What a pleasure for us to be a part!
PCBWay has a cool shared projects section on its website. "Nice."
Take a shot every time, the sponsor is mentioned
I tried this, I got so drunk I couldn't even type in "pcbway.com" the website of today's sponsor!
Now that I know PCBWay is Chinese, every time I hear you mention PCBWay I imagine '"PCB" Wei', the founder and proprietor, and the individual who makes every single motherboard. PCB Wei is one hell of a man.
Bahahaha. They're the most expensive place to get boards made. Jl is cheaper if you haven't boycotted China. Pcbway will sponsor knitting channels haha
@@jstro-hobbytech Just out of curiosity, what is the best place to get boards made if you have boycotted China?
Whatta Man, was En Vogue featuring Salt-N-Pepa TLC is probably best known for No Scrubs and Waterfalls
Oh right. I didn't realize En Vogue was involved but it makes sense now that you say it. I didn't have MTV growing up.
"Whatta Man" is by En Vogue and salt and pepper. T.L.C. did "Waterfalls", and "No Scrubs" Great Tutorial.
Ben is a man of culture indeed. First DSP, now a Sega Lord X shoutout!
Dsp is like watching the "bad ending" of a UA-camr.
37:00 TLC (T-Boz, Left Eye and Chili) were a fantastic 90's band! The had many hits like Creep, Waterfalls and No Scrubs. "Whatta Man" was actually by Salt-N-Pepa. same time period more or less lol. why did i remember the members of TLC after all these years... too much MTV as a kid
Whatever happened to them? And Toni Braxton. She used to be huge!
I like making the annual rings on the through hole pads larger, it helps get better contact to the soldering iron and heat up faster. Makes it easier for newer people or people with chunky soldering tips.
My brain wants more flux
14:09 A brat in the hand is worth two on the grill... (old Wisconsinite proverb)
TLC most famous song is "Waterfalls". The song "What a Man" is from Salt N' Pepa feat. N Vogue.
You can remove the pads you don't want soldered from the paste stencil gerber. Great project!
PCB-way, where the PCB costs $1 but the shipping is >$20.
The sound of breaking those boards apart is indescribably wonderful.
This is pretty awesome. I'd probably choose to use the heat gun and paste for some of the components but it looks like it would be a decent project for beginners. Very nice. 👍
Super cool project Ben!
TLC was Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls...
What A Man was En Vogue and apparently Salt N Pepa... as someone else pointed out.
Fun fact: the record label screwed TLC so badly on their contract they only got paid $10k each for that album, in total.
Seller: Do you want a good Game console?
Ben: I DON'T NEED A GAME CONSOLE, I BUILD MY OWN GAME CONSOLES!
Wow, never managed to catch a Ben Heck video this early. Hi, Ben! Give Bud a treat, or an empty carboard box.
So early it's only available in 360p
Congrats on the sponsorship
This looks excellent. I really enjoyed the z80 one (your signature rubbed off unfortunately) but it having a pico and SD card makes it super flexible, and I love that you guys already have emulation working. The NES sound library might help us with the Neo6502 project now I think about it ...
it's a Ben Boy!
That Sega Aladdin game is hard as hell. I never got past the Cave of Wonders as a kid. I downloaded it recently, and even with save spamming, I'm struggling to get much farther.
Very Kool ben🎉
that thing is sick
Wow v3 has major overhaul on the design, coolest looking one yet.
Not really. We just bodged in an SD card.
this was the most anxiety inducing soldering video I've seen in a while 😆
TLC is most known for "Don't go Chasin Waterfalls" I think. The movie "The Other Guys" starring Will Ferrell and Marky Mark had a bit that beat TLC references to death in a funny way.
What a Man was Linda Lyndell in 1968, and I refuse to acknowledge otherwise 😂
What! haha no love for Salt-N-Pepa or En Vogue
@patprop74 They're both fine examples of their time and genre. Not specifically my preferred music, but both definitely have a few "earbugs" you have to play on repeat a couple times every once in a while. What a Man just felt like playing the original song in the background and overlaying a rap (if that's the correct term) on top. I haven't heard the cover in years though, I could be misremembering the details.
shared Ben Your Awesome
| Awesome ! | :3
I'd love to build one of those but I can't make it to Milwaukee, so maybe I can take a look at your files. So cool that you offer all of that up.
I'm pretty sure you're right about TLC.
RIP Left Eye from TLC. :-(
It would be nice if you just sold the kits online..... please.....?
Nice build. Needs a 3" screen.
Could you use a Gerber editor to provide a custom paste layer for the parts you want them to install?
I have a flux pen for when pins are close. Maybe it's my imagination but if I use the flux it does not bridge like that. Even with too much solder it just makes huge balls that don't touch.
It aint your imagination, everybody who can solder well knows this as a fact.
Cool
Can you sell these kits please?
Teeboz
LeftEye
Chilli
I’d eventually like to own one of these.
I’d enjoy seeing a new Austin Powers movie.
I see your PCBs are tight! Tight like a tiger!
Curious what size tack tile buttons are you using in this build?
_"You save big money! You save. big. money... When you shop Menaaaard's!"_
Did Wisconsin's Menard's commercials also have the old white-haired guy who was their spokesman, with the literal crooked smile due to his lower jaw being out of alignment?? 🥴 (Would've been 90s through early-00s.)
As I looked him up now, I assume yours must have as well, as it turns out he was a Vizconsin Native.
I liked him though, he was wholesome.
RIP Ray!
That guy died ages ago.
@@BenHeckHacks 2018 according to my search when I posted that. I actually wouldn't guessed more like 2008, so *far more* recent than I had thought.
Bud is blinking LOL!
"And clunk. That was a good clunk!" - Arcus
Apparently no reference is too obscure!
The legendary cowboy
8:14 "Secret Princess And Her Oppressive Authority Figure 4"
35:24 HOA DOA
damn no flux, doing it live
it is unfortunate our reliance
damn this gamebadge is op, lot going on "hey want a free pico?" haha only $4 guess not bad
oh the workshop is not free that makes sense, I was like damn that's a lot of parts
it's great when it just comes together, like that melt idea
gotta love that immediate start not like a full os
TLC had that song that got annoyingly overplayed on the radio called Waterfalls.
Truly. I hate that song. It was never good in the first place, then was played WAYYYYYYYYY too much.
Waterfalls yo.
Wow Ben heck is a poor man's savage lol ❤
Bad batch of leds? Did you try turning it around? I've had them with the leads and flats backwards.
I normally tent small vias. It's free where I order PCBs, probably free on PCBWAY too. (?)
The loose battery leads in these videos always guarantee excitement.
I think PCBWay fills vias with mask as an option but you have to pick it and they charge a bit extra. Idk how much but I've tested it using vias for makeshift ground returns and it works quite well. Now I sink vias right near bus pins I haven't ever bridged one
I built my 3B the other day and it’s awesome! I haven’t done the emulation yet, only Badgeris and Catskillvania. Do you have links to Ken‘s channel?
youtube.com/@whatskenmaking
I was planning on doing the emulation video a little closer to MGC, but I guess I gotta do it sooner now that Ben committed me 😆
We have a few emulators working, but I’m still working out bugs. The most stable is C64 - it still needs some work, but I can push what I have into the repo sometime this week. Keep an eye out for an emulators folder in there. I probably won’t have a video ready until near the end of March, but I’ll write up some steps for installing the emulators and put it in the wiki.
@@whatskenmaking Looking forward to it - no rush though, need time before MGC to master Catskillvania and Badgeris :) Heck I‘m still working on Moon Patrol
@@joeostrander ha, I still play Moon Force on my gameBadge2! At some point in Badgeris, you'll hit a physical limitation where you can't press the button fast enough to overcome the gravity of the falling pieces. I don't remember the algorithm I used, exactly (I haven't touched the code since last year), but I modeled it after the NES version. Having the smaller screen, though, caused me to have to increase gravity at a faster rate than the NES version
Not enough flux? Louis Rossmann said: LOT OF FLUX!
31:22 Encase it in crystallized carbon, and you just might have a chance of it lasting. Diamond does not decompose with time .
Thinner solder would be better. I have a selection of solder wire diameters for that reason.
Condo of Bud!
I like my PCBs to fit like toigers. Toight.
tight like a tiger!
could not the sd card been put on at ~PCB making stage with the rest of the smaller parts where added
No room. Easiest solution was... What I did.
Meow, yes his name is Bud
A Bud is a cat that can't get in the room with me
Tearin' up the whole backside side of my swivel chair hide
Beggin' for greenies from me
Seeing as someone else was paying for the boards, you could have gone with gold pads (She's a bobby dazzler)!! And then as mentioned by others - tweak the gerbers to only have the passives you needed in the stencil layer. Also - tented vias, chicken dinner!
Hold your breathe I just farted ~😘
Clean your boards from flux, ben.
I want to do one 😢
What!? No gameplay footage of Condo of Bud? I want my money back!
11:54 Did you check with polarity both ways? I got some LEDs that had the polarity backwards. I thought I was losing my mind.
8:25 Four decimal places ?
Now I want to play Condo of Bud.
Condo of Bud was inspired by all the building being torn down to make condos here in Madison.
It is truly the finest game about a cat fighting robots in a condo programmed in two months ever made.
@BenHeckHacks I'm going to quote you so you can quote me as "Fan on UA-cam" for any marketing materials:
It is truly the finest game about a cat fighting robots in a condo programmed in two months ever made. - Ben Heck
It's better that you did.... questionable solder point placement for educational purposes! It's a feature for learning!
That battery looks more like 2000mAh, or less :)
I bought some micro quad copter batteries for build. 350mah the unit is around 85ma
Super Nintendo actually had a Alladin game. was a decent platformer, felt similar to the super-starwars games.
Yeah that'd the one I referenced it was way different than the Genesis one.
My orange cat Skittles has become my best friend just turned a year old February 1st there's something about a cat that you connect with a way similar to a dog but it's a different thing but just as close as the dogs I've had maybe closer idk this cat knows exactly what I'm saying he has to their so much more aware then I gave them credit for they're not just cold blooded killers that care about nothing like I thought they were looking in their eyes I see now so much going on in there very special it's probably why they rule right beside us on the planet Earth with dogs they just sleep a little bit more 😂
Don't tell Bud but I wanted a dog. But a cat fit my lifestyle better (since I live alone and take a lot of 3 day trips)
Benjamin heckendore...
9:00 hot snot instead of silicone? i thought you weren't supposed to use hot glue with lipos. if ben heck is doing it then it must be a good idea though lol
Um.... sure it is.
I'm going to pronounce pico that way from now on. That's a neat case too. And HOA's should definitely be banned.
I feel like buying some pcbway for some reason...
love when im early and its only 360p
Solution to the pre-tinned pads... Give everyone a bare razor blade and just have them cut off the solder bumps on all the button's pads.
Unless the people, in your experience, are really clumsy and borderline idiots, who might end up either A) cutting themselves or B) somehow cutting a trace... _(they shouldn't be able to at the angle the blade would be at)_
Or, I guess you could give them a small strip of desoldering braid/wick, and let them do it themselves. I suppose the expense might be the same in the end, between enough of that or razor blades... 🤷♂️
Then again 🤔 maybe giving them the desoldering braid might just be a good idea, _anyways??_
Too bad we can't just be lazy and order a kit directly! I love project ideas like this, but I'm far too unmotivated to actually source everything AND buy a 3D printer... :)
You can often get the print files and even they can be sent to places like PCBWAY to be printed. No need to buy a printer.
They sponsor non-engineering channels too. I'm happy for you as I'm a big fan but the service can stuff it. The ccp has a massive propaganda fund which subsidizes them. American board houses are much cheaper I find.
That would be a huge pain to teach smd to beginners and I don't blame ya haha.
When the ccp start trimming fat soon it's gonna tank the 15 to 30k subs living the dream. They pay millions to people to drum up over-priced advertising yet have no social programs for their elderly. Cracks me up.
Pcbway have quadrupled their prices the past year. The other places stay the same.
Not trolling Ben. You know I'm a fan.
do i say first?
For the love of good Ben, not those silver-head screws for holding the front screen! To hell with the price switch to Hex Socket Head Cap Screws.
What can I say, they came with the screen :)
You should get yourself a finer solder tip for doing electronics. Im always amazed by your somewhat clunky junky tools. Love your work but do yourself a favor and get some better tools.
I like a chunky tip. It applies more heat faster. All that really matters is the edge touching the piece.
Its pronounced Pee-koh not pie-koh
Don’t bother trying to change him - it won’t work. By the end of the workshop last year, he had me saying pie-koh too! Fortunately I reverted back into proper English when I got home 😆
it's a long-standing meme.
All the fumes you're inhaling can't be good for your health, Ben 😕
Google about this - there have been studies. Ben should be OK. I still use an extractor when I am doing a LOT of soldering, though.
When you start getting headaches you know it's time to reduce your lead exposure. Lol
Please clean your soldering mat.
Hey. That IS clean! :)
No shoulder buttons "What a piece of junk!"
Why do Content creators keep baking in ads? Tired of skipping through them. Sorry Ben!
Because they give him free sh*t
Because they made the boards for the project. It's super expensive. Get the Sponsorblock browser addon if you don't want to skip manually.
PCBway providing the boards for free, prestuffed actually helps quite a lot. Folks may not be aware, but Ben reduced the price of the workshop this year because of that - and that’s after adding in additional parts (sdcard slot + more printed case parts). Plus we were really pressed for time at last years workshop because of all the surface mount soldering, so having those passives prestuffed is going to ensure that everyone walks away with a completed device.
@@HaakonAnderson Yup. They gave me $400 of boards for free, I give them plugs. Capitalism baby!
@@BenHeckHacks Stack that silicon!
