- Sewing machines are a great tool for creating beautiful projects, but if they're not properly maintained, they can become frustrating to use. To keep your Singer Simple Sewing Machine in tip-top shape, it's important to clean and tension it regularly. Start by unplugging the machine and removing the needle and presser foot. Use a small brush to gently clean out any lint or dust that accumulated inside the bobbin case and around the feed dogs. Then, rethread the machine and adjust the tension to ensure your stitches are even and balanced.
Now that my machine is ready to go, it's time to start on my patchwork quilt! Using scrap fabrics is a great way to create a unique and meaningful gift. I chose to use the simple square shapes of 4by4 and 8by8 depending on the fabric scrap size. To start, Iron and cut the squares. Then lay out my fabric pieces in a pleasing arrangement and begin sewing them together in rows. Once my rows are complete, sew them together to create the main quilt top. Next, layer the quilt top with batting and a backing made from an old sheet. Pin the layers together and carefully sew around the edges. Finally, add any finishing touches like binding or decorative stitching to complete my one-of-a-kind gift for my mom. Her new beach blanket!

what a good video, thank you so much,, when i started out making quilts i use a very simple brother machine and i loved her so much but then she passed on so i got a janome and i really love her to, a really sweet lady donated her sewing machine to me and it was a brother (oh my heart is happy) anyway i learned early to get a presser foot with a guide but you can also mark a line with painters tape using a index card, the spacing is exactly 1/4"
Lovely and totally the true origin of quilting, using scraps of this and that.
Thank you!
My new beach blanket is the bees knees. I have to say for now I am using it in winter. this is the time I actually get to look and the fabric choices and remember where the material came from. Just yesterday I noticed a mermaid pattern, just right for a beach blanket! thanks Asht!
This is AMAZING. I have been wanting to make a quilt for so long but am too intimidated. I am going to just follow your instructions and do what you did. Thank you for this video ❤
You are welcome!!! And you can do it!!
Your quilt turned out super beautiful! 💕
Thank you! 😊
Ashton you have done a really good job. One suggestion I have for you is to buy a box or 2 of large Safety Pins and use those to hold your quilt sandwitch together instead of straight pins so you won't be sticking yourself.
I will def be doing this next time! Thanks.
I'm amazed that little Singer will sew through all those layers. My old Singer won't do it. Good Job, lovely quilt!
Beautiful quilt❤
Thank you! 😊
It’s so cute! I love scrappy quilts. I make a lot of them. Look for a walking foot. Makes travelling through all those layers a dream. I hope you will make more quilts.
Nice quilt! I love how you knew where the fabrics pieces came from. Stories add so much to a quilt. Excellent video illustrating that you don't need the newest or most expensive machine or designer fabrics to make a beautiful quilt. If you make more, a good investment would be a package of safety pins to hold the layers together & save your fingers from pin pricks.
Thank you!
My top tip is clean out the fluff every bobbin change, oil it up weekly if a heavy user of a machine. I do lots of funky things and weird fabrics tend to shed more lint that fresh cuts. Happy quilting from Geraldton Western Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Thanks for sharing!
I enjoy this, but do you sell this or is for home use
@seunoyewo1599 I gifted this exact quilt to my mother. I don't know that I have the patience for the detail needed to create one for sale. As for the pattern, I made that up as I went haha.
It came out so good!
It looks great! I love the combination of the alternating large squares and small squares blocks.
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice. Keep up the good work.
It’s 48 and have never owned a full size ironing board. I use a towel too 😂
Never tried a vacuum cleaner, i use both the provided machine lint brush, plus a super cool make up brush that has magnetic end to the handle. Great for picking up dropped pins AND for not losing the screws to your throat plate during maintenance work. For spare parts, check the website for your machine brand. Even older machines can get model specific replacement parts.
Good job
+you did a wonderful job.
Thank you!
You've got a rotary cutter, why not get a square or rectangular quilter's ruler, 6 1/2" by 12 /2" is a great size. You can measure width as well as length accurately. It's hard to sew crooked fabric straight. Have you got any spare bobbins, they're handy for larger projects too. Check charity shops, 100% cotton is best kept together, if your sheets have polyester, keep that together too. Put one or the other in your quilt. Mixing causes odd wear patterns and holes. That was not a border, but a self binding. A border is a flat section added on all around to make the top part bigger or more beautiful. Once you learn the basic whys, you can do whatever works for you. No quilt police. Have you heard of string piecing, leaders and enders, or web piecing, making the process a bit quicker? There are plenty of beginner friendly yt's to learn from. Try Tiffany's Quilting Life? She's not addicted to pinning either. She fixes things too. You did good, done and warm is better.
Thanks for ALL the tips. I used to have one of those rulers... not sure where it got to! I love all these best practice ideas 💡 maybe if I make another I will try some. My basic sewing and quilting skills gotther done this time! Fake it till you make it. Hahah.
I stopped making quilts because the backing became expensive I make duvet covers instead I never thought of using blankets
Having a hard time hearing you with the music in background 😢
Will be working harder on sound quality in the future! Thanks for your feedback.
You call your thread string?
