1/16 of an inch big. Research showed that it needed to be 5/64 of an inch big. Any thoughts?
sounds like it's not large enough. The area of a 1/16 diameter circle is 0.003068 The area of a 5/64 diameter circle is 0.004794 That is 36% less area. If you drill the barrel out too large and over gas it, you'd have to put an adjustable gas block on it and turn it down a little and it would be fine. I'd put the drill to it myself and step it up a little. It's not too difficult as you already have a large pilot hole, just protect the bore and go slow.
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 that's exactly what I did. I drilled it out to 5/64 and made sure to clean it thoroughly. I'll be taking it out to the range next weekend. I'll update you on how it went if you'd like.
@@ehd1990 absolutely would like you to let us know how it goes.
Is your press a Reloader Special or JR? Great videos!
Both of them are Jr's, I think JR iii’s but one is a 72 and one is a 77
Thanks for the info, slightly filed the cases and it worked like a charm
You're welcome thanks for watching :)
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 I also used fine sand paper and went around the case head and that worked on some of them
You don't have Glock bulge but if you do get a new barrel. Got it.
I don't remember suggesting you get a new barrel, but if you have a gen 1 glock barrel or some aftermarket junk it's technically possible you might want to get a new one.
Amazon has some really inexpensive ($20-30)5mm diameter wifi/bluetooth dual camera borescopes that allow you to look through the barrel to check the gas block alignment. Saved me tons of frustrations with gas block alignment.
I’ve used a piece of spaghetti before and it worked
How do you go about the other end of this, i.e. making a gun to fit the cartridge?
Well part of the deal is to use a full length sizing die once you're done forming, trying to not size it too small. Once it fits in the chamber snugly, the fireforming it will make it fit right. Some people use powder and a filler, I just load it up mildly for most of what I do. Once it's been fired once, you can use it however you'd like in my opinion.

So what should a beginner get for a set 3 or 4 dies. I need a 6.5 creedmoor and 300 win mag set? Thanks
I like 2 die sets for bottleneck rifle cases. Personally I like Lee's seating dies and RCBS' sizing dies. Maybe get one from Lee and one from RCBS and see what you think. Note: RCBS didn't used to and probably still does not send you a shell holder with the die set. The extra dies are either neck sizing dies, which I never use or crimp dies which I don't often use. If you find the 3 die set for the same cost as a 2 die set, I'd go for it, but I wouldn't probably hardly ever use that extra die.
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 thanks
I have 38 special dillion press dies. I think I should be able to load 9mm ammo with 9mm bullets (berry's cased 147g) into 9mm brass cases with the 38 special dies and crimp. Has anyone heard of that working?
the worst way to drill a gas port ..use pin gauges, not a vernier.
Worked well too
I had one of those from the 60s. Nicely made, but not very good for small charges or stick powder.
True, stick powders are tricky. I have had okay luck with pistol charges but I'm a little scared of them at the same time.
If you don't have shim all around the barrel extension, aren't you forcing the barrel off center?
I don't think the bolt barrel is indicated to the bolt, which floats, so possibly yes and possibly no.
Great video and great information
I like the hand grip hardware, what company makes that? Thanks
That is a PRI Delta
Got an upper with a 10.5 FN button cut barrel with the same issue, going to try and take it up to .070 and see what happens
I think I have it with a 45 Raptor right now, probably going to drill it out
I think the Lee fdc is totally dependent on case length. If your cases are different lengths, the crimp will be erratic and you may even miss a crimp if the case is too short.
Trim your cases. Im sure proplem solved
Depending on the trash you’re using some will be too long and some will be under what you’re trimming to and when that happens your problem will not be solved.
Great video! I have a couple of home builds that I KNOW I have eliminated all other issues and this is what I need to do. Do you need to use a cobalt drill bit?
No I used cheapo Walmart drills and they worked well. You’re not removing much at a time they will make it
Thank you
always use drill bit to ck hole size,if not cycling, drill bigger .010 bigger then test,if u get big as .100 inch,ck 4 other problems,i had to take a .110 out on an ar10/bc 308,n it worked perfect, may be too big, but,i'm goin to order adj blk antway, shells landing at 4 o;clock/good w/ my reloads, may need to slow down w/other loads, most ar15 bbrls r drilled bout .060 frm factury, dep on gas leanth have fun
Great video and great information
Soo can use 380 and my gunhand 9mm yes or not
That Is the RCBS 5-10 scale, not the 505.
Sweet I will update the title to include both model numbers
@@shortreloadingvideos7571 The model 10-10 and the 5-10 use the same Ballance beam with the rotary 10ths adjustment, the 10-10 has the capacity to weigh up to 1.000 grs with a counter weight that is suspended from a post in the small hole up next to the pointer. However, the scale you have is the same other than having that capacity , that post and the Base that the 10-10 has. I have Two 5-10 scales and they are precise, easy to use, and well made. I have found that the 5-10 is all really someone needs because weights exceeding 500 Grs is rare in powder and projectiles. You will get many, many years of precision use out of that scale. Have a good one - Dave
Just started on 9mm. Are there certain recommended brass manufacturers? I have mixed. Some hold the bullet well, others the bullet actually slides in to easy and works itself really low in the case. 🤷♂️
I'm sure there are higher quality brass makers but I have not experienced much issue with any of the head stamps I've had. I do know some are barely at minimum height and others are a lot taller, which can be a pain.
This is great info. I have a dream project of necking 5.56 up to 6.5. I think it could be interesting!
totally forgot about the ballast weight in the container under the pan. For some reason over the years, my scale was slightly heavier when everything was set to zero. I found several different sizes of metal pellets in the ballast container. By trial and error, I removed the correct amount to get the beam to settle closer to zero than before with the scale itself more level on the base as well. Then I made a slight up and down adjustment on the base adjustment foot, located on the bottom left end. Now its perfectly zero when the slide and the micro adjustments are set to zero. Thanks for the video!
Can these be used on the internal threads of the muzzle device? Tank brake for my 12.7x42 BCA .50 Beowulf barrel. Thread pitch 49/64x20 😵 it’s so hard to find the right tools. I have a bca flash hider that fit like a glove, not sure why the tank brake only give one turn before stopping. This happened before with a different make muzzle brake.
you would need a tap unfortunately.
Update! The threads on my barrel were a higher grade. I got the idea from you to lightly file down the peaks. It’s fits like a glove bro! It’s soo ridiculous! Man, friend, let me give you a good piece of advice if you want to build a good following on UA-cam. Rehearsals are good for calming nerves and getting mistakes out of your viewer's sight. You also need to choose your words correctly, or you don't look like you know what you are talking about. It is a case neck turner and trims the case neck into outside uniformity in thickness with the inside of the case. Not a "tarimmering" as you made a word out of trimmer and turner. It is a totally different process than lapping is for a scope or anything else. You're running your drill way too fast, which can cause a burn in your brass. You have a good idea, just slow down and get things together. I have used neck turning to get single digit groups!
My friend, I don't care :)
