  • Camera gear reviewers always talk about the new trend like it's something that might make or break your way into high end cinematography, but it's a lot more complex than that, in the last year i've seen a great deal of videos talking about the pocket og, i want to share some of my insights as well in this brief video talking quite frankly about its merits and its many caveats.

    Fantastic vid man! Love the looks you achieve, and you managed to intercut your footage with Blade Runner very smoothly. 😲
    I shoot on 2 cameras: the BMPCC OG and a Krasnogorsk-3 Ultra16mm film camera. It’s been fun intercutting their footage. I use a cheap MFT to M42 speedbooster on the OG, and since the K3 has a M42 mount I’ve been using the same Pentax Takumar vintage lenses on both cameras.

    • @thoratius4363
      @thoratius4363  Рік тому +2

      Ohhh so you're one of the bold ones who's taken the next step and actually shoots film! the Krasnogorsk-3 is fairly affordable from what i've heard but the cost of developing and scanning the 16mm film is still too prohibitive for me, unfortunately here in Italy I haven't found any lab that develops and scans motion picture film at a reasonable price :/ ... I'm curious though of the result you've achieved intercutting the two cameras, do you have by chance any available footage?

      @@Miguel.Garcia I’ve been trying to share links in my replies here, but UA-cam/some sinister force is deleting them for some reason… maybe because I’m sharing Vimeo links? Not sure…
      I haven’t tried hard to make the BMPCCOG footage indistinguishable from the K3 footage yet, both because I’m not a colorist (still learning) and because I haven’t yet had a reason to. However, given that the BMPCCOG can shoot in that raw format, and the scans I get back from shooting on my K3 are 6K and can be manipulated in all sorts of ways, I think it can be done.

    You can use lenses with stabilization.

    • @thoratius4363
      @thoratius4363  Рік тому +4

      Yes you could use them but you should find MFT lenses in the range of 10-25mm because the bmpcc og has an almost x3 crop factor and the lens image stabilization is somewhat useless with narrower field of views, IS is also meant for photography stationary shooting, to aid capturing shots in low light conditions when a longer exposition would be required and a tremulous hand might ruin the shot, it won't really help you that much when shooting in motion, but a combination of IS + stabilization in post is still better than no stabilization.

      Hey! So i'm using Davinci to color grade and the first step is a simple Color space transform to blackmagic gen4 + 500T fuji 3513 film stock emulation through dehancer, i usually grade with that because it's faster and often yields a great retro result, you can even try to recreate it through powergrades but first you must study pretty well the light response of the film stock you want to recreate, davinci resolve studio offers a great deal of instruments that will allow you to do that, not simple but totally achievable, if you don't have 300$ to spend on dehancer you could check Juan Melara's blog, he's an expert in recreating old film stocks!

    • @thoratius4363
      @thoratius4363  Рік тому +2

      I think they'll certainly contribute to an older aesthetic, modern lenses tend to be of higher glass quality than those produced in the 70s and 80s, I often prefer the older ones when shooting people, the skin would often look softer and nicer, with less visible imperfections. Also some of these older lenses have weird or interesting bokeh such as the famous helios 44-2. So i highly encourage you to experiment with old lenses (might end up being even cheaper!)

      @@comoquiseresman Of course! I usually go for Ebay, but in Italy we also have Subito.it, if i remember correctly i found this one there, must have been around 80€, but I wouldn't go searching for "canon v6x16", i'd search for a generic "vintage broadcast lens", check the photos and description and see if you get close to one of these (people often mislabel them and even if you don't find a canon one, there are also good fujinon tv lenses worth checking out ). @thoratius4363  Рік тому

      @@Jesaaelysthat's unfortunate, there are some adapters that have an iris built in but they are typically MFT to EF, i don't think you'll find a C to MFT mount that has it, the best option would be to send it back and search for another one on ebay as they are quite common and not really that expensive. You could otherwise send it to a lens repair center or if you feel corageous enough you could unscrew the back of the lens and the rear glass element and check if the blades are stuck or if the mechanism is still intact, sometimes old iris blades grind together and get deformed or there's too much oil in the mechanism, you could disassemble it and clean up the blades, I don't know if there are any available videos on yt explaining the process for this lens in particular, but once you learn how to disassemble any diaphragm the procedure is pretty much the same for all.
