In the 1977 TV show CHiPs, Ponch's 1971 Trans-Am became an iconic symbol of the character's flashy and bold personality. Originally a Pontiac Firebird Formula, the car was modified to include several distinctive features, such as the "screaming chicken" hood decal, which was not part of the original design but added for dramatic effect. The car underwent numerous transformations throughout the series, often being damaged in high-speed chases and stunts, only to be restored in the following episodes, reflecting Ponch's resilient nature. The vehicle was also notable for its deep brown or bronze paint job, which further distinguished it from the standard models. Ponch’s attachment to this car and its frequent appearances in action-packed scenes made it a memorable element of CHiPs and a lasting piece of television history.

Being a Gen Xer and growing up with so many of these shows, I always thought these big V8s put out a lot more horsepower. I am stunned when I hear that the big 455 V8 engine in this early 70's Trans-Am is only putting out a maximum of 330 HP (305 HP according to the spec sheet) with a 0-60 of 5.8 sec. By comparison, I drive a 2023 Acura TLX Type S with a twin-scroll turbo V6 that puts out 355 HP and has a 0-60 of 4.5 seconds. My childhood impression of these old cars is that they were powerful and fast. Yet, my Acura would absolutely smoke most of these old muscle cars. I find that absolutely astonishing.

Thank you for featuring one of my most favorite TV cars! That Firebird from CHiPs sure whetted my enthusiasm for early 2nd generation Firebirds back in the late 70s.....even then it was easy to tell that multiple cars were used throughout the series as there were plenty of inconsistencies , but it certainly was heartbreaking to see them, as well as so many other cool cars wrecked. When you live on the east coast where cars fall victim to the tin worm within a decade of their life, it's hard to understand why they wrecked such nice cars. Also, I never found out till much later, that they used leftover Firebirds from Corvette Summer, but it's easy to tell in the earlier seasons.
I was into building model kits as a kid (still am, in fact) and really wanted a kit of Ponch's Firebird.....you can imagine my disappointment when I found the incorrect Revell T/A that used a 79 instead.....I never bought it! And now those kits are worth a small fortune....go figure. I do remember a 1:32 scale 1971 T/A from Monogram, as well as that fantastic 1:12 scale T/A from Doyusha.
Great to see so many variations of 1970-73 Firebirds and T/As in die casts, I've collected many over the years, and it was Ertl who first released the 1:18 scale die Cast in the mid to late 90s......can't remember if it was the 73 or 70 they did first.....but there actually is a copper 73 T/A so I guess that's as close as we'll get to the Ponchmobile.

The #1 attribute of any TV or movie car is that it be ready to go when the director says "Action!". Also, regarding different wheels, It had the Black "Cragars" (w chrome trim), AND traditional All Chrome Cragars at some point. Not only the "Turbine Type" later on, but during that 2-wheel stunt, it has HUBCAPS! I'll assume it's because they had particular Tires for the stunt (I see they're narrower than his usual tires), with plain rims, so maybe added the "moon type" hubcaps for a chrome/custom look, over steel wheels.🤔

Great video… I was hoping for a nod to the 2017 movie remake car that looked cartoonish.
it was one scene and I doubt it would be worth its own vid.

Yeah, I remember that film, barely; I did go through the 1990 TV movie though, just in case there was anything related to Ponch's original car, but there wasn't, lol

@@CarStarz42 strange part is that I watched those shows but I have no memory of Ponches car. The only reason I knew was that silly remake lol

1:48, you can see the wood ramp used to put the car on the side.

Yeah, they got to the point late in the series in particular, where they just didn't seem to care about that anymore with most being visible at one point or another, lol! 😉
