- Includes me making dumb mistakes, lots of random singing, Bud the Cat, Retro-Briting, impressions of UA-camrs, Leonard Nimoy and of course Sean Connery, soldering and then the greatest game ever made FRACTION MUNCHERS!
Enjoy! - Наука та технологія
move along folks, nothing IIc here
First with a dad joke. Lool
Well, there is something IIc. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be here ][ watch it.
I think I'll have to ][c for my self thank you
11:50 "You were once an abandoned kitten"
"Meow"
Always fun when drunk Ben records the video & sober Ben edits the video.
Mr Ben. Your talent is not the ability to repair and diagnose tech but the ability to speak non stop for for 1 hour straight. Kudos brother.
Haha you do realize I shot this over the course of a month right? :)
Lol your impressions and the Mavis Beacon bit made me laugh so hard.
Love your cat too and his meows. 🙂
Your post-production commitment to the Mavis Beacon bit made me spit up my beer. I recall LGR made a video where he revealed that Mavis Beacon wasn't a real person and they just chose a random image of a model because learning from a "person" was more compelling than learning from a machine, like Chessmaster. Still, if you're going to create a persona, how about choosing a name that doesn't sound like a physicists' lab tool?
I love how channels like these are part of this ecosystem, wherein you can say "I don't have to go Techmoan on this belt" and viewers will get the reference.
You know the ghost of Meavis Beacon was real because there is 0 production value
Dude, thank the gods you put out a video. I was watching UK politics eat itself and then the "has been" 😉 saviour of youtube comes and saves the day. Yay
Gods, us Brits need some major distraction at the moment, that's true
@@MrBoyuki move to Scotland if you can. vote Yes next year in the referendum. the UK might still be shit, but it can at least be smaller and harm fewer people
Not an atheist per se, more of a scientific agnostic. So while I won't say I'm praying for you, I feel empathy for you. Hang in there
@@RoamingAdhocrat I thought Scotland was the containment ground?
The Apple II spacebars are ABS because if they were PBT like the other keycaps the mold would need to be cooled to prevent warping. That would have meant higher tool cost and slower production.
Nice to meet you at the Pinball show Ben. Glad you mentioned your Apple IIc project to me. Happy to steer you in the right direction about the other Apple IIc and the vendor still had it! It was gone 15 minutes later, glad you got it!! (and thanks for the selfie)
Yeah thanks for the head's up! Gonna try and Retro-Brite that one before Old Man Winter hits! Case is kinda greasy, pre-brite cleaning will take longer.
The ghost of Mavis Beacon. Pure gold. Nice
It’s always a great video when bud appears, also does anyone else think desoldering guns sound like cows mooing in a field off in the distance.
Hot, vacuum powered cows with a penchant for liquid heavy metals maybe.
This was causing me physical discomfort, watching you torture that poor Apple 8-bit...but you dropped some deep KLF/JAMMs on us and all is forgiven.
56:15 Yes, Megatron was voiced by Frank Welker, Starscream threw Megatron out of Asrotrain ("Oh how it pains me to do this."), Megatron is transformed by Unicron (voiced by Orson Wells) into Galvatron (voiced by Leonard Nimoy). Frank Welker later reprised the voice of Galvatron in G1 Seasons 3 and 4 ("You dare interrupt my plasma bath?").
EDIT: Great movie, I have it on Laserdisc.
Isn't top part of power brick shield removable? Because it looks like it's certainly is, and you can easily screw regulator holders with top open.
That’s what I was screaming at my TV the whole time. The top comes off.
@@machzel08 That was seriously frustrating!
A drinking game idea for Ben Heck videos: Take a drink every time Ben references another UA-cam channel or sings. 😉🍷🍺
i like videos like this so much. they help me understand computer engineering and electronics so much better each time you explore a device.
I’m only at the part where Ben is trying to get inside the psu unit just because he wants to look inside…that editor note is a mood cuz I’ve broken stuff in the past just because I was curious about what was inside…lessons have been painfully learned
lol. it was a great restoration. so much struggle. happy to see you on here though, always fun to watch your stuff
I really feel like Ben is playing a game of UA-cam Retro and Repair Bingo in this episode. Great content as always.
I love the Indiana Jones and Henry Jones dialog. Hilarious.
Pretty interesting teardown (i can never agree with "but they used to make quality stuff when Steve Jobs ran the company!" with a straight face again..) but as usual your random banter and quotes and songs etc really take it to the next level hahaha, thanks for another great video!
A thoroughly enjoyable video Ben and in particular, Bud's pop-up appearance !
I dunno, I must be mellowing in my old age, as I found the singing ever-so slightly less offensive this time....
And yep, I too was amongst that sea of maniacal screen-shouters all screaming: "INSULATE THAT TRANSISTOR"!!
Ben Heck singing KLF was what I really needed today.
I come for the impressions, and stay for the antics.
I'm 14 seconds in and wondering how many 8-Bit Guy jokes will be made. Let's continue to find out.
Wow! A fixed computer and comedy! Thanks for sharing!
Lots of old electronics used mica insulators to electrically insulate transistors from ground, while transferring heat to the case/heatsink.
I was going to say exactly this. A lot of monitors (especially vector) use transistors with mica insulators to electrically isolate them from the chassis.
I grew up playing Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, and Dig Dug on this Computer. My dad, after my parents divorced, picked up a used IIGS, to replace the IIC he left behind for us. And our computer before these, was a Texas Instruments TI-99/4, but I was 5 or 6 when we sold that to a friend. Nice Restoration! That boot sound sequence brings back memories.
I love how blows up the transistors... and then... goes and tries to do it a second time!
I love all the UA-cam creators references. And I'm concern I recognize all of them. I need to get out of UA-cam a little
You had me cracking up on Mavis Becon, but Mario Teaches Typing 4 Life.
Louis Rossman Real Estate channel had me in stitches 😂
how much i love these videos.
“5 year old kid can pull out an X-Acto knife and destroy the speaker” hahaha ty!
Oh no. Ben is now making videos of cleaning stuff. His path to the dark side of tech UA-cam has truly begun.
And it's all because I hate sand...
Got PRODOS disk in the mail the Unidisk 3.5" functions as well. "Nice" I'll probably bring this stuff to VCF next year, maybe not free but "a great price to a good home"
Wow! What an awesome looking computer: Apple //c! 👍👍👍👍
Gonna be honest, I know absolutely nothing about engineering but I still really like your videos. Also, those alps switches are pretty valuable now. I hope I can get an alps keyboard in my collection someday, super cool stuff. I am sadly too young to have had any around in my lifetime it seems (or they were around before i got into keyboards).
I really like the hand designed pcb's so much more creativity. Good that there are plugins for bezier paths so I can relive this ..
3:13 Missed opportunity: "What the heck?" -> "What the me?"
Orson Welles + Leonard Nimoy = Yoda on acid.
was waiting for the paperclip in the power supply moment
Adventures in sil pads! ⚡ Can't wait IIc it. 😁
I saw Stan Bush in concert once. Ben’s impressions are one part awesome and one part insanity. Just right.
Welp... this was an awesome video, as usual.
Good work Ben and Bud
"Belts still good..don't have to go all tech moan on it" haha yep Tech moan is the king of cassette belt changes on youtube. Honestly i love the tech, but come for the witty banter lol
I had the exact same one back in 1985, with a color monitor and a Apple Imagewriter II printer which my parents bought me at Macy's. That Apple //c had very fast 1mhz CPU 😁🤣 I used to love playing this very weird adventure game on it, Tass Times in Tonetown, I loved it.
Friend had that computer, so cool thanks for sharing!
This is the perfect Ben Hack video. :)
Definitely fell in love with this computer after watching Joe Dante's Explorers, didn't realize what make/model it was until years later.
Bwhoa, seeing Fraction Munchers at the end gave me flashbacks to Number Munchers on my mom's old Win 3.1 PC from when I was a kid! As for the Apple II, I always loved playing Family Feud and Jazz Jackrabbit on summer camp's Apple IIe computer lab that one year, Oregon Trail less so.
20:42 There was an awesome TV series in the late 70's called Salvage 1 where they built a rocket at a scrap yard. I loved it! Especially since I now own and operate an e-scrap yard lol!
Alright! Another great cat video on the internet! Wait. It comes with a movie too. I shouted at the screen, "No Ben, NO! Don't use the silver like that!" What a thriller!
If the Ghost of Mavis Beacon is not a permanent addition to the channel then you’re doing it wrong :)
Wouldn't I have to be making a video specifically involving typing for said ghost to make an appearance?
If my channel ever grows, I'll know I've "made it" when Ben does an impromptu impression of me.
Why do you keep letting those parts contact the shielding through the paste? I'm confused, there wasn't any vinyl tabs between the components and the shield? edit: Nevermind you figured it out, I was yelling at the tv lol, I have never seen a transistor or regulator in any amplifier or power supply that wasn't isolated from the chassis with a piece of vinyl.
That's a great New Years resolution to be honest
I guess you were lucky enough to not let out the *magic smoke*
All we should know about Apple: their products were wierd even back then.
The "look, look, apple bad!!!" gets a bit boring but then again, ben is a troll and I just fed him - damn you! And see you again tomorrow!
The Indiana/Henry Jones bit. I legit forgot I was listening to one guy for a moment.
49:29 Sulu mentions that the ship will interface with Federation memory banks before they leave Vulcan, and become aware of the probe. It's in the scene where Chekov says wessel for the first time.
KIRK: Systems report. Communications?
UHURA: Communications systems all ready, sir. Communications officer is as ready as she'll ever be.
KIRK: Mister Sulu?
SULU: Guidance is functional. Onboard computer will interface with Federation memory bank.
KIRK: Weapons systems?
CHEKOV: Operational, Admiral. Cloaking device now available on all flight modes.
KIRK: I'm impressed, A lot of effort for a short voyage.
CHEKOV: We are in an enemy wessel, sir. I didn't wish to be shot down on the way to our own funeral.
KIRK: Most prudent. ...Engine room. Report, Mister Scott.
Sure but how they did interface with Federation memory banks when Earth was being attacked by a magnetic field or whatever?
Eh! Still better than anything JJ or Kurtzman shat out.
I guessed the mistake! I've replaced the negative regulator in a Tandy 1000SX power supply--It has a similar arrangement where it's insulated from the heatsink by a mica sheet. That one was more conspicuous though, as all the regulators are in the same place on the board, and only that one has a mica sheet. Still a surprise to see the "ground tab" not being ground!
It was Andy Griffith in Salvage that built a rocket out of a junkyard.
You're definitely gonna need to retro-brite that thing before you'll be able to play 🤖 Petschi Robots on it
shielding of cable is supposed to go under the strain relief to connect it to ground.
nice touch with the 'mavis beacon' character!
The screws touching the second metal shield?
It's a cool video, with all that experience, all the old chips together could turn into a Ben Heck mega core with 8192 bits aligned on a board with all the old ddr ram kit in parallel.
Didn't expect a rendition of The KLF : Justified & Ancient
Yeah, the power port on mine had the same crustiness. It also came with the same crappy keyboard as yours. I considered buying a semi-broken one with the nicer keys, but one of the keys was broken and it was missing some of the key caps. And besides, it's not like I'm going to use it to write a novel or something.
I had a lot of trouble finding a decent quality DIN connector for my replacement power supply. Those ones are really crappy and the housing pulls off when you try to pull the connector out of the socket. I did manage to find a 180° DIN-5 with a metal housing, so my plan is to just drill out the extra positions, since they're not used anyway.
Well, after an hour of watching your video, the only thing I really got done on my replacement IIc power brick was making a bracket to hold the 12V power module inside the enclosure. I should've just bought an off the shelf power brick, wired it into the plug and called it done. _But nooo,_ I wanted to get fancy and make my own artesianal hand-made power brick. Stupid.
If I remember right, old school power transistors used a thin mylar (Or was it Mica) insulator sheet to stop the heavy can from shorting them to the chassis while still allowing for thermal transfer.
I believe the top of the power brick comes off. You can see all the tabs, that's how you are supposed to take them apart.
heck yeah!! I own one of these myself and I have yet to retro bright it. I love seeing videos about the model I own :)
Quite the restoration journey!
The transistor you had a problem with. You would have not had if you rebuilt enough crt monitors. I learned as you did with the same steps that the insulation is important.
that ghost of the typing chick legit scared me at first lol

Ben: "Oh, Ohh!"
Feeling the frustration!😂
Thanks for the KLF callback!
Regulators mount up. 😂
Isn't that "encoder" thingy to test te speed with a strobe?
Connecting only one side of the shielding is standard practice to prevent a voltage drop across the shielding, last I remember hearing.
My family had one of these when I was young. Fond memories of changing the programing of Lemonade Stand to give me more money
I googled a space ship made of garbage that flew into space. It came up with Space X. Then I googled again with TV and it came up with Salvage 1. I remember watching that as a kid back in the 70s. I need to watch it again. Is there anything you can't do Ben 🚀
MECC WAS my childhood! It was a great time.
We had a IIc+ growing up. It was like a turbo charged IIc. It was hard to find Apple II software for its 3.5” drive.
Lots of voltage regulators and power supplies *NEED* mica insulating wafers to keep the transistor collectors, from grounding out on the case...
Many Audio amplifiers also used mica wafers to isolate the transistors from the case! I remember getting a very nasty shock from a tek scope with open hot collector TO-3 transistors at over 500 volts!
I still remember the code to break almost every program and get a command prompt. Right where you wanted it.
Hold Control. Type Catalog. Enter
Have no idea why but the person who taught me. Their dad was a genius in computers and technology.
It's the Ctrl-C.
The never ending story ... Good movie .. Good video herefrom Racine Wisconsin
Pretty good actor you are ..
I believe the //gs was the one that completed a ground circuit with shielding. For all of it's flaws and oddities, Im a big fan of the //gs (largely to do with it's use of the 65816) and one day would like to own one.
I really like how you quit your job at Element ??#. You said you were going to start a movie-career. You didn't say anything about cat-movies for UA-cam from your home. :-) Thank you, I really enjoy watching you tearing down this Apple IIc - (I was learning Pascal and studying English on one of those in 1986 as a high-school student...)
The movie “Batteries not included” features a robot made from junk.
“Don’t have to go all Techmoan on it”….Great reference…lol
I love it when a youtuber I watch references another youtuber I watch.
That Mavis ghost was truly unnerving
techmoan, the best belt guy in the business
omg im in tears, and iv got over 30min to go....
Mavis Beacon appeared just as the prophecy said!
Miss Cleo foretold this event
