i love how every other palace is just "hey look at how evil/sad/distorted these people are" but this one is basically saying "look at how sad YOU are" and it hits hard
I never noticed how the mementos map just keeps going down and down and down up until I got to the depths. It was a huge shock realizing that we were literally going to Hell itself as the final palace but fucking awesome at the same time.
@@Ty_Jac It seemed like that was what they were going for with this palace. Blood and bones everywhere, a prison and the fact that it is in the center of the earth on the map indicated for me that it was hell. And then the second part where mementos merged with reality was literally the beginning fo the apocalypse. Idk that's just how I saw it and why I liked it so much.
@@zombieslayer1945 ,I'm sure that the concept of the lat palace draws inspiration from Hell. I would say that it IS hell disguised as Heaven for the general public.
@@nobleradical2158 I just wish there was no "harem" route at all. It's a relic of a shitty age where people thought that betraying your lover's trust makes you a "chad"(i.e. a colossal jerkwad).
@@optimaltt6070 True, but the Persona games since 3 have always let you make bad choices worthy of a colossal jerkwad, and I don't know if that should go away. There should be a bad ending like there is for other bad choices tho.

Ann: "...It hurts hearing this."
It is kinda sad to see that there are some truth in the topic of humanity's public thoughts in Persona 5. Human fundamentally always want the easier way to solve their life's problem, which is why they willingly put themselves into cognitive prison and let the others decide it for them. It is easier to walk the path that someone gave it to you, than finding it yourselves for what you truly wants. Why ? Mostly because we, modern human would rather have a guaranteed, easier, and happy life, even though it is bland, monotone, dark/dirty, and shackled our own freedom for it. That exact reason is why modern society slowly but surely degenerating into sloth society, which include ignorance and avoiding heavy responsibility. That is also why, we, as the younger generation must make sure it must not happened for ourselves and the future generation =D P5 teaches us that we don't need special powers to do it. We just need kawaii grills and a smart black cat! LOL
Faintly-smiling Woman: "Social reform? I'm not interested. That stuff's lame anyway. Don't you think destruction's more pleasing?" Yusuke: "Destruction is...pleasing? She cannot be in her right mind. It is as though she wishes for the world to end..."
I kind of hate how soothing and almost comforting this song sounds when it’s the theme of the distorted desires of society itself, which was that someone else were to take the responsibility while everyone else blindly follows them.
I think that's kind of the point. The public desires what it does because it's easier, or in other words, more comfortable. So it make sense for this foreboding song to also sound somewhat soothing and comforting
it’s both relaxing and disturbing in my case. it’s a relaxing tune, while the meaning behind it (and some part of the song if you listened to it for long) is disturbing.
I hear a false sense of freedom in the song, something like feeling lost or your too far in to back out, i have a hard hearing a positive/relaxing tune in this song. Persona 5 did a great job on making somebody feel this way and make you feel that this is the end, the feeling of being abandoned or sabotaged and having an upbringing fits the song very well and in my case, would make me feel hopeless Usually when i listen to this song i have strange thoughts like i image somebody i know closely being hurt or maybe even die, but if i focus on the guitar in the song it makes the song sound like theres a slim change of changing the future and being given a second chance in your behaviour. Another thing i listen to is the violin or drums, it makes the song feel lost but also (as said before) given a second chance. The way Atlus designed this song can be so simple yet so complex, it can make you feel one way or feel a totally different way if you listen again. Hell, it can even change your thought process if you get too into it like i do. This song is so underrated because its often glazed over as “the repetitive song” or be connected with the mementos song, thinking about it now, the song can make you see the world as a different colour, whenever i listen i image the world as a gray abandoned vast-land or a corrupted pink-ish world filled with hate, this song is way easy too look over just as a sad or happy song, there are so many complex emotions and feeling when listening to this song.
Seeing Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, and Shido surprised me the most tbh. I didn't feel bad for them, but it did leave me worried about what was coming up next.
My first thought afterwards was, "Is this what happens to people whose hearts we changed? Was all our efforts all for nothing?" That's why I was hit so hard when the Phantom Thieves were being erased from existence...
@@smugsuphia7846 It's not exactly that, but it was a very likely result of it. The Phantom Thieves robbed their victims of all their desires, which left them as a human being without any motivation or aspirations. The reason Futaba and Sae didn't end up in there was because the Phantom Thieves gave them new hope themselves, but the others had to confess everything and got punished for it, believing that desires are inherently bad and just following others without any self-agency was the way to go. Before Kamoshida's palace was raided, Morgana told us about this, he said that people without desires have no reasons to live, possibly leaving them suicidal. The only reason this didn't happen was because they were "reformed", even though the only thing that changed was that they knew they couldn't atone for their sins with their death alone, so they accepted whatever punishment they got, in other words gibing up all self-agency and conforming to the masses. That made them the exact kind of person who imprisoned themself in Mementos. If the Phantom Thieves had looked for the culprits and tried to help them after their breakdown, they may have been able to reform them properly.
Yeah it is isn't it? But its a bit more melancholic in here...probably to convey that while we see how dreadful the palace is, to the people above its just normal...
Apathy is the killer of empathy. You'd rather ignore the evil of society and the suffering of others in favor of just wanting a false happiness and a sense of normalcy. Never stop standing up for what's right everyone, even if others tell you its meaningless. Because it isnt. Life must change. Let's make sure it's for the better.
Seeing all the protests and the world finally taking a big leap of faith really has me feeling more hopeful, it’s what the creators of this game would’ve wanted.
The more I scroll down, the more I feel that the smart P5 fans started to actually say that there is hope in reality. The more I scroll down, the more it feels like we’re united and that we want the same objective.
Splnter 64 , the best objective. The objective to a better society! We aren’t part of the Phantom Thieves, but we can change society. In name of what we need, what we love, what is good. Even if there’s some bastard criminal around, we still can take him down! With words, with perspectives, in name of peace! We cannot go to the Dephts of Mementos, but we can go into the Dephts of someone’s heart. To change it with our power. To steal the loved distorted desire’s ruler’s treasure, that it’ll change his selfish cognition. No playing God will rule over us! Nobody will! But we can't let it take us to the selfish side. We have limits, though. Now, let us change society!
God I sommehow got that ending on my first playthrough and thought that you had to get to that part again in NG+ to progress. I gave up on that theory and just did what I was supossed to
It's unnerving how the bones and veins increase in numbers the farther you go underground in that final area. At first you only that giant cluster of veins once you go inside, but during that first descend you see only a hellish red glow. Once you get near the second descend, the game gives you a wonderful view of the same hellish red glow along with massive structures that look like ribcages and those veins once again, and by the time you enter the Mysterious Shrine, those ribcages are *everywhere.* Even at the very start of the Path of Iwereth, there are gigantic bones that look like ribcages, and the railways themselves being made of bones instead of wood and steel once the players reached halfway through Mementos was a clear sign of what was to come.
I believe its to symbolize that you are getting near the heart of mementos since the heart is normally surrounded by your ribcage and veins its still creepy and as you said, unnerving
I love this as a bad ending credits. compared to p4's 'corridor' where it makes you feel like everything has been lost, this gives the feeling that everyone will keep on living and forget about you.
This song seems sad, but it also gives out a slight feeling of hope for everything to get better. Just can't believe how powerful the message of this last palace is.
There is hope now my friends do not worry we will improve the year that is 2020. The impossible can become possible if you make it so! ~Kaito Momota (Danganronpa V3)~
Not saying other palaces weren't but this palace seems so real... we all have things we don't want to think about, we also have times when we just give up... seeing not just one person, but a whole crowd of 'normal' people willingly being in this huge jail and not making any choices is just... haunting to say the least. My favourite palace for sure!
.. And it's pretty easy to end up in the "Prison of Regression". A _majority_ of people within our society gave up on trying or living, and just 'exist' or do what they're told.
Jesus is coming soon. Please, repent of all your sins. Ask him into your heart. This is your eternal soul! No more time for games, wake up! Most will perish in the tribulation coming up. Trust in Jesus while there is time! You must do it before he comes! Before it is too late!
Not to mention the foreboding of something more stronger, more deadly, more evil than Shido lying at the end of it, and you're marching straight to it.
For me it was the veins.. the skeletal and overall gorey look of the background.. the bones where no where near as bad when they appeared in the real world.. For me seeing all the veins leeching life out of the cells and crawling the walls, it made my stomach churn when I saw they where all going directly into a chalice. A very haunting place indeed..
I’ve read many of the comments, but I still feel broken and I can’t see what is right.I understand the game telling us we’re slowly becoming sloths but what I’m worried a bit about is that after I reflected on my self a bit I realized that I too have become a “sloth” if you will.Whats even worse is that I feel comfortable in my position. If things are wrong I leave within someone else’s hands to fix it for me while I laze around.Through playing this game I can finally realize the things I turn a huge blind eye too everywhere. As I am still young I feel it is not to late to reinvent myself.

It's amazing how reflective and thoughtful this song really is. The title: "Freedom and Security." They're complete opposites and the antithesis of each other, yet the contrast works in this sense. You could view it as being free and secure in the literal sense that you can live how you want without fear (which is Persona 5's overarching message). However, when the Phantom Thieves reach metaphorical 'Hell', they begin to realise that by freeing people of their sins, they are in fact encouraging others to give up on changing themselves. This enforces the idea that individual change is impossible, and that someone should instead wait to be 'saved' instead of taking control of their lives. Thus, they reach a twisted sense of freedom by entrusting their security to a higher power and relinquishing control as the nature of taking risks is to threaten one's security. If someone need not make any decisions for themselves, they see being imprisoned to an institution or a god as a worthwhile trade-off. And here we come to the state of society. The apathetic nature of humans means that much of our society is not concerned with making their own decisions, as they believe being cast out is a worse fate than taking an unpredictable leap of faith. We'd rather ride the same train every day for decades because we're told to than question what is really important to us. This is especially relevant in the context of Japan where it is socially expected that one must adhere to conformity, with many too scared to venture into the unknown and ask why. This facade of normality being what we should strive for is reflected in the song: it is relaxing yet eerily repetitive, with the intermittent escape of a lone guitar - almost begging for us to snap out of our trance. The last dungeon and its music is the culmination of Persona 5's ideas. The hopelessness of a society trapped in our own ways as we are too frightened to break the status quo and question what we should really be seeking. Without the reassuring blanket of a purpose, such as collecting our paycheck and finally getting that white picket fence, what are we going to do with our life? That's the scariest thing. If we don't settle for following the direction of society and accepting mediocrity, we run the risk of turning out as failures and outcasts. Being poor. Unwanted by others. Wandering aimlessly with no orders. Yet if we don't ask these questions and have faith in ourselves, we may never reach true happiness. I hope all of us Persona lovers discover our individualism and strive for what we really want out of life. Find what matters and fight for it.
Though I agree in the present, it just means that we must be creative. Find a way which makes us independent yet helpful to others, while bypassing modern problems. Without it being at the cost of ourselves. We must also spread awareness to that fact and (that’s the hard part) snap them out of said sloth, as we don’t want them to just shrug it off.
@@splnter648 I don't think even awareness is enough. It's even explored in the game when the Phantom Thieves release the truth about Shido, but nobody actually wants to actually acknowledge it, even if they are made aware. Instead, they'd rather forget the hard truths and live blind to it, because ignorance can be bliss. Honestly, I wouldn't even blame anyone for this since reality really is rough and often just depressing. We are usually happier when we're not thinking about such things. That's why the Phantom Thieves come to the conclusion that the world is better without the metaverse and people ultimately need to come to their own decision on what they think is best. All we can do is educate people so that they have the chance to make these choices in the first place. The education system shouldn't dismiss philosophy or politics. In fact, I feel like these things are perhaps purposefully neglected in order to keep people from having opinions. Instead, we're taught useless facts in history without hearing as much about the actual philosophies and ideas of (often, very smart and progressive) historical figures. But I agree with the rest. We need to start living for ourselves and find our own meanings. Structure is not for everybody, and some very creative people are stifled by it. However, there are also people who are more efficient with some kind of structure in their life. It would be ideal if there was a modern solution which was flexible for both types of people. I don't think anybody should feel forced to go against the grain if it's not who they are, and vice-versa.
The most powerful exchange in the game. You don't have an answer. How could you have one? What did they want to hear, anyway? *How would ANYONE respond to that question in that context?*
Well, hm, let's think, was it the right thing to change their hearts? Hm... In Futaba's case, yes, obviously, In Sae's case, yes, obviously, Kamoshida was serial sexual abuser with no hope of recovery and would've expelled us if he didn't, so yes, Madarame was abusing students, stealing work, plagiarising, and would've called the cops on us, so yes, Kaneshiro was a literal crime Lord and left us with actually no other choice, so yes, Shido was murdering people left and right with Akechi, so yes, Okumura, well, things didn't go so well for him or us after that, so maybe that one really was a tactical error, but mostly, that wasn't our fault, that was Akechi's doing, we were mostly trying save Haru, prevent the exploitation of thousands of employees, and catch Akechi, so, maybe not, but for reasons outside of our ability to predict or control. Yeah, I'd say it was the right thing to do.
@@tuckermatis1572 In the context, it means "was it a good idea to remove their desires?" Without new ones to change them, they had nothing. Futaba and Sae had those desires replaced, so they didn't end up like the others. Sae's became a desire to seek out true justice, while Futaba wanted to avenge her mom. They both rose against a cruel and unfair world, and while the current villains did those cruel and unfair things, maybe they could've been redeemed too. If we had a way to replace their Treasures with ones that couldn't corrupt, we could instill a sense of hope in them like we did with the general public. They had to be stopped, but what they got sent back to is the reason why they became the way they did in the first place. Ultimately, the Phantom Thieves just wanted to end suffering, and they did, so in the end, they did the right thing.
Because YOU could be an inmate in the Prison of Regression. How many times have you watched the news on some atrocity or scandal and did nothing about it? How many times have you surrendered yourself to a predetermined fate for the sake of comfort? Of all the Palaces, this is the one that's the most foreboding to me. Because we're all guilty of the sin of sloth.
It's probably because first of all the place it's played in is really f****** disturbing second is because it's a remix of Tokyo daylight and Jaldabaoth (Good God I hope I spelled it right) More specifically the melody is the humming in Tokyo daylight it uses the instruments as well as some of the melody from Jaldabaoth Noticeable at 42-50 Jaldabaoth This symbolism at least in my interpretation of it is the masses here are hearing the same Melody to them it's still a regular day But to us who are paying attention we can hear the drums and guitar of yaldabaoth someone who they think is protecting them but is actually controlling them They are mistaking Security for freedom Freedom and secu oh now I get the name (That's just my interpretation and I'm probably super Incorrect lol)
Persona 3, 4 and 5 spoilers ahead! I like how the Persona games always make you accomplish the opposite of what you are trying, but only let you know towards the end, when the thing you've tried to avoid has already reached the level of a god. Persona 3: You fight the 12 Shadows and long to defeat all of them so that the Dark Hour disappears and the Shadows can't "kill" (the victims do end up braindead) any more people, but in doing so give Nyx, the God of death, it's power back, practically dooming all of mankind. Persona 4: The whole game, you and your party are looking for the truth. You find two false culprits along the way and when, towards the end, you finally find the true killer, you're starting to realize the whole truth: That nobody WANTS to realize the truth. They'd rather live a lie and look away from pain and suffering. Persona 5: You take down all kinds of oppressors that treat people like slaves to try and give them courage and a chance at freedom. But in doing so, you make them rely on YOU instead. You make them want to further dedicate their lives to someone else's path and don't give them a single bit of courage. Basically, what modern Persona games show us about humanity is that instead of facing pain and suffering they run away. Be it through death, self deception or giving up their freedom, people don't want a good life: They just want an easy one. Only if you face hardships: Loss, Truth or Oppression, can you really discover your *true* self.
So the game implies something really fucked up in the depths of mementos but doesn't outright say it. All the people who's hearts you've stolen are down here. The only people who aren't are your confidants, who believe in the phantom thieves. We see from palace one to the end that the protagonists always managed to convince their targets that they were wrong and should become better people. But we also stole their treasure. But the palaces had begun to crumble before you managed to take the treasure and after you convinced the people that they were wrong. What I think this implies is that the protagonists aren't stealing people's distorted desires but are instead stealing their wills of rebellion. Think about it. Futaba awakened her Persona by joining with her shadow. Persona's are the manifestation of a person's will of rebellion. After she awakened her Persona, the treasure went missing. She became the treasure. Its implied that the reason that the bad guys all confessed was because you stole their heart, but if you actually instead stole their will of rebellion. That would explain why they all go and confess their crimes as well. Not from guilt, because if it really was guilt, then why wouldn't they all liquidate their assets and try to help people first and atone before throwing themselves in jail. Instead, they turn themselves in because they begin to adhere and follow societies laws. All the targets you went after usually hid inside their respective bedrooms for a few days before they turn themselves in. But after waking up from her nap, Futaba is perfectly okay. The other palace rulers went and hid for a few days because they were so used to disobeying society that they were confused as to what they were supposed to do with themselves. But Futaba still had a will of rebellion and instead managed to convince herself that she was wrong in hating herself. That would also explain why Sae and Mishima isn't there. You didn't steal their treasure, but just convinced them that he was wrong. Then again, the rest of the mementos targets weren't there either so that last one is just conjecture. At the end of the game, Yaldaboath vanishes after realizing the might of and hope of humanity in the form of Satanael. Morgana doesn't so much steal Mementos treasure as much as he just tapped it and gave it back to humanity. Gave them back their wills of rebellion. This is all just a hypothetical theory, but it feels to me like that is what the game is implying.
Sae and Mishima are Persona user without persona at the end They changed for good "fighting their Shadow" and in the end believing in what they had to do and in the PT For the other part,It Is pretty much the not said Truth
I agree with some points, but Personas and Shadows are not the will of rebellion, rather they are the true self, a side of yourself you hide from the public. But the main cast's true selves were their feeling of rebellion, which they had hid from others, just like the P4 cast's hidden secrets. I personally think that their distortions are within the Treasure, but when you defeat the shadow, I think they and their secrets get reunited with the real person and they realise their mistakes, which force them into an apathy.

You know how inside a Palace, you can see an icon of the Palace's ruler along with the alert meter when using the Third Eye (L1)? Was wondering who could be the ruler of the "origin of all Palaces," some big evil probably but when I used Third Eye inside it without thinking much and saw a glimpse of the icon I was like... "Holy shit... no fucking way..."
This Palace hit a bit too close to home for me. Humans locked in prisons enjoying their captivity, representing human life. For normal, working, everyday people, this feels all too familiar.
A cycle where you are trapped in and let it take you where ever it go. Reminds me of people going inside bullet trains in there unending jobs till death
The freedom not to choose, the freedom not to think, it's way to easy to just throw away your life by letting days blend in to weeks, weeks blending in to months, letting months, sometimes blend in to years. That's to say- if you basically just let life go on autopilot, are you really living life?
as someone who was a kid during the 2016 election and is feeling the same thing many young people are feeling right now, please do not give up. things may be rough, but there are, have always, and *will always* be people who are fighting for your freedom. i'm sorry that adults have failed you this time. but please continue to exist- if not for yourself, then for those who love you, for those *like* you who need hope. reach out to your community and protect and support each other as best you can. we will get through this.
This theme really encapsulates the idea that the masses have a role in the downfall of the world… that our collective sloth and unwillingness to change is the reason we still continue to suffer

The final parts of the game succeeded really well in giving you a sense of dread. Mementos looked strange but then in the final 3 layers there was imagery of blood, gore, bone structure and whatnot. It left the impression that mementos is a living, breathing place. And seeing this what yusuke would call “an assault on the senses” take over reality as well as seeing our characters in a state of immense fear and hopelessness is absolutely amazing at strengthening the dread you are meant to feel. The scenery is hellish, the main cast’s situation is hellish.
"This is a work of fiction. Any resemblances to real people or events is purely coincidence." Me after 1st palace: Are you sure about that? Me after 7th palace: Are you really sure about that? Me during 8th palace: ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT?
Each of the Palace bosses has at least one, often several real-life counterparts. They needed to put that disclaimer in there to protect themselves. Also, it was read by "Igor". So, you know, take it with a grain of salt.
*Spoilers??? Better safe than sorry* This palace was perhaps one of my favorites because anytime you listened to the "prisoners", you realized you and your team became more self-aware of their situation than ever before. Like, this is it: this is the last mission as the Phantom Thieves. This is what you all come together to stop in the end. The world isn't a hellhole, life isn't just endless struggles, and justice will prevail in the end--that's what you and your team have fought for this whole time, despite the distractions, the fame and the ultimate deceit. Goddamn, this game was beautiful.
Yeah, hearing everyone's thoughts from the cages really kind of fucked me up. That last palace just made me feel like existential dread the whole time. It was a rare trip I doubt I'll ever get again.
This is almost like Persona 5's version of 'Corridor' from 4, it's supposed to be unnerving and makes you think just how bad society has become in a sad and disturbing way. Except in Persona 5 you do see more of what the big bad's influence has on the people in the world, especially if you talk to the people in the cages and hear what they have to say, that was one of the most infamous parts of the game for me.
That’s why we must always oppose collectivism and socialism. Living free is the most important part of humanity. Without it, we imprison ourselves by our own will.
@@YOTSUBA_desu not real security LOL. The more freedom you have to do anything that doesn't harm anyone, the more security you have since you won't be caged or killed by authorities for victimless crimes
My reaction when I found out Mementos is the last dungeon: Really? That’s a bit anticlimactic. More train tunnels and jokes in Mona’s car? Gimme a break! My reaction when I saw Mementos’ true form, a hellscape that houses all the souls of the world and home to a literal god: Oh...
honestly i was really happy shido wasent the final boss due to me being used to persona bosses being hard as hell i spent around 5 hours creating the ultimate persona (no not the one you find on the internet cuz i didnt have the social links/confidants for that, it was just as good tho) then i get to the "final boss" shido and he fucking dies in 4-6 turns and im like... "the fuck!?" needless to say i wasent nearly as lucky with the REAL final boss still beat him first try tho :3 took forever to beat him but im proud of myself uwu
This perfectly encapsulates the despair of the situation the Thieves find themselves in as well as the area itself. Totally devoid of free will or choice any who dare enter the depths of Mementos. The thieves themselves are trapped in the sense that they cannot leave the palace as they have no idea when the authorities will arrive to arrest them. It almost feels like everything they’ve been through up to this point has been for nothing, they have no assured measures of escape or triumph at this point, all they can do is blindly plunge into the dark depths of this bleak underworld hoping for redemption.
The soundtrack is incredible The story’s well written and amazing The designs are superb The art is gorgeous The gameplay is astonishing And yet people are having waifu wars
It’s scary how true this is. This isn’t a fictional villains twisted ideals, it’s actual humanity. These aren’t fictional characters, they’re me and you. This is what we’ve grown to believe. This palace is genius.
I love the final palace. Not only do you have to fight society itself but also the stakes are the biggest yet. You have one chance or it's all over. And the utter mystery of what the palace is supposed to be, all converging in the holy grail. And I will never forget getting kicked out of mementos and watching the world end for the first time. Finding out Igor wasn't really him and fusing lavenza. I love it. And the hype of returning back to mementos fused reality only for life will change to play for the final time. I'll never forget just how hyped I felt. And the ending was so good
It still doesn't beat Nyx Avatar tho. That moment when you finally reach the top of tartarus after 60 days of buildup...gives me goosebumps every time I think about it. This game's climax is a close second, however.
Man, this song sided with Mementos Depths' atmosphere is so goddamn unsettling. Even the title "Freedom and Security" sounds unnerving considering what Mementos is supposed to be. Mementos Depths always gives me goosebumps.
Context is everything. listening to the song as a song, it's pretty calming. listening to it in the bad ending it sounds like good has been defeated. Listening to it in the final dungeon, it sounds hopeless, as if the end is coming. When you hear it there, It's not a heroic song of resistance like in final dungeons of other games, but one of quiet acceptance and willful submission.
Even Rivers in the Desert and Live Will Change can't compare to this. This theme is just the best thing in whole game (excluding persona fusion, breaking the game since 1996 if you know what you're doing). Guitar is nailing it with those eerie sounds, and it matches perfectly with this prison theme. Design of this palace deserves its own reward. It's creepy and beautiful at the same time
I do love Rivers in the Desert; an upbeat, motivating and get-up-and-kick-ass type of tune. But this is almost like drone metal: weighing down, oppressing your very soul. Also a beautiful melody for how depressing the (basically) last dungeon is.
Ya this theme ( personally) carries the most emotion for me especially since I first got the bad ending then true... Fuck I felt so sad when I got the bad ending I felt unbelievably confused, angry , and depressed. The game guinely taught me a life lesson I'll never forget, and hearing this theme again in mementos depths had me so sad
In the first teaser trailer for this game, there are chairs and shackles holding them down. This dungeon, showing humanity in those same chains, tells us gamers in our chairs that “You are slave, want emancipation?” This dungeon is a warning to us. The final palace shows us proof of our oppression, and the trailer poses a question that gives us a choice: to reform society like the Phantom Thieves did, or remain safely in our seats, forever held down to a harmful mentality by our own ignorance. That is the message I believe this whole part is trying to convey to us.
Pramila Gandhi True, but technically its only Tokyo. Its themes can be applied to most other places in our reality, but the whole idea of being packed into subway trains and shuffling off to work in a huge crowded city with apathy towards this oppressive system is kinda supposed to be a commentary about Tokyo. Nothing against Japan, but trains, commuters, crowded places, and quiet (supposed) indifference are things that are kinda unique to them, specifically the combination of these things at once.
PlasmaTempest39 While this story is centered around Tokyo, it’s the same thing with others as well. To limit this and only say it applies to japan and their culture is not entirely true is all I was trying to say. I was speaking to the oppression and lack of willfulness to others and walking around with our “eyes wide shut” while other things are taking place that many others would say it doesn’t apply to me so why should I care. But yes you have a very valid point as well.
using third eye and seeing the icon for the palace ruler for the first time sent a genuine chill down my spine. this whole palace was some heavy stuff.
While I may identify with maruki’s palace more this one definitely makes me feel responsible for all the failures I’ve done, the almost complete immobility to escape an extreme pain that slowly encroaches on my location… it just makes me feel so much Guilt for my inactions, my fear of being an outcast overwhelming what I need to do as a human being and knowing just how painful yet easy it is to succumb to this sensation… it’s like being slowly crushed to death but by the weight of your own sins instead of someone else’s decisions. Maruki resembles the determination to prevent suffering while sacrificing himself to it all… by becoming a Self sacrificing god he abandons his humanity for the greater good only to force himself to go through unimaginable levels of suffering for the sake of preventing suffering… by preventing the suffering of many he has to go through equivalent exchange which means he experiences all the pain, while if Maruki was successful the world would be better as a whole, it would not allow growth… Maruki may be selfless and kind, his determination to help others being far stronger than his fear of isolation from even the most loved ones, this determination will not last forever as at some point Maruki may end up just like a being trapped in the holy grail’s influence… the exceptional desire to help others being so potent that the belief that one will stay true to their beliefs in eternity is unlikely… we are all prone to falling into the same metaphysical cage that society is trapped in by the fear of breaking the status quo/ unwillingness to break it. Unfortunately these cages are meant to bind one’s will to achieve true freedom, however these cages can be broken, it just requires the determination to break free from traditional bindings. You can do it my friends, we cannot be bound by chains that only cause us suffering. Break free from societal constraints and norms as they are meant to confine a will to exist as a genuine human being
This place was so well done. The people mumbling “I feel so safe” was super eerie, and the veins running through it made it feel so disgusting and sinister
I love how soothing this theme is, not because of how it sounds but because of what it makes you feel. Since Mementos represents the sin of sloth, this theme acts like a Siren call to everyone in the prison. They know where they are, but what’s the point of breaking free? Especially if the rest of the public is there with them. This actual theme is very short and repetitive, and even catchy, because it’s meant to be a very simple tune that hypnotises you and runs in the back of your head with no extra effort. The song‘s length represents the short attention span and impatience of city-dwellers. It restarts before your mind wanders too far.
Alexander Leonardi It IS in human nature for people to attempt to take the easy way out of their problems. The problem here lies in the fact that people don't think very hard about the consequences of taking unnecessary shortcuts in life.
@@Mo_Kit4869 Persona 5 warns us at the start of the game.... "This story is a work of fiction" "Similarities between characters or events to persons living or dead in your world are purely coincidential"
To me, this song always left a harrowing feeling in my gut, especially with how the palace was portrayed. The constantly pulsating imagery, the eerie blood red glow.. coupled with the music, it strangely made me feel conscious of my own heartbeat, probably because of how this palace just so happens to resemble that of a huge conglomeration of veins. It was honestly such an unsettling experience as it left quite a disturbing impression of me yet it is also because of this strange atmosphere that lead to me loving how pretty well established the dungeon came out to be. That’s SUPPOSE to be how it should feel. Oppressive. Sinister. Foreboding. I could practically hear the alarm bells ringing in my head.
One Fairy Yeah now that I think about it a palace is the inside of somebody's heart and mementos depths looks like the inside of a heart. That's really haunting, to me at least
I eventually realized that this place's theme is the cirulatory system, because the most important organ in there, where all veins lead to, is the Heart itself, the literal representation of what The Phantom Thieves of *Hearts* steal

One of the most genuinely haunting things I have ever seen is fucker just giving up on life. And not as in them wishing for death, I mean real complacency, no longer working towards anything, no goals set in mind, a husk wasting away. The guy whose hands could shape the world, who you knew could literally be or do anything he desired, becomes drunken fat fuck who can’t even be bothered to get up from his chair, wasting away in an unkept apartment I guess I just wish I could’ve been there for you This shit hit home
Fun Fact: I had no Idea my 1st play through that this was final dungeon and final area music. I thought there was more to come but still danced my ass off to this song. I wish there was more though cause this game already offered so much. I wasn't prepared for the final area and got my ass handed to me by the enemies. Still a fun area as was the entire game.
For some reason this isn’t many peoples favorite palace theme, but it’s one of my favorites. It really gives off the feeling of trying to preserve the freedom of everyone even in the face of people’s desire for control and safety.
They're all present. Because as a society, we're not just guilty of acedia, sloth, whatever you call it. We're guilty of all of the deadly sins. In ways we wouldn't expect.
I've always loved RPGs, and yet I always felt like none were scratching the extremely specific itch I wanted. Then Persona 5 Royal came to the Switch and I got to play it, and I was absolutely blown away. While I have yet to play any other Persona game, this game right here has to be the best game I have ever played, bar-none. When I got to this point in the game, the atmosphere and this music alongside the context of what led to this point...it captivated me to a point I didn't think was still possible with some of the games I've played. This song and this game are both masterpieces.
That's awesome to hear. I played this for the 3rd time on the Switch since it's been a while, and I forgot how eerie and disturbing the Depths Palace is. The music is so good
Coming here the day after election night. This is where I feel our country is, the ignorant masses continue to support a madman who despises the unique things that the people have to offer up, and will enrich his own life at the cost of all others. Vanity of Vanities, all is vanity. But we still have the potential to rid ourselves of our twisted desires. We just have to wait until the time is right, for the masses to awaken to their situation, and together we might take our heart. I wish all of you the best of luck, and I hope that when we all come back together, we can make things right.
it was bittersweet when you finish a persona game; it's like waking up from a dream that lasted 40 years and everyone you got to know and the strong bonds you got to make and the adventures you have completed were only figments of your imagination. You wake up, knowing that its all over, but only you have documentation of what really happened. Then life continues, unable to return, and it's just hard to say goodbye. "Do you want to live forever"? Maybe, but everything must come to an end.
Finally played Persona 5 as a 20/21 year old and this song just makes me reflect how I have no real goals or dreams, or aren't even pursing a career, I'm lost and this song really makes me reflect on that. I hope to change my path
I hope this helps out but u keep going down this path and trust the wrong people u gonna end up like Joker in the bad Akechi ending. If you know, you know. Hope u wake up from that nightmare considering your comment is pretty recent...
It's so interesting to see how this basic concept of everyone's desires being harbored into a singular being, turned into the entire jail system of Persona 5 Strikers. I absolutely love seeing more of these jails and saving the public by taking their hearts back. The final "palace" was Yaldabauth's monarch.
After recently finishing p5r i can say that this song is a BOP but also gives off unsettling and stressful vibes. I just couldn't explain to anyone how powerful this song is and I'm impressed they could compose something so unique that works the way it does. Not to mention this song fits the depths of mementos' atmosphere and the uncertainty you feel when exploring so perfectly. Definitely a top 5 for me.
You can really feel the palace’s message through the music in this palace. This is why I would say that palaces like Maruki’s or Futaba’s are the best because you can hear the emotion within the music but with other palace themes or whims of fate, it rather matches the vibe of a palace.
Calm, yet eerie. Mellow, not upbeat. You can listen to it for awhile. Gives you that final dungeon feel. Feels like your marching to confront the enemy. Yet at the same time you can listen to it while lounging around your very home. Your very room. Males you wanna just relax, maybe get some work done, but definitely not play a fast paced video game. If you couldn't tell by all the other comments that talk about it already... it suits the idea of a prison you willing sit in regardless of what happens around you very well. It gives off the vibe of a calm, relaxing and safe strong hold. Yet for those who refuse to sit behind bars of their own mind... it sounds quite eerie, almost creepy givin the fact of the scenery around you, listening to those who wish to do no more than sit around and wait for what the world orders them to do next, without wanting to do anything for themselves. Yeah, you've probably already read what I've said somewhere else here 1,000 times, considering how far down in the comments mine probably is.
Man, the depths of mementos was so fascinating. I went out of my way to talk to all the caged people, to hear why they wanted that prison. It was very freakish to see them talk about how they hated controlling their own life and just wanted to rot in their prison so they wouldn't have to think.
As much as relaxing this song is, it sounds oddly... calming in a way, but you feel like something is wrong, but you simply ignore and turn a blind eye to it. An amazing song!
This whole palace was astounding. Coming back to mementos on New Game plus was extremely unnerving, considering we now know what resides underneath mementos, waiting for its chance to eradicate human will. Kudos, Atlus.
The use of this theme in the 8th palace is what makes it my favorite palace theme. It's the only palace theme that feels hopeless, and truly fits the atmosphere. It's really depressing when you see that everyone would rather be controlled than have their own free will, as long as being controlled let them live happily. Best palace theme. I rest my case.
i love how every other palace is just "hey look at how evil/sad/distorted these people are" but this one is basically saying "look at how sad YOU are" and it hits hard

I never noticed how the mementos map just keeps going down and down and down up until I got to the depths. It was a huge shock realizing that we were literally going to Hell itself as the final palace but fucking awesome at the same time.
wasn't literal hell just the very depths of mementos.

LOL

I kind of hate how soothing and almost comforting this song sounds when it’s the theme of the distorted desires of society itself, which was that someone else were to take the responsibility while everyone else blindly follows them.
I don't think I'd call this song comforting
I think that's kind of the point. The public desires what it does because it's easier, or in other words, more comfortable. So it make sense for this foreboding song to also sound somewhat soothing and comforting
It represents the sloth of society, it makes sense it sounds soothing.

To people who haven't played persona 5 this song is pretty relaxing. To people have this song can be very disturbing
it’s both relaxing and disturbing in my case. it’s a relaxing tune, while the meaning behind it (and some part of the song if you listened to it for long) is disturbing.
I hear a false sense of freedom in the song, something like feeling lost or your too far in to back out, i have a hard hearing a positive/relaxing tune in this song. Persona 5 did a great job on making somebody feel this way and make you feel that this is the end, the feeling of being abandoned or sabotaged and having an upbringing fits the song very well and in my case, would make me feel hopeless
Usually when i listen to this song i have strange thoughts like i image somebody i know closely being hurt or maybe even die, but if i focus on the guitar in the song it makes the song sound like theres a slim change of changing the future and being given a second chance in your behaviour.
I new game Plus this game 3 times now and I don’t know whether it relaxing or disturbing I’m willing to just say it’s both

Just realized the main melody in this song is nearly the same as the humming in tokyo daylight... thats some creepy shit
Yeah it is isn't it? But its a bit more melancholic in here...probably to convey that while we see how dreadful the palace is, to the people above its just normal...

I can't be the only one who was unnerved by all the veins and bones within the depths of Mementos, right?
I actually thought Mementos is alive
It's unnerving how the bones and veins increase in numbers the farther you go underground in that final area. At first you only that giant cluster of veins once you go inside, but during that first descend you see only a hellish red glow. Once you get near the second descend, the game gives you a wonderful view of the same hellish red glow along with massive structures that look like ribcages and those veins once again, and by the time you enter the Mysterious Shrine, those ribcages are *everywhere.*
Even at the very start of the Path of Iwereth, there are gigantic bones that look like ribcages, and the railways themselves being made of bones instead of wood and steel once the players reached halfway through Mementos was a clear sign of what was to come.
they remind me of my childhood

Not to mention the foreboding of something more stronger, more deadly, more evil than Shido lying at the end of it, and you're marching straight to it.

Find what matters and fight for it.
damn this just got deep
Ironic as it is (Not individualistic),I agree with your views.
Well said
Though I agree in the present, it just means that we must be creative.
"Was changing their hearts really a good thing...?"
"..."
The most powerful exchange in the game.
You don't have an answer.
How could you have one?
What did they want to hear, anyway?
*How would ANYONE respond to that question in that context?*
They beat Kaneshiro so yeah
Wow, they weren't playing the victims. When they all said "I'm a victim, too!", they were talking about being imprisoned in Mementos.
Well, hm, let's think, was it the right thing to change their hearts? Hm...
In Futaba's case, yes, obviously,
In Sae's case, yes, obviously,
Kamoshida was serial sexual abuser with no hope of recovery and would've expelled us if he didn't, so yes,
Madarame was abusing students, stealing work, plagiarising, and would've called the cops on us, so yes,
Kaneshiro was a literal crime Lord and left us with actually no other choice, so yes,
Shido was murdering people left and right with Akechi, so yes,
Okumura, well, things didn't go so well for him or us after that, so maybe that one really was a tactical error, but mostly, that wasn't our fault, that was Akechi's doing, we were mostly trying save Haru, prevent the exploitation of thousands of employees, and catch Akechi, so, maybe not, but for reasons outside of our ability to predict or control.

Persona 3, 4 and 5 spoilers ahead!
I like how the Persona games always make you accomplish the opposite of what you are trying, but only let you know towards the end, when the thing you've tried to avoid has already reached the level of a god.
Persona 3:
You fight the 12 Shadows and long to defeat all of them so that the Dark Hour disappears and the Shadows can't "kill" (the victims do end up braindead) any more people, but in doing so give Nyx, the God of death, it's power back, practically dooming all of mankind.
Persona 4:
The whole game, you and your party are looking for the truth. You find two false culprits along the way and when, towards the end, you finally find the true killer, you're starting to realize the whole truth: That nobody WANTS to realize the truth. They'd rather live a lie and look away from pain and suffering.
Persona 5:
You take down all kinds of oppressors that treat people like slaves to try and give them courage and a chance at freedom.
Stuff like this is why I scroll through comment sections

This is some deep shit bro
I guess you picked the freedom and security ending rather than the true one where you kill Yaldabaoth
This is an excellent comment, I'm glad I came here
So the game implies something really fucked up in the depths of mementos but doesn't outright say it.
This comment is a year old...how has it not gotten the attention it deserves?
Sae and Mishima are Persona user without persona at the end
They changed for good "fighting their Shadow" and in the end believing in what they had to do and in the PT
For the other part,It Is pretty much the not said Truth
I agree with some points, but Personas and Shadows are not the will of rebellion, rather they are the true self, a side of yourself you hide from the public. But the main cast's true selves were their feeling of rebellion, which they had hid from others, just like the P4 cast's hidden secrets. I personally think that their distortions are within the Treasure, but when you defeat the shadow, I think they and their secrets get reunited with the real person and they realise their mistakes, which force them into an apathy.

Its depressing, but in the society we live in, more often than not, that is the only way to "live". :(
This hits too close to home right now.

This palace was perhaps one of my favorites because anytime you listened to the "prisoners", you realized you and your team became more self-aware of their situation than ever before.
An all or nothing risk they must take to make sure everything they fought for wasn't for nothing. To put an end to the madness once and for all.

PlasmaTempest39 Mementos is a direct / visual representation of what’s happening with us right now.

The creepy thing is how similar this is to reality, people allowing things like prejudice, and rejecting the choice to think for themselves

Alexander Leonardi It IS in human nature for people to attempt to take the easy way out of their problems. The problem here lies in the fact that people don't think very hard about the consequences of taking unnecessary shortcuts in life.
It's horrifying how recent events have caused this theme to just radiate all throughout my mind...
Me too, I've been seeing alot of similarities between the game and real life nowadays

One Fairy
Yeah now that I think about it a palace is the inside of somebody's heart and mementos depths looks like the inside of a heart. That's really haunting, to me at least
When the final dungeon has more personality then the final boss.
I eventually realized that this place's theme is the cirulatory system, because the most important organ in there, where all veins lead to, is the Heart itself, the literal representation of what The Phantom Thieves of *Hearts* steal
Crazy how relevant this song has been since its release.
Here in 2022 it's more relevant then ever.

One of the most genuinely haunting things I have ever seen is fucker just giving up on life. And not as in them wishing for death, I mean real complacency, no longer working towards anything, no goals set in mind, a husk wasting away. The guy whose hands could shape the world, who you knew could literally be or do anything he desired, becomes drunken fat fuck who can’t even be bothered to get up from his chair, wasting away in an unkept apartment
I guess I just wish I could’ve been there for you
This shit hit home
Best Christmas song ever
Lol Yeah
"Is this what they call a white christmas?"
Fun Fact: I had no Idea my 1st play through that this was final dungeon and final area music. I thought there was more to come but still danced my ass off to this song. I wish there was more though cause this game already offered so much. I wasn't prepared for the final area and got my ass handed to me by the enemies. Still a fun area as was the entire game.
ya want more? oh boy just you wait...
For some reason this isn’t many peoples favorite palace theme, but it’s one of my favorites. It really gives off the feeling of trying to preserve the freedom of everyone even in the face of people’s desire for control and safety.
I can hear futaba's palace song in this
Alefn its the coallation of everything. You hear bits and pieces of every palace. The drum part ik is to represent Shidos palace
I can kinda hear Kanashersos palace theme aswell
Can slightly hear Kamoshithead’s

They're all present. Because as a society, we're not just guilty of acedia, sloth, whatever you call it. We're guilty of all of the deadly sins. In ways we wouldn't expect.
This fits so well, it's almost creepy.
I think the bass beat is similar to Tokyo daylight
The music is so good
It's scary how many things can be represented by this theme.
Well put, good luck to all of us.
now we know that life will change
just played this part while recovering from a decade-long depression. shit hits different. i can really see my past self in those prisoners
it was bittersweet when you finish a persona game; it's like waking up from a dream that lasted 40 years and everyone you got to know and the strong bonds you got to make and the adventures you have completed were only figments of your imagination. You wake up, knowing that its all over, but only you have documentation of what really happened. Then life continues, unable to return, and it's just hard to say goodbye. "Do you want to live forever"? Maybe, but everything must come to an end.
You wake up, get up get out there.
I agree , P5 have absolute bangers. Some are lit af and some carry a heavy meaning
This song needs more publicity in the phandom
agreed, truly an underrated gem
This absolutely.
Also, good propic. Futaba = The Best
I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE
It really does..
The fact that this is just a slowed down and depressing version of Tokyo Daylight has always fascinated me. This game is a masterpiece.
Was that not for shido's palace?
This is for sure my favourite track of the game
If you ask me, Yaldabaoth didn't know how big humanity's sloth actually is.
A theme with the meaning of contentment and settling for sadness. A theme fit for a society.
This theme popped in my head with everything that’s going on in DC at Capital Hill right now...
@@MrBig23435 this theme has been playing in america since 1776. that country is a goddamn mess, nothing new
