When Americans go outside of our country it is a big deal, but from what I understand it is not all that uncommon for Norwegians to vacation and travel to other countries. The fact that Norway has several neighboring countries within driving distance also makes it much more practical for travel as well. That being said I am curious about what Norwegians consider to be their favorite country to visit in the entire world. Norwegians on average are travelling more than almost any country in the world, now we have the economical means to do so and historically we've always traveled. Even the word Viking is a verb(to go on Viking). Norway has always had close ties to many many countries all over the world 🌎🌍
Kinda interesting to look into, in 2019 Norwegians made almost 10.000.000 flights abroad.
That means in average everyone boarded a plane abroad twice that year. 😅

Norwegians visit the US a lot. Ive been there 4 times myself, but I know people who go there regularly. Many of us still have family there even if the diaspora is getting many generations old.
I've been binging on your channel for 3 days while working now. Really appreciate your interest in us and our country! Also one of the reasons most of us travel so much is because as you know Norway is quite expensive. We earn accordingly to live normal lives here for the most part, but once we travel places that are cheaper it's like we get to pretend to be a bit more wealthy than we are in Norway

I'm Norwegian and have been to almost every country in Europe, almost every country in South America, Canada, USA, Dubai, and Thailand. I don't know anyone who has not been to at least 5-6 countries, and I know a lot of people who have travellled way more than me
Have been to 176 countrys all around the world as a sailor for 17 years on cargo ships and as a turist . Just come back to Norway from 25 years in Indonesia .

Så kult! I'm Norwegian and have been to 12 countries. Would have been even more, if I didn't go to the Netherlands/Denmark 6 times each and Germany 4 times. I have only been in one US state (CA), but that's only temporary, as I loved it there
I'm a norwegian, and I have visited following countries: Iceland, Sweden (many times), Denmark (many times), Estonia, Germany (5 times), France, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece (2 times), Cyprus, Turkey (5 times) and Tunisia.
My kid is just over 2 years old. He have already visited Sweden (of course) Spain, France and Italy.
Most Norwegians will have traveled abroad. Sweden is drivable for most of the east part of Norway, border only slightly over an hour away from Oslo. Denmark is always very popular with lots of ferrys going there, same with Germany. And a lot of Norwegians go to Spain. Then spread across most of Europe since it’s pretty close. USA is also quite popular, but it’s a long flight and more expensive.

Granted we aren't warm, we're actually quite a bit colder in the winter, and we aren't all that cheaper from you, so we are arguably one of the worst places to visit if you wanted a proper escape from norway, but we'd love to have you. 13:50 remember that Norway had the second longest German invasion battle (after Russia) of 2 months and had an ENORMOUS amount of soldiers stationed in Norway. About 300 000 German soldiers were in Norway at any given time, with a population of about 3 million Norwegians at the time, that's 1 soldier for every 10 Norwegians. It stuck in memories, even people who never interacted with their great grandparents who were adults during that time, still remember it.
Growing up in the 70s/80s I still remember grandparents older family members that still harboured animosity toward Germany and Germans.
lol, Most Norwegians have nothing against Germany or Germans and it's a close ally politically and culturally, going back a really long time all the way to the proto Germanic tribes. Most people that had anything to do with WW2 are dead by now and the average German isn't Nazi or anything close to it😆

While I think most people are over that by now it's definitely a significant chunk of people who are not.

@@Luredreier 100% true. and while they might not have anything against Germany or Germans, they might not want to visit the country since, well, some might find it uncomfortable. Especially with the Stolpersteins. They exist in Norway, but it might feel different to see them in Germany too.
Similar situation to Poland. I am not too keen on going there for multiple reasons, but Auschwitz is one of the reasons. Nothing directly against Poland, but it isn´t exactly a country I would go out of my way to visit.

Norway has beautiful nature, our greenery and fjords are gorgeous, but the ocean is cold, and so is our lakes, we dream of sunny weather, beachy scenery, cheap shopping
Dont think you will find many from Norway, that havnt been outside the border, Norwegians love to travel..
Remember, that even if it looks like it's small, Norway can be huge if you want to drive in your car to a different country.
F.ex. To drive from Bergen to Oslo it's a 6-8 hour drive, depending on how far, and how fast you want to drive in a day.
It's around 500 Km or 310 miles.
I'm norwegian and my parents took me a bunch of places when i was a kid. Places I remember traveling to:
- florida, orlando
- greece
- england, london
- sweden
- denmark
- germany
- france
I don't remember the rest but know i have been other places too. I was lucky with my parents savings up for summer holiday every year, either to our cabin, or other countries 😄👌 it was an amazing childhood ❤😄
Cabin in the summer, bbq, swimming, fishing, hiking, even just traveling in your own country is amazing😄👌
I'm a Norwegian..... and I've been to the USA 🇺🇸 Tyler 🥰 I had a GREAT time. I've also been to Turkey, England, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Greece. I hope to go back to the USA many times in the future 🥰

The days most students learn a 3rd language in school. Spanish, French, German, etc. depending on what the school offers...

South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, England, Irland, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. And I'm going to Scotland now in December.

we have mostly gone on vacations within the country. went to sweden once and denmark twice for vacationing. Oh and my mother worked three years abroad, so i also visited her once in Korea. Sweden and Denmark would be like you went to the neighboring state by car.
Ive been to New York, Orlando, Houston, Corpus Christi, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgum, Spain, Germany, Italy, England and Scotland. Dubai is high on the list, but will go to Latvia and Polen hopefully next year.
Dane here, literally dont know anyone who have not been out the country. I just hit my first bucket list number of 25 countries, next goal is 50. For danish people its pretty normal to go at least ones a year on vacation to another country.

Fun fact, if you live in Malmö, Sweden you can drive across Öresundsbron to get to Danmark. It takes a while though.
I know many norwegians like to go too USA, New York, San Francisco, and many more places. My daugheter and her husbond have been in New York and Calefornia, Las Vegas and Texas, they liked it verry much!

In response to your question: most Norwegians have been to another country. I also find it interesting that only 37% of Americans has a valid passport. My favorite city is Rome, it's like traveling to a museum 😀

Im a "middle class" man from Norway in his 40s. I consider myself fond of Norways nature, and I often have vacations in my familys cabin close to the ocean in southeast Norway. I also have family from the mountains a bit north of Bergen, and often visited them in my younger years. I DONT look at myself as a person who travels alot, but have been to a few countries so far anyway. The reason I dont consider myself as a globetrotter, is that I mostly have been in European countries, sometimes as a vacation, other times as a "field" trip with the company I work for. Its easy and fairly cheap for us to travel to other european countries. Outside Europe, I have been in Thailand two times, and one time in Azerbaijan close to Iranian boarder. In Europe i have been to Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Germany, Austria, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Netherlands, England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Italy, France, Slovakia, Lithuania, and Greece. I would love to visit USA, especially Alaska, New York, and Los Angeles. Japan would be cool to experience, and also south America.

:) Campschool as a youth in winter, and I have a friend with a cabin in Etnedal wich have been visited several times.
I was 12 years old, when we stayed one week at the mountains in Valdres during the campschool. Mostly socialicing with kids from another school at the same place, but we also learned alot about skiing in the mountains. (digging shelter, seek after missing persons, how to stay warm, etc)
Cool, Azerbaijan seems like a very interesting place to visit! I am a middle class 26 year old. Outside Europe I've been in California, both Koreas and New Zealand (one year). Inside Europe is different, with Sweden (~20+), Denmark (~6), Germany (4), Spain (2), Greece (2), the Netherlands (6), England (1), Finland (1) and Latvia (1).
@@pheluma2394 Azerbaijan was pretty awesome. Two different worlds in one country. They have a rich state that tries to copy the rest of the world (london taxis, paris kiosks, and Dubai like buildings and hotels, and outside Baku, there is entirely different. I was invited to Iran by another man I met there that wanted me to meet his family, and where also very curious if he could come visit me in Norway as well. Friendly people! A little hard to communicate sometimes (not alot of people know English, but most understand Russian.)

The US is probably one of the countries Norwegians visit the most, but southern Europe and Thailand are probably the main destinations - especially in the winter months. If you want high temperatures in December / January, you have to go to the Equator or outside Africa where you will find the Canary Islands, which most Norwegians visit in winter. This is because it takes 5 hours by plane and not 14-20
I would say I am a pretty average Norwegian when it comes to travelling, and I've visited somewhere between 15 and 20 countries. I am 33 yo.
Norwegian here. In my family my parents are the biggest travellers, they intend to visit all continents and any country they can get to (I think they have been to like 80+ countries by now, and counting) and they love getting around and seeing as much of the history and culture they can manage when they go. They just came back from Peru and every day we got updates and photos sent of everything they were experiencing.
My oldest sister is the closest to them travel wise, she's travelled the furthest out of us kids. Now that she has a family, travel has become more of a compromise, but while she was still single she went pretty far.
My middle sister is the least fond of traveling, she prefers short trips and to not go all that far. She did travel with the family as a kid and will go with her family if they want to go somewhere, so has been around various countries in Europe, but is content to travel inland most of the time.
I'm the habitual traveller, so I tend to go back to the same places over and over again. I've been to many different european countries thanks to my parents, but on my own I have only really gone to UK and Germany for events I like attending.
Cool video, I'm norwegian and it's very common to travel during summer holiday. I have been to 50 countries myself, but that is not the case for most Norwegians.

You should get you ass over to Norway. There is direct flights to Oslo (good prices also with NORSE) from New York, LA and Orlando. Visit in may, june, july. And if you're impressed with norwegians speaking english, i must tell you that most norwegian children also have a third language at school. My daughters, aged 15 and 13, have french, german and spanish to choose from. In additon to english
Norwegians, or the majority of Norwegians, live around the capital Oslo. They have been a few times to Sweden, Spain, maybe Thailand and somewhere else, but they have not seen the most beautiful holiday country, i.e. Norway.
When I was young we used to travel around Europe by rail on a special ticket where you just buy that one ticket and you can use it in the whole of Europe. As a result, I have been in every European country that is a part of that deal, some more than once (such as Poland, I tended to enjoy "eastern" Europe more than other countries).
Also, nobody mentioned it but the country most people travel to yearly, is definitely greece and turkey.

As you Said, the USA is so big. If I should travel to Spain it's a 4-5 hours flight from Oslo Airport.
I was in the USA almost 20 years ago.
Flew to San Francisco via London, spent the weekend there. Then we picked up a rental car and drove to Las Vegas via Bakersfield and Barstow.
3 nights in Vegas, then over the Hoover Dam to Arizona and Phoenix and Meza, walked over the border in to Mexico for a cople of hours, and then to San Diego where we stayed the last week.
I think we drove about 15-1600 miles.
It was a really great trip 😁👍🏻
Rest assured, Norwegians generally like America and Americans, including your music, films, technology, cars and fastfood 😄
I've never been outside Europe, but I've been to more than a dozen countries. Will be going to Sweden in a couple of weeks. Gotta do the mandatory bacon and cheese run before Christmas, of course.
I'm definitely travelling to the USA one day, primarily New York City. Think it would be interesting to see both see whats what in NYC, and how they would treat a Norwegian.
I have visited 17 countries. All in Europe an except Norway where I am born and raised, I have lived in 4 different countries in Europe. I would have liked to visit New Zealand, Thailand and Canada, but somehow never did. Mainly because - when I lived outside Norway, I wanted to visit my family in Norway as often as possibly. But,- wherever I live.....Norway will always be home.
I’ve been to over 30+ countries. 5 times to the US. Traveling all over the world is normal for Norwegians. Its uncommen not to have travelled.

It's fairly common for Norwegians to learn a third language. I believe German and French are the most common, then probably Spanish I guess.
Everyone learn English at school, starting to be exposed to vocabulary very early, then building coherent sentences later.
8 grade is common to choose a third language, but the options depend on the school, usually there are two options, but larger schools might have more. But unless they use that trird language regularly, they tend for forget most of it.
I had German classes, but didn't impress, and today I wouldn't be able to make a conversation, but possibly recognise some basics, and hopefully make somewhat comprehendible responses.
French?
That wasn't even a option in my school.
I'd say German and French myself.
id say spanish is more common like 60 people are learning spanish in 8th grade our school but only 7 of us are learning german

Once again, Tyler tells us that Norway is a small country. Well, Norway is about 1.3 times bigger than the United Kingdom. United Kingdom is approximately 243,610 sq km, while Norway is approximately 323,802 sq km, making Norway 33% larger than United Kingdom. Is the UK small?

My dad loved to travel, so by the time I reached my teens I've had already been all over Norway, visited every Nordic country, been to several countries across Europe, and even Russia. If I've had the chance I might have visited USA back when the conservatives were less rabid, would been fun to meet up with some of the American people I keep in touch with online.

The Norwegian middle class will go on vacation abroad maybe once a year. Maybe some will stay inlands and travel the country.
It is very normal to vacation abroad unless people have economical troubles.
This isnt exactly only a good thing, but that is how it is alot of the time.
I have been to the united states of America twice first time I went there for a day was one of the best days of my life met one of my friends there and the second time I was there for the weekend and someone stole my phone right next to me at greyhound but the experience was one of my best because I met some of the best people i know to this day. apart from that America is one the countries I really want to travel back to but its mostly for the people most of the people I have met from the USA have been awesome people tough kinda and unfamiliar to people outside of Norway they are to my experience just so genuine about it and willing to learn about other people when given the chance and where I ever went I felt very welcome even at the greyhound station the guy who stole my phone was very welcoming. so basically I want to travel BACK
My own experience is that we visited Sweden and Denmark many times in my childhood, and also took vacations in Greece and England. When I got old enough to travel by myself, I added Germany to the list, and when I discovered the Internet in the 90s, I got friends in the USA that I eventually visited. So no, while I may disagree with some politics, that doesn't prevent me from going.
A few years ago I went on a cruise to Antarctica, and spent a few days in Buenos Aires on my way there. Japan is on my wish list, too.
But some friends of mine did go to North Korea. The country is in fact very interested in attracting tourists. Or at least they were, before the pandemic. It's safe enough if you follow the guides. But of course, you'll be completely cut off from the outside world while you are there.

As many already stated, most Norwegians have been outside Norway.
It’s not uncommon that kids and youths travel outside Norway for school trips, marching band trips, soccer tournaments etc.
I’m born in the late 70’s and have played an ice hockey tournament in Czech as a teen, and went for a middle school trip to Denmark. My son is attending folk high school, and they will go to New York for a week in the spring.
I don't think I know anyone who never has traveled outside Norway. I've been to Portugal, Poland, Spain, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and England.

I had to laugh, as you built it up with Norway being so close to the rest of Europe, the very first country named was Cost Rica...a hop and a skip for us Americans. 😂
Travveling to the US isn't hard at all. We don't need a Visa, and you can even get direct flights from Oslo to New York and L.A. With one stop at Heathrow, London, for example, the whole of the US is open to us. And I live like 8 miles from Oslo Airport Gardemoen...
(I haven't been over the pond myself yet, but the most countries in Europe)

Ive only been to indonesia and greece and the nordic countries, but i have been to those places a couple times tho. Liked them alot.
Norwegians travel a lot, maybe because of our many holidays, livable wages and cold winters. Personally I have been to Sweden too many times to count, and Denmark/Netherlands probably 6 times. I've visited Germany four times and I've been to Spain and Greece twice. England once, Finland once, Latvia once, etc.
From Norway you can basically drive to all of Europe, you can ferry to Denmark Germany and the UK, and going east you can go almost anywhere 👍
Btw, apart from quite a few asian, south american and east european people, I've met quite a few american tourists here, many planning to take a cruise either up or down the coast.
Some fly up north to cruise down the coast, while others stop by Oslo, then go to the west to take a cruise up north and either fly or cruise back to an International airport.
Bring all the wallets ;)
I'm Norwegian and didn't really think I had traveled so much compared to many others, but after this video, I was going through in my mind where I've been and it does become a lot after half a lifetime.
Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Polen, Netherlands, France, Cyprus, Israel, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Australia, Switzerland, Austria, Canary Islands(spain) England, USA, Greece. And just at the airport in Singapore. So yeah.. I guess norwegians does travel a bit lol

Another unusual and interesting video. Thanks. I hope you'll have noticed that many of these people's favourites are either closer to the US than to Norway, eg Costa Rica, Peru, and Australia, or just as far from both, as with Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Japan. Europeans just have longer paid vacation time than do US workers, so they travel further, more often, and for longer.
They have traveled because they use their vacation time which is mandatory whereas in America it's not. So they have the freedom to travel where Americans do not also 48% do not have a passport and have never left their state never mind the country.
It is more of a hassle to get into the US than the other countries. There used to be a nice priced ticket to Miami, but that is gone.
If you stretch Norway out (because of the moutains) it would be bigger than most countries. =)

I don’t think you will find anyone who haven’t been outside of Norway. Its extremely rare. Even people who hate travelling have at least been to sweden, Denmark and UK, maybe Germany.

My country count is around 30 I think, and travelling for Norwegians are very common, so I haven’t been to THAT many on a Norwegian scale at all. Been to Europe, Asia and North America (the US), so still lots of places to go.
The comment about Germany was odd, WW2 is way in the past and people don’t hold that against them anymore.
For a Norwegian I haven't traveled a lot, I don't like airports. :) Sweden of course, Denmark, Irland, Spain and Turkey. Think that's about it. :)

Israel, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Turkey, Poland, USA, Dubai (The United Arab Emirates), Syria (Walked the border from Israel so technically i've been there.
That's the BIG difference with USA vs Europe. We got all these different countries, and everyone have different languages, ALL of them. Even if some are similar to each other. Only where it isn't, i guess, is the UK, Monaco, Andorra etc. But on top of that, there is also different dialects in every country too. But every other country have different languages. So there is 40 + different languages, cultures, habits, norms, laws, rules, etc etc etc. Which makes it this big exotic soup of different stuff.
BTW: I would love to go to the USA, but.. I do understand why people are skeptical. Seeing how ''easy'' it is to mess up.. or IF you mess up, you'll definitely know you're not in Norway anymore.. So, i guess ppl just see there is other places you could go instead,... By mess up i mean, get hurt/hospital bills, be drunk, do something stupid/jail, be framed or sued for NO REASON AT ALL... Like saying something wrong/offensive. I think people just watch to many videos and stuff.
Yes, there are some norwegians that haven’t been out of the country. I know one. Personally, I’ve been to 11 different countries, and that is about average, I think.
You should check out a weird Norwegian christmas show called The julekalender. It's half Norwegian and half English. It would be fun to see if you understand what's going on. Even if it's just a song. It's about tre nisser that have to hide from a nåså, find the playdås key and spikk a new propel before Good Old Gammel Nok dies.
