- After a LONG break i felt to do one of my personal favorites in Okami, the boss theme for The nine-tail fox. This is by far one of the best songs in Okami (imo).

the fact that you meet ninetails the same way you do with the other brush gods, and where you fight in the world where you meet those gods, just shows how powerful the fox became.
However, it was all an illusion - Kyuubi was simply displaying how high and mighty it thought of itself.

Ninetales is NOT a "god". She/He just PRETEND to be one. In reality she/he is just a Yami's lackey (demonstrated by her/his reverent dialogues towards him), and most of his "divine" power comes from the Fox Rods. Once you destroy his tails (and the Fox Rods for extension), his illusions disappear and the TRUE nature and appearance of the fox comes to the surface: An old and emancipated Yokai fox, devoid of an eye and ANYTHING that could classify her as "god". A miserable being in practice.
Nothing a few extresism L cant fix!
The realm you fight in is a fake, as you can tell as some details of the platform remain unlike the real visits to the spirit realm.
Ninetails isn't even a real kitsune, she relies on the souls of eight other souls to give it the farce of being a kitsune.
And the tube foxes stole ink from Ammy.
All of its abilities are nothing but an act to mock Ammy.
The tsuki-kitsune, or ghost fox, either possesses a woman's body or creates a body of it's own. The fox is neither described as a man nor woman, but it's usual victims are, in fact, women. Amaterasu, according to legend, brought down Orochi with her to engage in combat. But Kamiki Village was nearby, and Orochi, every 100 years, terrorized the village and threatened to wipe them off the face of Nippon. After he was defeated, his body was split into 4 beings, Ninetails was one of them.

The sword on Kyuubi's mouth, it's a Seven Branched Sword, used for ceremonial purposes, it originated in Korea but was implemented into Japanese culture as well.
True, but... this isn't a Seven Branched Sword, but a bastardized version of that sword with Nine branches.
I love Ninetails as one of the primarily antagonists. He's just so evil and so cool, I mean look at him, he's a false god, he's got an awsome mask, a sword, and nine brush-like tails that paint with red ink/or maybe blood? I mean, he beats the hell out of a lot of nowdays videogame antagonists.
Not to mention he/her fights you on equal footing matching you power with power IN THE GODS REALM OF ALL THINGS

I remember hearing somewhere that a Ninetails, once having reached nine tails, is supposed to get more powerful as they LOSE their tails, eventually hitting one and becoming a Kyuubi. Instead, what we get is a sad, pathetic fox demon that just doesn't know when it's beat.
All we got was an old fox that was angry at old gods and took revenge upon Ryoshima and the Sei-an Quarters.
Yami was enticed by that for its own reasons.

Caster Tamamo-no-Mae Yeah, so I went back and looked in up online and in a couple of books and whatnot. If there was ever any recorded version of the Ninetails who reached its ninth tail and then got MORE powerful as it LOST them again, well I certainly can’t find it.
I think it’s safe to say I just pulled this one out of my ass. I have no idea where I got this from. My bad.
@@andyoats I know this comment is from years ago but it's said that when a good fox (one who serves Inari) becomes 1000 years old they become a tenko (celestial fox). Tenko are usually depicted as having 4 tails, as opposed to the 9 of a 800 year old fox. Once the tenko becomes 3000 years old they become a kuuko, they reach their maximum power and they completely lose their tails.
this part of the game is my favorite it's so Epic, From the moment when you meet Rao and all the way to the fight with Nine tails.

In Japanese lore, foxes, which are known as kitsune, can transform into either male or female humans regardless of the actual gender of the fox. And on a side note, the number of tales represents age, wisdom and power for foxes and the maximum number a fox can have is nine.
They are real entities causing havoc, usually for people with large personal power
Something weirder I learned, is that their tails fall off once they live past a certain age, but only five of then do leaving the Kitsune with four tails. And supposedly this is the strongest and wisest they can be...
This is TRULY the most intense song for an Okami boss! It's really amazing!

Ondiine Smadja I LOVE Okami too, as well as the beloved characters! I've purchased the HD version over last couple weeks, and man i've been having a blast playing it nonstop! Now THAT...is what I call a REAL video game ^^

Maybe Ninetails was a spirit. In some Japanese folklore stories kitsune were fox spirits; some were beneficial to people and to nature, but most kitsune were mischievous. Ninetails could be based off from Tamamo no Mae' because both kitsune were just pure evil shape shifters.

Kitsune also gain a tail every 1000 years. So, while Kitsune were mischievous, they were also wise with age.

Ninetails aka Kyuubi is just a type of Kitsune and Tamamo-no-Mae is a individual name of one specifically infamous. Also most Kitsune are in fact servants of goddess Inari, just people most commonly know about those mischievous what in fact are quite rare.

Plus all her divided forms were women or all kinds, busty Rao, fat girl, slim girls for various kinds, old "gilf".

I’ve played this game at least a hundred times and whenever I hear this particular theme..I still get very excited. My forgetful self tends to do a happy dance while kicking ass.
this song is my most favorite in the game of okami and ninetailes is my most favorite boss in the game
I thought the constellation was just another brush god. Then I saw the silhouette of the "god" itself, and I knew what I was in for.

I have the artbook and Ninetail's bestiary entry said that he was a boy, but i call Ninetails an it.
Ninetails has elements in his design that hint at his true nature. Notice how all but one of his tails has a kitsune mask? The masked ones are actually the foxes in the fox rods. His real tail is the centermost one with beads on it.
Definitely my favorite Okami boss. It felt like a fight between equally matched rivals, like Mario vs. Sonic.
this year i got really intersted into japanese mythology, so i thought i should try out okami. now i herd this i defintaly need to play it.

If you know every mythological reference the game has, it makes the game very interesting. Also try Okamiden for the DS afterwards.

i think issun reffered to ninetail as a she because most of his action used rhao body. the gender of ninetail itself isnt really specified but it does seem very at ease to act very feminine

No. There are many Kyuubey's/Ninetail's but this specific infamous one is Tamamo-no-Mae and she is she.
+TheRezro That's what i thought too, but i've researched Ninetails' background and it turns out it's gender is anyone's guess. being called lord is a male's title, as is the voice. And i'm well aware that this awesome beast is based on Tamamo-no-mae, like how Ammy is based on the sun goddess of japan.
Your all forgetting that Kitsune have two types the Inari kind are deities while the wild Kitsune like Nine Tails is evil many of these were males while females were regarded as goddess of the shrine while males acted like teenagers or evil demons like our Nine Tailed friend here

Ninetails has no gender. It's a collab of different souls trapped in the tails, both men and women alike.
As for the original eyeless fox, we will probably never know. I'd have to say male due to the large size, but that's just me.
pretty sure the creator said it was male, and ya it's not even a true nine tails, its tails were as you said manifestations as in Japanese myth even plain shinto (before the fusion of shinto/bhudism) Kitsune tails were invulnerable, which is why you can't harm its TRUE tail but you break the others (their fake).

I always heard you couldn't break any of their tails, but they had a magic glass sphere that contained their soul either carried in their mouth or center tail, called the hoshi no tama (Soul Orb) and destroying that would take them out. It becomes a pearl necklace when they possess a human. In one story someone managed to steal a kyubi's soul orb, leaving the fox indebted to him, it later saved his life from a bandit raid.
In the legend of Tamamo No Mae/Kyuubi or in China Daji or India Lady Kayo Kyuubi always appear as a beautiful maiden and playing as an advisor so that she could deceive emperors and rulers making them corrupt rulers she was only defeated in japan by an exorcism of a group of Onmyoji's (Japanese Mages or priests)

never got to play the game too much but was excited by the tittle (usually Okami refered to "Inari Okami" also refered to as "Oinari" was a Kitsune/Fox god of rice, craftmanship, etc... but found out it was a wolf instead which confused me, but still looks like a good game, hopefully I can try it out soon lmao, least 9 tails was based on Tamamonomae, and has a really sick theme apparently =3. And to be honest Inari I believe had 1000 tails , as it was the "mother" of their creation. There are also hints and other myths that claim Tamamonomae had 1000 tails from consuming the souls of emperors as well. Though those tend to be fairly hard to find even on the internet = /

It's a pun, O-Kami (を-神) is the honorific term for a shinto god, any of them. OOkami(狼) is the japanese word for a wolf.

NGL this is probably the one boss where they REALLY should've just stuck with calling it "Kyubi"; renaming it to "Ninetails" is gonna cause people to mix it up with Ninetales the Pokemon. @_@

What would be nightmare fuel is if they merged together..
We would get Penny-Tails, The Nine Headed Clown that would have a hunched-over posture, and it continues to eat people to gain more power. The 'tails' could be sewed on curtails that mimic fox tails.
If anyone decides to draw that sort of abomination, my only request is.. please make some of the heads look fox-like.

we all remember how amaterasu came along. susano awakes orochi and since shiranui is dead amaterasu comes as his spirit. so why cant nine tails be an off spring of orochi or something he does have nine tails
