A garage quoted $2000 to replace all four and a leaky valve cover gasket which soaked the coil packs. Thanks for saving her a bunch of money. This should be a fun father/daughter project.
You have no idea how much money you just saved me, I've gone into so much credit card debt because of these coils misfiring over the years ;; I thought it would be so much harder
Great video! My daughter had her Kia Rio 250 miles away at college a year ago the last time the car was misfiring. A good dealership near her took care of the problem by replacing the #1 coil pack. Well now she is only 50 miles away and says it is misfiring again. I am good wrenching on a '67 Mustang but admit new cars intimidate me a little bit. Your video showed me that this job is easy so I will toss my tool bag and code reader in the truck, stop by Autozone for another coil pack and head on down to help her. I know it can be a bunch of other things too, but for $75 I will take a chance. Thank you!
I'm glad I found your channel! Very informative videos. I am learning how to do a bit of minor maintenance and saving money through your content. Thanks!
Thank you for the video . I have one question if I may ? If I am replacing all 4 coil packs does it matter which one goes or will the new ones be labeled? I got a box of 4 . Thank you again . Kimberly
If you’re getting a specific cylinder misfire, remove that coil and move it to another cylinder. If the misfire moves to that cylinder then the coil is bad. If it doesn’t move then it could be the spark plug.
Hi. Very useful video. Thank you very much. I replace all 4 spark plugs and all 4 coils. All 8 parts with OEM replacements parts. took it for a test drive then plug in to see if any codes showed up and I am still getting P0300 "multiply cylinder misfires" What do you recommend I do next? Additional information: After changing all four spark plugs and all four coils my 2012 Kia Rio turned on smoothly and runs smoothly but it starts to shake/hesitate after 3-4 hours of use. Once that happens I can not go above 25/30 mph with P0300 showing up.
Odelis FAJARDO there are several things that can continue to cause that, your Injectors, vacuum leak etc. Since you’ve already replaced the plugs and coils you may want to take it to a mechanic to have it diagnosed.
@@PhillipsVision thank you very much for your quick reply and insight on the problem. How can I check if the coil wires are working properly in order to work myself through the process of elimination?
Odelis FAJARDO to complete a process of elimination, you would need to get a specific cylinder misfire. In that case you can swap the coil pack for another one on another cylinder and see if the misfire continues or moves with the coil pack. If it moves with the coil then you know it’s the coil pack and not the cylinder itself
The one you pulled out looked wet. I would have dried it off good and looked to see how any moisture managed to get under it. It may have just needed to be dry and the same issue may pop up again after a while. I have an 04 and last fall it was misfiring on cyl 1 and I did not want to use it in the winter so I just put it on the trickle charger and left it. It was so bad you could barely move when I parked it. This spring it kicked right over and was totally happy for a few weeks until we got a rain and now it is back to it's old tricks again. Could be a bad coil pack but I think these may have an issue with water getting under them and sorting the spark.
This is really helpful, sir, thank you. Question? Do I have to unhook the battery first? Or can I just start when the engine is cold, take the engine cover off, and get to work?
Also, can you name the tools I'll need, so I know what to ask for when I run into Autozone to borrow tools? Does this require upper body strength? If I have a misfire in, say, cylinder 2, is that cylinder 2 when you look at it, or firing order?
Roselynn Finch all you need is a ratchet With a 10mm socket. You don’t have to disconnect the battery, but I would highly recommend it so you don’t cause any damage to the ECU
@@PhillipsVision Thank you! I know it's one of my ignition coils going bad. I had one fail a few weeks ago and got it fixed. Autozone said the others will fail soon, too, so I know that's the issue again. I just don't know how to tell which cylinder it is, because I can feel the symptoms, but my CEL isn't on.
hey bro quick question I use to have a nissan and learned that their electronics are very picky!!! I bought a cheap brand and didnt work I had to get oem from the dealership ! ......now I have a kia ! can I go with autozone brand ? or do I have to put the dealer oem ones ?
A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO MY 2011 RIO STARTED TO IDLE AND MISFIRE. I THOUGHT IT MAY HAVE BEEN DIRTY INJECTORS BUT AFTER A BOTTLE OF CLEANER, SAME. IT CONTINUED UNTIL ONE DAY, I BARELY MADE IT BACK HOME. I CHANGED ALL 4 ORIGINAL PARTS BUT JUST YESTERDAY THE SAME DISASTER. IT WAS ONE COIL, BUT MY CAR "STILL" DOESN'T RUN AS WELL AS IT DID ON DAY ONE??? CAN IT BE THE REPLACEMENT OF THE OTHER 3 COILS??
Jason McDonough if you’re just completing the drive it won’t cause problems, but if you keep driving your computer will shut down the injector if it sees a consistent misfire. I personally would not drive the car until fixed since you are losing engine performance
Have a 2012 kio rio.. Coil is bad on #4. There's a wire blocking me from pulling out the coil. Can't really see how to get it out of the way. Anybody have any experience with that?
KayD Kuykendall the link to purchase it? Amazon has them but the quality is questionable. I’ve had some fail from there. I would recommend Advance Auto or Autozone. They are around $50
LAST YEAR I HAD TO REPLACE ONE IN MY 2011 RIO-5 BUT IT COST $90. CANADIAN. THE NEXT MONTH I THOUGHT I'D SAVE AND REPLACE THE OTHER 3. I ORDERED THEM FROM AMAZON 4/$49.00. BOY WHAT A MISTAKE, IT COST ME ANOTHER $375. TO REPLACE THE PLUG WHICH ALMOST CAUGHT ON FIRE DUE TO THOSE COILS MADE IN CHINA FROM AMAZON!!
Thank you for posting this. I never realized how easy this is. Saves me alot of money!

Same here.ive saved lots of money just by taking time and looking on youtube

I have a 2014 Kia forte Koup with a 2nd cylinder misfire, should I just replace the coil pack or should I also replace the spark plugs?
ii Revelationz you need to test the coil pack before you go replacing things. I released a video about a year ago showing how to test coil packs

Do I unhook the battery. Cables to do this
@@mavisdavis2127 yes, always disconnect battery before dealing with ignition coil packs

No, the coil packs and plugs are not specific to the cylinders
Just the wires, just do one at a time
Does fwd/rwd make a difference on cylinder order? Is that car fwd?
How do you know what location is the fuel injector on Kia Rio?

Yes. It’s best to always disconnect the battery whenever working on any electrical components to avoid damage

After changing the coil the ignition key can't be removed. How do we remove it
I'm trying to find that ignition coil on Amazon but I'm having no luck.

Im sure you've figured out out by now, but all you have to do is disconnect the wire above the bolt for cylinder 4, and then you can easily access it.
