Like when I film myself talking to UA-cam, I don’t use auto focus. If I move forward or back, I fall out of focus slightly. I notice anyone on YT using AF, which is totally fine. @@BlaineWestropp1 yeah. A lot of the most unique sensors have been hard to grade from my experience. As you know, I have the Scarlet-W and that guy has taken some work to get to a deliverable grade. But, that’s better than just slapping a LUT on some FX3 footage imo.

Hi, I got this setup with 14-42 pancake lense, but it's now stuck on it's most narrow and camera does not react to the lense. I seen some old reddit threads on it but no real resolution. Do you know what's causing this and how to fix it?
Hey sorry for the delay. I think I’ve heard of this happening but cannot remember. I would first attempt to clean the contacts by just rubbing them with your finger. Other than that I am not positive :(
In 2013 I bought the original BMPCC on sale for $499. The current sale felt like deja vu so I bought the BMCC6K. It brought a tear to my eye to see that the caveats from days of yore (no ibis, crappy low light and battery life) are still there today. Feels so familiar. Now I can free my OG Pocket from it's cage and adapter so I can use it as a pocket camera. Trying to figure out what Lumix lens to get since that 14-42 you're using has a long history of issues. Thanks for this video, I think simplicity and constraints are good and look forward to my pocket finally...ending up in my pocket.
this is great. glad you got the 6k. the FF right? I really dont mind the caveats.. the Alexa (my favorite camera ever) has all those same things. no ibis, fast battery drain, and no significant low light performance are all part of all the best cameras ever made in my opinion. sure it is cool to have an fx3 that can see in the dark and the battery lasts all day, but I am used to an Alexa that runs for 45 minutes and having 12 gold mount batteries that need to be moved around. I could fit 12 bmpcc batts in my other pocket! it does go back to the simplicity.. I even like when batteries dont last for a long time, sometimes. makes you more intentional. like film. so having all of those things are fine with me, and having all of them in a camera I can carry around all day is super cool. glad you got the bmpcc back in your pocket!
@@BlaineWestropp1 Yes, the FF. I look forward to not doing crop conversion since I use Contax glass. And like you, I'm not averse to carrying batteries. I'd prefer not having to rig this up with a V-mount or whatever. I think of it like when I was shooting Super 8, you shoot very intentionally. I like that the FF has that nice big monitor. I shoot Sony for stills and have tried for video but there's something special about BM files and I love BM menus.
I had one with the Viewfactor cage. Looked the bomb. Menu was a dream. BUT… external battery is essential and the ports are super-delicate. By the time you’ve finished rigging it, it was like a premature baby on life support.
It was the Viewfactor cage. Milled from one block of aluminium. Unsurprisingly they went under once their machine died. If you want a VF, the one I used is by Swivi. Very compatible with this model and the cage.
Walking around, seeing something cool and missing the moment is a great motivator to learn how to use your camera faster (at least for me it is). If it takes too long to adjust, it's tough to want to go shoot for fun with that camera. Not every camera needs to pass that test, but they are cooler when the do
100%. it stings when you miss the shot, but makes ya better. I support walking around and practicing. it's kinda hard to just walk around and make random shots feel like something.. so when you are able to do that.. it helps in other areas.
I used it for a few shots in the intro of the Wyatt Cenac Netflix special "Brooklyn" back in 2014. Shot in McCarren Park. Netflix didn't say anything. This may have been before the hoopla about cameras being Netflix certified. 🤷♂
Great advice here: Learn to not rely on all the features. Need better lowlight performance? Learn to light your scene. I have an FX30 and people and quick to say “crappy lowlight”, but if you know how to light a scene properly, the fx30 is a great camera. Keep inspiring man 🤜🏻🤛🏻
100% agree. also, just bc a camera has AF and dual iso.. doesn't mean you can't use it in a traditional manner. fx30 and fx3 are amazing cameras and some of my top recommendations. I also need to buy an fx30.
Love your content! I've bought and sold the og so many times. I keep coming back to it! In theory they could use the sensor from the G2 micro in a new pocket. Wishful thinking perhaps. Keep up the solid work!
Love that camera, I shot my first feature ( a micro budget crime film in 2019) on the OG. Since I had to move locations, setup real quickly, and was looking for something with decent quality the OG worked out perfectly. I screened it in a few theaters and now its on TUBI ( film is called Dirt City) and aside from it being extremely low budget, i believe it looked pretty good on the big screen. I bought the cam from an old skater friend who didn't have any use for it.
This is awesome! I’m going to have to check out the film. It’s a great camera. It’s very wise to pick the right tool, in your case, something you needed to move around easily with. I shot a pilot episode last summer and I was really torn on what camera to use and I ended up using the fx3 (for ease of moving around) and a 24-70 zoom. Day 1 I was thanking myself for keeping it simple.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I haven’t touched the Fx3 yet but definitely want to try it out. I agree with you on using what’s best for the project. What was the pilot Episode about ?
Hey Blaine, I have the bmpcc og, wanted an actual pocketable lens and landed on the 14-42 you are using as well, I have read a lot about the lens bricking and now being able to focus/retract on the bmpcc og, do you happen to know which firmware your lens and camera are on so I can maybe dodge that bullet? Would be much appreciated.
@@BlaineWestropp1 reporting back, lens got here, i updated the bmpcc og to the latest firmware first, restarted it, connected the lens and it is working like a charm, stabilization is surprisingly good and only active then recording, sparing my battery 🙏
Excellent as always. I think you might be looking for the cine equivalent of a leica rangefinder m series, m3-6. I guess a digital braun nizo would make some sense and i have never really understood why that form factor disappeared bar for camcorders. I think the sony handycam mini dv was probably the game changer with the flip out screen. If we are interested in capturing what we see around us then it never made sense to me to have any camera that you didn’t put up to your eye to shoot. That said i used to love how reportage photographers would extend their arm and point the camera in the general direction of the action knowing the lens and focus were taken care of. For play back having a screen is nice for sure but for shooting?? I think that is where bm got confused or at least made a counter intuitive decision though it did tie in the moment of shooting with the moment of viewing as its usp. Clever from a wysiwyg dopamine pov. Maybe its the kind of decision that is made by someone who has never been a photographer and hasnt experienced the delay inherent in seeing film rushes back. I think point and shoot has always made sense and coming from using film cameras and their simplicity especially when thinking about a bolex it is easy to see how bruce webber shot lets get lost on one and got nominated for an Oscar. Btw i am surprised you are not shooting in monochrome b and w. Im sure you already have. Mank? Fellini? Woody Allen’s Manhattan? Slipping my Komodo to the achromic lut is like breathing out after holding my breath. Everything is so easy in terms of shooting and reducing the decision making down to the subject and the frame. I remember having a leica r series and for some reason shot widescreen on it always on b and w film. I think i was experimenting with panoramic set ups at the time. Just amazing. My memory is so fuzzy but i remember the contact sheets having a super wide neg frame. Always been a fan of 239. I put anamorphics on dvcams and i look at all my old footage that is framed so perfectly (?) because the cameras were so low tech and lens orientated being film or early digital that i really wish they could have some more fidelity. Upres software just doesnt work on it. Still they capture a time and place i guess. Sorry i am drifting. Thx for the post. An absolute pleasure as always.
thanks Ken! I do very much cherish a viewfinder. I like how you can put a viewfinder on the newer Blackmagic cams. very nice to frame things, and kind of block out everything else. that is the way. also, when you mention monochrome, do you mean just view the monitor in B&W or shoot stuff in B&W. I shot a lot of B&W film, but don't do that much anymore. maybe I need to step back into it for a moment!
@@BlaineWestropp1 hey thx for that. I mean shoot in monochrome. Although you seem like someone who appreciates muted tones i guess it make total sense that you have been there and got the black and white t-shirt and mug. I guess everyone has a black and white masterpiece in them.
I have an OG pocket but I can never seem to get colours like this. Did you use a power grade or lut for this? Looks great. I would be keen to know the post workflow. Thanks a million
Trust me, when years pass, this camera will rise in value, it will be sought after, because it was a total one off, a cinematic beast in a small package that has its own look. Don’t ever sell it if you have one.
I bought my BMPCC because of this video 🔥 i want to ask you about that 14-42 OIS. Is it good for this camera because of the OIS which the camera dont have ? Also which one is the tiny ND variable filter ? Thanks
hey sorry for the delay. the 14-42 is cool. it is kind of annoying to focus and zoom, as both are on an electronic motor. but it is tiny. the OIS does work, but you can't turn it off. I would look into a lens where you could turn it off. all I know about the ND is that it says URTH 37 BL ND2-400!
Okay yeah that makes more sense because I was like holy shit haha Still love my BMMCC dearly, although I must admit you have me considering the new BMCC6k FF 😂
Really depends how you want to use the camera. Sometimes OIS is great, sometimes it is not. But if you have a lens you can turn it off and on, then that’s good.
Hi Blaine! I really hope you have time to answer all my questions about cameras. :) I came across your video because I’m looking for a lightweight camera for a documentary project. Just to give you an idea: I have to follow a character who, as a biologist, climbs steep slopes, scales the walls of abandoned buildings, and cycles for miles-all in one day. I realized that getting a cinema camera would be a big mistake for me. I really prefer Blackmagic cameras over other brands, but I’m unsure about a couple of things: the battery life (how many LP-E6 batteries would I need to carry for a full day of filming?) and the stabilization, since I’ll always need to shoot handheld. I really like your approach to filmmaking, so I was hoping you might help me make a decision! :)
Hey sorry for the delay. Do you know the elevation you will be climbing? Do you really need a very light camera? Or can you shoot it with a heavier setup and have a team? If it is a one day shoot, are you renting the equipment, or are you looking to buy? If you prefer Blackmagic, I would go with that. I like Blackmagic. I will also say the fx3/30 is very light, easy to move around with, battery life is nice, and auto focus. But.. do you really need auto focus? It all depends what you want to capture, and how you want to approach capturing it. If your task was to record without cutting the entire day and you need every moment in focus, maybe an fx3. Sometimes I approach shooting things as if I had only 1000 feet of film. Planned. Precise. Controlled. Find your approach and goals, the gear decisions will follow. Happy to help further! Also, I am unsure on the battery life question you asked. Gotta do some googling for that. I’m sure the run time is out there.
I just got into filmmaking a year ago and bought myself an OG and rigged it out. For my needs, it’s perfect… Hoping to get my hands on an eclipse from Alt Cine built out of the micro. Then I will be set 🌞
@@BlaineWestropp1 I think they are just finishing the final testing phase. I don’t know when they’re going to start production. By the way Alt Cine makes an olpf filter for the OG and micro i’m just waiting for mine to arrive. For me, I’m not interested in the 6K although the price is awesome atm. Making my own films I just love the simplicity of the OG and coming from a photography I’m wedded to the Fairchild sensor, you get amazing results uprezing to 4K in daVinci resolve.
fx30 is more crisp, and more what you'd expect from a modern camera today. the BM also only does 1080. now the newer BM cameras vs fx30.. that's a different story, but still depends heavily on your needs.
I bought one of these back in 2013. I sold it, I regret it but I hope the guy I sold it too used it well. I would love if BM remade this and kept it pocket and make it MFT so I can still use my current lenses 😊
This was my very first camera and it taught me so much ! And after more than 8 years, I've decided to film my first documentary with it ! I could have gone with way much better cameras, but budget cuts and the need to be discreet in some locations made me consider this option. Back to basics I guess... 😁
nightmare lol. it has a motorized focus rocker on the side of the lens. so no focus ring. but it works with the auto focus button on the camera. so to get focus, I will use that button, let it find focus, then roll.
May I know what is the tripod and the base on top of it that you are using at 1:45 ?? It looks heavy and there seems to be one more thing on top of it on which the camera is.
It’s an oconor 2575, with the plate and dovetail. There is a chance we just went dovetail only to the tripod without the additional plate. I can’t remember. It is very heavy. :)
I always trashed this camera back in the day. But you make a good argument for it. Though what you said made me think about tripods. They're very simple though a lot can be said about a tilt or pan shot. I was on a jewellery shoot recently shooting in a Komodo with Cooke lenses and a ronin 2 and when we got into the edit I was like this could have been 90% on sticks and could have been more impactful. While I also think due to time pressure we never got the ronin balanced properly due to how front and bottom heavy the rig was so the tripod could have saved us time too.
tripod is definitely very useful. I like how I see less tripod stuff lately. it makes me use a tripod more. I have actually been doing some whip pan stuff and it looks nice.. and feels unique bc a lot of stuff we see is on a moving camera nowadays. love a dolly of course, but the tripod is simple, and impactful like you say.
@@BlaineWestropp1 love a good whip pan. A few crash zooms can also be sick especially now there are so many great parfocal lenses about! Tripods are certainly the one really helps keep you grounded and makes like simple and I absolutely love dollies, I am not crazy about gimbals just as they're so over used though they certainly have a place and I think if you keep life simple use simple techniques you'll end up having a more impactful moment I'd try and leave out complications for a specific shot rather than the whole thing Also the democracy of great filmmaking gear gets a lot of people trying these shots that unless your intentional with them won't actually add and will dilute what you're trying to say. Being more economical with the shots is a better way to be

I was planning to search for the BMPCC 4K; probably there could be a good reason to buy an OG AND the 4K. I don't know. The BMP's IMAGES, I mean, the images you showed here, just pure CINEMA. Q: The FULL FRAME BLACK MAGIC WHAT?? DO you mean the 6K?
Man I just recently got a bmpcc 4k and the image is so awesome, I've heard the Original (and I think the first Micro Studio and the 2.5k) have the old sensor that people really like, comparing it to digital film, I feel like the bmpcc 4k is like that, I can only imagine how the original is. 😮 I want to get an original one day to be able to better match my a and b cameras (right now I have the 4k and a Lumix S5ii which is great but didn't match well for me 🤔)
the 4k is great. I think it has a look that is a little easier to work with. both are special in their own way! gotta spin those wheels in resolve to get a good match!
Mr. Westropp I have a Canon Gx7 Mark ii but I have a feeling there are other more appropriate cameras for a beginner in cinematography. Do you have any other recommendations other than the blackmagic? Thanks for all the info you give!
Hey! Anything that you can attach lenses to, and shoot log with. The newer Blackmagic full frame is a great option bc it has a large sensor, shoots log, and raw, and can basically mimic shooting on any other sensor size. You don’t need a camera that shoots raw, but log I would definitely reccomend, along with lens versatility. Sony fx3 and fx30 pretty nice too! Also people say good things about the sigma FP, but I haven’t used it.
Did you hold onto that Ikonoskop and those s16 lenses? Would be cool to see some footage and comparisons. Maybe you need to try the Digital Bolex next haha Great video 🤘🏻
Hey thanks! I definitely want to try the digital bolex. The imonoskop and s16 glass was rented, but could see myself potentially renting that package again!
Lumix announced s9, invited people to Japan to test it out, bunch of videos about the camera posted online (naturally). it sparked a debate about gear reviews, and the complexities of recommending equipment that has been given to you, or a significant trip or money related to camera review.
The Sigma FP is considered to be the spiritual successor to this camera to a lot of people. I love mine, you just really need to pair it with an OIS lens for handheld stuff due to how light the camera is.
In my opinion yes. Because it is similar in a way to how one would work on a large production. There are aspects you don’t have with this camera though, like 4k, internal ND, and auto focus. But.. I don’t think you need those things. It also depends what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot.

If you set up ''timelapse'' let's say to 1 sec (and adjust the shutter speed), you can use the of 'OG' to take pictures ;)
Amen brother. Beautifully said.
😎🫡
Fire camera man. Gives such a unique look; which is missing for a lot of cameras nowadays.
yep. at times it is a little tricky to grade, but it has a unique cool look. the newer BM cameras are much easier to grade in my opinion. but this og is something special!
@@BlaineWestropp1 yeah. A lot of the most unique sensors have been hard to grade from my experience. As you know, I have the Scarlet-W and that guy has taken some work to get to a deliverable grade. But, that’s better than just slapping a LUT on some FX3 footage imo.
That beast you of reunion you were holding had a Fairchild sensor that made it so good. I got the 4k instead of that but really wanted something as small as iPhone. Thanks for sharing.
4k is a good move. same user experience pretty much in terms of the menu which is great. iPhone is pretty good now too.. just can't really add other lenses like you can with a camera.
That LUMIX Drama. Love to see a smirk on your face 😂 that intro was all style in the best way with that quick shot/synth beat. Don’t know you but we are best friends.
haha thank you thank you :)
Screen on mine is broken too, so I can’t even be sure that what I’m shooting has worked. It removes the final crutch between this and shooting film
Does the screen work at all?! You gotta be able to at least see something!
@@BlaineWestropp1 oh yeah, I can see enough to frame and punch in for focus, but you should see it man, its almost like a solarised image, there’s no way to gauge colour, contrast or exposure. I just use 90% zebras and pray
Crisp and to the point. Love your videos
Thank you :) more to come!
I understand that maybe 1080p isn't up to snuff for some people; however, if Blackmagic would release this camera again with some minor updates and an OLPF I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to use a cinema camera.
100% agree with you
What camera should I buy?
😂😂 I hear imax has a new camera on the horizon.
Other than that I am not positive :(
Amazing depiction of the OG! Can you please tell us the ND filter you have attached to the camera!
Do you attach a UV filter on top of the nd filter?
I do not.
I had one with the Viewfactor cage. Looked the bomb. Menu was a dream. BUT… external battery is essential and the ports are super-delicate. By the time you’ve finished rigging it, it was like a premature baby on life support.
I don’t mind the battery situation. I may need to get the viewfinder. Who made it?
It was the Viewfactor cage. Milled from one block of aluminium. Unsurprisingly they went under once their machine died. If you want a VF, the one I used is by Swivi. Very compatible with this model and the cage.
@josephasghar cool thanks for the info!
Wow! I gotta see this. I go to mccarren park every day. Need to see the 2014 Blackmagic version of it!
Hey thank you! I would love a reboot of this camera!!
Best camera ever.
The goat
Fx3 is great. It’s about 3 friends who own a gym and are trying to keep the business running!
ENDING ON A BOMB OF KNOWLEDGE! LOVE IT!
😇😇🫡
I have one that just gave out on me recently wont turn on any help?
Hmm what happened to it? You could try to contact Blackmagic but I have no idea if they service them still.
@@BlaineWestropp1 yea i did they dont was hoping to find someone who can fix it
I’d look into camera repair shops. But even then, this may be a tough one. Where are you located?

There’s gotta be a place around here. Let me ask around.
Would love to see how you like the Panasonic Lumix S9. Pocket cinema camera with a similar pancake lens.
I as well would love to try that one out! I will try to make it happen
I completely agree with you Blaine 100%. It’s all about the image you design over the tools you use to record it. 🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥📷🎞️📷🎞️📷🎞️
Yes!!
I am not sure the firmware, I would potentially consider another lens though. This is just what came with the cam.
Hey thanks! I used F1 on all of this. I can show you some techniques if you want :)
Never used this one but thought about getting in back when it was released. Just got the full frame 6k recently so stoked to test it out
Full frame 6k is great. I definitely support that purchase. Image is beautiful and you can shoot FF all the way to s16 which is great.
@@BlaineWestropp1 didn’t know about the s16 part, that sounds cool too
Can't find one anywhere online.
Gotta go to eBay!
Trust me, when years pass, this camera will rise in value, it will be sought after, because it was a total one off, a cinematic beast in a small package that has its own look. Don’t ever sell it if you have one.
Totally agree. I love it!
Still own two - insanely good image. Also great to use during winter shoots - ran so warm no need for gloves.
haha the perfect hand warmers 😂 I also had 2 years ago. was great.
@@BlaineWestropp1 thank You
Was the shot at 3:32 shot on the OG?
If so, damn, and that just furthers my love of the OG/BMMCC
Ahhh that shot was shot on 35mm film! I should have noted that. Everything else was the BM cam.
Okay yeah that makes more sense because I was like holy shit haha
Still love my BMMCC dearly, although I must admit you have me considering the new BMCC6k FF 😂
Can you enable Lens stabilization from the menu?
I don’t think so. It has to be a switch on the lens. For example on the lens I had on in this video I cannot turn it off.
@@BlaineWestropp1 Stabilization is enabled
Great video
thank you!
Do you think is better looking for a OIS lens because of the lack of in stabilization and low weight of the camera ?
Really depends how you want to use the camera. Sometimes OIS is great, sometimes it is not. But if you have a lens you can turn it off and on, then that’s good.
And here all this time I thought that The Birds of the Wetlands was the footage from the shmuck who sold the one I bought 4 years ago.
Hahaha this made me lol for real. Now you know!
Appreciated!

I just got into filmmaking a year ago and bought myself an OG and rigged it out. For my needs, it’s perfect… Hoping to get my hands on an eclipse from Alt Cine built out of the micro. Then I will be set 🌞
Love it. The eclipse looks cool, but I don’t know too much about it, when does it ship? Also, the full frame is on sale right now!
Can you do an episode with that camera?
like make a full UA-cam video with it? if that's what you mean... 100% yes :)
@@BlaineWestropp1 yup, thats what i meant. Just to see how usable it can be and the limitations, doesnt have to be long either. Thanks 🙏
What do you think of the final quality of the OG vs sony fx30. Both are crop sensors.
fx30 is more crisp, and more what you'd expect from a modern camera today. the BM also only does 1080. now the newer BM cameras vs fx30.. that's a different story, but still depends heavily on your needs.
I bought one of these back in 2013. I sold it, I regret it but I hope the guy I sold it too used it well. I would love if BM remade this and kept it pocket and make it MFT so I can still use my current lenses 😊
I would love if they remade this. also.. that is always how I think of gear that I sold and regret.. hope its making good work!
How has it comparing to sony rx100 series which is also a pocket camera? would love to know if you happened to have used both already
I haven’t used an rx100, but it’s on my list :)
What the lens? I had ND filter and I got interested
This was my very first camera and it taught me so much ! And after more than 8 years, I've decided to film my first documentary with it !
I could have gone with way much better cameras, but budget cuts and the need to be discreet in some locations made me consider this option. Back to basics I guess... 😁
It’s a gem! I wish you good luck on the film and hope the og helps you make some magic 😎
Yes. How is manual focusing that little lumix lens?
nightmare lol. it has a motorized focus rocker on the side of the lens. so no focus ring. but it works with the auto focus button on the camera. so to get focus, I will use that button, let it find focus, then roll.
I've gotten used to it, there's also pretty much no other lens that stabilizes this well and is this small with the range.
8:30 that’s actually some solid advice.
thank you :)
@@BlaineWestropp1 hmm then why not use sachtler flowtech 75 instead of that?
Tripods are certainly the one really helps keep you grounded and makes like simple and I absolutely love dollies, I am not crazy about gimbals just as they're so over used though they certainly have a place and I think if you keep life simple use simple techniques you'll end up having a more impactful moment I'd try and leave out complications for a specific shot rather than the whole thing
Also the democracy of great filmmaking gear gets a lot of people trying these shots that unless your intentional with them won't actually add and will dilute what you're trying to say. Being more economical with the shots is a better way to be
What lens was this shot on? The barreling is pretty cool. Like the wide too.

Amazing camera I have 2.5k this when BM focused on film look rather then resolution it look like Alexa when I’m right hands
Love it! I like the 2.5k too!

Uh oh! 😕 I swear the batteries I have now are so much better than what I remember. They last for like 40 minutes
what's the panasonic/lumix drama? I missed it
Lumix announced s9, invited people to Japan to test it out, bunch of videos about the camera posted online (naturally). it sparked a debate about gear reviews, and the complexities of recommending equipment that has been given to you, or a significant trip or money related to camera review.
The Sigma FP is considered to be the spiritual successor to this camera to a lot of people. I love mine, you just really need to pair it with an OIS lens for handheld stuff due to how light the camera is.
I really need to get the FP in my hands. I hear great things!
Great video! What lens did you film you talking to the camera on? Looks great,
Hey thank you! That was an atlas mercury 36mm :)
An upgraded OG is what everyone wants since the release. They know it would be OP.
Yup. 100% agreed.
Looks like an S9 to me... jajajaj kiding.
😂😂😂
4:31 - I'd say the Sigma FP is the closest thing to it. Even does cDNG too.
Haven’t used the FP, really need to test it out.
Love OG
Love :)
Is it good for beginners?
In my opinion yes. Because it is similar in a way to how one would work on a large production. There are aspects you don’t have with this camera though, like 4k, internal ND, and auto focus. But.. I don’t think you need those things. It also depends what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot.
Love this pocketable camera
A true classic.
