Unfortunately, you have to treat some mini roundabouts as turns at a normal junction. There’s a couple that I occasionally pass where very few people come out of one of the roads leading to the roundabout. Thus people don’t seem to even recognise the layout as anything other than a through road. I’ve even been beeped for slowing and checking.

Whilst the caravanner isn't entirely blameless you have to take into account the chances that the area is new to him are quite high. Many years ago the protocol for roundabouts was much the same across the country. There seemed to be a standard. Personally I'd say one of the main culprits of being unable to stay within the lines these days is the aging population. The government basically told old people that the buses will give them covid, and a lot of them have returned to driving with dire consequences. Look at the statistics and you will find that there is a real issue is with young people aged 18 to 25 who think they are good drivers. We only need to look at recent events where cars full of young people have been killed by idiotic driving for proof. Many people who have come to the UK drive on foreign licences and clearly haven't got a clue about the rules on our roads. Thanks, Ashley for all your content. I do learn from it.
However, I am struggling with mini roundabouts: there appears to be 3 schools of thought - 1) follow the highway code, 2) driving straight has priority, 3) if turning right try and put off the drivers going straight on by cutting across the painted part. I do subscribe to school 1 but question whether mini roundabouts are a good thing. Why did the councils wholeheartedly embrace the practice of sticking mini roundabouts everywhere? Is there ‘science’ that says they reduce accidents; increase traffic flow; why? One would think Councils would know their people! A lot of these mini roundabouts have been put in T-junctions where an obvious ‘main’ road has been interrupted and a side road given equal status - but it never works to equalise traffic flow, just gives a conflict point for the subscribers to 2) and 3) and gives the rest of us the heebie-jeebies. Do you know of any serious research on this topic?

So much going on in these clips, it's difficult to know where to begin. It's so important to learn to spot the person who's going to do something stupid a long time before the notion passes through their mind - though the make of vehicle can be an indicator. Clios have joined the Honda Jazz as the car of choice for that particular category of cluelessness.
Mobile phones, Pot Noodles and delivery lists seem to be the weapon of choice for distracting van drivers, as well as that awful habit of interlocking hands on the top of the steering wheel.
I totally agree with the comment @ 7:22 that people's ability to stay between lines is diminishing. It is for this reason that I am very reluctant to follow the advice that you approach left hand bends on the outside of your lane. Time and again I've met people coming the other way who have no concept of 'their side of the road', whether they be a 19-year-old in a 'customised' Polo (ie. seat lowered so he can't see over the dash) or Good Ol' Vern or Vicky in their Volvo.

For the IAM, cornering priorities are:
      1 Safety
      2. Visibility
      3. Stability
      in that order!
So by all means drive to improve visibility and stability (where it is safe, seek to be on the offside of your lane coming up to a left hand bend) but the safety aspect takes priority. Coming up to an acute blind left hand bend, it's safer to be a little bit slower and stay towards the centre or nearside of your lane. All too often, somebody from the other direction cuts the corner and ends up over the line!

It was classed as an advanced technique and not to be covered on a CBT or DAS course. You can see the body language of the rider in the clip, he is using his upper body to get the bike to lean. A little pressure on his left handlebar would have got the correct line. This is still an issue 20 years after a stopped being an instructor. Last year I overheard a 125 rider rueing the fact she couldn't get the bike around faster corners, so I asked if she'd been taught counter-steering. Alas she had not. I spent ten minutes going over how it worked, why you should use it and how to safely practice it. clip 17 - following that overtake up by immediately looking to overtake at least 2 more vehicles straight after it :O
I get that the dashcam might distort the view/speeds involved a little, but surely if you have a close call like that its better to start being extra cautious until you can get it out of your mind (there might be extra adrenaline coursing through you after something like that, so just slow down a little?)

3:50 Maybe the amount of rain and wet on the road made the mini roundabout (& its markings) less visible and obvious & general visibility *but all the more reason to drive carefully* . 10:20 That was a *very big* Peugeot e-bicycle!

The motorcycle instructor has the disadvantage of not being able to directly intervene but would have told the student to be easy on the power and I would think other than repeatedly repeating the advice with a rising level of urgency, there is little more could be done. However credit to the inexperienced rider they recovered well and that will be a good lesson about tyre adhesion degredation in wet weather.

In the first clip, I think the caravan obscured the cammers view of the closed lane on the roundabout exit as they entered and went round, he stayed in a staggered position to the caravan but then sped up for the exit and/or the caravanner was slowing to merge, however they were still going round which could have caused the caravanner not to see the cammer, therefore thinking it was clear to merge, I would almost say it was bad timing but it would have probably been fine if they had stayed in a staggered formation to each other

Clip 3: Although the viewer really did make it happen, but to be honest, the land rover driver baited him a bit by slowing down indicating that he was going to give way, but eventually didn't.
Clip 11: I would not drive in the middle lane at all if I see an exit queue. I'd immediately switch to the right most lane; as far away as possible. Same for busy entry lanes. I'd always switch lanes if possible rather than to be in a position where there is a higher probability of something "unexpected" happening.

23: godwful junction design. The Dutch (and since recently Cambridge) know how to do cycle lanes round roundabouts. The UK, in general, does not (I hope the new design manual the local transport note 20/1 will be applied retroactively to junctions like this).
Well done to person on bike for spotting and being able to deal with it, and not being too furious with it.
Still terrible driving from the person in the red car. "Must get past the bike" needs to stop. How upset would the driver have been if the bike rider had taken the general purpose lane to go ahead? It's behaviour like that the primary position, and not being obliged to use cycle lanes, exists to prevent.

    • @nickbooker5579

      Further to 23:
      (1) I was being a bit harsh here especially to the engineers at the coal face designing the thing, sorry, I tend to get a bit cross when I see things like that and my vision zero/systematic safety envy kicks in (though it looks like, at least in Warwickshire, that might be coming soon).
The engineers of the roundabout in this clip were likely designing to now-outdated guidelines and terrible budgets.
However it does seem evident with a lot of cycle infra installed in the UK while I've been walking this Earth is designed by people who don't cycle.
      (2) Correction the new manual is the LTN1/20 not 20/1, my bad.

    • @Umski

I go round that one in Cambridge occasionally as a car driver - it is lethal unless you are fully aware that you need to look out for cyclists as the blind spots are huge as you approach - many drivers are looking at the point where they need to stop to give way to cars, NOT the cycle lane that's a few yards before that and if a cyclist comes round too quickly then it's a lose-lose situation - it's 20mph zone too but many drivers couldn't give two hoots about that. Until driver education improves around cyclists and respecting that they are road users this roundabout will be a one-off I imagine or someone will die and they will change it back :(

    • @thromboid
      @thromboid 2 роки тому

It doesn't seem ideal to have the slower and less visible road users approach the roundabout on the left but have priority (IIUC for the UK). I would have thought, for a single-lane roundabout at least, that having all traffic approach and enter the roundabout in single file would be safer (provided the cyclists can safely merge beforehand) - after all, all traffic should be slowing for the roundabout anyway.

    • @nickbooker5579
      @nickbooker5579 2 роки тому +1

@@thromboid yes in this case I think no lane at all is better than what it currently has. The lane would make me feel compelled on pain of assault or violence to ride in the most vulnerable position. I've pointed out a road in my area which has similar issues and the response from the council has been encouraging - it was built to old standards and they're reviewing that corridor already for improvement.
If the cammer is reading this: you might want to engage with your local highway authority (or cycle advocacy group if you have one) to let them know this incident happened, and give them an idea of frequency if it happens regularly. If they don't know they can't do anything about it. Also look out for LCWIP and Active Travel Plan consultations happening in the area.
If you're in Warwickshire, also consider taking part in the Warwickshire road safety partnership's consultation on its road safety strategy to 2030 (it's on my to-do list). It includes vision zero and systematic safety ("safe systems" is the way they're phrasing it) and if that's planned and implemented well it will really help with safety of VRUs and drivers alike. If you like what you see please voice your support because supporters of change tend to stay too quiet and get drowned out by the vocal opponents.
If you're not in Warwickshire your local authority may have something similar in the pipeline too.

    • @nickbooker5579
      @nickbooker5579 2 роки тому +2

Oh if you talk to your council please be more constructive and civil than my original comment on this was, and don't quote anything I said that you don't personally agree with. I've already apologised for the tone of my original post. They're not ogres and they're not stupid, but they will probably welcome constructive criticism. They may just be unaware of the issue and may have been working under certain constraints and to old standards when the junction was put in.

I usually just begin to slowly move out when this happens to get it flowing again but is there actually any rule thats meant to be followed for that because people seem baffled by it?

I'd be interested in the answer to this. I've always assumed whomever was there first, if that's you then proceed with care. I usually let the person to my right go and let them worry about the person to my left. Sometimes I even hold my hand out to stop the person to my right setting off and go first lol, if I don't, we'd be there all day.

There’s no priority there. It’s a stalemate. Your best bet is to think fast and proceed with caution. Be prepared to stop if someone makes a move and absolutely don’t rely on priority to stop a collision. You could also check indicators, positioning etc to see if someone is giving you priority by not crossing your path and proceed from there.

I think it's possible that it was low visibility where the sun made it difficult/blinded the van driver and thus didn't catch the oncoming car.
Especially if it was a car with colors easily disguised by the sunshine
But that doesn't excuse the vandriver.
Other factors could be distractions as a mobile phone or adjusting the radio etc.
But I suspect by the time of day and hoe the sun is positioned its the sunshine blinding him/her.

Adding to clip 23 (Cyclistist being nearly left-hooked by a car)...
I cycle daily to get around - and more and more I see car drivers being slefish, aggressive and down right dangerous - all becuase they want to get where they want a few seconds sooner.
The amount of times I have cars close overtake right before a set of red-lights to squeeze into the spot ahead of me for their car to fit in - meaning I have to brake suddently usually.
There needs to be, I feel, more education out there for the road users to recognise other road users and how they use the road to keep themselves (i.e. cyclists) safe - such as taking primary position so that they are seen more - which usually means a dangerous overtake which I mentioned earlier
    😰
Worst being a bus overtaking on a corner inches from my handle bars - and when I sent email to the bus company they were unable to download ANY footage from the many CCTV cameras which are on all West Midlands buses

09:07 Sometimes you actually look before you decide to do a save, even if it is fast.
At one point I looked in the mirror, saw that it was not clear and then had to crash into the car changing lane in front of the bus. It was low speed.
At another point it was clear so I could swerve. That was on the motorway as a taxi decided he did not want to go down into the tunnel so he dove over chevrons and stuff in front of my bus going 60 km/h.
So maybe if there had been a pedestrian the bus would not have done that save?

The caravanner spotted this and had his left indicator on for the entirety of that clip. It was the fool filming it who made a conscious decision to try and accelerate to block off the caravan and is so furiously hard of thinking that they sent this to Ashley in the genuine belief that they were the victim!

I find with a lot of mini roundabouts there's a "main" route over and one or two lesser directions and if you're approaching from one of those then you shouldn't expect to be granted right of way. It's not technically correct (the best kind of correct), but it's the reality of the situation and driving to accommodate reality is better for your physical and mental health.
